Chapter 1
Breathing in the stale and unused air of the empty Chicago apartment a
man opened a window before falling hard into overstuffed couch next to
it. His heart was still trying to slow itself down from all the
excitement; he had escaped, he had finally escaped. After months and
months of planning everything fell into place and he ran like a bat out
of hell and didn't look back.
Jacob lied on the couch, eyes closed, and breathed a sigh of relief he
had been wanting to breath since the beginning of the year. He was out
and safe, no one could track him down, he was too thorough, too smart.
The company would only know that a sizable amount of money was missing
along with one of their valued employees. After putting two and two
together he was sure they would start looking for him and he was right.
He stuck around long enough to hear angry yelling before bolting for the
fire escape, briefcase in hand.
Money wasn't the only thing he took though, and he had planned for that,
too. Months ago he stole an orb from his boss's private collection,
replaced it, and started to rent out a dingy little apartment across the
city, it was the beginning of the end for him. The orb, as far as he
knew, had mythical, magical properties that could turn its owner into
the opposite gender, and back again. It was stolen from an ancient
people that used it to convert males to females to help keep their
population alive. Needless to say that without the orb the people died
off in just a few generations.
Jacob's boss had it, for whatever reason, and Jacob new he could use it
to help get out of the life he was starting to regret.
The company that Jacob worked for was private, they dealt mostly with
information, stealing things and influencing certain people. In the
middle of the year before, about six months before Jacob decided to
leave, the company started to do more dirty work. Instead of keeping up
their policy of 'no one gets hurt' they started to hurt people. Or,
rather, the information and things he was stealing was starting to hurt
people, sometimes costing them their lives and he couldn't take it.
He thought he could, he really did and he really tried but it was just
too much. His morals were getting in the way. Sure he was a thief but no
one ever got hurt while he was on the job. Pride, sometimes, got hurt
but other than that he knew no one had died because he took something or
told someone valuable information.
He started to plan his exit strategy after the fifth person went
missing, he new they wouldn't just let him walk away, he knew too much
about too many things, things that could crush the company and send
everyone he knew to jail or worse, he could disappear and it wouldn't be
on his terms.
Jail wasn't his goal, though, he didn't want to make that many enemies
because he knew they had friends in even higher places than his boss and
jail time would only piss him off more. The only reason he was confident
in leaving the way he did was because he had the orb and no one else
knew that he did.
So he needed a way out other than turning in everyone he knew. Luck had
it his boss liked rare and odd things, that's where the orb came in. He
took it well in advance, along with setting up the apartment, so it
would be harder, if not impossible, to track him down after he took the
money.
He left everything behind after emptying his own bank account, didn't
take anything from his apartment just to be safe and to be even safer he
didn't store anything, too. Mostly he wanted it to look like he
disappeared into thin air.
And as far as he was concerned he did.
Now he had an apartment, rented out under a lady's name, Rita, if he
remembered correctly, so he could hide there. The plan was simple: use
the orb, take on a new identity for a year or so and when he faded from
everyone's memory then he would move away, probably overseas. While in
his new identity he needed work, though, he needed to save a little more
money so he could move away and be rid of the godforsaken city he had
called home. The money he had stolen was to pay the rent for the
apartment and to get food. He was already paid up for six months in his
new home by the time he got there so he didn't have to worry about that
too much. The landlord, Rohan, was only too happy to accept rent in
advance and left the apartment alone.
"The hard part," he said to himself, "is deciding when to change."
Jacob had only arrived at the apartment an hour earlier, early in the
morning before anyone was awake. He had started running after midnight
and zigzagged his way around the city until he ended up in the sewer
tunnel that led to the alley behind the apartment that was just below
his standards. He was sure no one had followed him that far and even if
they did once he changed no one would know who he was.
"Now is as good as time as any, I suppose," he said to the empty air and
sat up. The briefcase that held the money and the orb was on the floor,
where he let it drop, by the door. He almost threw the damn thing as he
tried to quickly yet quietly shut the door behind him. The stale air in
the room, though, made it impossible to just sit and wait so he opened
the window a crack and relaxed.
His eyes now stared at the briefcase at the top of the low rise stairs.
It was black with silver details, no lock. It was the only thing he had
stolen other than the money and the orb. As he walked up to it he
fancied giving it back, as a joke, but dismissed the idea.
