Her presence and that of her child will draw every Loki to her like a magnet." Even as he spoke, Falcon was leaving his protective station. "We'll standoff in the Asteroid fields. I want everyone ready the second they drop out. As soon as the ships were a safe distance from port they winked out one by one. Their pounce units jumping them to the other side of the universe. They slowly maneuvered into position to wait. "Any word from Sand?" asked Churl. "I'm sorry they opened the Phase portal through the Black Hole. I cannot reach them until they are out of its interference." "I've got a shimmer," called Tia from her position at the head of Falcons attack fighters. "That's not them, it's too small." Replied Unicorn even as three more Portals opened. Suddenly a dozen of the Loki fighters emerged even as a huge Phase Portal opened in the center. Within moments the two bio ships emerged, the little one in the lead as the bigger one darted side to side. Her rear shields deflecting the fire from pursuing Loki. Even as the portal began to shrink hundreds of the evil craft poured out hungry for the kill. "Run Keel, don't stop. Run and call Unicorn for help," Sand told him as she began breaking to turn and make a stand unaware of those that had emerged ahead of them. In giving birth, Sand had stripped herself of all but defensive shields. Her fighting weapons had been converted, absorbed into herself to create Keel. What she had regenerated over the last decade had already been depleted in reaching Circes. More of her energy had been used to open the Phase Portal in a short run ahead of them, and close it as fast as possible behind them. But still the Loki had managed to stay with them, even predict where they would drop out at. Keel being Juvenile had no weapons as of yet. When he reached his Adulthood in another five years he would learn to generate his own. Sand's defense shields were beginning to fail as the four Kaidran war ships jumped into the fray flanking her. The forward Calliope's spitting out a thousand bursts a second, much faster than the Loki could dodge. The rage of battle sounded all around her. "Go, run," urged one of the Kaidran's. Sand began turning, searching for her son. There ahead, a bunch of single fighters were engaged against the Loki "Momma," she heard Keel scream. One had gotten past his defense shields and was powering in for the kill. A lone fighter peeled off from the battle full thrusters burning as the guns on full automatic hammered at the Loki ship. Suddenly the guns on the fighter went dead, yet still it powered in pursuit. "Get off him, get off him Damnit," the Loki never faltered. Even as Keel began turning to put his forward shields between him and his attacker. "I said get off him you evil bastard," yelled Tia a split second before her fighter collided with the Loki. The resulting explosion, a brief instantaneous fireball quickly snuffed out in the vacuum of space. The tears ran slowly down Churl's face, following the sorrow lines of his fur as Falcon ones light changed from flashing Yellow to solid Red. Still the battle raged as the Kaidran defeated and turned back the Loki, following to the very edges of the Phase Portals they opened for their own escape. "All ships, status report. There was one extension near the front where the bridge would be and I was surprised to find Unicorn maneuvering to it instead of one of the others. I have Falcon now and forever." "I hear Love," I heard a voice that sounded like the computer on Falcon "Uni, what will happen to the ships?" I asked. "Father Hub will bring their intelligence to the same level as ours. Then he will give them the living outer hulls. As they grow and evolve that outer skin will extend inwards to every part of the ship. Eventually they too will be able to create more like themselves." After a few minutes she said, "Perhaps you should have Falcon's crew wait on Father Hub once the outer skin is complete." "Why?" "We two will be expected to perform the dance of bonding. It involves a stalking of jumps and then matching jumps. Always within the same universe of course." Falcon's intelligence levels were already near that of Unicorn's, so I wondered how long it would be for the ship to grow the living outer hull. As if reading her thoughts Unicorn spoke up. "It will take each ship a different length of time, depending on how much and how long they stay connected to Father Hub. His hull is extending to them and will continue to grow even after they separate." "My hull is nearly complete," reported Falcon. "Father must really love you Unicorn to speed my own awakening like he has." It had only been two days since the ships had docked with the oldest Bio-Ship. I had sat and watched as other Bio-Ships had linked with Equinox, their hulls making contact at other external Airlocks. "My Sisters and brothers are helping Father so that he does not have to give so much of himself," Unicorn explained. Now I realized why she had insisted on physical contact with Falcon for brief stretches of time while they were outside before the rest of her family had arrived. Each time at a different location, transferring a portion of her living hull to him. Why Equinox's decking had felt softer, more like Uni's after she'd begun docking inside the hold. "I don't quite understand," confessed Churl. "Our ships have docked with each other before, and the living