The Story of Eve and Adam, a Fable

The first human that God created was spherical, with four arms and four
legs, and two faces, facing either way. Male and female created He them.
And He saw that they were good. They were one completely perfect being.
Having all living perfection within them they wanted for nothing and
understood everything.
The first human lived in contemplative bliss for an unknown period. But
then they realised that there was one thing they did not understand.
Being perfect, they did not understand imperfection. They did not
understand lack, and hence did not understand want or desire. So, in
order to complete their understanding of all things, God split them in
half, down the middle. What had been one was now two, man and woman,
Adam and Lilith.
Turning round, they saw each other for the first time. Adam saw a
creature very much like himself, lean and powerful of limb, quick and
alert, perhaps a little slighter of build, smoother of skin, with slight
bulges on her chest, and of course a cleft between her legs, where he had
a protuberance. Lilith, in turn, saw someone much like herself, just a
little bigger, a littler stronger, with a protuberance where she had a
cleft.
"You are the missing half of me," said Adam.
"And you are the missing half of me," said Lilith.
Each feeling a lack, they desired each other, desired to complete each
other and be one again. Adam reached out to Lilith and Lilith reached
out to Adam, hand to hand, clasping. They pulled each other together and
held each other tight, as if wanting to merge back together again. They
lay down together. On the ground Adam tried to roll on top of Lilith, to
mount her. He felt that he wanted to take control of her so that he
would be master of all, and hence complete in himself. But Lilith
resisted. She would not let Adam get on top of her. She tried to roll
over onto him. She wanted to take him into herself so she would be
master and be complete in herself. So they wrestled for supremacy and
love turned into war. Being closely matched neither gained the upper
hand. Adam was slightly stronger, but Lilith was slightly more supple.
So the battle continued.
"You know, this isn't going to work," said Lilith eventually.
"So what should we do?" said Adam.
"I don't know about you," said Lilith, "but I'm out of here."
So she left. What became of her no-one really knows, but the stories of
mankind remember her with fear, as a temptress, a succubus, a demoness.
Then Adam was lonely. Without his mate he felt like half a man. With
nothing to do but contemplate his loss he felt bored and restless. So
God gave him a garden to work in, to take his mind off things. Then God
created all sorts of creatures for Adam to share the garden with. And
they were all very interesting and quite friendly and helpful, but none
of them could replace Adam?s missing half. So one night, when Adam was
asleep, God took a rib out of him and used it to create a new human, who
would be part of Adam, bone of his bone, flesh of his flesh, but would
not compete with him. She would be called Eve.
When Adam woke up and saw Eve for the first time he was amazed. Unlike
Lilith, Eve looked, in many ways, quite unlike Adam. She seemed much
smaller than he, weak and frail, but somehow also heavy and fleshy. She
had a tide of black hair flowing down her back; heavy, round breasts;
broad, fleshy hips; a gently rounded belly and a round, soft face. Eve
turned her head to one side and looked coyly at Adam through heavy, half-
closed eyelids, at once shy and inviting. Adam felt an immediate stab of
lust for Eve, took her firmly in his arms and pressed his lips to hers.
They lay down together. Eve lay submissively on her back and spread her
legs and Adam climbed on top and mounted her and he was very pleased with
her.
Adam and Eve lived happily together in the garden, as man and wife. But
after a while Adam began to feel somewhat dissatisfied. Eve was very
beautiful. She cooked nice meals for him, mainly out of beans and
lentils (for they were vegetarians in those days). And she lay down with
him very enthusiastically whenever he felt like it. But Adam didn't
think he really understood her. When she told him how handsome and
strong he was or complimented him on his work in the garden he didn't
know if she really meant it or if she was just being nice. He felt that
there must be something about Eve, as a woman, that he, as a man, could
not understand. As a result he felt that he was missing something.
Eve too was dissatisfied. She thought Adam was very handsome. And he
was always bringing her things from the garden like fruit, or honey, or
pretty flowers. And he was a considerate and appreciative lover. But
she didn't think she really understood him. She wasn't sure if he really
loved her. And then there was the ex, who he never talked about. Eve
couldn't help wondering about her. She felt that there must be something
about Adam, as a man, that she, as a woman, just could not understand.
Now, God had told Adam and Eve that of every tree in the garden they
could eat freely, except the tree in the middle of the garden, which was
the tree of knowledge of good and evil and of male and female. God had
forbidden them to eat of that tree because He thought that Adam, in his
diminished state, could not really handle that kind of knowledge. But
the serpent, which was the most subtle of the beasts of the field,
disagreed. One day he said to Eve, "Didn't God tell you that you could
eat of every tree in the garden?"
"Oh yes!" said Eve. "God lets us eat of any tree we want, except the
tree of knowledge; for he told us that on the day that we eat of that
tree we shall surely die."
The serpent scoffed. "No way! When you eat of that tree you will not
surely die, but your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods. Your
husband was half a god once, you know, and could be again. And so could
you."
Then Eve looked at the fruit of the tree of knowledge and saw that it was
plump and ripe and good to eat. So she took the fruit and ate of it.
And she gave it to Adam and he ate also.
And when Adam ate of the fruit his eyes were opened and he understand all
things. In particular he understood Eve. And she understood him. And
their two minds merged together into a perfect unity, as it had been in
the beginning. They closed their eyes and opened their minds and
communed together in perfect harmony. But this transcendent unity lasted
only a moment, only as long as the fruit lingered on their tongues. Then
the one separated back into two again and the experience was lost.
When Adam opened his eyes he saw something incredible. A huge man stood
opposite, towering over him, heavily muscled, very hairy. Having never
had access to mirrors or large bodies of water, he did not recognise this
man as himself seen from a different angle. Not until he looked down and
saw his own heavy breasts, smooth thighs and long hair did he realise,
with horror what had happened. Eve too, was stunned by the change. But
she also felt strangely excited. She advanced towards Adam. When Adam
saw Eve?s penis start to swell a strange fascination came over him and he
knew what he had to do. He lay down on his back and spread his legs.
Then Eve climbed on top of him and mounted him. Eve felt clumsy and
awkward to start off with, but then felt a great thrill when she
climaxed. Adam felt somewhat uncomfortable, having Eve lie on him, but
he was pleased that she seemed to enjoy it so much. But afterwards he
felt ashamed about what had been done to him, by his own body no less,
and he desired to hide his nakedness. And Eve felt guilty about what she
had done, to her own body no less, and she too desired to hide her
nakedness. So they sewed fig leafs together and made aprons from them.
Then they heard God walking in the cool of the day and they hid from Him
amongst the trees. God called out to Adam, "Where are you?"
And Adam revealed himself and said, "We heard you coming and we hid
because we were ashamed."
When God saw that they had covered themselves up he said, "What have you
done? Have you eaten of the tree whereof I commanded you not to eat?"
Adam and Eve hung their heads in shame and guilt.
"Then," said God to the woman, "you must be Adam." The woman nodded.
"And you," he said to the man, "must be Eve." The man nodded. "Because
you have done this," he said to Adam, "I will greatly multiply your
sorrow. In sorrow you will bring forth children. Your desire will be to
your husband, and he shall rule over you." To Eve he said, "For your
sake the ground is cursed. In sorrow you will eat of it all the days of
your life."
And then God sent Eve and Adam forth from the garden. And to the East of
the garden he set cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every way, to
guard the way to the garden.
And for ever after the new Eve remembered she had been a man and desired
to get back to that state again. And the new Adam always remembered he
had been a woman and he felt a longing to be female once more.
