Chem-Tech's Legacy - Chapter 5 - Alice's Story
It had been two weeks since the incident involving Tilly, Danny and the
tanker truck. A lot had happened since then. Most significant for me was
Danny's funeral. Everybody from school was there, including Tilly in a
black dress, tights and heels. She looked very smart and definitely
seemed to be adapting well to being female - and feline - despite
everything that had happened to her recently.
I'd always been friendly with Danny. He had been my best friend's
boyfriend's best friend so naturally we did hang around together quite
often. He was quite often a cocky little shit but he always had a grin on
his face while he was doing it. It was hard not to like him.
It was weird to see his coffin though. Last time I had seen him, he was
around my size. His coffin, however, must have been around seven feet in
length. All part of him turning into a husky hybrid I suppose. Many were
saying that this was probably the best thing. He had turned aggressive,
angry and resentful when he changed physically. He had tried to kill
Tilly on the night that he died and had successfully killed two guards
during his escape from the Chem-Tech facility. The old Danny would never
have done that and despite weeks of therapy, there had been no sign of
the old Danny coming back.
Strange things were happening at Chem-Tech. On the night of Danny's
death, several members of the board had vanished, along with two of their
top scientists. Nobody had seen or heard from them, or their immediate
families since. Because of this, the whole company had closed down.
We were into the Easter school holidays now. Two weeks off school.
Normally I would have been spending it with Jenny. But since her
boyfriend Phil, changed to Tilly, she's been spending a lot of time with
her, helping her to adapt to her new situation. And considering since
then, she's been humiliated by being spiked with catnip before being
attacked by her best friend and finally, watched her best friend die,
she's got a lot to cope with. Tilly definitely needs Jenny a lot more
than I do right now.
So since I was on my own (my parents were out with my bratty little
brother) I had settled down in the back garden to do a bit of gardening.
It was a little hobby that I had. Most of the plants and flowers in the
garden had been planted by me. I had to be careful though. I had a
potentially fatal allergy to bee stings. We had found that out when I was
six and had gotten stung. I knew the drill now though. Don't bother the
bees and they won't bother you.
I was just taking some cuttings from the roses when it happened, I caught
my finger on a thorn and drew a little blood. Thinking nothing of it, I
just went inside and washed it under the tap. Feeling a little faint, I
got myself a glass of water and sat myself down in the living room.
That was when I noticed it. My finger, was it turning... green?
It was. Then my whole hand. I touched it with my other hand. It felt like
a plant stem. Shit, this wasn't good. The green was spreading up my arm.
I ran to my phone and dialled 999.
"Emergency services, how can I direct your call?"
"Ambulance," I nearly screamed.
"One moment," the voice said. Another voice then piped up.
"Ambulance service, how can we be of assistance?"
"Help me. I'm turning green. I think I'm turning into a plant," I nearly
screamed.
"Miss, this is an emergency line. We would appreciate it if you didn't
clog up the line with prank calls," the voice said matter-of-factly.
"Bloody kids, have they nothing better to do in the school holidays?" it
said before hanging up.
"Shit, shit, shit," I said panicking. I looked in the mirror. It had
spread up my arm, past my neck and onto my face. Not only that, but my
brown hair was now turning green, the individual strands becoming thicker
and... were they flower buds starting to appear?
I rang Mum from my phone.
"Hello dear."
"Mum, you have to come home. Something's wrong and the ambulance didn't
believe me," I wailed. It was then I saw my fingernails on my changed
hand fall off and I dropped the phone.
My hair (if you could still call it that) was definitely flowering. Red
petals were slowly opening up all along the green vines that seemed to
have replaced any hair that I had on my head. My face had turned green,
my lips a slightly darker green, same as my tongue. My eyebrows had
fallen off as well as my eyelashes. The green was slowly spreading down
the rest of my body. My mobile phone and the house phone were both
ringing but I was too mesmerised by my changes to pay attention.
At this point, my entire upper body had changed. Not only that but leaves
had started to sprout from my arms. I could feel what little pubic hair I
had grown drop out as the green spread down my legs, to my feet and toes,
my toe nails dropping off as the changes finished. I looked in the mirror
again.
They were definitely rose flowers that I had growing from my head and in
amongst the leaves on my arms, I had thorns. Like the one I had pricked
my finger on earlier.
"OH MY GOD, ALICE?" I heard my Mum scream. I didn't hear her come in.
"WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU?"
"I don't know Mum," I started sobbing. "Help me. Please"
My family just stood there, shocked, as a bee landed in my "hair" to
gather pollen.
Author's note:
I know, I know. Tilly technically didn't make an appearance in this one.
And it's extremely short, I think calling it a chapter is probably a bit
generous (also, there's no TG. Sorry about that).
Don't worry anyway, Tilly is going to remain the central character in
this series, but I plan to have odd chapters like this just to show an
outside perspective of events that Tilly wouldn't be around to witness.
I hope you like the direction I'm taking this. As always, I'm open to any
suggestions you might have.