hull didn't seem to try transferring either of those times." With a giggle I said, "That was before she made her decision. I bet the Silent Night doesn't show any signs either." "No she doesn't, and Unicorn spent a lot more time docked with her than any other ship. Well except for Equinox, the other one." "Churl, where did the other Equinox come from?" I finally asked. "I know the history of all the other ships of your family and Callie's, but the Equinox just suddenly shows up four years ago." "We found her adrift. No crew, nothing. The Admiral was with the original boarding party that transported across to investigate." He looked at me kind of funny. "Like your Equinox, she just seemed to appear out of the Black Hole." "Four years ago?" I asked. "Yeah, four years ago. Allie was a year old when the Silent Night found her drifting. That's why everyone was so excited about finding your mothers ship." I'd just gotten another clue I didn't have before. "Unicorn, do you know where the other Equinox came from?" I asked. But it was Hub's voice that came over the speakers. "That was a Shadow Ship. Created by the inexperienced former first Queen when she opened a second portal before the first was closed. Fortunately only the non-living ship was duplicated. Now I understood yet another connection between the two species as Unicorn showed me a picture of a Space Mite close up, then a picture of the group which I had actually mistaken for a part of Unicorns outer hull pattern. As I watched a hoard of tiny spiders began feeding on them. "I am projecting a protective shield so the young can feed outside my hull," Uni told me. "They are already cleaning Falcon. And those of the Kaidran colony are busy with Noxi." I realized that this new alliance had more than one mutual convenience for both Spiders and Ships. Then I thought of the older non-Bio-Ships, their outer hulls deteriorated beyond repair. "Yes that is the work of the Mites. They eat away at the ships themselves," Uni told me. The mites attached themselves to the tiny meteorites floating through space. And when impacting with a ships shields they transferred to the ships. The very tiny Phase Spider young lived and thrived on those Mites. In return the Bio-Ships protected the young until they could fend for themselves. The phase spider young didn't need to open any hatches to go outside. They just phased through once a shield was created for them. "Uni, do you know where it is we need to jump to first to return Noxi's passengers?" "Yes Calista, and I am teaching both She and Falcon to open a portal of their own." I felt something through our bond. "Uni, What is it?" I asked. "I am worried about Falcon, his Crew are anxious to go against the Loki," she said. "Churl will make sure they do not take any chances," I assured her. She had begun to feel maternal toward the Falcon's crew. As I sat trying to learn everything I could about the other Bio-Ships, I began seeing other unexplained information. I read an entry that described some sort of Phase Portal control devices. Something referred to as Transit Cylinders, and On Ramps. The cylinders would detect a craft capable of transiting through the portal onto a sort of roadway. Then be deposited on another planet through yet another portal. It described forks and intersections where a traveler could make a choice of which way to go. "Uni, what's the Galactic Freeway?" I finally asked. "Oh that old thing," she actually giggled. "Just an ancient means of traveling the stars without a Star Ship." "I've never heard of it before, it sounds interesting though." "It is actually a series of stable Worm holes created by the Builders, and governed by Hub's second daughter, my sister 'Wanderer'." "The Builders? Who were they?" "Why the Ancients themselves," answered Unicorn. "They spread out through the stars in search of worthy life forms, most of which were primitive in nature." "So to give them a means to travel to the center of the universes, they created the Galactic Highway." I felt Hub's voice in my head. "Many races confuse the maintainers with the Builders, since the maintainers are constantly adding new additions as well as cutting off those who are deemed too violent. They simply run on auto pilot, sort of, continuing the great plan programmed into them by the A'shiwi." "Like the Loki," I mumbled. "Yes the Loki were among the first to be cut off from the highway." And I saw images of battle scarred crafts and destroyed ships as well as races I'd never dreamed of. "It is amusing that the Kaidran have not yet discovered the secret of the On Ramp here, or the exit, though they have every means needed." Said a small voice near my feet. Looking down I saw a Phase Spider, her body about the size of a Softball. "Welcome little one, I didn't hear you come in." "Forgive me, I didn't mean to intrude, I'm Ariel," she introduced herself. "And very pretty too," I told her, reaching my arm down toward her. "You aren't afraid of me?" she asked as she climbed up my arm. When she reached my elbow I crooked arm to cradle her. "And who's little one might you be?" I asked. "My mother is Zillah," answered the little potential Queen. "And you know where this highway entrance is?" "Calisto Four," giggled the little Spider. "Where Callie was born. But it is too close to our territory, they don't get close enough to activate it." "The Cylinders burry