Lunch was actually a lot of fun. Nobody referred to the previous
incidents, and I was encouraged to join the meal, which was a light
tuna salad. Annabelle served my plate from the salad bowl, and I
noticed that she measured my portion very carefully. She also passed me
a pill.
I looked at it warily. "Don't worry Nunkie, it's an appetite
suppressant. Nothing to worry about. We're going to talk about your
diet at our six o'clock appointment."
Conversation was very spirited, with much gossip about the riding
school and likely candidates to join the programme. Molly insisted that
each of her sisters was a prime target. The twins, aged 17, Mary and
Martha, and two younger girls, Matilda, 16 and Monica, 13 were all well
known by the team.
Rosie spoke up. "Well, they will all be living on the estate, so they
will be exposed naturally to lot of what goes on here. We will have to
be very careful not to break any laws; the authorities will inevitably
be coming for us as at some stage when we start to represent a threat.
You all know that riding is many girls" first introduction to sex, and
we can cultivate a general atmosphere that is pro women and anti male."
She smiled around the table. "We will allow some boys to join the
stables, where you lot can show the ladies and girls there how easy it
is to control a male, even without overt sexual activity. And although
the Estate is devoted to empowering females, we will think about a
subsidiary programme to disempower males, especially when they are from
rich and important families. One idea I had is to offer a reprogramming
service for boys whose mothers fear they may be gay." Rosie purses her
lips disapprovingly. "Such self-indulgence! In the New World the role
of the male is to serve Women, not to play childish, boyish games."
"In any event, we all know that stables are very sexy places! We can
use that. We should make sure that the girls become aware that girl
'crushes' are cool, while boys are faintly disgusting; to be
controlled, and ultimately subjugated. Differential punishments will
quickly send the right message. Girls caught being naughty with girls
will be invited to see me or Molly for a friendly chat. Boys caught
with girls will be sent to Georgie for a less friendly chat." Here
Georgie gave one of her sinister smiles. "Boys caught with boys will be
enrolled in a special programme devised by Maria and Annabelle." There
was much excitement about this. Rosie's Gynarchy was beginning to take
shape.
"As for the Mooneys, we need to evolve a strategy for Margaret first.
She knows about you two," here she smiled at Molly and Maria, "and
didn't initially approve. But Maria seems to have won her round. Any
thoughts?"
Maria considered the question. "At the risk of stating a cliche, it all
comes down to sex. Maggie is obviously a highly sexed woman, like her
eldest daughter." Here she nudged Molly who blushed while the rest of
the table giggled. "Monica was born long after Mooney was thrown out of
the house, but is obviously his, and they are still married, so
Catholic guilt is a big factor. Mooney has, as far as we know, not been
allowed back. So it's possible that Maggie has not had sex for 14
years. She also thinks that penetrative sex is 'a bit of a laugh,' so
maybe it doesn't really push her buttons."
Molly made a token protest. "That's my Ma you're talking about."
"I know Darling," continued Maria. We are talking about making her
happy. And advancing the Project."
"How come you lot all have names beginning with M?" asked Georgie. "Is
it some Irish custom?"
"Things to make you go MMM," quipped Rosie. Everybody laughed. Molly
kissed Maria. "I'll give it some thought," said Rosie.
"Now. Mam'selle," said Rosie, "we need to talk about Helene."
I gave an involuntary shudder. I was amazed that Rosie had persuaded
her to sell. My wife had had several attempts at trying to buy her
property, and they had ended badly. I never got involved, because, I
confess, I found Mme.Delacroix rather scary. On the few times we met,
she completely ignored me, and condescended to my wife as if she were a
dumpy and talentless pupil who she only taught for money. Rosie, on the
other hand, had always adored her. And, it appeared, the feeling was
reciprocated.
"She sold to us," Rosie continued, "because she is in total sympathy
with our aims. She was an early founder of the Gynarchy movement. She
gave me a very good price because she thinks we will succeed. But there
were two other stipulations. The first should be easy. We need to
ensure that she has at least nine ballet pupils every term, only one of
which must be a boy. From our network of mothers, daughters, sisters
and their brothers, we should be able to do that. And if we are
struggling, we can offer 'scholarships.' Amazing what people will do
for "free stuff."
"The second is more difficult," Rosie continued, looking at me. "She
insisted that one person should take a private ballet lesson with her
three times a week. And that he should serve as her maid for an hour a
day, except weekends. The person she wants, my dear Nunkie, is you!"
There was a lot of ribaldry around the table. Molly and Maria launched
into a song about "Nunkie the Supermaid."
I admit I was rattled. I guess I was still fooling myself that this was
a sort of sexy game that I was somehow still tangled up in. The fact
that Rosie had revealed yet another hidden agenda so soon after
compelling my trust was unsettling.
"Molly, perhaps you would like to help Dwoo to his room. He looks like
he could do with a nap before his medical appointment at 6". Rosie once
again flashed me her most winning smile. "See you later," she mouthed.
As I left the dining room, I caught Maria's eye. She didn't cough, but
did flash me a warning glance. Hastily, I gathered my ruff in my
fingers and dipped. "Thank you, Miss Rosie, for inviting me to your
delicious meal." Rosie didn't reply, but lazily winked, before lighting
a cigarette and turning to Annabelle to rejoin the conversation.
