April 8, 1948, From the Diary of Martha Kent--My daughter has faced her
greatest test since her transformation from Superboy to Super-Sister.
I'm proud, but not at all surprised, to say that she's passed that test.
That bewildered girl who came home one Sunday afternoon two years ago
has steadily evolved into a confident young heroine. Not that there
haven't been difficult and painful moments along the way, like the
funeral we held for Clark Kent that fall. By the time Labor Day was
looming it was clear that Claire was "stuck" as a girl permanently,
although that really doesn't feel like the right word, since she had
done such an admirable job of adapting to her new life.
We sat down together as a family, and by the time we left the table we
had decided it was time to lay the memory of Clark to rest and provide a
plausible explanation for Claire living with us permanently. We finally
settled on Clark developing a severe case of polio while still on his
visit with "relatives to the east of here." The week before school
started, Claire and I took a train trip together, letting everyone know
that Clark had taken ill with what at first seemed like a mild case of
the disease, but one that had dramatically worsened to the point he had
been placed in an iron lung. Jonathan stayed behind to tend to the
store, as the doctors taking care of Clark still were optimistic.
We traveled all the way to St. Louis where we stayed at the Majestic
Hotel and had so much fun shopping at big city stores like Famous-Barr.
We felt so elegant in their restaurant, wearing our very best dresses
and eating their French onion soup. Can you believe the store is air-
conditioned? I'm just a Kansas farm wife, but oh, life in the big city
is something! We even went to our first major league baseball game. Yes,
being changed into a girl didn't erase Claire's love for baseball. Even
if she can't play any longer, she still loves to watch. It's too bad the
Browns were in town that day. The Cardinals were on the way to the
World's Series that fall, but the Browns were pretty hopeless. The
Detroit Tigers beat them 11-2. At least it was Ladies Day and we got in
at a discount.
We felt guilty about the emotional turmoil we were about to put the town
through, but we saw no other way. On the morning of the third day, I
went to the Western Union office near the hotel to send Jonathan a
telegram we had already planned: CLARK DIED FIVE O'CLOCK THIS MORNING.
Funny thing is, Claire and I both cried. Even though she was alive and
well and standing right next to me, it did feel like a death for her
former self.
A couple of days later, we returned to Smallville, both dressed in
mourning black, with a weighted coffin in tow. Jonathan met us at the
train station in his black suit. We would all spend the next month in
black, and I hung mourning crepe from our front windows at home and at
the store. It was harder than any of us had realized. Claire spent a lot
of time consoling Lana, who really missed her friend. When the mourning
period ended, we quietly let people know that Claire would be staying
with us indefinitely. People assumed that she was there to fill the void
in our lives left by Clark's "passing," and in a way, they were exactly
right.
As I've already related in this diary, Super-Sister quickly proved
herself to be the equal of Superboy. She dealt with people in danger
just as effectively as before, and sometimes even better, thanks to her
super-intuition, the new power she gained when she became female. It's a
heightened form of feminine intuition that actually allows her to see
into the immediate future, before a woman is actually endangered. The
power doesn't work for men, and some people have noticed our girl seems
to favor women in danger, but since most men are still pretty gallant
about damsels in distress, no one seems to complain.
For almost two years, her super career didn't overtax her powers or her
wits. But the past few days have tested her like never before. Her
nemesis, ironically, was a one-time friend of Clark's: Lex Luthor.
I'm sure the life of Lex Luthor will go down in history as one of the
great tragedies of our age. Such a brilliant mind twisted to such evil
ends. Yet just a few years ago, Lex was Clark's greatest fan. He was
plowing his parent's field one day when he saw Clark's limp form ahead
of him. A large Green Kryptonite meteor had landed in the Luthor's
field, and Clark was stricken before he could get away; Lex saved him by
moving the deadly rock a safe distance away with his tractor.
An elated Lex brought Clark to his workshop, which was almost a shrine
to his exploits. In gratitude, Clark built a new, state-of-the art lab
for Lex to continue his scientific research. Lex devoted himself to
finding a cure for Kyptonite poisoning, and one fateful day he actually
achieved his goal, but in excitement over his success, he knocked over a
beaker and set the lab ablaze. Superboy was flying by on patrol at that
moment; he saw the Kyptonite sample Lex was working with, so he couldn't
rescue him directly. Instead, he used his super-breath to put out the
flames. Unfortunately, that triggered a chemical reaction that wiped out
all of Lex's work and created a vapor that caused his full head of red
hair to fall out. Although we'll never know with certainty, I will
believe to my dying day that the chemical cloud, the stress of this
disaster, or some combination of the two also cost Lex his sanity. He
raged that Clark had destroyed his work and made him bald from sheer
jealousy. From that moment forward, he dedicated himself to Clark's
destruction. Despite coming up with increasingly powerful weapons,
Superboy always managed to defeat him, and not long before Clark's
transformation, Lex was sent to the state boy's reformatory at
Hutchinson for a term that would last until his twenty-first birthday.
