Wish Shift: Chapter Thirty-Three A Woman Named Amy Year 1 A.S. Day 170 Amy had a busy day. They had left the camp earlier this morning and gotten on the road to go home. The other ladies there had gathered around her before they left, to pray the Lord strengthen her and her husband, as they ventured out into the world of the tribulation. It would not truly be safe for the Lord's people yet, but it had to be done. While she and her sisters in faith prayed, Joshua had gathered with the men led by Brother John while they implored the Lord to protect and strengthen him as well. Their children were still out there in the grip of that dying world. They needed to go to them and rescue them, now that Amy and Joshua had found the peace that their family needed to live in the proper way according to the Lord. She smoothed her ankle length dress as she sat in the car. She needed to look her best always. If she didn't, it would reflect badly on Joshua. After receiving a final blessing they passed out of the gates and made their way down the access road to the highway. Joshua drove as she sat beside him in silence. She kept her hands folded in her lap and her eyes ahead on the road as it passed in front of them. Occasionally she would cut her eyes to Joshua and check if he desired to speak to her. Since he didn't indicate to her that he did she remained in silence. There were not as many checkpoints going back as there were when she had come with him to seek help for her confusion at the camp. But they were still there and at each one she had to listen as Joshua identified them by those false and hateful names that they used to have. That would have to be endured. Things like being recognized as who she really was now would have to wait. When the highway patrolwoman leaned into the car to verify that she was Jake Reynolds, she had simply agreed that was who she was just to get this over with. She pitied that poor woman. She should have been home doing her duty as a woman and not trying to behave like a man. But she forgave her for the sin that Amy saw her committing. That misguided woman would learn the Lord's ways in time, just as she had. Their first stop once they arrived in town was not at the DMV, but the bank. Proper identification could wait until later. Right now she had to cleanse herself of her lingering sins. She waited in silence until she was called to meet the bank representative and even though it grated against her for speaking to a man in such a way, she instructed him to close all of her accounts and to transfer the funds into Joshua's accounts. It took a while. When she had been Jake, she had several that Kim didn't know about, but she would not be needing those anymore. Once all of Jake's assets were in Joshua's hands she felt some degree of relief now that she was no longer committing the sin of being independent from her husband in this way. Holding onto those things would have been a temptation that the devil would have used to drag her back into the old world and its confusion. She would have nothing to do with it anymore. Now that she was properly dependant on Joshua she felt much better. The next stop was at her lawyer. Her lawyer was now a woman so she felt better about directing her to file Amy's request of a change of identity and the declaration of submission that the Church's lawyers had provided them with. She also had to begin the process for having the restraining order against her lifted and all of their property transferred into Joshua's name. The restraining order was the most important thing to have lifted though. While it was in place she and Joshua were barred from taking her poor little son Mattie to the camp and more importantly, each day it took while that was done, was another day that he spent in confusion. Her dear little son deserved so much better and she would make sure that he got the help he needed. There was so much to do, but by the end of the day there had been much accomplished. Joshua drove them both to the church they had been assigned to and they presented themselves to the Brother who held dominion over this gathering of the Lord's people. She knelt in silence while Joshua presented their offering to him that it may serve the Church and advance the true faith. Once he had blessed Joshua and reminded Amy that she needed to kept to her proper place now that she was in the world, he allowed them to depart. Once he parked the car in their driveway she waited while he walked around and opened the door for her. He was so attentive to his duties as the head of their household now. He had learned to be such a righteous man during their time together in the salvation camp. He closed the door and she waited patiently for him to lead the way. Once he was the required distance in front of her, she bowed her head and followed him. Inside their home she looked around at how they had left it. She had so much to do. There was the residue of neglect that had fallen over everything while they were gone of course and Joshua had not been a bad housekeeper when they were so confused as to their proper roles, but this was her domain now and she had much to make up for now that she was in her proper place. Joshua went into what had been their joint office, she would join him later to complete transferring her remaining assets into his name, but for now she had other duties. After she had tended to those they would begin converting the office into his study. She would not need to return to that room after that again unless it needed cleaning. That was a place for men and she had no other reason to venture into it again. While Joshua busied himself with what he needed to do she prepared refreshments for him. After she brought them to him, he dismissed her and she returned to her tasks. That night after she had completed her list of chores she presented herself to him in their bed. As she felt him moving inside of her while she clutched him tightly against her she began to feel that things were starting to finally slip back into their proper place in their lives. Once he was satisfied in his desires, she lay there in their bed beside him until she slipped into sleep. