To my girlfriend, who knows all too well what it means to be different.
Part 1: A night to remember
As the victory screen appeared on the TV, Matt put down the controller
with a satisfied smile before kissing his girlfriend, Kate, who was
currently hugging him at the neck.
"Told you. This part of the game is really tricky, even with a high
level party you still need some skill to beat that boss. It's always
like this in Final Fantasy, you can find all sort of hidden areas to
fight bosses in, but they're tough."
Kate smiled back and caressed his head. "Thank you, brave knight, you
have slain the evil dragon for me. I'm going to get you some tea."
Matt's eyes followed Kate to the door, wondering how a looker like her
ended up dating someone like him. She was quite different from most
girls he had met before. First of all, she was much more of a geek that
her appearance would show - she was into all kind of videogames, comics,
anime and role playing games. Still, despite her interests, she dressed
and acted in a quite girly way.
They had known each other since childhood. Matt's father used to be
Twisted, which meant he was part of a group of men and women who, due to
a strange genetic alteration, went through some kind of metamorphosis
during their teenage years. The changes were unpredictable, sudden, and
could range from minor and harmless to life-changing and downright scary
or dangerous. Since his mother was not a Twisted, though, Matt had only
roughly a 50% chance of being one too.
Matt definitely wasn't a ladies' man. He was quite tall and had broad
shoulders, but he was overweight and despite having graduated from high
school he still had some acne on his face. His main interests were
gaming and comics. In short, he was the school's resident nerd.
Kate returned with two smoking mugs of tea and cookies and handed one
over to Matt, then leaned over to kiss his lips, her delicate hands
running in Matt's hair.
?Say, this weekend my parents are out of town. Do you want to come
over?? Kate asked.
?Sure.?
?Wonderful, I just got a bunch of new anime videos at the store. We can
watch some together and then you could sleep here. Your aunt and uncle
won't mind, will they??
?Do they ever really mind about what I do??

?Hey Matt, what's up??
Matt looked up from his comic book and saw a weird-looking boy smiling
at him. He was tall, dressed in colorful clothes and his unique looking
hair changed and shifted in color as he moved.
?Hello Steve. The usual, you know.?
Steve was Twisted too, and while he used to be horrible at anything
artistic his twist made him into a great, creative boy wonderful at
painting, drawing and acting. It also gave him his strange hair and the
ability to summon and control ghostly images out of thin air. In a small
country town like theirs, Matt's and Steve's were the only Twisted
families as both his father and Steve's parents were from Spiral, the
city with the largest population of Twisted in the world. It was only
natural then for them to grow up together, with Steve's parents being
regular guests at Matt's place. And then, a few years ago, Matt's
parents died in a car accident and he moved in with her aunt Mary, his
mother's sister.
?Are you and Janice still up for our RPG adventure tonight?? With his
extravagant looks and his skills, Steve had quickly become very popular
with the girls. His current girlfriend Janice looked like she was just
his cup of tea: a talented guitarist with a ?rebel rock girl? look.
?Sure. My sister Chelsea is coming over too. With you and Kate, it's a
DM and four players. I'd say we're OK. With all the time I spent
preparing this, I sure don't want to waste it.?
With that, the two boys started walking towards the usual destination of
their trips: the comics shop across the park.
It was a sunny summer afternoon. Children were playing in the grass,
middle and high school kids just hanged around. Matt spotted a couple of
girls from school, chatting and eating ice cream. Matt had spent the
month or so since his graduation from high school like this: just
walking around with Steve or Kate, usually stopping by the comics shop
or the computer store. Sometimes, he would follow Kate to one of the
clothing stores as she bought something. Other days, they went walking
or biking by the lake.
A lazy, comfortable pause between graduation and the hard times of
college.
?Say, Matt, did you finally decide about what to do about college??
Steve said.
?I'm still thinking about it.? Matt was a good student, but had only a
vague idea about what job he would like to do or where he wanted to go.
?I might try with a college in Spiral, though. It's a big city and I'm
sick with all this crap about my father here. Still, my aunt and uncle
are not very happy about that.?
Only a few decades had passed since the appearance of Twisted. Lots of
people were suspicious about them, if not openly hostile. Unfortunately,
the majority of the town's population seemed to be like that and this
meant Matt got teased a lot about his parents.
?Look, the freak and the half-blood. Going to get some new toys??
The voice belonged to an athletic guy who happened to be the greatest
bully of his school days, and the son of one of his aunt's best friends.
He was leaning against a tree surrounded by a couple of friends.
?Cut the crap, Adrian.?
?Aren't you too old for comics and stuff? Or maybe you're not man enough
for anything else??
Adrian moved over to cut Matt's path and hit him on the shoulder.
?I'm not going to fight you Adrian,? he quietly replied.
?See, you're a pussy. Just as I always say.? He snickered and his
friends laughed, then they all started walking away the way Matt came.
?Assholes,? said Steve. ?Adrian's just envious. Everybody knows he has a
thing for Kate?