He remained there for the past two years, seemingly a model prisoner.
Then came the other day and a call for Super-Sister from the
superintendent.
Super-Sister landed behind the walls of the complex, and was soon
ushered into the superintendent's office. The words she heard caused her
blood to run cold. "Luthor told us exactly where he is. He's on a
tropical island, not even trying to hide out. He says he wants you to
come there immediately, otherwise he's prepared to detonate a Cobalt
bomb over a large American city." He handed her a piece of paper with
directions to the distant atoll.
"Cobalt bomb? If anyone is capable of developing something so terrible,
it's Luthor."
"Exactly, Super-Sister. But please be careful, the whole country is
counting on you!" he said as she streaked into the sky. Now that the
terrible might of the atomic bomb had been unleashed, leading scientists
were already looking at creating the next great weapon. The most
fearsome prospect involved adding cobalt to a nuclear device, which
would produce enhanced levels of fallout. So far, the Cobalt bomb was
only a theory, but if anyone was brilliant enough to make it a reality,
it was Luthor.
Minutes later, she was touching down on the remote island when Lex
waited. She was astonished to see a modest waterfront cottage with a
porch in front of it. Lex sat at a table on the porch. A vase of flowers
was in the middle of a sumptuous feast, laid out and ready to eat. Lex,
who still wore his gray reformatory fatigues, had a broad smile on his
face. Claire was baffled, to put it mildly.
"Hello, Super-Sister!" Lex said cheerily. He offered an exaggerated bow
and pulled out a chair, encouraging Claire to be seated. "Join me for
lunch?"
"Luthor! What is going on? Where is the bomb?"
Lex chuckled and shook his head. "I'm so very sorry to have created a
stir, Super-Sister, but I don't have a Cobalt Bomb--not that I couldn't
make one if I wanted to! I just didn't know any other way to get you
here quickly. I know your brother and I have had our issues, but I was
hoping you and I could have a far different relationship. Your powers
and my brilliant mind would be an unstoppable combination. We could do
so much good for the world," he said, reaching for Claire's hand.
Claire realized, to her horror, that Lex Luthor had a crush on her. She
pulled her hand away and said. "Lex. No. That's very kind of you, sweet
really, but you...you've committed crimes, terrible crimes. You tried to
destroy my brother many times."
"There's someone else, isn't there?" Lex snapped. "Or maybe you're not
interested in a bald man. You never knew me before I lost my hair--thanks
to your brother! Or maybe you're jealous of my brilliance! We could have
been so good together Super-Sister," he said, shaking his head sadly.
Before Claire could move to apprehend him, Lex unleashed a cloud of
Kyptonite gas from the flowers that sat in the middle of the table.
My daughter was overcome by momentary weakness, giving Lex enough time
to sprint into the trees, where his rocket-powered escape vehicle
waited. She tried to track him when her strength returned, but it was
already too late. She returned home and switched back to Claire in order
to make a study date she had scheduled with Lana Lang. As she and Lana
plunged into their science books, Claire couldn't help but look at
Lana's full head of red hair and wish that Lex still had his. Maybe if
he did, he would never have lost his ability to reason.....
We were listening to H.V. Kaltenborn's newscast after dinner a couple of
nights later when we heard the most terrifying report: word had just
come from El Paso, Texas, that Dr. Wernher Von Braun had vanished from
his lab at Fort Bliss without a trace. Claire looked at her father and
me and said, "I don't need my super-intuition to know that Luthor is
responsible for this." She was gone without another word, streaking
toward Luthor's island base.
As she flew, she thought about Dr. Von Braun's story; the brilliant
German scientist who had led the development of the Nazi rocket program
during the war that had just ended. After his capture, he had renounced
all loyalties to the Hitler regime and joined the U.S. Army's research
program. If he could change allegiances, why not Luthor? Maybe she
should have been more open to the overture from the mad boy genius? Yet
the thought of even pretending she had a romantic interest in Luthor
repelled her. If there was any boy she was sweet on, it was her
Pete....she forced thoughts of kind, handsome Pete out of her mind as she
touched down on the soil of Luthor's island lair.
"You're as headstrong as your brother was," Lex said in greeting
Claire. "I was hoping you might be more ladylike," he said with heavy
sarcasm.
"Well, I made sure there was no sign of a Kryptonite trap before I
landed," she said with a confident smile. "Now why did you kidnap Dr.
Von Braun?" Her super-intuition was on high alert, but she couldn't
discern the exact nature of the danger she faced.
Luthor looked slightly sheepish, but just for a moment. It was clear he
didn't really want to admit anyone might possess more smarts than he
did. "I have plans involving rocketry. The old man has spent a little
more time on that subject than I've been able to give it, so I'm taking
a shortcut. He'll make a useful lab assistant--for now."