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 171 Amy rose early. Sister Mary had impressed on all of the wives there the importance of doing so. The women that had not yet received the blessing of a husband to direct and care for them had also kept to the same schedule. They may not have had a husband yet, but they would be given to one before they left the salvation camp and had to know just as completely what was expected of them as any of the other wives did. While Joshua slept she resumed her duties. There was so much work for her just getting everything in order, but she would not even think of suggesting that he lay his hands to it. It was as much of a sin for a man to do women's work as it was for a woman to do men's work. It was all her fault anyway. If she had not resisted accepting her place, there would not be so much for her to do now. Between continuing her daily tasks she quietly checked on Joshua, he would be waking soon and she had to have his breakfast prepared for him when he entered the dining room. When he did wake she stood behind him while he pronounced a blessing over their meals. Once that was done she removed her portion and placed it in the oven to stay warm for her to have later. She returned to his side and stood quietly at his right hand while he ate. He didn't require anything of her today though. When he finished he rose and returned to his study while she attended to her duties cleaning up. After that was done then she could quickly eat her lesser portion in the kitchen. Joshua would see about purchasing a proper women's table for her to eat from later. She looked in the dining room and after a moments mental rearranging knew where they would put it. It would make that corner a little cramped but that was her burden to bear. She was just about satisfied with how one room was shaping up when she heard a quiet cough from Joshua behind her. Amy stopped what she was doing immediately and presented herself to him with her head bowed. He told her to prepare herself to leave the house and be ready in twenty minutes. She bowed her head a little deeper and went back to their room to comply. Once she was in the car with him, he informed her that they would be visiting his unbelieving parents and that she should make every effort to present herself as a proper wife to them. Amy nodded in acknowledgement. After they had returned from the salvation camp with the children then there would be time to share the Lord's truth with the other unbelievers in the family. But right now it was more important to reunite their family under the Lord. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Amelia opened the door and looked at them. "Kim," she said, "you know that Jake shouldn't be here. She's already in violation of her restraining order just standing on the steps." "I know that Grandmother Amelia," he said. "But she'll only be here for a moment while I let mom and dad know that we are back for good now." "You should have come by yourself Kim or just called," she said and then suggested that Amy wait in the car for now. Joshua directed her to go and sit while he spoke with his parents. Amy quietly said she would and walked to the car. Amelia watched her as she went there. When she got back into the car and settled herself she turned back to Kim. "Is she all right?" she asked. "I've never known Jake to act like that before." "Amy is perfectly fine," Joshua said. "She doesn't have any more confusion over who she is anymore." "Amy?" Amelia asked. "Part of her therapy was to choose a woman's name for herself and identify with it," Joshua answered moving into the house. Sam was at work already. Joshua expected that, so he was not surprised. He had to hold his tongue and not say anything about his mother spending her time outside of the home where she should be. Now was not the time for it. George was sitting at the kitchen table with Danny. Joshua greeted him and met his father with a firm handshake and told him that both of them were well. He asked about Jake and Mattie and listened as Danny told him about how they were doing. He had arranged for Mattie to see a psychologist while they were away and according to Danny, Mattie was showing a great deal of improvement in coming to terms with the changes the Rapture had made in his life. Joshua didn't approve of this outsider misleading his son, but he would remain quiet for now. Once Mattie and Jake had emerged from the salvation camp they would be finally as they should be though and the lies the devil was telling his son now would not matter anymore. Amelia suggested that she take the boys out for a couple of hours so that Amy could come in from the car. Danny agreed that would probably be the best thing for now and called them into the room. Little Jake saw Joshua and was clearly pleased that he had returned. Mattie also looked more settled and Joshua took some time to reassure him that his mother was much better now and that there would not be any chance of what had happened before ever happening again. He thought