?Good, we're all here!?
The five of them were all gathered in Matt's room. Kate had arrived
first, to help Matt prepare everything. Then Steve showed up with Janice
and his younger sister Chelsea. Despite being usually shy and quiet,
she
was very fond of Matt and admired him as much as she liked her brother.
Matt actually suspected she had kind of a crush on him.
?Wow! You really have a great place,? she said. ?I never came to visit
you since you came living with your aunt and uncle.? She ran over to a
bookshelf full with action figures. ?Cool! The whole collections from
Captain Harlock and Sailor Moon! This is pretty old stuff, I bet it cost
you a lot!?
?That's vintage, please! They were actually gifts from my parents,? Matt
replied. ?They knew how much I loved the stuff. They kept collecting
them in secret until they had them all, then gave them to me.?
Chelsea turned over to face him, her brown hair framing those puppy eyes
she gave to anyone who she felt was sad. ?Do you miss them much??
Matt's face turned dark. ?A bit. You know, it was bad to lose both of
them in one shot. And my aunt and uncle aren't making it easy for me.?
He turned to Janice and explained ?They're part of some kind of
religious sect that says Twisted are the Devil's children or some shit.
I'm not even allowed to live with them, they live upstairs on the first
floor. Something about not mixing with those with ?tainted blood?. At
best I'm a nuisance and at worse I'm a shame.?
?Yeah, I remember how they always tried to keep me and Chelsea from
seeing you. It's good they gave up eventually,? Steven said.
?Well, enough sadness!? Steve stood up raising his hand. Due to his
skills, he was an awesome narrator and always got that role in their
games.
Everybody gathered around a low table in the middle of the room, lying
on couches and mattresses in various positions. Kate started
distributing snacks and coke.
?This game was Kate's idea and I think the girls here will particularly
like it. Are you ready to enjoy some good old fashion magical girl
action? Pick your character, dice and pencil. Tonight, my friends, the
magical kingdom relies on you!?

?Damn that was bad.? Chelsea dropped her pencil as her last die roll
just doomed her character to a horrible death.
?I told you we should have confronted him outside of the castle. There,
we could have summoned the power of the stars,? Kate replied.
Steve stood up, moving his hands in the air to command the small figures
representing the fighters. Shimmering in the air were a dark armored
figure standing before the corpses of armsmen and guards, his last
victim's corpse still impaled on his blade. Only a purple-haired girl,
clad in a frilly costume, was standing between him and the entrance to
the throne room.
?The demon king draws his sword out of your comrade's chest and licks
her blood from the blade. Fools ? he says ? how dared you try to fight
me? How could you hope to defeat my army of darkness??
?I have no fear of you, fiend! I wield the power of light!? Matt
replied, looking in Steve's eyes.
Matt's character was the last one left. They had fought the demon king
to the bitter end. He was worn out, and just a few hits would be enough
to bring it down. Everyone in the room was staring at the two players.
This was the climatic battle, here the future of the kingdom would be
decided by the power of magic and dice.
?Hahahahaha! You are just a miserable apprentice and your magic is no
match for my power. I will destroy your body and drink your soul!?
?By the gods, this shall never happen!? Matt stood up, wielding a pencil
like a magic wand, and pointed it upwards. ?By the power of light,
transformation!?
It all happened in a moment's notice. Matt felt an electric tingling
running through his body. His scream was cut in half as a feeling of
burning and pressure stole his breath. Then, as a bright flash exploded
in the room he fell down and blacked out.
