good mood today. Maybe I should get you to help me with my fitting next
time, Mother suggested. This was getting a little bit embarrassing.
Mother and I have been having this conversation on and off now for the
past three months. Mother caught me looking at one of her bras as I was
removing it from the washing machine. I suggested that she should
consider hand washing it as the washing machine would stretch out the
material.
Mother had a field day with that comment, let me tell you. Oh, the
washing machine stretches out my bras, does it, she asked me. And how did
I know that? she requested of me. I'd seen it on television, I told her.
Women's lingerie should be hand washed. Oh, now I'm a women's lingerie
expert, she started to poke fun. And you learned all this by watching the
television. What kind of television shows was I watching where I'd learn
about hand washing women's lingerie?
She asked a good question and I wasn't sure how to respond. Well, I,
well, I, ... I don't remember, I said, but it's just common knowledge that
a women's lingerie should be hand washed. The washing machine stretches
out the delicate materials.
Well, she said, if I had time to hand wash my unmentionables, we wouldn't
be having this conversation, now would we? She asked me. This is how I
got myself into this problem in the first place. Mother suggested I hand
wash some of my things so I could see how long it would take to wash
clothes by hand. It was as if she was directly challenging me and I took
the bait.
Mother had me hand wash some of my things like socks and slacks. And she
was right, it did take some time and the things I washed by hand needed a
lot of ironing instead of just throwing things into the dryer. So I
learned one lesson real quick. Once again though, I put my foot into my
big mouth. But Mother, I said, women's clothing is of a softer material
and requires a different method of washing. Didn't she read the labels?
That's where I made my biggest mistake. And why am I reading the laundry
labels on women's clothing? Mother asked me. Okay, she had me there. I
had read the label on some of the clothing Mother had stuck in the
laundry basket. Hand Wash Only, Line Dry. And Mother was washing her
delicates in the washing machine and drying them in the dryer, on high
temperature. She was going to destroy her undies that way. They'd stretch
out or the spaghetti straps would be ripped off or something like that.
Mother gave me a hug and told me she was happy she had a son who was so
concerned about her panties stretching in the laundry or her delicate
cami or bra straps being damaged by the hot dryer. She then volunteered
me to hand wash all the delicate materials in the home from now on. We
wouldn't want our fine lingerie being damaged by that big hot dryer, now
would we, James?
So that's how I started hand washing Mother's lingerie in the first
place. Mother laughed at me when I was doing it, but wouldn't let me get
out of the being the lingerie expert in the house. Mother asked me for
one of her bras when Tammie was visiting to work on some homework. Tammie
asked me why Mother was asking me about her underwear and I had to
explain that I had opened my big mouth and now had to hand wash Mother's
lingerie. I could see Tammie felt bad for me.
But then Tammie said something in front of Mother about my not
understanding how uncomfortable bras really were and I said that she must
have the wrong size bra on if it were that uncomfortable. Tammie said
something about walking a mile in her shoes and Mother responded by
suggesting I spend a day in one of Tammie's bras instead. I said it would
be easy if the bra were properly fitted in the first place.
Well, the challenge was out there, wasn't it? Mother, Tammie, and I went
to the Victoria's Secret store in the local mall and Mother dragged me
into the store. She had no problem explaining to the sales girl our
little challenge and Mother asked that I be properly fitted. Tammie just
stood there smiling. The sales girl was a little embarrassed about
fitting a boy for a bra but informed me that she would make sure I was
properly fitted. This took about 5 minutes in the dressing room. Tammie
asked if I'd had fun in there.
Mother didn't just buy me one, oh no. She said I should experience bra
wearing for a week to see how I liked wearing one all day. Tammie said
this was not a fair bet. I needed to wear a bra for more than just 8
hours each day. Mother said maybe I should get some of those 18 hour bras
that women wear. Tammie suggested to Mother that I wear a bra 24 / 7 so I
could get the full affect and see how it felt to get home and out of that
contraption after a long day. Mother agreed.
So that's how it was decided I'd be spending all day, every day for a
whole week wearing a bra to see what a woman goes through. And it just
wasn't one kind of bra either. Tammie said I should have to wear training
bras, sports bras, underwire and padded kinds, long line, tee shirt,
strapless, special occasion, the works. Tammie also suggested some of the
more uncomfortable style panties, like girdles and pantyhose to
experience the whole gamut of women's discomfort while wearing lingerie
that improves their appearance.
Okay, this turned out a whole lot different than what I was expecting. If
I'd just kept my mouth shut and let Mother wash her clothes any way she
wanted to, I wouldn't have to be hand washing both mine and my mother's
lingerie at the end of each day. Mother was joking about my rushing home
to put on a bra, when she knew I was wearing one just about every minute
of each day. I didn't have to wear a bra in the shower, but other than
that, Mother made sure there was a bra and panties waiting for me on my
bed each day.
