Author's Note:
Thank you to those that read the story and leave reviews, I am glad you
are enjoying it. I would like to say that I am writing this for another
person, I am given key points they want to happen and I fill in the
story around those points. As of now the story is going to be around
fifteen chapters long, possibly longer. My coconspirator suggested that
I post these chapters on this site to get feedback, once again thank you
to those who have taken the time to read the story and write a review.
Chapter Three
McDonald's was the easiest for Jacob to find first after he visited a
bank to get smaller bills. He did end up toting the briefcase with him,
it was something he wasn't going to leave behind in the apartment and he
wanted to keep all his cash with him, today was a day of shopping and he
needed all the money he had.
With a fist full of twenty dollar bills he got breakfast then wandered
around the streets looking for clothing stores and anywhere to buy food.
He did realize he would have to carry everything he had back to his
apartment so what he bought and how much of it had to be carefully
thought out. He was planning on only making the one trip then holing
back up in his apartment until he sorted out what he needed to do next.
Probably can't do that, he thought as a Macy's store loomed into view.
Groceries alone would weigh him down too much, adding clothes on top of
that and he wouldn't be able to carry it all back by himself.
No car, no friends, no help, he thought to himself as he entered the
clothing store. It had just opened and it was rather empty, a few
employees were still getting their stations ready so he helped himself
to finding the women's department.
What the hell do I buy? Jacob wondered as he stood in front of all the
clothes. The department itself was massive and the choices overwhelming.
He had no idea what to get because he didn't know what he was going to
be doing. Interview clothes crossed his mind but he didn't know what was
appropriate. Even for normal, everyday things, what should he wear?
"Can I help you find anything?" a soft and melodic voice asked from
behind him. Jacob had to steel his resolve and calm himself before he
turned around and smiled, she had startled him but he still had enough
wits about him to freeze instead of jump.
"I'm new," he said, "just moved to the area, I need a new wardrobe," he
answered and blushed slightly. The woman who stood in front of him was
mildly pretty, she wore a navy skirt and dress top, both flattering her
curves. The navy only made the woman's blond hair stand out and shine
more, the green eyes behind the thin framed glasses were slightly exotic
but mostly inviting. She was pretty, and she was smiling at him warmly.
"I can help you, then, I'm Miley," she said and led the young woman to
the back of the store.
Jacob, whom Miley called 'Rita', stayed silent the whole time only
nodding when the nice lady asked him a question. The more she helped him
the more he liked her, she was at least fashion smart and had a good
sense of humor. She was making him, or rather, Rita, very comfortable
while she helped him pick out clothes.
By the time they got to the shoes they had found a shared interest,
cars, and the conversation flowed smoothly from both. Jacob never
thought he would be able to pull off acting like a girl with another
girl but it didn't matter here. Cars weren't a girl subject but the
woman seemed to enjoy the discussion. She didn't have a car herself, the
city was too busy and she didn't live that far away from her work. She
did enjoy the classics, though, which were his favorite too.
"Thanks for helping," Jacob said as they went the cash register. He was
sure most of his money was gone but he didn't care. He had made a friend
and started to get used to his new body, the new voice, everything. The
woman made him feel comfortable in his new skin.
"It's my job," she responded with a smile. "I know how hard it can be
when you move to a new place and you don't know anyone." She smiled
again as she started to run the tags across the scanner.
"Where are you staying?" she asked and looked over the rim of her
glasses. This made Jacob shift a little bit, anytime a woman had looked
at him that way meant she was at least semi-interested in him.
"About eight blocks down and four over," he responded and nodded. "Found
a nice, quiet place. Don't know where a grocery store is, though," he
said and smiled sheepishly. He used his longer hair to start hiding his
face, he didn't know how to react to personal questions or even how to
read the woman's intentions. Was she bi? Lesbian? Or was she straight
and just really, really nice?
"There's one not that far from there, actually, I shop there," Miley
said while folding a pair of pants and putting them in the bag. "Leon
owns the place, he's local and gets most of his stuff from farms just
outside the city," she finished with yet another warm smile. "I can show
you after I get off work, I need to do some grocery shopping myself."
Jacob froze stiff, the woman, who he was starting to like, had just
offered to show him where the grocery store was. Sure they had spent a
few hours together but why was she so nice?
