Welcome to Gateway
By Lissa
The July sun beat down mercilessly on the streets, making the asphalt
walkways feel like they were about to melt into a tar swamp. The people of
Gateway, Kansas were steaming as well, seeking refuge in air-conditioned
houses or shops, while the farmers in the outlying areas desperately kept
watering their crops. Gateway had been founded along one of the old pilgrim
trails west, and then kept alive by an old fort which grew into a military
base. Apart from that there was little except cornfields, the odd industry,
the downtown city center complete with mall, and many churches once built
to save the souls of the miserable settlers and backwoods residents. Once,
Gateway had been the gateway to the west, a town through which wagon trains
passed weekly on their way further towards the fabled Pacific coast. Now,
it was just another small town in the middle of nowhere whose glory days
were well over a century past.
On this day, however, the town center bore witness to something unusual. In
an alleyway behind two ancient brick buildings, the hot air sparkled and a
wind formed from nowhere, tearing up trash into a makeshift dust devil. As
the static charge of the air increased, suddenly a large rip in the very
fabric of the dusty air opened. A shimmering electric blue-white portal
opened in a vaguely elliptic shape, and as it did, a figure stepped out. A
young woman, apparently not much older than 17-18 years old blinked against
the mid-day sun as she touched down on the filthy pavement of Gateway. The
portal, its job completed, obediently winked out behind her.
The girl was slender, with pale soft skin and long straw-blonde hair held
back in a ponytail. She wore a pair of very tight washed-out denims which
clung to her shapely thighs and butt, and a pink sequined top which showed
off a generous amount of cleavage. Completing her outfit were a pair of
heeled strappy sandals, a charm bracelet around one wrist and a tacky pink
watch around the other, a gold necklace dipping into her cleavage a bit and
a pair of stylish sunglasses perched on her head. Her blue eyes surveyed
the alleyway with some distaste, then as if remembering something she
snapped her fingers, and a white purse manifested from nowhere and slung
itself over her shoulder.
"What a dump!" she exclaimed, stepping forward and exiting the alleyway.
"Now where could it be?"
She looked around. The main street of gateway ran north and south, and
there were only a few pedestrians braving the heat right now. Peering
around with narrowed eyes, the girl spied the town square and large mall
complex through the heat haze to the south.
"That must be it!" she exlaimed happily. "Or as the natives here would say
it... Jackpot!" She started walking towards the mall with the heels of her
sandals clicking on the hot pavement of the sidewalk.
***
The girl attracted a few stares as she went, being unfamiliar and
attractive. It was much too hot for anyone to go out and bother her,
however, and she got to go her way without even someone flirting with her.
She passed several small establishments located in the low brick and mortar
buildings of main street before coming out into the town square. Situated
around it were a few more historic buildings, and the massive bunker-like
mall on the south side of the open space. A few trees and a central statue
of some almost forgotten town hero dominated the square, but the girl paid
them little heed as she kept going towards the mall. She navigated the
crossing deftly and soon she entered through the automatic doors into the
mall, where the temperature was comfortably cool.
"You, guard!" the girl called at the nearest mall cop, a somewhat pudgy
middle-aged man. He quirked an eyebrow and walked over towards her.
"Yes missy? What can I help you with?"
"I require directions to your ruler," she chirped happily, giving him a
broad smile. The guard looked even more confused.
"Ah wait. You're one of the new students at the college aren't ya?" he
chortled. "City kids have a weird sense of humor..."
Now it was the girl's turn to frown. "College? No such thing, dear man. I
simply wish to speak with the ruler of this burg. There are very important
things to discuss."
"I'm gonna guess you're not from around here," the guard replied, puzzled.
He studied the girl's features. "European? You sure ain't a local girl."
"Indeed not," she chirped back. "I could tell you where I'm from, but you'd
not know where it is anyway. But honestly, 'tis imperative that you take me
to the local lord posthaste. This over-wrought building is his domicile and
fortress, correct?"
The guard scratched his head. "Fortress? Oh wait, maybe you need city hall?
This is just the mall, there's no 'lords' here. You want to talk with the
people in charge, you want city hall. It's the building with the tall tower
with the pointy roof just across the square to your left." He extended a
hand, pointing out through the sliding doors of the mall.
The girl looked a little puzzled and rubbed her chin. "How cunning to not
reside in the most powerful and protected building... This lord must be a
master of misdirection." Realizing she was talking to herself, she looked
back up at the guard. "Thank you sirrah, your helpfulness will be
remembered!"
"I... uh. Thanks, I guess?" the now thoroughly confused mall cop responded.
As the girl turned to skip back out of the doors, he removed his hat and
scratched his short, spiky hair. "...man, those college kids just get
weirder and weirder every year."
The girl followed the directions outside, and quickly headed over to the
town hall. As promised, the building sported a tower with a pointed roof
and a large clock and the front door sported a roof styled like that of a
Greek temple, complete with colonnade. The girl walked up the short flight
of stairs up to the entrance, totally ignoring the sign proclaiming when
the building was open to the public, and walked inside. Once again the hot
air was exchanged for a carefully controlled and pleasant cool as she
stepped inside, and a thick carpet under her feet extended the length of
the hallway. The hallway sported well-crafted wood interiors, and several
wide stairways led up into the building. Right next to her was a reception
desk, and a pair of security guards eyed the girl sternly as she entered.
Ignorant of these stares, she swayed over to the front desk.
"Hello, I would like to speak with the ruler of this town. Tell him it is
urgent," she chirped.
The receptionist, an older woman with greying hair kept in a bun, a pair of
thin glasses and a very stern face, looked up at the girl with an
expression of extreme annoyance. "Can't you read, girl? Opening hours are
eleven to four, tuesday to friday, and it's already well past five. Also,
that doesn't include meeting the mayor. That's by appointment only."
The girl frowned. "I apologize for the inconvenience. The mayor, you say?
Ah, that makes sense, this town is too small for a duke or baron..." She
tapped her chin, seeming to have totally forgotten the receptionist for a
moment. "But look here, I could only align my travel here on this day and
time. These things are terribly finicky, you see. And it is rather
important I see your lord mayor today, as I have a very vital and very
profitable proposal for him."
