Chapter Four
If shopping wasn't bad enough to get all the essentials Jacob felt like
God was punishing him, or rather, women in general, especially when he
had to take Miley to go shopping for new razors, he inadvertently gotten
the wrong kind and ended up cutting himself rather badly.
It had been a week after Jacob arrived at his new apartment when he
finally got to the things he needed in the bathroom: a brush, toothbrush,
the wrong kind of razors, a certain kind of deodorant, simple makeup(on
Miley's request), and even lotion. Yes, it had come down to buying a
scented lotion because Jacob's skin became dry every time after he
showered or bathed.
Shaving had been a bad enough experience for him, or at least he thought
so. Instead of shaving his face, though, it was his legs that he was
concerned with. He had cut himself a few times and he was nervous, he
didn't want to cut himself any more badly because he knew how much it
hurt.
Makeup, though, was really daunting. Jacob was still a man, on the
inside, and even though he considered himself wearing a disguise wearing
makeup wasn't going to be a part of it. He thought he looked fine without
it and started a philosophical debate with Miley of why women needed
makeup. Her answer wasn't that women needed it just that they had the
disposable income to buy it and why not buy it? Most women didn't have
hobbies like men to fix up cars or something else to spend money on.
Makeup was the art of making oneself irresistible when one was available.
Looking nice made her feel better, too.
Jacob couldn't argue with her, if she felt more confident when she
thought she looked nice then there was no other reason to need makeup. He
just wasn't ready to start putting it on.
I need to start looking for a job, Jacob thought while taking a bath. It
was Sunday, one week after he stole and ran from his old life so he could
create a new one. So far everything had gone well for him; he had the
bare essentials for living in the apartment including new bed sheets,
towels and some dishes. Miley had helped him pick out everything all the
while being a good friend. She never asked where he came from or where he
used to live, she acted like he had no background other than just having
moved to the city, which was a good thing.
He even got in touch with his contact about getting all the necessary
papers like a driver's license, social security card and birth
certificate. The meeting had been awkward only because he had to refer to
himself in the third person, like he was really gone, like he had split
and already left the country. That was also a good thing, his contact was
more than likely going to tell anyone who asked that he had indeed left.
His excuse for being Rita and needing papers was that she needed an
unofficial witness protection and that 'Jacob' had helped her to find a
better and safer life.
With his papers in order he could find work anywhere, and finally buy
some beer; beer had been the one thing he wanted since he left and
tonight he was going to celebrate by buying as much as he could carry
home.
Feeling fresh and mostly relaxed Jacob got dressed in a pair of jeans and
a nice t-shirt. The weather outside was warm enough but the sun had
already mostly set and the temperature was getting cooler. He still
didn't bother with the 'shoes' that Miley had helped him pick out a week
ago, the high heels were a death trap and the last thing he wanted was to
break an ankle walking back to his apartment. He decided that after he
had found a job he would start to wear them to get practice in just
incase the job he got needed nice clothes.
The walk to the grocery store was brisk but not uncomfortable. He had
only made two trips to it since he arrived but Leon already new him. It
was apparent when Jacob walked in and Leon nodded with a smile in his
direction. Jacob tried to ignore it, he knew just by that smile and nod
that Leon liked him and it made him feel awkward. They were both men,
though on the outside he was a woman, he still wasn't ready for heavily
interacting with other men.
Ice cold beer was his goal, anyways, he didn't have to pay anything else
attention. As long as he had his ID, which he did, he just wanted to get
the beer and get out. Checking out was going to be the real test, if Leon
gave her a 'hard time' about buying just beer then he would have to flirt
with him, something Jacob didn't want to do. He at least settled his tab
the same day after he finished putting everything away at home, the last
thing he wanted was to owe any debts.
"Is this everything for you?" Leon asked gently and with a smile as Jacob
got up to the counter. His register was the only one open in the evening
hour forcing him to come face to face with another guy, one that liked
him.
With a blush Jacob nodded and gave a small smile. The bashfulness came
out purely on instinct and he let it take over. He remembered how Rohan
treated him when he just let go and acted how a real woman would act when
he told his lie and he was none the wiser about it. Maybe this time Leon
would get the hint to leave him alone if he didn't really talk to him.
Leon's reaction, though, wasn't what he expected. The man also smiled and
blushed at him, not a good sign. Jacob's instincts were now telling him
to abort the conversation as soon as possible, he needed to get away
before something happened.
"Do you need help carrying this back?" Leon asked to Jacob's horror and
he tried to tell him 'no' but he froze. It was like he was a deer in the
headlights and the sudden urge to say 'yes' instead of 'no' blurted out
before he could control himself.
Dear God, why me? he thought as he paid for the beer and let Leon take
both cases for him. The owner told one of his employees to close for him
and they waved him off before they both left.
