"So Nathan, how did you first learn that Trisha was not born as a girl?"
Most people were done eating, and Sarah had told us all about her new job,
but it was my mom's opening shot to Nathan, at least during this
conversation.
Nathan chuckled quickly, "Oh this is a great story! I'm in Prof.
Ballard's Creative Writing class, and it's the first day. He starts
things off with an icebreaker exercise. Everyone is sitting in a circle
and we are to take turns saying our name, what we did that summer, and a
little something about why we are in the class. I don't even remember
what I said. But it gets to be Trisha's turn, and I'd never even met her
before, and she says 'Over the summer I was magically transformed from a
middle aged man, into a young woman by a leprechaun who was upset that I'd
stolen his pot of gold. On a related note, I've been trying to polish up
my skill at telling outrageous and entertaining lies, which is why I am
taking this class.' Everyone laughed and the next person took their turn.
It was almost a year before I finally realized, by piecing together many
clues, that she actually hadn't been completely lying about that! The
fact that she was a transsexual was literally the very first thing I ever
heard her say!"
I squeezed his hand. We were sitting next to each other and holding hands
under the table. The first Thanksgiving with your girlfriend's family had
to be tricky, and he was doing great. He seemed relaxed, even though I
knew he wasn't. As long as I could keep him from talking religion with
Uncle Tim, everything would be fine.
"Every transsexual has to struggle with figuring out at what stage of
knowing someone they should tell about their past. I've had a lot of luck
telling people about it very early on, but making it look like a joke or a
blatant lie, and then letting them decide to slowly take it seriously at
their own pace. I don't know if that would work for other transsexuals or
not; it might be hard to pull off if you aren't heavily blessed with the
gift of blarney. By the way, Prof. Bollard asked me to expand that
icebreaker line into a short story for our short story project. I think I
still have it somewhere."
There was a bit of a pause and my dad said, "So, Nathan, how do you fancy
the Cub's chances next season?"
No! No! No! I had weathered enough. I had been through so many changes.
I had resisted my fate and succumbed to it. You could change my gender,
my name, the city I live in, my career ambitions. But no amount of
upbringing, or magic, or fate, or, I glanced at Nathan and my dad
nattering away happily, even love, would ever make me into a Cubs fan!
This is just a work of fiction, and all the names and events are made up.
Trisha's short story is "Pot of Gold" and is available on Fictionmania. I
love the ambiguity that I can't tell if Trisha has led a more realistic
life, and just uses fantasy to cope, or has led a fantastic life, and is
playing things a little more realistically while trying to draw her
boyfriend into the deep end slowly. I suppose it depends mostly on which
way I can come up with a good next story for first. I can't continue the
fantastic line, unless I can come up with 2-3 more appropriate "doozies"
for her. They'd need to have tickled Fergus' funny bone and seemed like
apt revenge at the time, without actually being quite evil or malicious.
It's a tricky line to walk. Feedback and suggestions are certainly
appreciated.
