Becoming a Teenage Girl - Pt 9

The timeline of the chapter is from mid September 1987 to mid December 1987
(upto the start of the school holidays).

Not even a light frost on the ground that morning could keep the spring out
of my walk as I headed for the bus stop for the beginning of the final term
of school for the year.
For me, the just finished 2 week of holidays had been at times, slow and
dragging. That's no to say that I didn't have fun during the break but
admittedly when there was nothing happening, time had dragged by slowly.
Bernadette had (another) new boyfriend, so for her, any time not spent with
him had also meant inflicting her sulking on me. Regardless of how many
times we went to the park, to town or somewhere else together (when she
wasn't going out with Tony of course) she suffered from the "boyfriend
blues" and at times was like a wet blanket.
But now I could go to school and again enjoy being around others my own age
and I knew that not all of them had boyfriends who they'd be moping over.
Greg and Mark were both outside Greg's gate as I crossed the train tracks
and their usual greetings and inquiries as to how my holidays went, were
reciprocated in kind.
The holidays may have only been a fortnight long but to me, Mark seemed to
have changed in someway, although exactly how couldn't be described. He just
looked and acted differently, well to my way of thinking anyhow.
When the bus pulled up at Natalie's stop, she got on and sat down beside me
and it was as if nothing had changed at all. We'd met a few times during the
holidays and nattered over shakes in Culcairn, exchanging gossip and the
like so her greetings this morning were her usual friendly kind.
In each class later on that day, it was as if the teachers had rehearsed
their opening lines which were always the same, reminding us that our end of
year exams were in 3 months and would determine our level of examination for
next year.
I already knew that my 4th form (they call it year 10 now days)school
certificate exam levels would all be sat at A (advanced) level and most of
the other kids had probably already decided at what levels they wished to be
examined. Still each teacher was at pains to remind us of how important our
exam results were for this year.
Perhaps the faculty's intentions were to reinforce the need not to treat the
forthcoming exams in late November as a cram and jam exercise but knowing
most of my classmates well enough by now, I knew that several of them didn't
find the need to study until 2 weeks before an end of year exam and still
pass at A level to be the usual way of things.
That first day back did have its interesting moments. The game of "who's hit
the big P" was in full flow. Now to the best of my knowledge, all except one
girl who I knew had reached puberty, yet with boys it was a bit different as
boys tend to mature more slowly and it was fun to listen to the voices
looking for those who had suddenly developed bass voices.
In all of my classes the only ones speaking with high pitched voices NOW
were the girls as I found out when a few of the late bloomers put up hands
to proudly answer questions with deep voices!
Anyway, spring was now with us again and aside from the odd coy glance of
students at others they seemed to have acquired a new perspective of, life
was pretty good.
On Friday on the bus going home Nat and I arranged to go horse riding after
church on Sunday, in part so she could show me her new horse aside from the
hopes of her meeting Craig, who lived on the other side of Henty and who she
fancied big time.
Saturday morning was spent supporting Bernie's hockey team win another one
sided game, before she was back to the farm to get ready to get ready to go
out and meet Tony for milkshakes at the local milk bar in Henty. I knew that
she was serious about Tony because she didn't even want to go shopping after
the game so eager was she to get home and get changed and go out.
The local pool wouldn't be opening until the end of September so I was
simply going to stay at home and practice the guitar which I was definitely
getting better at (along with the saxophone).
Now the good thing about Swampview was that Uncle Bill had purchased 2
horses several years ago for his daughters so that when car lifts could not
be arranged, it was easy to simply saddle up a horse and ride the 3-4 miles
into town instead of walking or cycling. I offered to saddle up Cherry
(Cherokee) for Bernie while she was getting showered and changed which she
thanked me for.
As she rode off, I went back inside and picked up the guitar and started to
strum a few chords. Before I knew it I was improvising and changing chords
to current songs and was so engrossed in it, that it was Bernie coming back
that made me aware that it was now after 5 and Daisy still had to be milked.
Saturday evening was spent with Bernie wistfully telling me about her time
with Tony and how she was missing him already etc, etc. Like I've told you
all in earlier chapters, it can get 'pretty' boring living on a farm with no
real close neighbours and not being old enough to have a license and be able
to drive somewhere and with it not being movie weekend.
Sunday and our usual church outing, which Natalie and I firmed up our
meeting time for later on and to which Bernie was invited along (since Tony
had a previous engagement). So after church and on arriving back home, we
changed out of our Sunday best and proceeded to saddle up Cherry and Apache
and headed off to a nearby creek come temporary swimming pool to meet up
with Natalie.
We got there to find Natalie and Craig pashing off furiously and it was
clearly apparent that our arrival had possibly been a dampener on things as
Natalie's jeans were unbuttoned at the top when she stood up flustered to
greet us.
Much (I bet) to Craig's disappointment, Natalie suggested we all ride over
to Becks which was a well known local landmark and check it out. So the 4 of
us mounted up and slowly ambled our horses towards Becks. Craig then had to
endure listening to the inane chatter of 3 teenage girls as we rode along
discussing this and that speaking in guarded terms about matters which guys
couldn't begin to understand even if they were rocket scientists.
Perhaps Nat was grateful for our earlier interruption because when we got to
Becks there were several others waiting around and talking. We spent a
leisurely hour or so gossiping leaving Craig and another guy bored stiff to
the point that they eventually announced they were leaving and mounted up
and rode off.
As soon as they were gone, Cheryl and Denise started the interrogation on
Nat and her new toy Craig. Nat just laughed it all off, but admitted on the
way back to the main road that if Bernadette and I hadn't come along
shortly, she didn't know what would have eventuated, as she looked at Bernie
with a look that only girls who have boyfriends could understand.
I can still vividly remember that weekend, as days blurred into one another
and then turned into weeks. Tony became a passing trend with Bernadette and
at one time she even had a date with Craig one Saturday evening!
The one other notable event back then was that Michelle and Dominic's
parents brought them a karaoke machine (well actually it was a used machine
that had been upgraded) and we spent a lot of time at their place rehearsing
songs and the like. It was such simple and pleasant fun that we enjoyed, it
was always going to be hard to grow up and become adults one day.
Bernie's school hockey team were premiers in 1989 and then it was onto
netball. We sat our exams in November and as expected both of us got good
passes setting us up for fourth year.
December rolled around and with exams out of the way and long holidays just
a few weeks away there was an air of fun permeating around the school and
both teachers and students alike were enjoying the atmosphere. In fact once
the 4th form exams had finished the atmosphere at Culcairn High was like a
party festival. Sure we were learning (the teachers weren't THAT willing to
let us get away with anything) but it seemed to be more pleasant and science
class experiments were a complete hoot.
Music and Maths (my best two subjects aside from commerce and geography) had
me wishing that I only had those 2 subjects each day. Even Friday afternoon
Domestic science double period were easy to handle.
Last day of term (and year) was declared a uniform free day and so both
girls and guys were dressed to suitably impress. It had been made clear to
every one that any inappropriate clothing would not be tolerated and would
incur detentions that would start from next term and almost every student
took the hint and towed the line.
Since the 6th form had not had to come back to school after their exams, it
was the 5th formers who were now setting the trends. On that last day, I
couldn't find one 5th form girl who didn't look like a knockout. Even in our
own year, everyone looked quite dazzling. The "princesses" were obviously
the scene stealers in their outfits, but a few of us "lesser gifted" girls
stood out as well.
It was true that many a teenage romance started that day as well as a few
hearts getting crushed as well. But it was to be 1990 that was to be the
highlight for me.