that he looked a little relieved by that, but he could tell that his son was still anxious about seeing his mother again. Once Amelia and George left with the boys he stepped outside and motioned for Amy to come in. He took her inside and told her to sit down at the kitchen table. If he hadn't done so she would have remained standing with her head bowed as was proper while he spoke and that was something that his unbelieving parents would not understand right now. She could repent of her sin of sitting with men as equals later. The Lord would know that it was necessary for her to do this now. She began by making her apology to Danny for her behavior. She did her best to reassure him that he did not need to have any worries that she would ever do anything like that again. She told him how much the camp had helped her to come to terms with what the Shift had done to her. She had almost used the Rapture instead of the word the unbelievers used for what had happened, but she didn't. She pleaded with him to help them return their children to their home so they could finally be a family again. Danny said that he would have to see how they were now before he could in good conscience go before the court and support that. He still was unsure about how much she had really changed and told them that it was Mattie's interests that he was most concerned with. He asked her husband about what the camp had done and Joshua started telling him a little about the program there. He started with telling him that from now on they would be known as Joshua and Amy Minton. He told them that he wasn't surprised by Amy taking a female name but that he wondered if it was really necessary for them both to make a change like that. Joshua assured him that it was part of the program and that it was what had started Amy on her path to recovery. Danny agreed that, if that was what had been necessary then they would respect their decision, but he repeated that the court would have to make the final decision about returning the children to their home. After they finished having Amy make her apology, Joshua turned to Amy and told her to share her news with Danny. Amy was looking forward to this. She had been since she found out for certain at the camp. As Danny waited she put on a big smile and told her father-in-law that she was just under three months pregnant now. When Danny asked her if she was comfortable with being in that condition, Amy spent the next few minutes telling him how happy that she was that she was going to be a mother. Danny seemed a little quiet in response to Amy's enthusiasm over her pregnancy, but he just congratulated them both and asked them if they wanted him to tell the rest of the family. They told him to go ahead this time and that next time they would do that themselves. Danny walked them out to the car and watched them drive away. In the car Amy had resumed her proper behavior and sat in silence with her hands folded over her belly while Joshua drove them home. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 173 Danny was disturbed. He didn't know quite what to make of what he had just seen while visiting Joshua and Amy. He supposed that it should have been something he should have expected, that Jake would take a female name, unlikely but expected to some small degree. Kim hadn't had much faith in this choice of Jake's when she asked him to come with her after the incident, but he was willing to try, if that would help Jake come to some degree of stability. He didn't expect that Kim would change that about himself either and having Amy take Kim's maiden name was completely unexpected. He wondered just what it was that they had done in that camp to bring about such a radical change in both of them. The one thing that he could see that was positive was that Amy no longer was so unstable. She was clearly not haunted by her lost masculinity now, but the kind of woman that she was behaving like was nothing like what she would have expected her to become in such a short time. Jenny had struggled every day with coming to terms with herself for much longer and Danny was proud of how she had worked to do that. Each time that he visited her, he could see the changes that she was making in her life and she didn't think that he could be any less happier for her because of it. Being with Derek as his girlfriend the last few weeks had made her happier and more complete than he thought possible for her. Kira and Sam had both made great strides in accepting who they were going to be now as well. But Amy was a different matter. Danny was surprised to hear about Amy's pregnancy, although he really should not have been. Amy was in her early thirties and was perfectly capable of conceiving another child. And given Jake's attitude toward such things before leaving, it was a safe bet that when she and Joshua had resumed their sexual relationship that she had not even considered that as a woman she should take steps to avoid that outcome. But what he had just seen in their home while he was visiting made him consider that there may be other reasons as well. He had come by to speak with Joshua about what they should do while the court considered their petition. He still was having to force himself to refer to them by the new names they had chosen, but after already doing that right after the Shift for the rest of the family and almost every friend that he had, it was not that difficult of a thing to do now. It was Kim, now Joshua that bothered her when it came to that. Amy had met him at the door. She was obviously in the middle of cleaning some part of their