Hi there, and welcome to, well, my story. As you can probably tell by
that little bit above, I'm dead. Oh, yes. I'm as dead as a very dead
thing- dead as a dodo, dead as a dinosaur, dead as a...well, you get the
idea. Anyway, I guess I'd better give you the details you've been waiting
for, right?
Okay, well...when I was alive, my name was Nicholas 'Nick' Nocturne.
Yeah, makes me sound like some detective from an old film, right? Anyway,
I'd just had my twenty-fifth birthday, and my girlfriend had given me the
best birthday present I'd ever had- but you don't need to know what it
was. I was a radio DJ for the local radio station, every weekday
afternoon for half an hour. It didn't pay incredibly well, but I enjoyed
it-and damn it, I was good at it, too! I lived in a quiet little town on
the suburbs of a pretty big city. I won't tell you where- you don't need
to know, and it's not important. Point is,. I had a good life, I was
happy, and everything was as good as good could be.
Well, as good as good could be right up until it ended. I remember it
like it was yesterday- in fact, for all I know, it was yesterday. It was
a Tuesday afternoon, and the day of our fifth anniversary. It had been
raining in the morning, and it was still a little hazy outside- not
enough to be dangerous, but just enough to be annoying. Anyway, I was
desperate to get home- she was waiting for me there, and we had an
evening of making love ahead of us. Anyway, because of this, I may or may
not have been driving a little too fast, and not paying enough attention
to the road. In fact, I definitely wasn't paying attention to the road-
and as I rounded the corner, the car went crashing into the back of a
truck that was parked there. When the ambulance and police came- and the
driver of the truck looked- the front of the car was completely
flattened- on a good note, I'd been killed instantly, so I felt no pain.
The next thing I knew, I was in a black place- I couldn't see, couldn't
feel, couldn't even hear, but somehow, I was aware of a voice talking to
me: 'Nicholas Nocturne , you are not due here. A grave mistake has been
made, and we will return you to your world. However, due to the injuries
inflicted on your mortal body, we have been unable to return you to that
body, or that life. We have, however, found an acceptable replacement for
you- the owner of the body has passed away in their sleep. You will be
inserted into their body, provided with memories of your own life, and of
theirs- but only as needed, when needed. Good luck with your new life.
Sorry for the inconvenience'. Then, before I could even try to reply,
there was a flash, and I was pulled out of this place.
I was woken by a beep, and opened my eyes with a sigh to hear, from the
radio:

And that was for our good friend, and yours, the host of Moonlight
Moments , Nick Nocturne, who was tragically killed in an accident a week
ago. Our hearts go out to his fianc?e, and for all those who want to show
up, his funeral is on Friday, two o'clock, at Elm Ridge.'
My blood ran cold at the sound of the DJ- Bob, I think it was- talking
about me. Well, who I used to be anyway. As I sat up to listen to the
radio, I became aware of a strange feeling in my body- I felt empty where
I shouldn't have, and there was weight where there hadn't been before. As
I turned my head, I became aware there was a sheet of coppery-red hair
hanging there. Well, this was unusual. I sighed as the DJ went on,
listening carefully:
'And now, a special song for a special lady- as you know, Caroline
Jacobs, our favourite early-morning presenter, has had to leave, due to
health circumstances. Jolene, sweetheart, this one's for you-

I've been inclined to believe it never would
Caroline Jacobs. The name seemed familiar to me- and it wasn't that I
didn't like the song, but I couldn't stand to listen to the song any
more. I reached out to turn it off, and noted as I did so that my hand
was now thinner, slimmer- wait this was...no, it couldn't be, but it
was...a woman's hand!
I let out a scream that sounded far too high and girly, and promptly
fainted. When I came to, I tentatively crept from the bed, moving to
stand in front of a mirror placed beside a desk, on which sat a purse. I
moved to open it, and rifled through, finding what looked like a woman's
wallet inside. As I did so, I looked up at myself in the mirror and
gasped. I was...God, help me...I was beautiful! I had long red hair,
bright green eyes, kissable-looking lips, and freckles splashed across my
cheek. Running my eyes over the rest of my body, I noted I was slim, and
curvy- not overly so, but just enough so that I looked like a woman, and
not like some preteen girl. I wasn't sure how old I was from looking at
myself- I could have been anywhere between eighteen and thirty. Just as I
was considering this, I came across a driving licence, and what I found
made me very nearly pass out again. There, written in the neat writing
found on official cards, was the name 'Jacobs, Caroline' printed across
the top. But what really caught my eye was the date of birth- it was
exactly the same as mine.
It was all too much for me, and I fainted again. When I came to again, I
found myself reaching for the phone, dialling a number I'd dialled so
many times before. The number of my- well, Nick's- girlfriend. If
anyone could tell me what to do, it would be her. I just hoped she
wouldn't think I was too crazy.