The receptionist blinked, taken aback by the stream of eloquence coming
from the lips of what she considered such a young and skanky girl. "Young
lady, you're trying to tell me you're here to see the mayor and yet you
don't even know the mayor is a woman?"
"Oh is she? Most amazing!" the girl smiled. "I have only the utmost respect
for women who take on the yoke of rulership. Why I've known quite a few in
my day. However that doesn't change that I really must meet your mayor.
Now."
The receptionist pushed a button under her desk, and the two security
guards posted near the entrance approached. "That sounded like a threat.
Now please, do leave before this becomes a scene. The mayor is far too busy
to listen to some hussy off the street. In fact, I bet the opposition sent
you to try and get us into some sort of sexual scandal," the older woman
huffed.
The girl blinked at the receptionist, noting the approaching security
guards out of the corner of her eye. Then her face darkened. "Hussy? Sexual
scandal? You think me some simple prostitute, here to discredit your mayor?
You are rude, madam. Rude and coarse. I am quite serious about my
proposition, and I will not let petty bureaucracy get in my way. Now, I
will ask you once more, politely, to take me to the mayor. Otherwise I will
be forced to be rough."
The receptionist stared at the girl, now surrounded by the desk and the two
beefy guards. "Rough? Really?"
The girl just smiled. "Indeed."
***
Mayor Elaine Connelly was hard at work, or at least tried her best to be.
She'd opened the windows to let a slight breeze in (in spite of complaints
from security) and it was still steaming hot in her office. The fancy wood-
paneled walls and thick carpets made the office comfortable enough, but
there was also no real way around the fact that Elaine was mayor of a small
town where not much of anything happened. For all the fancy surroundings,
she was little more than a glorified clerk balancing checkbooks and trying
to address concerns from citizens which ranged from utterly ludicrous to
reasonable. And she was trying her best to do it well, with an election
year coming up. She looked out the window and again wondered if this career
was really worth it, if she wouldn't really be better off retiring and
moving somewhere else. Maybe become an artist. She'd always wanted that
when she was a child.
The mayor heard the door open behind her, and broke her train of thought to
turn from the open window to the door. But instead of her secretary or any
of the other staff members, an unfamiliar young woman stood in the doorway,
smiling. She looked like she was barely out of high school, and Elaine
found herself wondering how she'd gotten in here. In contrast to her
visitor, Elaine Connelly was in her fifties, a little plump and with a bob
of short brown hair. She had been quite the looker in her day, but now hid
under very conservative suits and behind a pair of glasses.
"Are you lost?" the mayor inquired.
"You are the lady mayor of this town?" the girl responded.
Elaine nodded, dumbfounded.
"Then I'm right where I want to be!" The girl smiled and entered the
office, closing the door behind her.
"You don't have an appointment" the mayor stated matter-of-factly. "How did
you get past security?"
The girl shrugged and walked around, studying the enormous oil painting of
Gateway's first mayor and the towering bookshelves. "A little bit of
persuasion. You see, madam, I have a very important proposition for you.
One that could make your little dustpit of a town into something really
big!"
Elaine leaned back, pressing the button to call security. "Oh? Do go on."
"You see, I come from far away. Very far away," the girl began, walking
over to sit down across the mayor, looking at her through inscrutable blue
eyes.
"You don't say. France? Holland?"
"Neither of those." The girl laughed. "Even further. In fact, not even
quite this world. You see, madam mayor, there are many worlds in creation,
some quite unlike this very mundane one you inhabit. I come from a world
which is quite... fantastical... by your standards."
Elaine nodded, wondering what was taking security. Normally guards were set
to respond within a minute of the silent alarm being pushed. She suddenly
felt a chill running down her spine, wondering what the 'persuasion' her
visitor had mentioned had entailed. Maybe this was it. Maybe this was a
terrorist attack. There could be a gun in that purse, or explosives. Or
something worse. Elaine leaned forward and slammed a pre-set button on the
phone on her large oak desk.
The girl quirked an eyebrow. "You have set off an alarm somewhere, I
assume?"
The mayor nodded. "Sheriff's office. They'll be here any minute."
The girl smiled. "Well, welcome them inside when they arrive. This is a
proposal that I feel would be more convincing if more people of authority
could witness it."
Elaine blinked, stupefied. "You want the police to come in?"
"Uh-huh. Of course. I realize that what I am going to say and show you may
be hard to swallow for people from your world, and that if I showed only
you people may assume I had somehow tricked you, or that you had lost your
faculties."
"What exactly is it you want?"
"I have a business proposition. A deal, if you will. An agreement that will
bring commerce to your town, riches beyond measure. And opportunities as
well."
The mayor had no clue what to think now, just slumping back in her chair.
"Go on then." She was resigned to the fact that if the girl wanted to, she
could kill her before the sheriff could get here.
"You see," the girl continued unperturbed, "the worlds of the multiverse
are kept apart by barriers which are ever so thin but so resilient that
only some rather extreme forces can penetrate them. Trying to do so with
clumsy tools or unskilled wielders can result in catastrophic damage. but
nonetheless, the barriers can be pierced. Once one has broken through and
properly gauged the reading of the new world, a permanent portal can be set
up to ferry people or good between the two worlds with no danger."
"Like on that Stargate show."
"Indeed! I learned so much of your culture from watching television feeds!
That's why I picked this form to appeal to your people. Now then, I am an
emissary of a kind from one of these worlds that's in a cosmological sense
just next doors to yours. I wish to set up a permanent portal through which
an exchange of goods and services can be performed, and I wish to sign a
contract with you, as ruler of your people, in order to do so."
Elaine tried to keep up with the confusing narrative, all the while
convinced that the girl was some sort of escaped mental patient, or that
there was a hidden camera somewhere and this was an elaborate prank. "So...
you're from some sort of alien world, and you want to set up a stargate
here so people can go back and forth?"
The girl nodded.
"Why?"
"Boredom, mostly. You see, lady mayor, in my world there are many like me
who are somewhat... bored. They have attained an immense amount of personal
power, and that means there are few challenges left except clandestine
plotting and political games. This is, frankly, a bit dull. For some time
I have catered to these people, offering them different games to distract
them from their positions and power, but few have worked very well. But
now, with my discovery of your world, I have a much better idea. Travelers
from my world will visit yours, and experience living her instead, where
they are unknown and have only whatever means they bring with them!"
