Dr. Loren Garrett twirled her pen in her hand. She was looking over her
notes staring at Skye Jones, her latest transition counseling client.
"Since this is our last session together, how about we recap everything

"There was the initial confrontation with your family, the Christmas
break and your eventual enrollment into Hedgewing Academy for Girls. Can

"And the incident with Kyle and Betsy?" Dr, Garrett interrupted.

Loren smiled too. She knew she was supposed to stay professional but she
just couldn't help it. She had liked Skye immediately and they had
developed a playful banter without her really intending to. Loren could
imagine Skye probably had this effect on everyone in her life, she was
just so full of personality. It was going to be hard to say goodbye to
this one.
"As I was saying, Christmas came and went and even though that was the
first time I was intimate with Roald I still couldn't get over my fear of
him seeing me naked. We, uh, were intimate several more times before new
year. Then things became busy for us.
"I told mom it was okay to enroll me in Betsy's school. Betsy did her
best to appear indifferent with my decision but she didn't fool me. I

remember what she told me on my first day.

Skye paused and laughed a little at the memory.
"It was true and I was a mess that whole first week. The girls were all
so cliquey and..."
"Stuck up?" the Doctor offered.
"I was going to say proper. And some of them - damn, they were
beautiful. I felt like I stuck out, like any minute one of them was
going to point at me and scream, 'Ew! A boy!'
"Needless to say I just couldn't face Roald at all that week. Alison
helped a lot. Betsy tried to help but she didn't exactly have anything
to say; she didn't fit in either, afterall. But what was most shocking
was how my mother opened up to me about when she was a girl.
"I mean, we never talked like that. And, just like that, having a kind
of a mother-to-daughter heart to heart made me feel a million times
better."
Loren shifted in her seat and beamed. Her pen hadn't moved at all - she
had heard this all before - but still, there was something about seeing a
client come this far that always filled her heart with pride.
"Just a little more about the school and than I want to focus on your
relationship," Dr. Garrett guided.
"There was this one time - and I don't think I ever told you about it -
in the cafeteria. It was close to the end of the football season and
some girls near out table were talking about how their boyfriends were
going crazy over it and how stupid it was.
"One girl was saying something like how all men are dumb jocks and
another said something about how gross it was, them playing in those
tight outfits and getting all sweaty."
Skye gulped a deep breath before continuing with her story. Dr. Garrett
gave her a curious look.
"I couldn't help it, it just slipped out. I said something like, 'I bet
you wouldn't say that if you saw them in the locker room after a game."
Skye saw the look on Loren's face but merely said, "Yep, that's the look
they gave me too. 'Shut up!' one of them said. But I guess the look on
my face was guilty enough to be believed. It was true, after all. Betsy
couldn't believe what I had said and before she knew it, she had poured
half the ketchup bottle on her burger!
"Anyway, one thing led to another and soon all those girls were hovering

Skye mocked an angry look but there was no anger in her voice when she
resumed. "So Betsy comes to me not too long after that and - you know,
it's just like her - she blurts out, 'so you're a girl now, that means we

"Of course she wanted to fill me in on every detail about Kyle. The
shower, the bedroom, the kitchen table - I swear I won't be able to eat
off that thing now! But then she's also asking me a lot of personal
questions; about Roald and whether I'm on birth control or having my

With mild exasperation Loren countered, "We can skip the bit about the

starts asking me my opinion on condoms."
Skye looked to Dr. Loren for help but she just folded her hands and
waited.
"I mean, my opinion on condoms? I don't have an opinion on condoms. And
she's going on and on about how she doesn't want to get pregnant but how
her parents wouldn't stand for her getting on the pill. Yet she wants to
feel Kyle inside her all raw and - Ah! I swear! That girl..."
Loren was openly laughing at this point. "It's okay," she said, "You can
move on."
"It wasn't until Valentines Day that I knew something was up. I know, I
know, a girl like me should know better. Betsy starts the day by jumping
Kyle in the shower, then she comes down to breakfast with me and mom like
it's the most casual thing in the world. I mean, her hair was still wet.
"Anyway, I remember she looked a little taken aback. She comes into the
kitchen and starts in, 'I just had the weirdest conversation with Kyle.'
Well me and mom were pretty used to her antics by now so we just waited
for her to tell her sex story and, of course, she does.

