Chapter Two
Sensations overwhelmed the new Jacob as he explored the skin on his
arms. The bed was where he was, still naked, enjoying the feel of cool
air and a textured comforter. It wasn't until he rolled over that he had
noticed just how cold it was. In a much too feminine voice he giggled
and wrapped his slender arms around himself enjoying the softness of his
own body. Even his new hair held his attention for several minutes, it
was long, soft and raven black, much different than his clean cut brown
hair had been.
I wonder if I need to-
A sudden but quiet knock startled him and set his heart racing, who
could possibly be bothering him? Had someone already tracked him down?!
In a panic he raced and grabbed up his old suit jacket, smashing it to
his lithe torso and carefully went up the low rise stairs to the door.
At first he checked under the door, the slight space revealed only one
pair of feet but they weren't in black shoes, they were in slightly off
white slippers.
Seeing the slippers only confused him more so he stood on his tiptoes
and looked through the peek hole. Who he saw baffled him for a few
moments before he announced himself.
"Rita? Are you okay? It's Rohan, the landlord? I thought I heard
something early this morning, I just wanted to check to see if you were
okay."
Check on me? Jacob thought to himself. As far as he knew the landlord
had never met the girl now in the apartment he had been renting out, why
would he check on her now? Had he really made that much noise when he
came in?
Carefully he unlatched the door and slowly opened it. The suit jacket
was all that covered him so the door became his barrier as he looked doe
eyed at the landlord around it. Being bashful wasn't one of his strong
suits but he seemed to know what to do, the landlord looked at him as if
he was seriously concerned.
"Are you alright, Rita?" Rohan asked, indeed concerned. The small girl
looked frightened at best and all he could see her wearing was a jacket
that couldn't have belonged to her, it was too big and baggy plus she
wasn't even wearing it, she just held it against herself.
"I'm fine," she squeaked then blushed. The concerned lines in Rohan's
forehead only deepened and he took on a careful stance.
"Are you sure?" he asked gently and even though she nodded to him tears
started to well in her eyes.
Jacob didn't know what was going on, it just felt like the right thing
to do and he couldn't hold back the sniffles that ensued.
"My boyfriend," he managed to get out through a few sniffs, "he broke up
with me and took everything he could carry, he came back while I was out
and took the rest of my things-" real tears started to pour down his
cheeks now and soon he was wrapped in the landlord's gentle arms, the
door no longer protecting him.
Rohan was an older man but fit, tan from years of hard work outside,
dark hair peppered with grey and deep brown eyes that could melt
anyone's heart. He was more akin to a father figure for everyone in the
building rather than a landlord but he was okay with it. Treating people
fairly, keeping them happy and safe, that was all he was concerned with.
And now one of his tenants, one he hadn't met until that moment, needed
him. The poor girl only had a suit jacked hugged tightly against her
small frame, everything else lost to her. Quickly he glanced around the
apartment and saw that only a single couch remained in the room along
with the refrigerator in the kitchen. Did she even have her bed or did
her ex boyfriend take that too? She must have done something to get his
jacket, maybe they had a fight? Either way he knew the girl had nothing
and he felt sorry for her.
"Stay here, I'll get you some clothes," and he was gone before Jacob
could protest. The landlord was determined to at least get her something
to wear so she could go out and get a new set of clothes.
"Margie, do you have anything you don't wear anymore?" he asked his
older sister as he headed to her bedroom.
"As a matter of fact, I do," she said from her perch in her favorite
chair. The older woman was crocheting a blanket for the coming winter,
one of many, as she usually gave out a few during Christmas as gifts.
"There's a bag of clothes in my room that I was going to donate today,
you can take some from there," she called after her brother.
When he came back out into the living room holding an oversized t-shirt,
a pair of shorts and some old flip flops she gave him the fisheye. "Why
do you need my clothes?" she asked him, pausing in her work.
"You know Rita? The girl no one's ever seen?" His sister nodded slowly.
"Her bastard of a boyfriend took everything except the couch," he
continued bitterly.
"I hope he's an 'ex' boyfriend now?" his sister replied mildly shocked.
"He is and she needs some clothes so she can go out and get new ones,"
he finished then left.