themselves until activated. Then they rise up and the Onramp forms. The first pair scans the craft for life forms. The next for serviceability. The rest accelerate it to speeds capable of making the jump to the freeway, as well as forming the worm hole to the highway." explained Unicorn. "What happens if they detect a problem?" I asked. "They all disappear and the craft just passes over bare ground." She sounded as if it was common knowledge. So there was actually more than one way to travel the stars, this was interesting. I wondered how long it would take to travel that way. then another thought struck me. "Unicorn, Wanderer isn't here, is she alright?" I asked. That was but one of her family that I had yet to meet. "She did not answer fathers call, but he says she is safe enough where she is. Some prehistoric planet named Earth. She is looking for something, but wouldn't tell Father what it was." "Does it have to do with the Freeway?" I asked. "No, but she has instructed the maintainers to bring her another on ramp. The planet has an off ramp, but the Ancients never finished building the On Ramp." Now I wondered where it might be, and suddenly I was looking at the stellar map of that Universe. I wonder how many of those planets have Freeway Portals, I thought to myself. Suddenly those with as portal showed in Yellow. "Why yellow?" I asked. "Fusion, and Cold Fusion Ships have to be careful they do not distort the worm holes by passing too closely." "Primitive fueled ships such as Earth is now using don't bother it, they simply pass through and never know it exists." "What about ours that use Drive Crystals?" "Those are cold fusion energy. If the frequency is tuned correctly, a Crystal Drive ship can enter the Freeway from any point." "But not a Hot Fusion ship?" "No the Hot Fusion destroys the sections of freeway it comes in contact with creating a dead space. But the maintainers are constantly on the lookout for such anomalies." "So planets only have one entrance and one exit," I reasoned. "Unless they are a Hub Planet, one which has no natural life. on those planets one needs special life support, and other races have set up means to trade, as well as guide others to different places." "So the portals are one way?" "No but most travelers lack the ability to reverse portals primary direction. Entrance portals are commonly located at the southern polarity of a planets axis, while exits are at the northern Axis. Which is why it is curious that wanderer has requested an Equatorial Portal for Earth." I could feel a sadness in Unicorn, like she was missing her sister ship more than any other. "Uni, once we are finished here, and Noxi's passengers are returned home, would you like to go visit Wanderer?" I felt a surge of joy through our bond. "If, if you wish to," she answered. "Can I go too?" I looked down to see Ariel as she stalked a Space Vole. I had no idea that one could have gotten aboard Unicorn. But then I thought perhaps it had entered while we were aboard the Equinox. "Sssshhhh, I brought them aboard for our tiny Queen," Uni told me. The day of the offensive arrived all too soon. All the Captains involved were in a strategy meeting with Hub when the first calls for help came. "Lupa Prime, we are under attack. Lupa Prime, do you copy?" "Wolves, they're near the Black hole," Churl reported. As he was preparing to transport to the Falcon. "First, fire up the pounce. Gorgon, Isis, Jaguar, Corona, link with my pounce." "Pirates, we have pirates trying to raid the Cat Ship Silent Night. They need help fast." Called the Wolf ship again. "Jerrell, we can't reach you in time. How bad is the Cat Ship?" "Not good, they're tearing us to shreds out here, but at least the damned cats have stopped firing at us too." "All hands prepare to pounce, Pounce!" called Churl. All the fighting ships were suddenly gone. Not just the ones my husband had called for but the Bio Ships as well. "Uni, why did they all go?" I asked. "Because the surprise is in our favor. The Loki will not expect us, once they feel Falcon's guns though they will know we are all here in mass." "Silent Night, Lupine ship, head for Helconia. Silent Night you will keep the Lupines safe until we return." I heard Churl order as he passed in pursuit of the fleeing Loki. Only this time he had the means to lock open the Phase Portals they opened to escape. They only had to cripple a Loki ship. The Phase Spiders would jump and take care of the crews in passing. But the ships had to leave the portals open behind them to let the spiders jump back when finished. Once they were in the Black hole we lost all communication with our ships. Only those ships in the same open track, could communicate with each other. Unicorn, her sister's and I sat on edge waiting. Allie bounced back and forth between Unicorn and Noxi, herself a worried wreck. If it hadn't been for playing the part of diplomatic arbitrator I would have had nothing to keep me busy as I waited. "Captain Jerrell, I am," I started introducing myself. "Yes I know who you are Callie, the lone survivor of the human settlement on Calisto." "Actually, I am not. I am Calista from the planet Calista four. But I am told we could be twins," I finished. "My Momma Captain Alice Dalton of the Equinox wishes to invite you to dinner aboard her ship. You and your other captains and any crew you feel you need to assure your safety.