Briefcase in hand he went into the oversized bedroom and sat it on the
bed before opening it. Money stared him in the face along with a
flawless glass orb that looked like a giant, hand sized marble. It was a
wonder that anyone knew it had any value at all, it looked just like a
plan glass ball, nothing special about it, no etchings, no colors,
nothing.
It was when he picked it up and felt the weight of it in his hand that
he knew it wasn't just a glass ball. There was a slight warmth to it and
it sent shivers down his spine. Holding it in his hand he turned around
and wondered what to do next. He didn't know how it worked, didn't know
how to use it. There wasn't any information on rituals or observations
of its use so he just stared at it.
"Maybe I need to picture a girl?" he thought out loud. It would make
sense to picture what he wanted to be, maybe the orb would take it from
there?
Jacob always liked Asian women, especially the Japanese, they were soft,
petite things that were quiet and respectful. They knew how to blend
into the background when they needed to and that's what he wanted to do,
to blend in.
He pictured a small woman, nearly shapeless in form with shoulder length
raven hair, the flat nose, slanted eyes and small feet. The more he
stood there picturing this woman the more his body started to tingle
until finally, when he visualized the last details and closed his eyes a
warm breeze enveloped him and left him feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
The sensation lasted a lifetime yet only moments and before he knew it
the semi cold hair touched his skin again.
When he opened his eyes again his perspective had changed slightly, the
room seemed bigger somehow, the ceilings a little taller. His eyes
trailed down until he caught sight of his empty hand, it was small with
pale skin that looked too smooth and too soft for a man to have. As his
eyes trailed down even more they got wider and wider until they landed
on a spot where his pride should have been.
A hand immediately came down to the area and he felt around, his pride,
his boys, they were gone! His slightly muscular chest was gone too,
replaced with two small, soft and squishy mounds of flesh that were
topped in pink button like nipples.
He had done it, he had used the orb!
"Oh, my, God-" he stopped in mid sentence, even his voice had changed!
It was a whisper, gentle and lady like. Everything happened so suddenly
and so perfectly, he still felt like himself on the inside but on the
outside he was a young, short Japanese woman.
And he was naked. Looking around he found his clothes, including his
socks and shoes, in a pile behind him, as if they had been blown off but
not violently. They looked as if they had drifted to the ground lazily,
enjoying their journey.
Taking a few steps to gather up his clothes he felt very strange,
usually there was something between his legs that made his stance wide
but now there was nothing there and it made it difficult to walk. His
balance was slightly off and those first few steps were goofy and
awkward at best.
Taking a few seconds to think he packed the clothes and set the orb back
into the briefcase to head to the bathroom, he wanted to know what he
looked liked before he covered himself up, it was just too astonishing.
The change was so complete he hardly felt different at all but at the
same time everything had changed.
In the bathroom was a wide mirror and showed him from the waist up.
Pale, smooth skin was all he could see other than the dark hair,
chocolate brown eyes and small shades of pink here and there. Gingerly
he raised his hands to feel his face as he inspected every inch of it,
marveling at how complete the transformation was. Even his fingernails
were more delicate, his skin truly smooth and his hair slightly shiny.
He took a seat on the toilet and looked at his legs, they were skinny
and long, almost awkward, as if he had chosen a girl that had just hit
puberty. The feet, though, were cute as could be, tiny and perfectly
proportioned. Giggling he wiggled his new toes and marveled as they
moved, they felt like toes but not how he remembered them.
Everything was like that, though. He still had two arms, two legs, ten
fingers, ten toes but, they were delicate and soft, not rough and
slightly grizzled like a man's. He remembered feeling ladies that had
skin like his, he remembered their touch and wondered a little bit why
there weren't more lesbians in the world. Surely girls preferred soft
and delicate things, not rough and aggressive things.
Shrugging his shoulders he got up and looked in the mirror again. He had
done a good job, he was truly a woman. His new face wasn't extremely
beautiful but it wasn't ugly, either. It was average, his new body was
average too, it wouldn't gain too much attention from anyone with the
lack of curves going on. No, he would be able to blend in quite well
indeed.
Then something confusing popped into his head, how was he going to think
of himself? Was he still a man or was he a woman now?
I'm still me, still think like me, still think like man, he thought to
himself as he stared at his new eyes. Maybe I should treat it like a
true disguise, a true new identity. Settling on the idea he nodded to
himself in satisfaction.
Everything was going to work out just fine.