home when Danny arrived. She welcomed him and took him into what had been their home office. But now she referred to it as Joshua's study. As he passed through the dining room to get there Danny noticed that the room was a little more crowded. There had been a small table added to the room. It was lower than the old dining room table. That was gone as well. In its place was a larger rectangular one that stood in the center of the room. The smaller table was lower and crossed the foot of the new table like a tee. The first thought that he had was that it was a children's table, but the chairs were much too large for that and both of them were already set with a dining service that would not be suitable for children unless they were very well behaved. The service on the larger table was much more ornate as well. A sharp contrast to the plainer service on the new table. He thought of asking about it later if he remembered to do so. Amy ushered him into the room and then left and returned a few minutes later with a serving tray loaded with coffee and a small collection of pastries. She put it down on the small table there for them and excused herself to go back to her cleaning. This really bothered Danny. He wanted her to be comfortable being a woman for her own sake as well as for her family's sake, but seeing her behaving like this just seemed to strike him hard with its wrongness. Joshua asked him about the children and Danny started filling him in on what had been happening while they were away. Joshua nodded while he listened and didn't say much. He also didn't object when Danny suggested to him that until the restraining order was lifted that it would be best if he visited them alone. Danny didn't think that he would object, he had known when they left that, if this treatment program was successful. then that would be the probable outcome when they returned. He didn't ask very much about Little Jake though. And that didn't surprise Danny. Of everyone in the family, Little Jake had the least difficulty with the changes from the Shift. He did seem very interested in how Mattie was accepting being a boy now. That was not strange. Kim had been concerned about his former daughter's reaction to his change as well, but when he asked about it now, Danny was disturbed to hear overtones of how Jake was viewing it before she left in how Joshua framed his questions. After they finished talking about it, he said he needed to ask Amy something before he left. Joshua thanked him for coming and for taking care of the children for them. He suggested that the family gather here after the children were back under their own roof for a full family meal to celebrate. Danny said that sounded like an interesting idea and said he would mention it to Sam and the others. He left the study and looked around the room again as he passed through the kitchen and went into the little bathroom near the kitchen where Amy was. He wanted to ask her how she was doing. Since he had arrived she had not shown herself at all while they were talking. She had clearly been spending her day cleaning and reorganizing the bathrooms. There was a bag of garbage already tied up next to the door and she was sorting things on the counter into another bag. Most of it was cosmetics that she was apparently going to throw away. Danny asked her if they needed to be replaced and she responded that she could probably get some use out of them for a little while longer, but she was throwing them away because it was not really appropriate for her to use those particular ones any more. Danny looked at the reduced selection that she had placed on the counter and was struck by the absence of any personal grooming products that Joshua would need to use there. He also realized that of the three bathrooms in the house this was the smallest one of them and from what he could see, was being set up for her use alone. As he was thinking of asking her about that, she reached into one of the small baskets that she had placed on the counter and took out the plastic case for her birth control pills. Before Danny could ask her what she was going to do she opened the case and started emptying it into the running water swirling in the sink. Danny asked her if she was sure she needed to do that. He told her that, of course with a baby on the way that she wouldn't be needing them now, but after she had it, they would still be perfectly fine to use. Amy shook her head and tossed the empty plastic box into the trash. She told Danny not to worry about it. She would never need to have them again. She wasn't going to have that sin on her soul any longer and that nothing like that would ever enter her body again. She wrapped up the bag, excused herself as she passed by Danny and took both of the bags of trash into the kitchen to throw them away. Danny left after that. It was just too strange a thing for him to take in. And that was what really bothered him about Amy. It was like there was nothing that had been Jake left inside of her. When Danny had been Sam's wife he had done a lot of the things in the house. He had been much less traditional in that area than his mother had been, but he still had done a lot in that department. And when he had been in school he had known a few girls who came from families that were strictly traditional in gender roles as well. But not even the most strict of them had been like what he had seen from Amy so far. It also bothered him that Joshua was doing nothing apparently about letting her know that she didn't need to go this far in what she was doing either. Joshua should know better he