"Oh come on, Luthor," Super-Sister said, not even trying to hide her
disgust. "Dr. Von Braun is brilliant, and you know it."
He shrugged. "Well, I will give the man credit for being a visionary.
He's come up with conceptual plans for a lunar base and an armed space
station. Together, we will make those plans a reality. The only
difference is that it will all be under MY control. I will be able to
claim dominion over the entire planet, once you are neutralized." He
smiled.
"It's true I don't have a Kryptonite trap ready," Luthor said slyly.
"But you missed this." With the flick of a remote control he held, the
island was covered in moments by an impenetrable red dome.
"That's a clever trick, Luthor, but it won't stop me from rescuing Dr.
Von Braun and returning you to the reformatory." She lunged at the evil
boy genius, but was astonished when he was able to knock her to ground
with a single punch.
"Excuse me for hitting a girl," he said with a sneer. "But I couldn't
resist. In case you're having trouble figuring it out, Super-Sister,
that dome blocks all the yellow solar radiation that gives you your
powers. With this red dome filtering out the sunlight, you're just as
powerless as any girl." He struck her once more, this time knocking her
unconscious.
When Claire came to, she found herself in what appeared to be a hospital
operating room, tied to a table. To her horror, she realized that her
tights had been removed and there was a foreign object positioned
between her thighs. Still groggy, she heard the voice of Luthor over a
speaker. "Super-Sister!" he cried. "I put my scientific genius to a
variety of uses. One of the many things I've come up with is this
amazing sex toy for females. Let me just say that when I activate it,
you will be overwhelmed by a pleasure so strong that you would never
voluntarily give it up--even if you had the power to do so." He laughed;
it was a harsh, evil laugh. "Now, I may be many things, but I am not a
voyeur. I assure you I will leave you your privacy while my jackhammer
does its work and Dr. Von Braun and I get down to business."
Claire struggled against her bonds, but found she was tied too tightly.
Within moments she felt herself being penetrated by the evil device. She
cried out in anger and shame as her virginity was stolen from her. Soon
the physical and emotional pain was replaced by an overwhelming
pleasure, the likes of which she could have never imagined. At first it
was exhilarating, but as the minutes passed, it became exhausting.
Claire learned about the differences between male and female physiology.
Just as one wave of ecstasy subsided, another one hit. She couldn't help
but think of it as a particularly diabolical form of torture. She lost
all track of time; she knew she was covered in sweat and her hair was a
damp, matted mess. Tears of frustration rolled down her cheeks.
Suddenly, the room was rocked with an explosion; Claire feared the
worst. By the time the room stopped shaking, she realized, to her relief
that her powers were returning. She broke her bonds, freed herself from
Luthor's evil device, and put her tights and boots back on. Before she
could take another step, the door of the room flung open. The brilliant
scientist Wernher Von Braun stood before her. The shoulders of his lab
coat were covered in soot, as if he had been fleeing from the scene as
the explosion took place. "Super-Sister!" he exclaimed. "Thank the
heavens you are safe," he said in his accented English. "With Luthor
distracted, I was able to deactivate his dome. Are your powers
returning?"
The caped heroine nodded affirmatively. "Thank goodness YOU are safe,
Dr. Von Braun," she replied. "It is an honor to meet you. What happened?
Where is Luthor?"
Von Braun smiled. "I'm afraid one of young Mr. Luthor's experiments got
out of control. He's paying quite a price for his foolishness."
"What do you mean?" Von Braun didn't answer; he merely gestured for the
Lass of Steel to follow him. They ran down a long corridor until they
found the ruins of Luthor's laboratory. There, amidst the overturned
tables, smashed ruins and broken equipment lay a voluptuous young woman
with luxuriant red hair. She wore the charred remnants of Luthor's
reformatory uniform. She was shrieking "No! No! No!" and her body was
wracked with sobs.
"Luthor?" asked an astonished Claire.
"Yes, Super-Sister. It's me," the transformed villain said as she picked
herself up and brushed herself off. "I was experimenting with a cure for
baldness. You've probably noticed that females are rarely bald. I was
using a mild solution of female hormones to try to correct
my...deficiency, when things got out of control. Oh God, the humiliation,"
she said, breaking down in tears once more. "This is ALL your fault,
Super-Sister!" she cried.
Claire shook her head sadly. "I'm afraid you have only one person to
blame, Luthor, and that's you." She looked at Von Braun. "I'll get you
back to Fort Bliss, Doctor Von Braun, just as soon as I deliver Luthor
to the authorities back in Kansas. I just hope the staff at the girl's
industrial school will be prepared to deal with her. But there's one
other thing I have to take care of first--gathering some evidence."
Soon Super-Sister was streaking skyward, the feminized Luthor in tow.
Resting securely in her cape's pouch was Luthor's "jackhammer." She
promised herself she would give it careful study in her laboratory
during the nights ahead. After all, it was important that she understand
exactly how the most cunning, evil mind she had yet encountered really
worked.