"So you mean, kind of like a 'get away from it all' vacation?"
"Precisely, dear girl! You are sharp, I like it! And naturally, we will
offer the same service to people from your world who are tired of their
lives here! Why, permanent immigration may even become possible, who
knows?"
"But... if your world is, by your own words, 'fantastical' compared to
ours... Then why would any of your people want to come here? Wouldn't life
here, while different, still be utterly dull compared to where you come
from?" The mayor attempted to stall, knowing that the police would arrive
soon enough.
"Ah, another clever question." The girl stood up and paced around, her
blonde hair fluttering in the warm breeze from the window. "While life here
may seem dull to you, to many of my kind it will be enrapturing. You see,
due to certain innate differences in our worlds, some things are not
possible where I come from yet everyday here, and the reverse. One of my
customers may find a deep thrill in living the life of a clerk in one of
your trader stores, or scale your mountains, or work with these 'computers'
you like so much. The possibilities are endless!"
In the middle of the girl's latest narrative, Elaine had heard the sound of
cars pulling up outside, and soon she felt relief as she picked up the
sounds of people running up the stairs. Now if she could just avoid being
shot in the arrest... The girl turned around at the sounds.
"Ah, the other guests."
The door burst open and the town sheriff and two deputies rushed in, guns
ready and pointing at the girl. Elaine dived beneath her desk, cowering
there and hoping the police would not be triggerhappy. The sheriff, an
overweight man whose bushy hair and push-broom mustache had turned silver
by now, held his gun in trembling hands, his heart still racing after
running up the stairs. He hadn't pulled his sidearm in the line of duty in
15 years, and didn't feel very confident doing it now, especially with his
apparent opponent a teenage girl. Flanking him were a stout-looking younger
woman with short red hair and freckles, and a lean younger man with a spot-
clean uniform and slicked back chestnut hair.
"Drop the purse and get down!" he hollered, his deputies backing him up.
"NOW, MISSY!"
The girl merely smiled serenely. "Hello officers. You're just in time. Do
come in and sit down, there's no need for this. I am not a threat."
"NOW!" the sheriff yelled. The girl remained immobile. "Take her, Hawk," he
mumbled to one of his assistants.
The younger policeman advanced carefully on the young woman, weapon drawn.
His entire body was tense, ready for any kind of attack. Except the one
that actually game. All of a sudden his gun felt searing hot, like he'd
grabbed a red-hot poker. He screamed and dropped it, suddenly feeling his
knees buckle under him. Behind him the sheriff and the other deputy
experienced the same, both being slammed to the floor and having their
breath knocked out from them. The girl strayed over, and the three suddenly
noticed their guns floating up in the air to hover around the girl.
"That's very rude. No way to greet a traveler," the girl mused. The guns
hovered there lazily before they all floated up to land on the top of a
bookshelf. The girl snapped her finger and the door slamed shut again.
"Now, where were we? Lady mayor, you can come back out now. The commotion
is over."
Elaine slowly crawled back out, peering up over the edge of the desk. She
had heard no gunshots fired, but the outcome still surprised her. The three
police were scrambling to their feet, their guns nowhere in sight, with the
mysterious girl unharmed and not even out of breath.
"Now do you believe me?" she asked the assembled people.
"How in the hell did she do that?" the sheriff mumbled as his female deputy
helped him up.
"No clue. Should we rush her?"
The girl rolled her eyes, seemingly a bit annoyed now. "Can you people not
talk things through in a civil manner? Honestly?"
Elaine tried to recapture some of her dignity by climbing back into her
chair. "Wait. Hold on. Let's hear her out. If she wanted to harm us, I
imagine she would have."
"Finally a voice of reason!" the girl smiled.
"Who the hell IS she, mayor?" the sheriff gasped.
"She says she's an alien. And I'm starting to believe her."
"Let me tell you some more specifics of my idea, ladies and gentlemen" the
girl said. "Please, have a seat."
***
Elaine's head was spinning. Over the last hour since the strange girl had
burst into her office, the intruder had talked at length about her
seemingly impossible idea. The girl had shown the mayor, the sheriff and
the deputies extensive schematics of the proposed portal device, talked
about economic agreements and safeguards to protect both worlds, about
trade and tourism, science and magic. Now, however, Elaine raised her hand.
"Okay, that's... quite a lot to take in. But I have a question."
"Oh do go ahead!" the girl said, delighted.
"You said our worlds are quite different in style and with different
demographics. How would travelers integrate?"
"Ah yes, I'm glad you asked!" the girl nodded. "You see, I have developed
something that will allow travelers going either way to integrate fully and
painlessly. A means of disguise, you might say, but a very thorough one.
You could essentially become someone completely different for your journey,
and change back upon returning."
"How would that work, magic?" the female deputy inquired, still not
believing a word.
"Indeed!"
"Ridiculous" the male deputy sneered. "All you've shown us are parlor
tricks. I don't know what game you're playing, but you're not magical. Or
an alien."
"Fine," the girl sighed. "I guess I'll just have to give you a more
practical demonstration. Would you four like to accompany me back to my
dwelling? The journey is a bit disconcerting the first time, but quite
safe."
"Your world?" Elaine blinked.
"Like, through some sorta portal?" the sheriff scoffed.
"Indeed. You would be guests of honor!" the girl smiled."Oh, but first. You
have some questions about me, and I suppose the least I could do is
demonstrate what I have talked about. Consider yourself honored." The girl
stretched a bit, and reached up to remove her necklace and sunglasses.
"What's she..." the male deputy hissed, but was shushed by the sheriff.
The girl slid the bracelet and wristwatch off, and reached down to undo the
straps of her sandals, stepping onto the soft carpet barefoot. Then slowly,
she reached up to undo her top, letting it fall off and revealing an
equally pink bra. Her hands reached up slowly to her hips and began peeling
her jeans down after undoing the fly, slowly letting the pants trail down
her legs. The men in the room stared with bulging eyes, their pants
slightly strained as they felt themselves grow erect. Now standing before
them in only her pink thong and bra, the girl reached up to pull her hair
free, shaking it out. She reached up to unclasp her bra, letting it drop
off to reveal her pert breasts with nipples erect. As the sheriff looked
like he was about to have a heart attack, she reached down to her hips once
more, shimmying out of her panties and letting them pool around her feet.