"Alright, with the purse and shoes your total is twenty-seven, twenty-
one, forty-six." The woman beamed a smile at her new found Asian friend
and wasn't too surprised when she hefted the briefcase onto the counter,
opened it and counted out twenty-seven, forty and handed it to her.
So peculiar, the woman thought as she made change and handed it back to
the girl.
"I get off after six, I can be at your place around seven, sound good?"
she asked and Rita nodded to her.
"Here's my address," the young girl said and handed a piece of paper
over with her address scribbled quickly onto it.
"No phone number?" Miley joked but Rita blushed and shook her head.
"Just arrived this morning," she said shifting the briefcase contents to
the purse. From what Miley could see it was all cash in large bills. She
tried not to pay any attention to it, the young girl probably had to do
it that way, especially if she came from outside the country.
The purse Rita was carefully stuffing full of money was a good one,
plenty of zippers and pockets to make it safe and secure. The only way
to steal something from it was to take the entire thing and as long as
Rita wore it over neck and shoulder it would be even that much more
safe.
Miley sighed quietly at Rita picked up all of her bags, she had gotten a
lot of clothes, a few pairs of shoes and even two weeks worth of
underwear, bras and socks. The poor petite girl could barely carry it
all as she stepped away from the counter, Miley almost offered to help
her but she didn't want to overstep her boundaries and she couldn't
leave work. Her lunch hour was far away and she was sure Rita had many
more things to do before she went grocery shopping. If she needed a
whole new wardrobe she probably needed dishes and other everyday things.
Rita smiled and nodded just before she backed into the entrance to leave
the building and Miley smiled and nodded. She looked at the door long
after the girl was gone thinking of how the experience went. Was she too
friendly? Not friendly enough? It was hard for her to find that fine
line and walk it; on more than one occasion she had accidentally flirted
with a girl and gave them the wrong impression. She was just being
herself, which was nice, caring and giving, apparently most lesbian
women were attracted to that.
Jacob made it home around lunch time. He didn't have enough arms to pick
up more food on the way back to his apartment so he unpacked everything
onto the bed and looked at it realizing he needed more things than he
thought.
Should have planned a lot better, he thought as he looked around the
room. There was only a bed with a single blanket in the bedroom with a
built in closet and a couch in the living room. Other than that there
was no furniture in the apartment, at all. He didn't even have dishes or
silverware.
Sighing in discontent Jacob changed clothes to something a little more
fashionable; a t-shirt with the shoulders cut out and a pair of boot cut
jeans. The pants made him feel more comfortable and less exposed. Once
dressed again he counted how much money he had left and left the
apartment again.
He didn't even have paper or a pen to make a list, which is what he
needed to do along with getting lunch. The only place he could think of
going to where he could sit in peace was a coffee shop. They would
probably let him borrow a pen and give him some receipt paper.
I wonder if they would let me bring in my own food? he thought as he
spied a sandwich shop down the street. He was on the same street as the
Macy's store was, it seemed to have everything he needed, shops,
restaurants and even a bar. He at least chose the right place to hunker
down and disappear.
The sandwich shop was what he finally settled on and got a large
pastrami on rye to go then headed to the coffee shop. As he suspected
they let him not only take his food in but gave him plenty of receipt
paper and a pen to make his list. He got an iced coffee to make the guy
behind the counter a little more happy about letting the little Asian
girl sit alone in the corner, at least she was a paying customer.
What do I need? Jacob thought as he sipped the iced coffee. He was
planning on staying in that apartment for a very long time, possibly a
year or a little longer. He needed to furnish the entire apartment and
that meant a dresser, more furniture for the living room, nightstands,
possibly a desk and even a computer and a TV. He wasn't about to spend
the year without internet and a TV, he needed to know what was going on
in the world and keep his eye on overseas economies so he could choose
the right place to live when the time came.
Dishes were another thing he needed but he didn't want to get too many.
Dishes were his least favorite thing to do but a glass, plate, fork,
knife and spoon were something he needed. Maybe a mug and a bowl too; he
was planning on loading up on frozen dinners and lunches to make his
life a little easier in the beginning; he didn't really like to cook and
usually ate out whenever he could. It was easy to do on the job and the
job kept him mostly fit.
I wonder if I need to worry about my 'figure'? he thought while looking
down at himself. He had no idea if how he usually ate would affect the
body he now had, he didn't even have an idea if he ever needed to shave
his legs or worry about 'aunt flow'.
That would be a nightmare, he sighed and closed his eyes.