would have thought. He had been a woman for over thirty years until the Shift changed that. And when he was that woman she would have laughed in contempt at any man that suggested to her that she should behave the way that Amy was doing right now. As he drove home he already knew that he wanted to talk about this with Sam and Amelia. And he was going to bring it up with Joshua as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Year 1 A.S. Day 176 Danny looked at Joshua in disbelief. He could not conceive of ever thinking that he would have heard him utter the words that he just had spoken. They were in Joshua's study. Since the pair of them had returned a few days ago there had been some dramatic changes in the house. All the financial records were already in there, but now they were in a new locked cabinet which Danny was certain the only key to which was on Joshua's chain. The room had been reorganized to reflect its use by only a single occupant. Before it had been mostly where the two of them had worked as they needed to when they were Jake and Kim. Now this was plainly a place devoted only for Joshua's exclusive use. Danny didn't even know where the other computers that they had were now. Before the Shift, each of the kids had one in their rooms and there were at least three of them in this room alone. He asked Joshua if he could get one of them out of whatever storage they were in so the kids could use it for their homework until they were able to return and was flabbergasted to hear that all of them, with the exception of the one reserved for Joshua's use, had been wiped clean and donated to the church. Danny didn't know what to say to that, or even if saying anything would even matter at this point. Being in this shrine to Joshua's role as master of the house was even more disconcerting with every word that spilled from his lips. He had gone from surprised to shocked and now horrified was lingering on the horizon. Especially after what he had just said to him. "What do you mean she did the right thing?" he asked Joshua. "I mean just that Dad," he said leaning forward from behind the big wooden desk. That desk was another new addition as well. Meant to convey the authority of the man behind it in no uncertain terms to everyone. "She has no business eating the devil's candy," he said firmly. "No woman had any business doing that before and they have even less business doing so now." "Those were your birth control pills before they were hers," Danny reminded him. "And I had no business taking anything that took control away from what the Lord had decided for me then," he said firmly. "Amy understands that much better than I did and the Lord has already blessed her for her obedience to him." "Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you and Amy when she was Jake both say that you didn't want more than a couple of children so you could take better care of them that way?" he asked choosing his words carefully. "No you're not wrong," Joshua said taking a drink of his scotch and then swirling the remaining liquor around in the glass. "We were both wrong then, but thankfully for us there are still some years remaining for us to allow the Lord his place in choosing that what that part of our family life will be from now on." Danny shook his head in astonishment. "I still can't believe what I'm hearing from you," he said refusing to call the man sitting behind the desk by name. "You don't need to believe it or agree with it dad," he said. "All you need to do is to respect the decision that I have made in regard to my family's welfare." 'You'll be on welfare all right,' Danny thought, 'You'll need it, especially if you go ahead with this breed of madness.' Joshua asked Danny again about how Mattie was doing. He didn't seem too concerned with Little Jake. Although with Jake taking the identity of Amy Minton, Danny supposed that they could just call him Jake now since he was the only one left with that name. He told Joshua that he was much the same as when they had returned. That he was making steady progress with his therapist and he was starting to make the beginning of coming to terms with what had happened to him because of the Shift. Joshua leaned back in his seat and said that he would probably make better progress if he was returned to his family as quickly as possible. From what he had already said, Danny thought that would be exactly what should not happen. Joshua leaned forward a little and asked Danny that, since they could not do so as a family, if he and Sam would join them for services this Sunday. He was particularly insistent that they should do so. Lack of faith, he proclaimed was the cancer that had eaten away at their family's foundation and now that their parents were united in their direction that he intended to see that particular rot removed from their lives. Danny had no intention of joining them at all. This was not the first time Joshua had brought this topic up. Since they had returned they had spent almost every evening with some group calling themselves the Church of the Blessed. Danny reminded him, as he had before, that would just not be possible. The terms of the restraining order were quite clear and if Amy was in that building then the children would not be there. Moreover Danny had no intention of setting foot into anyplace that had anything to do with what he had seen with how the two of them had changed. Joshua scowled. He said that Amy not attending church services with her family was out of the question and repeated the need to get the court order lifted as quickly as possible. He also made a