As he walked down the hall he noticed that Rita had her face stuck
partway out the door looking for him, he smiled as he came back to her
with a few pieces of clothes and a pair of flip flops apologizing that
it wasn't very much.
"They're not the best but it's something. If that bastard ever comes
back you tell me and I'll call the cops for you," he said shaking his
finger slightly. The last thing Rohan needed was a dead beat bastard
bothering someone in his building or worse, possible fighting and
possible violence, he had seen it happen before.
"I will," she said and gave the man a another hug before bidding him
farewell. Rohan wandered halfway down the hall before looking back at
the door where Rita was. She had been a private girl, no one ever saw
her come or go, sometimes he thought no one even lived there but today
there was proof.
"Poor girl," he said to himself, shaking his head. If he had known about
her situation he would have stepped in at a moments notice. Her
boyfriend had to have been very sneaky to get all of her things out of
her apartment without anyone in the building noticing.
Can't believe I didn't plan for this, Jacob thought to himself as he
slipped on the shorts and loose t-shirt Rohan had given him. What did he
think he was going to wear? His old suit?
Picking up his old clothes Jacob looked at them closely. They were much
too large for him now, at best it would look like he was playing dress
up in his own garments.
How much did I shrink? he asked himself looking at the pants. As a man
he was just over six feet tall with broad shoulders and a good jaw line.
Being so tall made it harder to steal things at times but he managed to
work with his height.
Now he had to have been at least a foot and a half shorter than he was,
the pants nearly came up to his armpits and the shirt hung well over his
hands when he tried it on. The shoes were now clown shoes to him and
they flopped uselessly when he tried to take a few steps. Instead he
grabbed the flip flops and put them on, heaving a great sigh.
He hadn't planned for everything, he realized, as he opened the empty
fridge. There weren't even any condiments, he never bothered to stock
the apartment with anything. The couch, bed and fridge were included
when he rented the place out. He was even lucky enough to have his own
washer and dryer tucked away in a closet but other than that the
cupboards were empty, no food, no dishes, nothing.
"Looks like I need more than just clothes," he said to himself mildly
depressed. If he had been thinking far enough ahead he would have gotten
at least a few clothes and some food so he could just sit back and relax
for a few days. Dishes and other things could wait, at least for a
while, especially if he bought frozen dinners and plastic forks.
He didn't have time to waste, though, his stomach was already growling
at him for not having breakfast. He had been up all night running, he
didn't even have time to sleep let alone scout the area for places to
shop. But how was he going to carry enough cash to get what he needed?
He couldn't carry around the briefcase, it would look too odd to anyone
else; a small girl toting a large black briefcase. It would look like
she had stolen it. He didn't trust the pockets on the shorts, what if
someone pick pocketed him or the money fell out? The shorts were made
for women and had shallow pockets, no wonder ladies had purses.
What if the first thing I get is a purse? He thought to himself. It
would be better than the briefcase and look more natural, he was a girl
now. A girl with a purse was better than a girl with a briefcase.
The thought of carrying a purse, though, sort of bothered him. He still
thought of himself as a man, wearing a disguise. Problem was, he had
never been disguised as a woman before. He had no idea how to act, what
to wear or what to do around others.
Can't be bothered with that right now, now I need food, possibly some
smaller bills to get some McDonald's or something, he thought while
walking back to his bedroom. The briefcase loomed at him, looking much
larger than it had before. It was open for all the world to see, the
glass orb tucked into a corner surrounded by mounds of cash.
"What to do with you?" he asked the orb as he picked it up. It was
noticeably heavier now, making the reality of Jacob's situation sink in
a little bit more. He was a girl now, a much smaller girl than he was a
man and now he was much weaker as a result.
Would I be able to defend myself? he wondered as he tucked the orb away
under a pillow. It would be more difficult, that was for sure, if
anyone, especially a larger man, wanted to mug her.
Better get going then, he thought to himself. It was still early
morning, crimes rarely happened in the mornings and the neighborhood he
picked was a slightly nicer one. It was clean and well maintained but it
wasn't high end. Average was what anyone would call it.
An average home for an average girl, he thought as he left the building.
Food and a purse were at the top of his list.