Jacob was stunned silent the whole way back to his apartment. Leon didn't
seem like he could find words, either, so they walked in silence. It was
only when they got to the door of the apartment that Leon asked if he
could come in.
"Miley told me you just moved in last weekend," Leon said while putting
the beer away.
"Uh, yeah," Jacob replied as he put his ID back into his purse on the
counter. He had only take it and cash to get the beer thinking it would
be easier to carry back. He was right about one thing, it was easy to get
back but now he had a guest in his home that he felt he should get rid
off.
It didn't happen like that, though. Jacob, not even thinking, invited
Leon to stay and have a beer with him.
"Miley said you might need someone to show you around town, you know,
until you get used to things. Where do you work?" Leon was still in the
kitchen, up the short flight of stairs, Jacob had moved down to the
single couch in the living room with a beer in hand.
"I don't," he replied firmly so Leon could hear him. "Not yet, anyways,"
he added quickly. It was true, he didn't have work and he needed a job.
"So you're looking for work?" Leon asked coming down the short flight of
stairs. Jacob adjusted his position so he was sitting sideways on the
couch and nodded as Leon came around to sit. He looked at him for a
second before taking a swig of his beer. "Ever work in a grocery store?"
he asked and Jacob shook his head. He also paled at the mention of
working for him, if he was reading all the signals correctly a
relationship was going to result unless he did something about it, made
his feelings clear.
But how could he? He didn't know how to do it without hurting Leon, or
insulting him. Leon could be just like Miley, nice, and not have any
interest in him whatsoever. If Jacob was wrong and Leon got mad he would
be down a friend that he needed.
"No, I don't have much work experience," Jacob replied. It would have to
be true, he was trying to pass himself off as a young Asian woman,
hopefully his age would vouch for his lack of experience in the real
world.
"Fresh out of college," Jacob suddenly continued. A lie was fabricating
quickly in his mind as he looked at Leon and he nodded. "Moved out on my
own as soon as I graduated, had enough money saved up to live somewhere
while I looked for work," he finished. The story was very satisfying to
him for some reason. Maybe it was because it was giving himself a
background. He didn't want to be a mystery to anyone, didn't want to give
someone a reason to go digging around in his past only find he didn't
have one.
"What'd you major in?" Leon asked. He thankfully skipped over asking what
college he had gone too or even where he lived prior to moving into the
city.
"General studies," Jacob replied with a smile. "I like to be well
rounded," he finished with a nod and a swig from his bottle.
The evening continued with the two talking, Leon thinking that a young
and pretty Asian girl was having a good conversation with him and Jacob
thinking he was making an excellent friend. It would come in handy if he
couldn't find work fast enough and had to run up his a tab at the store a
bit.
After the fifth beer on Leon's side and the second on Jacob's the two got
a little closer. It was subtle but they both found themselves leaning
against one another, alcohol clearly swimming in their heads. Jacob was
too relaxed for his own good, leaning against another man was testament
to that but he didn't care. He felt...sultry? Seductive? At least a little
of the two and he found himself being very, very curious.
Leon thought he was a girl and for all purposes he was. His disguise was
a new body entirely and in all essence he was a female. Leon could never
tell the difference, what would be the harm in a little simple pleasure?
Rita leaned into Leon and sighed slightly. The raven haired man smiled
and put his cheek on top of her head. He hadn't been so relaxed around a
woman in ages. Despite her young age he felt a connection, at least a
little one. He wasn't looking for a serious relationship but having a
friend of the opposite sex was more and more appealing.
And she was becoming more and more appealing to him. She looked up from
his shoulder, her almond eyes squinting slightly as she smiled at him. It
was the perfect time, the mood was just right, the two were positioned
just so, Leon leaned down and Rita's eyes closed slowly and then- their
lips touched. The softness of Rita and firmness of Leon was more than
arousing to both, Jacob was electrified in places he had never felt
before and Leon was feeling the familiar pang of longing. It had been too
long since his last encounter with a woman, would Rita consider them

Jacob felt the same way and broke the kiss gently. Even though he felt a
strange fire building he wasn't about to have sex with another man.
"I should get going," Leon said. He had felt the vibe that Rita wasn't
about to rush into anything with him, which was fine, he could wait. As
long as it eventually happened, he could wait.
Rita nodded to him and got up to walk him to the door. "Thanks for
inviting me in," Leon said and just before leaving gave Rita a peck on
the cheek. She smiled and blushed at him. She even watched and waited
until he got on the lift and the doors closed.
Shutting the door silently Jacob took a deep breath in, held it for a few
seconds then let it go. He was very tipsy, even after just two beers, and
it was amazing. He let that lower his inhibitions enough to be curious