"Are you alright miss?" a manly voice said gently and Jacob opened his
new eyes. The guy that sold her the coffee was standing across her table
looking at her with doe eyes. He was tan with dark hair and dark eyes,
cute by any standards.
"I'm fine," he answered with a slight smile. "Just have a lot to do," he
finished and nodded to the man.
"If you need anything let me know, my name's Jace." Jace smiled warmly
at Jacob, which made his insides squirm just a bit, but he still smiled
back and nodded. Jace nodded then went back to work, picking up trash
from a few tables then returning to his post behind the counter to
clean.
Lets try to avoid that, shall we? Jacob thought to himself. The last
thing he needed was a man interested in him, or rather, his feminine
body. It wasn't that he was apposed to homosexuality, it just made him a
little uncomfortable when a guy so openly showed concern and interest so
quickly.
It's a really good disguise, he reminded himself. He had to play the
part, at least most of it. He could still pull off being a tomboy,
couldn't he? He himself usually related to tomboy girls more than the
average woman. They usually shared the same interests and kind of humor
he did, which made their friendship that much easier. They didn't like
drama, either, something he could also agree with. They didn't mind
saying when they got bored and wanted to do something else, wasting time
wasn't their style.
Wasting his own time sitting in the coffee shop wasn't something Jacob
had planned on doing for the rest of the day but it's what he ended up
doing anyways. The list just got longer and longer the more he thought
about it and he had to ask for more paper so he could break his master
list into smaller, more prioritized lists. Things he needed right away
he would get right away, things that could wait, like furniture, could
wait until he built up more money.
Speaking of money, he thought and looked through his bag. He still had a
few thousand dollars left in cash but he didn't want to spend it all. He
needed some sort of safety net just in case he couldn't find work soon
enough. Paying rent was more important than anything else, he had to
stay in that building, problem free.
He grabbed dinner at the same sandwich shop before heading back to his
apartment. Once there he punched in the key code and even before taking
off his purse he searched the entire apartment.
Good, no one's been here and there are no surprises. Jacob thought that
if he had been followed they would know what room was his and tear it
apart. It would be a different story, though, if the room belonged to
someone else, like an innocent girl.
The sandwich was gone in a few minutes and Jacob was looking through his
small closet, he had packed the orb away in a shoebox and buried it
under the rest of the ones he had to hide it. He knew he would need a
better place than that but it was all he could do. He didn't have a bank
he could use, as a matter of fact, he had nothing.
"Not even an ID," he said to himself and sighed again. He did arrange to
get a new ID but since he didn't know who or what he was going to look
like he had to wait. He had told his contact that he would meet him a
few nights after he disappeared; it was still a risk going to him so
soon but he needed an ID. He couldn't get beer without it.
A knock on the door startled him- was it seven already? Jacob looked
around for a clock in the bedroom but there wasn't one, he had to run to
the kitchen and look at the microwave, it was indeed a few minutes past
seven.
Quickly straightening his hair and smoothing out his clothes Jacob took
a deep breath and looked through the peep hole. Miley was standing on
the other side wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Her hair was still pulled up
and her glasses framed those gorgeous green eyes of hers.
Jacob opened the door and smiled when Miley smiled. "Hi," they both said
at the same time and Jacob giggled like a little girl. After a little
embarrassment he grabbed his purse and shut the door behind him.
"Your landlord let me in," Miley explained as they went to the lift.
Jacob's room was on the seventh floor out of twelve and the door
downstairs needed a key code to get in. "Once I said I was going to get
you to do some shopping he almost shoved me through the door," she
finished and Jacob smiled.
"He's nice like that," he replied and Miley agreed.
"He seemed really happy that I was going to get you." Her statement
sounded more like a question to him and he debated on giving up vital
information to Miley. He could tell her that she rented out the
apartment for months without moving in but what if someone got to her?
That information would be key in figuring out who he was.
"Just moved in," he explained again. "He's a really nice guy and likes
to see other people happy, too." Miley accepted that explanation with
another smile and changed the subject back to cars once they were
outside and on their way to the grocery store.
As they grew closer to the store Miley started to talk about Leon, the
owner of the store, and how he was like Rohan, Rita's landlord. He was
nice and caring, he hated to see people struggle and as a result he had
a unique tab system for the store. The people that shopped there always
paid on time, though, and he was sure that it was because of his
kindness.
"Sounds like a nice guy," Jacob agreed and wondered what he looked like.