"And now," Skye motioned to her lap. There she displayed the wide, round

"I'm just glad everything else went as smoothly as it did," Skye said.
"Mom eventually told me her side of things, when she saw me there in
Kyle's room. 'I swear,' I told her, 'I wasn't even really awake.' She
believed me. Eventually Betsy forgave me too but Roald and Kyle... well,
it was much harder to tell those two.
"Roald forgave me right away but we would fight about it often afterward,
then make up. Then we'd fight again and make up. His family is really
passionate like that too and I swear sometimes I think he makes a big
deal about it just so we have the make up sex afterward.
"Kyle never minded the idea of eventually having a kid but I don't think
this surprise was what he had in mind. Roald and Kyle still really
haven't decided who is going to play the role of the father. Maybe
they'll never figure it out."
Skye sighed deeply, having confessed all that once again. They had been
though all this material before over months of counseling but Dr. Garrett
had been right; going over it again all at once had been hard but it was
ultimately a good idea.
"What's important," the Doctor reassured, "is that you're going to be the
child's mother."
"Sure," Skye said apprehensively. "Can I ask you a question?"
"We wouldn't be here if you couldn't."
"How do I know I'm ready? I mean, not just to be a mother." The word
'mother' stuck in Skye's throat but she soldiered on. "How do I know I
really am a female?"
Dr. Loren fielded that with the kind of personal grace the years of her
Practice had taught her.
"I think that's an important question. First, I have to say your
situation is unique. I usually have the privilege of talking to
individuals whose biological identity doesn't match the identity they
hold for themselves. We spend our time then pursuing how to overcome
that misalignment and work on any of the related issues. You'll forgive
me for saying so, but with you it was almost sort of the reverse.
"Some might say then that you have it lucky but I'd still say you were
challenged in an area most people take for granted. So it's perfectly
normal for you to question things, I actually find myself wishing that a
lot of people would put more thought into their identity. So maybe in
that way you're lucky."
"Yeah," Skye countered, "but I mean, I like sports and I don't always
wear makeup. I wear jeans most of the time and I like hanging out with
the boys..."
"Those are just stereotypes. Stereotypes can be a convenient way to try
and get people to approve of how we want them to see us - a mask, if you
will. What's more important however is that we first give our approval
where it is needed most; to ourselves. Once we have that, it's always
good to have those around us support and love us based on nothing but
that. It's a difficult thing - maybe it's impossible - but at least
that's what I work towards accomplishing in my Practice."
"It's almost the end of our time, can I ask you one more question?" Skye
hedged.
"I'll answer one more of yours if you'll answer one of mine."
"Fair enough. But you never really said how I'm suppose to know if I'm a
female or not."
"And I'll never really be able tell you. It's not something that can be
boiled down to just what a person wears or how a person feels. It's a
more intimate, personal, gut feeling." And looking at Skye sitting
there, rubbing her pregnant belly Loren added, "I imagine it's not
terribly different... than knowing you're in love."
Skye smiled wide at that and instantly she thought of Roald.
She noticed the Doctor staring at her and they looked at one another.
The clock passed the hour mark and continued to tick but neither of them
were in a hurry to part.
"I think I am..." Skye said at last. "I think I am a woman."
"And I think you'll make a wonderful woman," Loren hushed, "and a
wonderful mother."
"So, what was your question?"
"Oh. I was just wondering, have you let Roald see you naked yet?" Dr.
Garrett was hiding the slightest of mischievous grins but Skye knew she
meant well.
"Not yet," she answered coyly. "Roald proposed to me last month. We set
a date for September - Oh! You should see my wedding dress! Sorry. I
get a little excited. Anyway I decided after that... after the wedding
I'll let him see me naked."