Her slit was tight and shaven, and she posed there for a moment as the sun
played on her creamy pale skin.
"Wh-what is the m-meaning of...." Elaine started, but was then shocked
silent.
The girl reached up and around her neck, doing some fiddling back there out
of view from the four in the audience. As they gasped, she tore at her
neck, holding a stretch of skin in each slender hand. Pulling forward, the
mass of blonde hair fell forward, and the girl's pretty face crumpled and
emptied like it was a rubbermask. Pulling down, the smooth-skinned body
became an empty husk as well, until finally the figure let it drop to the
ground. Standing there was a grinning, bearded man with the empty skin of
the girl pooled around his feet. He was a little past his prime, with
silver streaks in his dark hair and beard, but he retained a high degree of
fitness. The female deputy almost screamed. Everyone else stared like their
eyes would pop out of their sockets any moment.
The sheriff finally broke the silence. "GOOD LORD ALMIGHTY!" he screamed.
The man bent down and retrieved the empty girl-skin pooled around his feet,
and shaking it out flopped it over the back of a chair. He then reached
over to retrieve the girl's purse, and impossibly pulled a well-decorated
set of clothes out of it. Soon he was fully dressed in a robe-like garment
with cloak, traveler's boots and an embroidered tunic.
"Now do you believe I can disguise a traveler? Now do you believe I have
magic?" The old man winked and smiled. The four onlookers just sat there
frozen, their faces pale. "I chose that girl's looks because I saw on your
television shows and movies you folks quite like that kind of girl. And she
seemed a nice choice for a first trip, looking all innocent and all," he
chuckled. "But now that we've gotten to know eachother better, we may as
well drop that charade. So that's the disguise bit. Everyone who wants to
travel between my world and yours I can provide with a disguise like that.
They can become anything they ever wanted to be. Man, woman, creature,
animal. Even inanimate object, though I wouldn't recommend it. Damn hard to
remove a disguise with no hands."
"But you... but she..." the female deputy stammered.
"Please dear girl. That was but a trifling example of my excellent
disguises. I could manufacture a suit that would turn me into a full-grown
dragon! Though of course with little of the accompanying power of such a
beast... " He trailed off, stroking his beard in the exact way his female
disguise had touched her chin. "Now then, that's the disguise. How about
the actual travel?"
Stepping back a bit, the man began mumbling words under his breath,
trailing faint lines of luminosity through their air. The hot afternoon air
began crackling, and Elaine felt the hairs on the back of her hands
prickle. As the chanting reached a pitch, the old man gestured forcefully,
and a rent through the fabric of reality appeared, just as it had when he
had arrived in the alleyway of Gateway over an hour ago.
"Ladies first?" he smiled. When nobody moved, he sighed. "Okay, look. I
really do not mean any of you any harm. I didn't harm your security guards
either. In fact they're just enjoying a very restful nap right now." Still
nobody moved. "Well, fine. I'll just go first. You have about five minutes
to decide if you want to come. If you do, I promise you're under my
protection. If not... well then I'll just have to find some other town to
make an offer of cooperation to." He shrugged, and began stepping through
the portal, casting a final glance behind him into the mayor's office.
The others stared at eachother for a moment. Then Elaine felt a deep sense
of adventure bubble up within her. She had just witnessed things clearly
beyond the explanation of science. She'd never expected any excitement in
her life, and now it was right here. If she let this opportunity slip, no
matter how dangerous it might turn out, she would never forgive herself.
"I'm going," she said, getting up and rushing straight into the portal.
"Ma'am!" the sheriff yelped, getting up as well. "Dammit!
"We gotta go after her, sheriff" the male deputy shouted. "She's our
responsibility now!"
"But..."
Before the sheriff could protest further, his two deputies were leading him
towards the portal. They all stared into its incandescent depths for a
moment before gingerly stepping through.
There was an intense sense of acceleration, a feeling of every hair on
their bodies standing on end, and then only darkness.
***
"There, that wasn't so bad now was it?" The voice trailed through the haze
of Elaine's mind as she tried to regain her bearings. Her vision swam for
what seemed like an eternity before she could finally discern the outline
of the old man from her office, his hand extended. "The first time is
always a bit of a bother. Eventually you'll be able to do it like strolling
through the park on a sunday." He pulled her to her feet, causing her to
wobble from the vertigo.
"Where..." she mumbled, seeing the three police scrambling to their feet as
well.
They were all located in a large, circular stone room held aloft by elegant
pillars. Each pillar was topped by a grinning demonic face carved straight
from the rock, and the floor was carefully tiled with large flat stones. In
the center of the room, behind them, was a large structure composed of
wrought metal which somewhat reminded Elaine of briar bushes, forming a
large oval gateway in the air. Unfamiliar runes and patterns covered the
floor, centering on the metal structure. The walls were lined with
workbenches and other spartan furniture. The air was quite cool compared to
the office they'd just left.
"This is my laboratory. Well, one of them," the old man mused, helping
Elaine steady herself. "That's the portal, of course. Not quite finished
yet, and not as big as it could be. But one cannot start without small
steps" He chuckled, and led the confused mayor towards the stairway leading
up to a heavy door. The Gateway police force trailed after them, whispering
and looking around like they were on a guided tour.
Swinging the door open, the old man led the mayor up the stairs, and the
sheriff and his deputies followed. They walked up a spiraling stone
staircase, past odd-looking paintings and the occasional window. As far as
the earth-people could glimpse, outside the windows was a forested
landscape rising up towards a set of distant mountains. Now and then they
passed closed wooden doors as they gradually ascended what must be a tall
tower. Finally the old man stopped at a ledge, and entered a small corridor
towards a much larger door. With a few mysterious words, the gateway opened
and he stepped through, motioning for his guests to follow.
"As the first denizens of earth ever, I welcome you to my humble abode. My
name is Danatavius, some call me the dread wizard, some call me the master
of Dale's Deep, but you're quite welcome to call me 'Dan'," The wizard made
a bit of a gesture.
"Elaine Connelly," the mayor responded as she entered the room.
