Part 2
I was so nervous on that first day with my official title as the
Receptionist. I got there early and recalled the agency greeting, which I
had practiced over and over while I had made pretend phone calls and
transfers. Ms. Jennifer told me to say, "Hello this is The Women's Place,
my name is John, may I help you?"
Things were going well that morning, though I did notice a few people
hung up on me. At first I thought these might be wrong numbers, but it
happened again a couple of times after lunch. I didn't really know what
was going on I transferred a call from Stephanie in to Ms. Jennifer,
who'd recently gotten back from a meeting.
It was then that Ms. Jennifer called me in to her office for a few
moments, and she had a look on her face that made me feel like I was in
trouble. She said, "John, we've got a problem and I need your help to fix
it." I explained to her nervously that I would help however I could.
"Some of our women clients are complaining that they're getting a man on
the line when they call us. This makes some of them anxious because they
are calling and asking for other women to help them. Some of them have
been raped by men and are scared of men. I'm worried that you might not
be able to work here after all. I'm sorry but we may need to let you go
if something can't be changed."
Suddenly I felt terrible with my stomach all tied up in knots. I knew
that if a man did something terrible to me that I wouldn't want to call a
man for help unless it was the police or a fireman. I felt stupid for not
thinking about how my voice might scare women. Suddenly I felt inadequate
and just wanted to run away and cry.
I had to do say something, so I blurted out, "Ms. Jennifer, er ma'am, I
am SO SORRY that I am alienating your clients! That's the LAST thing I
want to do. Please help me think of a way I can still work here and be a
part of this team. I really DO want to help you help these poor women!"
After saying this I grabbed some tissues and tried not to shake
uncontrollably.
Ms. Jennifer must have seen how hurt I was, because suddenly she was
looking at me with pity. What she said surprised me. "Well John I can see
how upset you are about all of this. I can also see that your behavior
is, um, well, not very manly. Just look at you, crying like a girl over
some hung up phone calls. You are more emotional than I am! You certainly
care more about our clients than Emily, our last flaky receptionist. You
are one hot mess."
After a long pause, she continued. "Do you remember how you agreed to do
whatever it takes to work here at The Women's Place?"
I replied that I did recall that, though I wasn't sure what that all
meant. Ma'am added, "Frankly, the first step in keeping your job is
finding you a new name and changing that voice of yours, a deep masculine
voice that doesn't match your mannerisms at all. To work here you are
going to have to be someone different. You are going to have to be a
woman, at least on the phones and at least while you work here for me.
Can you do that, John?"
When Jennifer said this to me, my heart sank and I nearly fainted. It was
as if the best thing that was starting to happen for me was going to be
taken away. My hopes of being on this team, of helping women and maybe
finding some friends, everything seemed to be at risk.
I knew that she wanted an answer right now, and I also knew that I felt
broken and exhausted, totally vulnerable and at risk myself for some kind
of meltdown. I was holding on to this job for dear life and simply could
not lose it. I must have lost track of time when Jennifer startled me by
saying,
"I need a decision now, right now. What are you going to do John? Give me
your new name OR turn in your ID, gather your things and walk away. I've
got no time to waste if I need to bring in a new girl. Are you ready to
be a girl at work? Are you one of us, or are you just a quivering wimpy
excuse for a man? You don't seem much like a man to me right now."
For most men, being called a sissy would be hurtful. And she was being
kind of mean to me. But her words rang true to me because my whole life
seemed to be a constant barrage of teasing and name calling. As a man
there was little doubt that I was effeminate and a sissy. No one had ever
accepted me as a man, and while my mom tried to help me as best she
could, she knew nothing about turning a boy into a masculine male. Out of
insecurity I fled situations where "boys would be boys" and instead
turned to the company of women where I felt safe. Now a strong woman was
offering to help me stay in a safe place, and offering me a chance to
live out the feminine life in a more expansive way. Perhaps being a woman
at work would help me really figure out who I was for the first time?
Again all of this was going through my head and I lost track of time. I
realized where I was and turned to Ms. Jennifer, who was glaring at me
and losing her patience. Before she could yell me at again I softly
whispered, "call me Bethany, Beth for short. Yes, that will be my name."
At that moment I felt something die within me. As if I was succumbing and
being released into a new world of possibilities. I looked up at Ms.
Jennifer, hoping for a word of encouragement.
Suddenly this strong woman had a tear in her eye, and she came over and
hugged me deeply while I tried to hold back the tears. "nice to meet you
Bethany, welcome to The Women's Place! We are so glad to have you, Beth."
I felt so at home and so accepted!