Was he another old man or a younger, cuter one? It was imperative the he
found out, it would determine how he was supposed to act around the guy.
"So, is he cute?" Jacob asked innocently but Miley blushed, as if she
had a crush on the man.
"You could say that," Miley said and her cheeks burned an even deeper
red. "Why? Do you want to know?" she asked her small friend and it was
her turn to blush.
"I don't know what kind of guys live around here, I'd rather find one
outside of a bar," she said and leaned into Miley who understood
completely what her friend was talking about. Meeting men in bars may
have been the stereotypical way of doing it but it wasn't the safest.
She herself rather meet a guy at the grocery store than a bar.
"Here we are," Miley said with a smile. It was still a little daylight
out from the summer hours but the light for the sign was still on. It
simply said "Groceries" outside but looking through the windows it
looked more like a co-op. The store was built into a much larger
building with apartments above it. The store itself was large and was
very deep, only four check out isles were up front but they were full
with small lines behind them.
At least it's well known and a lot of people shop here, Jacob thought as
he picked up a hand basket. If people were there then it meant they
liked it, a lot of people meant it was a good place to shop.
"What are you shopping for?" Miley asked as they started to walk to the
back of the store.
"Frozen dinners," Jacob said with absolution. He knew he couldn't cook
anything because he didn't have anything to cook with. Anything other
than frozen dinners would sit and rot.
"Is that all?" Miley asked and she stopped to look at her friend.
"I don't like to cook," Jacob explained sheepishly. "I also don't have
anything to cook with yet," he finished and was relieved when Miley gave
him the 'oh, I get it' face.
Jacob stayed in the frozen food section making sure all of his meals
were microwavable then headed to the cereal section. Oatmeal was his
favorite breakfast and would do, he could make it in a styrofoam cup if
he needed to and that was his next stop. After that he headed over to
the small hygiene section and picked up a few bars of soap, some razors
and shampoo, enough to last him a month at least.
When he got to the checkout Miley was right behind him. She had taken
her time and picked out a healthy array of food including fresh fruit
and vegetables. It was enough to last her for a week and was what she
usually got.
"Promise me that after you get settled in you'll let me teach you how to
cook," Miley said to Rita in the line. "You can't live like this
forever," she teased and her small friend smiled.
"I promise," Rita said and hefted her haul up to the counter to be
counted. She shuffled in her purse trying to remember if she had brought
enough money or not. He had stashed most of it away in a shoebox before
leaving the apartment.
Leon was at the cash register but Jacob didn't realize it until Miley
said hi to him. When Jacob looked up he blanched white then blushed.
Leon was a young, probably younger than he was, with tan Italian skin,
raven hair and gorgeous blue eyes. The combination was startling and
reminded him of Miley and her green eyes. They were gorgeous and so was
the man behind the counter.
Once Jacob saw the total his eyes went wide, he new he didn't have
enough to cover the bill before he even took it out of the purse.
"So sorry, I didn't think it would be that much, I can bring the rest in
after I get home-" he was cut short by Leon who had raised his hand.
"Don't worry about it, tabs are due at the beginning of every month, you
have a few weeks if you need it," he said with a warm voice and an even
warmer smile. It made Jacob feel terrible for not bringing enough money,
if he had brought a hundred more he could have covered the bill no
problem.
Poor planning again, he thought to himself as he thanked Leon and
started to bag his groceries.
Miley didn't have a problem checking out or bagging her goods, she even
helped her friend bag and carry back everything to the apartment.
"Thanks again," Jacob said as Miley put the last of his bags on the
counter. "You really didn't have to help me home but I appreciate it."
"Think nothing of it," Miley said and smiled. In an instant Jacob felt
attracted to the blond woman in front of him and after that instant an
awkward silence ensued. If he had been a man he would have kissed her,
just a little one that was gentle. He knew after that kiss she would
smile and say goodnight but now the chance was gone and they both stood
there fidgeting.
"I'd better get home," Miley finally said and he nodded.
"Thanks again!" he called as she walked down the hallway to the lift.
Miley smiled and waved to him before the door closed behind her.
Too complicated, Jacob thought as he put his haul in the freezer. He
liked Miley, she was nice, smart, pretty and a tomboy. She was
everything he would look for in a girl.
Except he was a girl now, too, and Miley probably wasn't a lesbian.
No harm in finding out, Jacob thought with a smile.