"Sheriff Bill Norton. And these are my deputies Anne Kimball and Frank
Hawkins."
"Most people just call me Hawk," the male deputy shrugged.
Danatavius moved out of the way to show off a large study, filled with
bookshelves towering towards the distant domed ceiling, cupboards and desks
covered in arcane equipment. A very large desk with a huge chair stood at
the far end of the room, close to a pair of large windowed doors leading
out onto a small balcony.
"This is where a lot of the magic happens." Danatavius chuckled at his own
joke. "You're welcome to stay at my tower for as long or as short a time
you wish. During this time I will do my best to answer any questions you
might have. I hope that as people of authority, you will be able to
convince others of my sincerity." He eyed Elaine, who was poring over the
smallest details of the room, clearly impressed. "You -do- believe me now,
do you not? You're not still thinking this is all an elaborate hoax?"
Elaine shook her head quickly, and the others soon followed suit.
"Splendid!" the wizard clapped his hands and the door opened to reveal a
thin metallic construct, somewhat resembling a human. It carried a small
tray loaded with glasses and a crystal bottle filled with some viscous red
liquid. "A drink?" The earthlings quietly accepted a glass each, despite
that the they were all technically on duty.
"I have a question," the sheriff spoke up after a bit of an awkward silence
in which nobody dared say anything. Danatavius turned to him and nodded for
him to go on as the wizard sipped his liquor. "That... disguise thing. That
you were wearing and made you... ah..."
"Look and sound like a girl from your world?" Danatavius chuckled.
"Yeah that's it. You said you'd be offering those to anyone traveling back
and forth between the planets and..."
"And you're disappointed I haven't offered you fine folk any yet?"
Danatavius exclaimed.
"No! No no, that's not it at all..." the sheriff yelped. "It's just
that..."
"You are interested in how the disguises work and my plans for them?" the
wizard grinned.
"I am." Elaine raised her voice.
"As I said earlier, our two worlds are somewhat different. My world has a
plethora of intelligent and not-so-intelligent races. Your world has only
humankind. My world has what you call magic. Yours has technology. Some
aspects of our respective dimensional planes are actually incompatible with
the other. For this reason, I we'll be offering anyone who transfers
through the portal an appropriate disguise for the world they're in. If
say, an elf travels to your world, we'll set her up with a disguise of a
human. A human traveling her could become an elf, or a dwarf. Or anything.
It is also as a precaution to avoid drawing too much attention to our
partnership. I'm sure unsavory elements of both worlds would be interested
in such a power for... unpleasant reasons." He shrugged and sipped.
"So a kind of witness protection program?" Anne offered. "Complete
anonymity and the chance to try a new life for a bit?"
"Exactly that as well! What better way to visit a new world than through
the eyes of a native!"
"Is it dangerous?" sheriff Bill asked, clearly not impressed.
"No," the wizard replied. "It is not. I promise you, if I had any ulterior
motives with any of this, I would not have bothered with this whole
labyrinthine scheme. Arriving disguised as a slip of a girl, telling you
all these things..."
"Then what do you have to gain from it?" the mayor asked.
"Wealth. Resources to fund further studies of mine. A whole new world to
explore as I please. Maybe more. What -isn't- there for me to gain from
this?" he laughed. "But I see you're still not convinced. You still think
there's a shadowy ultimate goal for me here. Very well. You doubt my
honesty on the disguises? I shall loan all of you a set and let you explore
my world freely. There's nothing like seeing things with your own eyes,
no?" He stood up and placed his now-empty glass on a table.
"Hold on, we didn't agree to anything like..." the sheriff began.
"Oh come on!" Elaine snapped. "We have an amazing opportunity here! This is
something people have dreamed about forever, visiting an alien world! We're
explorers now! How can you just turn your back on this possibility?" The
sheriff shrugged, but both deputies seemed a bit more excited at the idea.
"No hidden catches, no tricks," Danatavius shrugged. "If you're not
interested... fine. I'll just send you back right now."
"We have a duty..." the sheriff began.
"Oh yes, you are law enforcers, are you not?" the wizard mused. "How about
this. I will set the three of you up with disguises of suitable law
enforcers of this world. That should make you much more comfortable."
"Are you scared, sheriff?" Elaine teased, grinning wryly.
"Afraid? Pfah," the older man grumbled. "Alright, we'll take yer offer,
mister high-and-mighty wizard. Nothing like showing this planet of yours
what some good old-fashioned policework means." His deputies nodded in
agreement. "No more than an hour of gallavanting around, though. We have a
station to get back to."
"It's settled then." Danatavius suddenly closed his eyes and stood very
still for a moment, as a thin creeping feeling prickled at the back of the
neck of each of the others. "I just called my assistant to deliver your
skins. Don't worry, each one will subliminally teach you whatever language
you need to speak to blend in with the appearance it gives, as well as
certain other basic skills. No fancy stuff though, I'm afraid. You can't
just put on a disguise and become a fully-fledged wizard or scientist."
"Shame," Elaine mumbled, admiring the view out the window.
"A bit more curious than your fellows, I've noticed." The wizard smiled as
they waited.
The mayor merely shrugged. "I guess being a politician in the kind of town
Gateway is would drive anyone to boredom."
Shortly there was a knock on the door, and as the wizard gestured for it to
open, a slender young woman with gently tapering ears, dressed in a similar
but less ornate sorcerer's outfit entered, carrying a set of large bundles
under her arm. She bowed quietly to everyone, and then went over to lay the
bundles on one of the large tables before moving back to stand silently by
the wall.
"My apprentice, Kylandra," Danatavius explained. "She's very bashful around
humans, comes from a very isolated elf tribe."
The earthlings found themselves staring in wonder at the first truly alien
being they had seen so far, before the deputy Anne walked over to the table
to pick up and examine one of the bundles. She picked out a tan-colored
folded-up pile topped with a mop of black hair and unfolded it, letting it
fall to the floor. She blushed as she stared down at the unblemished empty
skin of what seemed to be an elf female, with breasts like empty bags
sagging from the chest, a slit between the legs and similar pointed ears to
the assistant Kylandra. Also in the bundle was a set of clothing presumably
made to match the skin.