point of telling Danny that as soon as it had been lifted, he would be at their home to bring his children back to where they belonged, so they could start putting their family back into the order that the Lord intended it to be under. Danny had heard enough. He told Joshua that he had some things that he needed to take care of and he would speak with Joshua later on. It was already becoming easier to think of him with that name. Danny was looking at him now as some other person. This was not Kim in his opinion. He was like a cardboard cutout of Kim with someone else's face behind it. And the person behind that Kim mask was rapidly becoming someone that Danny didn't want to have anything to do with. He left the study. There had been a call on Amy's phone as he walked into the kitchen. He saw Amy put it down on the counter and walk into her little bathroom. She came out a moment later with a dark gelatin pill in her palm and quickly swallowed it with some water before reaching for the phone again. On his way out the back door, Danny asked her what that was. She quickly said that it was a pre-natal vitamin she needed to take and turned her attention back to whoever was on the other side of her call. As Danny walked out of their house to his car there was something familiar about that black capsule that bothered him. He was sure that it was familiar to him in some way, but he couldn't place it. It probably wasn't anything serious though and he quickly forgot about it when measured that little tickle in his mind against the disturbing conversation that he just had with Joshua. That conversation had gotten even more disturbing when Joshua had suggested that after the children had been returned to them that Mattie would be better served by attending the camp that they had just returned from, than by continuing with his therapist. Danny didn't know if he could stop him from doing that, but the idea of Mattie going to the same place that had done this to the two of them was something that he had no intention of allowing to ever take place if he had any way to prevent it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Year 1 A.S. Day 180 Danny sat around the table with Sam, Amelia, George, Kira and Dianne. L.J. and Mattie were in the living room watching something on the T.V. right now. As far as Danny was concerned they should stay there for a while. This was a discussion that was needed to be had by the adults in the family and the two of them needed to be kept out of it until they had reached some degree of consensus on what needed to be done. After they had done that, then they would talk with the kids about it. Danny wished that Jenny could be here for this. She needed to be in the loop for something that promised to be as serious as what he thought it was going to be. He had already given them the cliff notes version of what he had gotten from speaking with Joshua so far. Some of them had also been over to visit since Joshua and Amy had returned and they had come away equally disturbed. Danny was already tired of being referred to as dad by the both of them. Yes, he was in Joshua's father's body, but it didn't make him any less his mother inside. He was not the only one who felt that way. Sam had gone over a couple of days ago on the way back from the shop. She wanted to stop by and see for herself what Danny was telling her about how the two of them were acting. To say she got a big dose of what the two of them were doing in this regard was a gross understatement. For one thing Amy had immediately started referring to Sam as Mother Minton, as if her name ceased to exist. That irritated her from the first time she heard it uttered. For another Amy was very reluctant to let Sam speak with Joshua. She finally said that he was very busy and that he didn't need to be disturbed with women's problems while he was in his sanctuary. Sam did not take that well and instead of losing her temper, she decided to play on this new religious fervor they both were displaying. She made it very plain to Amy that if they were serious about this new faith they had embraced then they should consider the consequences of Joshua not respecting his father and his mother. Sam could quote the bible too. Just because she and Danny were not besotted with it like these two had become didn't mean that she didn't know it very well. Amy had given in at that point and taken her into the study, while Sam was there with Joshua she got a very in depth taste of what Danny had been telling them about what was going on over here. She didn't spend as long with Joshua as Danny had, and what's more she got the distinct impression that having to relate to her like this was making Joshua uncomfortable, as if being in a room alone with her was not intolerable for him, but he had to do it because this was his mother's body. On the way out Sam decided to have another word with Amy about this Mother Minton business. She bluntly told Amy that in all of the years that she had known him as Jake when he was both male and female she didn't need to speak to her in such a formal fashion. She was still Sam and she would be obliged if Amy just referred to her that way from now on. Amy had flatly refused. She told Sam that she did respect her as her mother-in-law, but it would be sinful for her to speak to her like that ever again. She started to talk about how now that things had changed for everyone that they needed to get back to what they should have never stopped doing. That they should be extra careful to order their lives in a proper fashion. Sam had been hearing that particular phrasing