Part 7: Farewell
Rachel and Chelsea drove back home as quick as their anxiety allowed
them. Neither of them spoke. When they arrived, they slipped into
Chelsea's bed and hugged tightly, eyes wet with tears.
Morning found them like that.
They slipped out of the room without being seen and took turns to take a
shower before breakfast.
Steve walked into the kitchen while the two stared silently down into
their cup of cereals.
"What's up?" he asked worried
Chelsea had tears in her eyes. She stood up and threw herself around his
neck.
"Last night... we were attacked, Steve!"
He stiffened, clenched his sister to himself as his eyes moved towards
Rachel.
"Are you hurt? Who was it?"
The two told him about the previous night, and Rachel felt a weight lift
from her heart as she told him how Adrian had tried to hit her first and
Chelsea next.
The more the story progressed, the more Steve's gaze was filling with
fury.
"That bastard! I'll show him! This time he won't get away with it," he
shouted.
"Except that I suspect that's just what will happen," said Lawrence, who
had suddenly appeared in the doorway of the room with his wife.
"Sheriff Peters called. It seems that Adrian filed a complaint against
Rachel. He says he was the one assaulted."
The three stood there, wordless.
"What?" Rachel said, "I only defended myself! He ... he was going to hit
us... he was drunk and he wanted... he wanted to..." the word was "rape
me", but it died in her mouth. She couldn't even think about it.
"We've been in big trouble, daddy" said Chelsea. "And you don't really
believe that Rachel could attack someone right?"
Lawrence insisted to be told everything word for word, although the two
girls decided to leave out the latest developments in their
relationship. Adele was worried and hugged Chelsea tightly, stroking her
hair.
"You can swear that it was just self-defense, then," said Lawrence
finally, getting a nod from Rachel and Chelsea.
"I believe you, but the matter is complex. The sheriff is coming here to
listen to your version of what happened. You know he's a sensible man.
We'll find a way out of this situation."
As if the last sentence had magically summoned him, the sheriff rang at
the doorbell.
Alan Peters was a man between fifty and sixty years old, bald as an egg.
His remarkable size and his ruddy face were testament to his love for
steaks and beer.
"Good day, Lawrence, Adele, Steve, Chelsea." His eyes rested on Rachel,
surprised. "You must be the young Lewis. I heard about your Twist... but
I must say that to see it with my own eyes is another matter entirely. I
hope you are well."
Rachel nodded shyly.
"Please, Alan, sit down," said Adele, making him sit on a couch in the
living room. "How's your wife? Can I get you a coffee?"
The man sat down and the chair creaked under his bulk.
"She's fine, despite her back pain. And yes, I would gladly accept it."
He said. But then he turned serious and looked at Chelsea and then at
Rachel.
They told him about the night before, and he listened intently as he
sipped his coffee. The two girls were still very upset and had to stop
several times during the tale. Finally, Peters spoke.
"I know Adrian and I don't find it hard to believe that things are as
you say. He has already been reported for annoying behavior and
vandalism, and the people he hangs around with aren't much better in my
opinion. I must admit that I was not expecting something so serious from
him, though." He paused a moment, sighing.
"Unfortunately we aren't able to prove that your version of events is
true. The way Adrian tells it, it was Matt... " he paused. "Excuse me.
Rachel, to attack first using a Trick to slam him to the ground."
"Adrian showed up this morning in the hospital with an injury to his
left shoulder, probably due to his fall to the ground. In addition, he
had a less severe injury to his right hand. You two, however, are
perfectly unharmed. There was no other witness present, nor any camera
to record the scene. In a courtroom, it would be your word against his."
"However, there's more. I have received numerous calls today. It seems
that part of the city's most openly anti-Twisted people are taking it
personally, as a proof that Twisted are dangerous monsters."
"That's ridiculous!" said Steve
"I know. However, you know better than me how some people can be close-
minded. And we can't deny that some Twisted, either because of special
Tricks or personality quirks, can be dangerous to themselves and others.
Must I mention the Bogmann case?"