"Elven rangers of Gnarlwood. They patrol this land far and wide, acting to
aid travelers from monsters, highwaymen and other dangers. They are very
respected and very trusted among all good folk," Danatavius explained as
the sheriff and Mark approached the table as well to study the 'gifts'
closer.
"Now wait just a goldarn minute!" sheriff Bill shouted, holding out a
second skin from the bundles. "This here one's a girl too! What are you
trying to pull?"
"This one too, sheriff," Mark proclaimed, holding up the last one.
Danatavius looked a little confused. "The rangers of Gnarlwood are all
women. It is part of their tradition."
"Well we're not!" the sheriff growled. "...well 'cept Anne," he added
sheepishly after a vicious stare from his other deputy.
"So?" the wizard responded, confused.
"So why are you offering us some kinda... some kinda... girl-skins of some
female faeries or somesuch? We're men!" The sheriff still seemed indignant.
"What does it matter? My dear ... sheriff is it? Can I call you Bill? It
does not matter what gender, sex or species you are. Once you wear one of
these disguises it will change you to fit, turning you into whatever it
portrays. You saw my disguise when I arrived at your town. It was fully
female, down to every detail, and no examination could have proven
otherwise."
"It ain't natural. I ain't no ladyboy," the sheriff growled.
"Nor has anyone suggested so!" Danatavius exclaimed, gesturing
apprehensively. "You're a man, the disguise is a woman. Nobody will be able
to tell, nor will anyone know except those in this room right now. You're
going to visit a fully alien world, with new rules, new creatures, new
places... Wouldn't it be exciting to do so as someone totally new? Besides,
the suit will make you younger, fitter, stronger..." He walked over to lean
in to the three police. "And frankly, between us... wearing a young lass
like that... is quite a rush. If you know what I mean?" He winked and
walked away.
"It looks kinda fun, Bill" Anne finally offered. "Come on, let's try it.
Think about it, we'll be like we're playing a computer game together. Not
that you ever played a computer game in your life."
"I..." Bill muttered, his resolve weakening.
"Let's just try it," Mark shrugged. "If we don't like it, we'll just change
back, okay?"
Finally, the sheriff nodded quietly. "Alright, but I ain't getting changed
in front of everyone..."
"Ah, of course. Kylandra, show these three to the changing room." The
silent elf nodded, opening the door and gesturing for the three to follow
her, while Elaine remained. The wizard noted she was giggling. "What?" he
inquired.
"Oh nothing. Just that I'm pretty amused by the idea of them all as elves."
"They'll like it, lady mayor," Danatavius grinned. "I guarantee it!"
***
Kylandra closed the door behind her, leaving the sheriff and his deputies
in a small, windowless and very comfortable room. There was a number of
screens, drawers and racks with cloth hangers inside, giving the impression
of a changing room at a fancy tailor's store. The elf apprentice had
deposited the elf bundles on a small table, and then left the three to
their own devices, respecting their privacy. Bill was still fuming and
grumbling a bit. In all his years in the comfortable job as town sheriff of
Gateway had he ever expected to be in this situation, but he had to admit
to himself the mage's offer had interested him. Sheriff Norton was aging,
and nowhere near the fit, athletic man he had been when he started out as a
deputy many years back. The idea of recapturing some of that... even if it
meant turning into a woman... was very alluring.
Anne looked at him quietly. "Come on Bill. If what this wizard guy says is
right, it'll be fun. You always grouse at not being able to keep up with me
and Hawk."
"Yeah well, I never had any thought about... this." Bill lifted a skin and
demonstratively wiggled the empty breast of it at his deputy.
Anne laughed. "Come on. Let's try it. Worst that can happen is it doesn't
work and we all look like fools. Which one do you want? I figure since
you're the senior you get first pick."
"Who you calling a senior, missy?" Bill chuckled, his mood a bit brighter.
He blushed intensely as he browsed the naked surfaces of the skins. While
they weren't real female skins (at least right now) it was still a little
arousing, and a bit embarrasing. Finally, he picked out the bundle with a
black-haired skin, shrugged and turned to walk behind a screen without a
word. Looking at him go, his deputies divided the remaining piles, with
Anne grabbing the redheaded suit and Hawk taking the blonde.
Behind the screen, Bill unfolded the skin carefully and slumped it over a
chair. He noticed each suit didn't have much clothing to go with it, but
dismissed that worry since the upcoming ordeal far dwarfed it. With some
effort he unbuckled his belt, and began undressing. Just the act was
working his blood pressure up again, and admittedly the situation was a
little more arousing than he wanted to admit as well. His gnarled feet dug
into the thick, soft rug with a pattern of mighty ships sailing an
unfamiliar ocean, surrounded by sea serpents. Soon the sheriff was naked,
having peeled his boxers off to reveal a beginning erection. Grumbling, he
picked the elf-disguise up and regarded it again. Turning it over he found
a wide slit reaching from the hairline at the neck down to the buttocks.
Reaching inside the disguise was warm and a little moist and slick to the
touch. Quietly he prayed the mage didn't make these out of real people.
With some effort and balancing himself, Bill opened the skin up and rammed
one leg down that of the suit. His leg seemed shorter than the costume's,
and it was flopping on the ground like an empty sock. The sheriff thought
that this would never work, and it was likely just a setup by his
colleagues to make him look like a fool. But he'd gone this far, there was
no point turning back. With a heave he managed to put his other leg down
that of the suit, and found the fabric clinging pleasantly to his skin. It
was almost like a massage, which made his member harder. Grunting, he
pulled the suit up over his stiffy, and then began with great effort to
stretch the suit out enough to accomodate his belly. He was overweight, and
he was well aware of it, and now he thought he'd rip the suit like a sheet
trying to get into it. But impossibly, somehow the costume just stretched
wider and wider, and soon his entire torso was inside.
