Chapter 2 - Therapy
I had many feelings of doubt about what I had said prior to my results
meeting, I was a little scared to know what the truth was and some of Dr
Croft's questions had me worried and I was not sure if the result would
seal my fate in a direction that I was ready for, or even send me off on
a path I wanted to take. So it was that I sat down in front of Tina and
Dr Shaw, both women tried to put me at ease but I was quietly shaking
inside as Tina opened the folder in front of her and started to talk.
Larry the results of the tests have identified you as being gender
transient - it defines you as the type of person who is happy to live in
an in between world, living much of the time as women, but equally
sometimes as men. You happily change role at will, selecting that which
seems appropriate for the occasion. The transient may well perceive
him/herself as a third gender, refusing to acknowledge the normally
accepted male/female divide. And this is what we believe you are.
Let me explain how you differ from other types, firstly a transvestite is
well aware that he is male, but who simply owns up to my occasional need
to dress up in clothes of the other sex without any other feelings or
needs regarding my chosen alternate.
As far as the Transsexual is concerned, she cannot wait to leave the
zone between the world of being neither one nor the other. The whole idea
of continuing in this state is horrific for her and she is impatient to
achieve her sought after harmony between mind and body.
Now rest assured that your desire to cross dress or live as the opposite
gender will not lead in the direction of hormones, transition, or
surgery. However there is no magic pill only support and guidance, and
this is what I would like to recommend for you, a weekly one hour session
with me to help you develop a process whereby you can appreciate your
current dilemmas and prepare you for a long term stable life style with
realistic chances in relationships, work, and gender identity expression.
Transgenderists are people who choose to live full time in the gender
role opposed to their physical sex. They retain their original genitalia,
frequently have electrolysis to facilitate their passing properly in
their chosen role and may have speech therapy too. A few add hormone
treatment but with no intention of seeking gender reassignment because
just like you have you've mentally acknowledged you can never be a true
woman.
Then it was Dr Shaw's turn. "You have had a pretty stressful time haven't
you," she said. "And it shows in your test results, firstly let me put
you at ease, there are no major problems that we can't solve together."
"I can help you on your road to recovery, but as I am sure you are aware
your mental health has affected your physical health and we need to sort
that out."
"The stress you have been under has affected your physical health, and
this has in turn lead to moderately high blood pressure, and you are
overweight, not by much but we need to do something about it otherwise it
may lead to more serious things."
"So here is what we need to do, step one - I have discussed this with
Tina and we want you to visit a hypnotherapist, once a week will be fine,
this is required as part of your condition management program, we need to
get your stress levels down which in turn will bring down your blood
pressure."
"We would like to recommend Dr Jane Walker as your therapist, she's local
and we have referred several other clients to her with excellent
results."
"Step two - Diet, combined with weight loss supplements and a few extra
mineral supplements in tablet form will help you feel much healthier."
"Finally step three - exercise, we have a very good exercise program here
and it will allow me to watch and record your weight loss as part of a
balanced program and this in turn with the other two steps will have you
on the road to recovery within a very few months."
I heaved a sigh of relief and basically agreed with everything Dr Shaw
had said, whilst deep down I was aware that stress must have manifested
itself in some problem somewhere, I was just lucky it was just in weight
area. To be honest though I wasn't massively overweight by any means but
if Dr Shaw promised she would have me down to my correct weight in a few
months I was OK with that. Also if the hypnotherapist could help then
that was part of the cure too, even though I had some concern about what
that would costs me.
The following week I attended my first session with the hypnotherapist -
Dr Jane, we started off by trying to get to know each other, and form a
common ground, we discussed music- what made me happy, what made me sad,
what made me relaxed. Once this common ground was cemented, she said it
would form a basis on how she would proceed at future visits, which would
be more therapeutic in nature, and she would be able to use music as
background triggers to steer my mind whilst in therapy. She then went on
to explain that psychotherapy was a long-term process and I should not
expect any instant solutions to my problems. Therapy is about equipping
you with life-long solutions rather than a quick fix, she said. Then she
asked me about what brought me to her for therapy, can I explained to her
about the Society's recommendation and the path they had mapped out to
help me, she listened and took notes as I talked. The question and answer
session continued for what seemed a very long hour and thirty minutes.
"What do you feel is wrong in your life, What kind of symptoms was I
experiencing." My life history - which covered such things as my
childhood, education, relationships (family, romantic, friends), my
current living situation and my career.
Final we stopped talking about me, and she turned to the task at hand, my
treatment. She discussed the length of my treatment, which was to be in
the form of one; ninety minute session each week (Wednesday's @ 3:30pm),
and the methods she would employed, and finally she discussed my patient
confidentiality, and covered what I would need to tell my employer,
regarding my weekly treatment and absents from the workplace.
Then it was time for my first short 'induction' therapy she explained
that she was going to implant certain 'trigger phrases' in my
subconscious that would help her and allow me to be returned to the
induction (trance) state - quickly and easily. She promised that they
would not be harmful in anyway. They would simply break down the
subconscious barriers that prevented me from embracing this simplistic
form of therapy. I was now committed to the therapy, and was secretly
keen to begin. I was now at the point of no return, as I settled down in
the reclining chair with feet raised of the ground. She began...
Coming around minutes later, I felt really good, even though I didn't
know why, I just did.
From then on my weekly meeting with Dr Jane got more comfortable and the
routine became the norm - first we would have a chat about how I was
feeling then I would discuss what was happening at the society and about
my progress, and finally she would put me under. I have to say that I
certainly felt much calmer as a result of these weekly meetings and most
of the time I had no recollection of what we had discussed on any of
those occasions.
Six months later at one of our meeting she assured me my mind had been
thoroughly 'conditioned' and was completely free from tension and that I
was now much more receptive to my feelings. Dr Jane gave me some more
audio discs - that were aids to help me relax with at night should I need
to, and said she had sent a progress report to Tina.
I put the disc on and got into bed. The discs all started with her
introducing the disc and its index number, then there would be a pause
and soft music would start to play - it was always the same - The Oberon
Overture, by Carl Weber, then thirty seconds or so latter she would begin
narrating the training portion of this session, I always had good
intensions of listening to the session in full, but as she talked and the
music played I would just drift off to sleep. Every morning when I work,
I felt really good, I didn't know why, and try as I might, I could never
remember what I had listened to the night before, but just couldn't
remember anything about it. But I felt great and my morning routine was
working. I would wake, go to the bathroom, take my mineral pills, then
come back into my bedroom, put on my jogging gear and then go for a
thirty minuet run. Whatever was making me feel like this - it worked and
I felt great.