It was true. Simon Bogmann had been a particularly dangerous Twisted. He
had an obsession for firearms and had fought in the army for ten years,
before starting to go nuts. One day, during an action in the Middle
East, he had gone into a kind of fighting frenzy and had kept on
shooting at anything moving even after the battle ended, killing a dozen
civilians.
Later he was interned in a military psychiatric hospital, but shortly
after being out of it he barricaded on the roof of a supermarket with an
illegally acquired hunting rifle and began to shoot at people.
Eventually, the police had to fire back and Bogmann was killed.
It had been a cup of tea for the press. The event sparked a lengthy
debate on the safety of Twisted, with the more conservative politicians
pushing for the creation of very restricting laws to control Twisted.
"I don't think it would be good for you or the people around you to let
yourself be dragged into a legal case with an uncertain outcome, with
the added risk of a massive press involvement. It's election time, and
you know very well that the candidates would try to use you as
campaigning matter. However, we managed to find a diplomatic solution."
Rachel looked at him in silence.
"Your Aunt Mary phoned me. She said she spoke with the Adrian's mother,
and she said he was willing to withdraw the complaint as long as you
leave the city as soon as possible. And believe me, it would be better
if you didn't come back."
A heavy silence fell in the room. Rachel had left everything behind.
First her parents. Then her old body. Her girlfriend. Her last living
relatives. Now, could she bring herself to leave behind even the last
people still standing by her? She looked one by one to the others, a
questioning gaze in her eyes. She saw them return concern and sadness.
"Believe me, girl," the sheriff said. "I have a daughter around your
age. If such a thing happened to her, I'd wish I could cut the throat of
the culprit with my own hands. But unfortunately, I have to follow the
rules, and this time the rules play by their side."
"As always," Rachel thought.
In the silence of the room, her cell phone rang. She had an e-mail.
Miss May Rachel Lewis,
It is with great pleasure that we inform you that your request for
access to a scholarship for Twisted college students delivered by our
foundation has been accepted.
The scholarship will cover the cost of your studies at the Grace
Harrington College in Spiral, plus the cost of your accommodation at the
college campus and a health insurance covering every physical or mental
health problem associated with your Twist.

"May I?" Chelsea asked, coming into her old room, where Rachel was about
to finish packing.
"It's your room..." she said, without turning around.
Chelsea closed the door, hugged her and kissed her softly, her hand
stroking Rachel's cheek. She returned the kiss without much passion.
"What will become of me now? Of us?" Rachel asked.
"It 's your life. A completely new opportunity. You always wanted to
leave town anyway, don't you? A scholarship at the Grace Harrington,
nothing to spit on. Go to Spiral, find your new road. Discover who you
really are. A whole life lies ahead, Rachel."
"Do you think I'll make it? ...I feel so small and helpless..."
"You will. Like I said, you're a wonderful person."
Rachel nodded, and they kissed again.
"I decided to enroll in biology. I want to study Twisted physiology.
Work to better understand the phenomenon," she continued. "Maybe one day
we will be able to prevent the changes from being so devastating."
Chelsea nodded.
"Look, I had an idea. I don't have much to do in the next few days. I
could ask my uncle if he wants to take me in for a little. I could go
with you to Spiral, give you a hand in settling down. And then, you
don't just say no to a vacation in California. I only regret that Steve
can't come, otherwise this time Janice would shoot him for real!"
Rachel's eyes lit up. "I'd love it!"
"Then it's settled. I'll Call my aunt and uncle tonight."

The trip to Spiral was quiet, although a bit boring. They took a flight
to San Francisco, where they had to wait a couple of hours for the bus
that, going north along the Californian coast, would take them to
Spiral.
In the past the city was much smaller and more unknown, before becoming
one of the places with the highest number of Twisted in the USA. At the
time of his grandparents, with the appearance of Twisted, more and more
families had moved there to escape from a society that feared them and
the city had suddenly grown in size.
On Wednesday evening, the bus went through a tunnel and then, lying on
the bottom of a valley, bathed in the golden light of sunset reflected
by the Pacific, appeared the city, with its ordered rows of houses and
the harbor teeming with boats.
"Spiral," Rachel murmured. "My new home..."