Grunting with more effort, he tugged the long sleeves over his own arms,
bunching the fabric up like a rumpled glove to get his stubby hands into
the slender ones of the elf-skin. Stretching and pulling, he widened the
gap of the head of the suit and pulled it up against his own, despite the
disguise having a slender neck and he having a double chin and much bulkier
head. Somehow this too worked, although the sheriff now felt constrained
and out of breath. It was like being in a straitjacket, and it took a lot
of mental effort for him not to just tear back out of the skin. Instead he
slowly, carefully began trailing the pull of the suit from his ass up his
back. As he did, he could feel the suit closing seamlessly behind it,
leaving only a smooth surface. He reluctantly admitted that maybe the
wizard was telling the truth. Holding the long hair of the costume out of
the way, his other hand tugged the pull upwards, straining to close it
those last few inches up to the skull. He thought of how freakish he must
look, and what a complete idiot he had been to go along with this.
Then the pull closed and vertigo overtook him.
He fell to his knees, expecting to shatter something in the process, and
held his guts as vertigo assailed him. He felt like his entire body was
melting and stretching, like he was both hot and cold. It was arousing, and
he felt himself clawing at his crotch, feeling to his horror how the
prominent bulge there shrank under his fingers. He grabbed his head as he
felt the mask of the suit constrict around it, and then when the process
finished as quickly and quietly as it had begun, fell down on all fours,
panting heavily.
"Sheriff? Bill?" he heard a melodic, kind voice through the haze. "You
alright? Come on, we have to check on him."
The changing screen was pushed aside, and two elegant, tall women that were
at first totally unfamiliar to the sheriff strode into view. One was a
lovely blonde with a kind, open face and large bosom, and the other was a
more slender, deadly-looking redhead. Both had the delicately tapered ears
that Kylandra had displayed, and both were fully naked. Smooth but strong
hands grabbed the sheriff and pulled him up into a chair, and the two elves
sat down opposed to him with concerned expressions.
"Everything alright in their Bill?" the blonde smiled, stroking the
sheriff's cheek.
Bill looked down, and it took him some time to process that the large, soft
bosom he saw heaving was his own. His hands darted there, grabbing the soft
mounds and massaging them, which provoked a wave of pleasure making him coo
softly. Shaking long, midnight black hair from his face, Bill realized that
what the mage had said was true. He was a girl. Not just any girl either,
an elf girl straight out of one of those fantasy movies. He... she she
corrected herself, let her slender hands probe between her legs, finding a
soft mound with a slightly moist slit there instead of the normal
equipment. As the vertigo vanished she felt strength flood through her
limbs, vitality she hadn't experienced in decades.
"It worked!" she gasped in a breathy, feminine voice. "It really worked!"
The three elf girls jumped to their feet and embraced, laughing.
***
While the three law enforcers had been gone, mayor Connelly and Danatavius
had discussed their business proposal further. Elaine was convinced of the
mage's words now, and though she still had some concerns about the
executions of the plan, she was convinced it was a good idea. She trusted
the wizard, to an extent, and she knew that if this worked it would place
her name in the history books. She also felt quietly attracted to the
dangerous, adventuresome life that this world offered, according to the
wizard. She wondered what it would be like traveling out there with only
her wits and strength to rely on, to defeat monsters and maybe even learn
magic herself. Her musings were interrupted by a soft knock on the door.
"Enter," Danatavius called.
"The guests are ready, master," Kylandra said, the first words Elaine had
heard the elf girl utter. She pulled to the side to admit three other
figures who strode into the room.
Elaine gasped. Three elven women, each with a nicely tanned skin indicating
a life spent outdoors, entered the study with confident smiles. One had
raven hair, one blonde and one red, and they all kept it out of their faces
with headbands and tiaras. They were all among the most beautiful women
Elaine had ever seen, with a natural beauty quite unlike that seen in
movies. Their pointed ears and slender eyes spoke of their elven heritage,
while their mannerisms were elegant and spoke of a deadly strength. Each
girl was dressed in a similar and very minimal outfit, consisting of a
leather two-piece bikini-like garment keeping them decent, a pair of long
leather bracers protecting their forearms and a pair of knee-length leather
greaves protecting their lower legs. Their jewelry and outfits were all
richly decorated with tree and leaf motifs, and each carried at least one
slender sword at their hip and a bow on their back.
"Ah, dear girls!" Danatavius cheered. "I trust it there were no problems?"
"None at all" the dark-haired elf smiled. "This feels... amazing. We can
speak elven fluently, and other languages besides. And we seem to be able
to fight with sword and blade as well..."
"I'm not even embarrased at the thought of going outside like this!" the
blonde added.
"Very good, because I think it would be almost criminal to shut such a
lovely trio in this dreary tower! Did Kylandra offer you some maps,
supplies and mounts?"
"She did," the redhead elf giggled. "I can't wait to try riding, I haven't
done it since I was a little girl!"
"Then waste no time!" Danatavius chuckled. "You have an hour to experience
this world as three denizens of it, make the most of it! And try to enjoy
yourselves as much as you can, will you?"
"Don't worry," the raven-haired elf grinned.
"We will," the blonde added.
"See you later, ma'am." The redhead saluted to Elaine, who saluted back
with a laugh. Then Kylandra led the three newly minted elven rangers out,
and closed the door behind them.
"Will they be alright?" she mused to the wizard once they'd left.
"Oh yes. I wasn't joking about keeping an eye on them while you're all
here. Kylandra will trail them invisibly and keep them out of trouble, but
their newfound combat skills will likely be enough. Safer than had they
gone out there in their original forms with the weapons from your world,
anyway. The magic field on this world makes firearms almost useless."
"You thought of everything huh?" Elaine grinned, walking over next to the
wizard. "But you forgot something..."
"Hmmm? What's that, lady mayor?"
"Me. I want a disguise as well." Elaine winked at him.
Danatavius seemed genuinely surprised. "You don't need one in my tower,
really. Or did you wish to journey outside as well?"
The mayor shrugged, turning to study a wax-coated skull sitting on a
writing desk. "Maybe. Or maybe I just want to try that? Ever since I saw
you.... undress... I've been fantasizing on what it's like. It seems
exciting. Maybe it's just because I can't lose these extra pounds after
going to the gym for years..." She laughed a little, nervously.
"You're not unattractive in the slightest, my dear." Danatavius smiled, and
somehow the mayor knew he was sincered.
"Thank you," she blushed. "But I still want to try it... I find it very...
arousing."
Danatavius nodded and smiled. "Of course. Your inner beauty will radiate
through whatever form you wear, my dear. Come then, to the laboratory!"