a lot since they had come back and asked Amy directly what she meant by it. She almost immediately wished she hadn't. Amy started talking right away about it. Almost as if she had a prepared speech on the topic ready and waiting to use. She was just in the middle of telling Sam about, how now since women should just be women and any other choice was sinful, when her phone rang and she excused herself from the conversation to answer it. Sam told everyone that she had seen the same thing Danny had. Amy had gotten one of those black gelatin pills from her bathroom and immediately taken it. She hadn't even bothered to continue her speech to Sam while she was talking to whoever was on the other end of that call. But while Sam steamed over the load of utter bullshit that was flowing from Amy's mouth she did notice something else. Amy sounded strange while she was talking on the phone. She had been very animated and defensive while proclaiming her view on what women should be now, before the call. In that regard she was very much her old self. Jake had been equally as bellicose, especially when he was wrong and was convinced he was right. But this was nothing like that. From what Sam could hear from her end of the one-sided conversation it was more like listening to someone who was tripping out on some kind of drug that made them especially placid. Even before the call had ended Sam had already had enough of this bullshit and had decided to leave. When Amy hung up the phone she expected that she would pick up where she left off in her speech, except that she didn't. She just stood there for a few minutes without saying a word. Sam got up from the chair she had been sitting in and told her that she was leaving now, before she said something that she would regret saying. She also told Amy to strongly consider that she may be completely wrong in how far she was taking this new attitude of hers. Amy started to say something in return and then lapsed into silence again after just agreeing that she would think about that. Amelia looked very interested when Sam started describing what Amy had done. She asked Sam if Amy had told her what they were and she admitted that she hadn't. Danny said that Amy told him they were a pre-natal vitamin, but he hadn't seen anything like what Sam was describing, but then he had also left just after she had taken them. "There is no vitamin that I have ever seen in over sixty years that would do anything like what you just described Sam," she said. Danny nodded his head as well. He had been a nurse for a long time as well and if he had seen what Sam was describing he would have immediately known that so-called vitamin was nothing of the sort. There was something more going on here and it was sending all of their alarm bells into a clanging frenzy. Amelia had also visited Amy as well. Joshua was out of the house when she came by, so it was just the two of them. Amy had been moving some things out of the house and into a small shed that had been erected since they had come back. At first Amelia thought that they had decided to put a storage shed on their property and Amy was taking some things into it. Amelia offered to help her carry one of the boxes out there. But instead of more boxes inside the small walls she found an entire outside room had been set up complete with small bed and a portable toilet in one corner. Amelia had joked to Amy that this was a little small for a mother-in-law room, but Amy had ignored the joke and said that it was for her after she had the baby. Amelia had been shocked that she was speaking about doing such a thing and even more shocked when Amy said that she wouldn't be staying there all of the time. Just when she was unclean. Amelia looked at all of them, slack jawed at what she had told them. "It's been over fifty years since I heard any woman speak that way," she said. "And that woman was a cleaning lady who came from somewhere far up in the hills in the real backwoods. She was a real snake handler type too. And the minute Amy started talking that way, it was like I was hearing that woman all over again. I never forgot the way she spoke about that, because it disgusted me so much that someone would have such an enormous pile of shit stuffed into them over something like that." After they discussed it some more they were all pretty much in agreement that they should contact the court and tell the judge what they had observed about those two since they had returned. Dianne suggested that she talk first with Judge Gillespie. He wasn't a family court judge, but he did know them professionally and personally and his opinions on what they should and could do would be invaluable to them in this matter. George and Kira were a little more blunt on the subject. They both agreed that with the way the two of them were acting that anything that delayed or kept the two of them from getting their claws into those kids, particularly Mattie, needed to be done. When Danny mentioned Joshua's insistence on sending Mattie and L.J. to the same camp that they had just returned from, Kira became especially vehement that they not be allowed to do that, that whatever it took for the family to prevent it, needed to be done. For now though they decided to watch the two of them very carefully and remember every incident of strange behavior while Dianne saw what they could do legally. Whatever it was that they ended up having to do they wanted to make sure that they were able to take whatever steps were necessary to protect both of the kids now, especially Mattie. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