***
Danatavius' tower seemed to have a much larger number of rooms and levels
than expected. Furthermore, Elaine discovered when guided through the
labyrinth of stairwells, corridors and rooms that there was a small keep
attached to the tower as well. Presently she was carefully looking through
a large amount of soft, lifelike skins inside another vaulted chamber. This
one was filled with vats filled with strong-smelling liquids, odd circular
systems replenishing the fluid, and rows and racks containing the perfect
disguises which Danatavius manufactured. He had repeatedly assured her that
the process was purely alchemical, and used no tissue taken from living
beings, but picking through the skins was still a weird and somewhat
unsettling experience. Afternoon was turning into evening (at least by her
count) as the mayor's fingers brushed against a disguise which instantly
caught her glimpse.
"What's this one?" she said, holding it up.
"Hmm? Oh that" Danatavius said, standing up from the rickety chair he'd
been sitting in, doodling in a thick notebook. He examined the skin closer.
"Hmm, this was one I modeled after a lass from one of the border towns.
Quite fetching, if I say so myself."
"Mind if I try her on?" Elaine was already slipping out of her flat-heeled
shoes.
"Be my guest!" Danatavius grinned and sat down again. "Do you wish for
privacy? I can leave..."
Elaine gave him a wicked grin. "No no. I want you to watch. I got to see
your undressing after all." The wizard felt something stirring deep within
him. He realized he liked this woman, quite a bit.
Elaine winked to him as he sat down, and deposited her wristwatch on the
table with a flat 'clink' sound. She reached down to tug her socks off,
then opened her suit jacket and began unbuttoning her shirt. Dropping both
jacket and shirt on a chair, she slowly pulled her skirt down and let it
follow the previous garments, before turning around from him to slip out of
her underwear. Danatavius felt something stirring inside him he hadn't
experienced in a long time, a loneliness he didn't realize had been there.
The mayor picked the skin off the table, and shook it a little to
straighten it out. She turned back towards him with the skin in front of
her, and slowly tugged the seam open with her index finger. As he watched,
she slowly slipped into the skin one foot after the other, trailing the
much larger suit up over her own short, stocky body. The breasts hung like
empty sacks over her natural ones, and she had some trouble with the
massive mane of hair attached to the scalp of the skin. Tugging the arms
and hands of the suit on, she playfully teased the sitting mage by playing
with the empty breasts of the skin, before plunging her face into that of
the suit and rapidly, almost clumsily beginning to tug the seam closed. She
breathed heavily, totally excited over the prospect of experiencing the
change. As the seam closed, she felt her body stretching, expanding and
contracting at once. She let out an almost orgiastic scream of ecstasy as
the suit became her own skin, the breasts inflating, she skin becoming soft
and warm, the legs and arms growing longer.
Danatavius jumped to his feet and rushed over to steady the changed woman,
should she need it. As he did, she straightened up and gave him his first
look of her disguised form, and he felt blood rush to his loins. She was
tall, as tall as he was, with the figure of a pole-dancer or courtesan. Her
bosom was large and soft, yet fully natural, and her dark nipples were
stiff in the cool air. Her skin was fair, and while it didn't look
unhealthy it did have a very flawless look to it. His hand brushed her
shoulder and he felt her skin ripple under his touch. She raised her head
to face him, showing a face that was very beautiful, with full, blood-red
lips and a slender nose, thick eyelashes and elegant cheekbones. She looked
aristocratic and sensual at once, with a long slender red tattoo line
running from her forehead down over one eye and tapering off at her cheek.
Her hair was like a mane of thick, glossy dark hair, rustling as she moved.
"Do you like it?" she whispered, not in the mayor's cool, controlled voice,
but in a husky accented voice that Danatavius recognzied from his own
world.
He grinned and leaned in, letting her nipples brush against his embroidered
tunic. "I like it... very much. You?"
She leaned in to kiss him full on the mouth. "This is what I always wanted
to be. Dark. Sexy. Dangerous."
He returned the kiss, breathless, embracing her and feeling her naked body
against his as she began tearing at her clothes.
"I want you... to teach me. I want to be more than I was. I want to become
a mage like you," she cooed.
"I can do that. But what about your job in your own world?" the mage
grunted as his chest was bared, before plunging in to kiss her again.
"It can wait. I always wanted a life of adventure," she moaned, finally
tugging the wizard's robe down to reveal his stiff erection.
"Then let it wait" the wizard smiled, pulling his partner up onto one of
the lab tables, sending equipment scattering all over the floor. He pulled
her closer, and found her almost animalistic passion was contagious.
"Take me," she moaned. And he obliged.
Epilogue:
Kylandra felt the soft warmth as she began to try and telepathically
contact her master to give him the news. She realized that Danatavius was
engaged in very private matters, and blushed a bit as she had never known
him to do so before. She'd had a brief subliminal flash of a female face
lost in the throes of orgasm, and had her suspicions on what had happened
between the two in the tower. Shrugging, the elf apprentice stood up from
her position near a tree and began walking off.
Below her, on the soft grass of a forest meadow a good journey from the
wizard's tower, three elven beauties writhed in passion under the attention
of three handsome elf men. Kylandra smiled to herself as she invisibly
walked past the fornicating couples, being very careful to not create any
noises or other signs of her presence. It had been well over two hours now
since she had set out trailing the three disguised earthlings, and at the
pace they were going it didn't seem like they were done anytime soon.
As if to confirm her thought, the raven-haired elf girl and her partner
closest to Kylandra screamed in unified ecstasy as he once again pumped his
thick, steaming seed into her. As she passed the blonde and redheaded elf
girls, she knew they still had the stamina to keep going for a long time as
well. Each girl was entirely nude, her hair unbound and messy, and each had
their pearly skin covered in a film of shiny sweat after the multiple
orgasms. Kylandra shrugged and left the glade. She would wait to make sure
the three visiting earthlings were alright before guiding them back to the
tower, but she had grown a bit bored of watching their sexual exploits. She
assumed this might have been the natural outcome of placing three earth-
humans in such beautiful shells, although she did not know.
As she sat down by the river to wait, she at least conceded that the
earthlings were likely enjoying their stay in this world. As if to confirm
the notion, another set of howls arose from the glade behind her, rising
into the evening sky.
End.
