work and support, his business was thriving and had become the "go to"

wide and online orders from around the world. Now, as he happily

he would never have met Nikki or Kylie, without Nikki, Kylie would

would probably still be struggling to keep his head above water in the

But as Dev smiled to himself, he knew that the day really belonged to
his new wife. Having completed her surgeries three months earlier,
she had been given the "all clear" by her surgeon the previous week
and tonight would mark her final right of passage into womanhood.
Kylie too was blossoming into a stunning young woman. As soon as she
passed her 18th birthday, she was prescribed transition strength

As the photographer lifted his camera to take the photograph, the two

Dev, of course, knew that his sister was gay but had had no idea how
close she and Kylie had become. It had all started innocently. A
couple of days after Kyle had taken the momentous decision to
transition full time to Kylie, Kiran (who was Kyle's social worker)
phoned Dev to ask how Kyle was getting on. Dev smiled to himself as
he told Kiran that she'd better come and see for herself.
Dev wasn't around as Kiran walked into the shop; she said hello to Sue
who was in her normal position behind the counter and then looked
around for Kyle.
"Is Kyle in the stockroom?" she asked Sue.
"No, I'm here," said a voice behind her.
Kiran turned round to see the now transformed Kylie standing there
looking every inch the confident young woman.
"Kyle?"
"It's Kylie now. Sorry if this is a bit of a surprise!"
"Stop messing around with me. You must be Kyle's twin sister.
Where's he hiding?"
"Kiran, it's really me," Kylie assured her.
Kiran looked harder and noticed the characteristic mole which had
always been just below Kyle's left ear.
"Well young man, er lady, I think you've got rather a lot of
explaining to do. I'm also responsible for you until you're 18 so I
have to make sure you've not been forced into this."
After agreeing with Sue that she was happy to be in the shop on her
own, Kiran and Kylie went to a local coffee shop where Kylie told
Kiran everything from being caught admiring the shoes to the meeting
with Nikki and dinner with her and Dev when they made plans for the
business. Kiran listened carefully, making notes of everything Kylie
told her before asking.
"But is this what you really want?"
Kylie thought for a moment before answering.
"I've never wanted anything more in my life. What you see now is who
I really am. All of that other stuff, the stealing, the fights, the
swearing, was just my way of channelling my anger but at last it's
been set free. If it wasn't for Dev and Nikki, I'd still be trapped
in a body I hated and a life I detested."
Kiran smiled. "I need to make a full report for the local authority
but I can see from the change in your personality that it's the right
thing to do so you'll have my full support. Anyway, you're 18 next
month so you'll then be free to do whatever you want without any
interference from me."
At their final meeting before Kylie turned 18, Kiran was able to
confirm that the local authority had raised no concerns about the
situation and, in fact, seemed relieved that Kyle's life of crime had
come to an end. At the end of the meeting, Kiran wished Kylie well
for the future but then Kylie spoke.
"I'd really like to keep seeing you if that's allowed. Nikki's been a
huge help but I really need a friend who's grown up as a female to

"I'll have to check with my boss but it should be OK. She's in today
so I'll go and ask him now."
Kiran left the room, returning a few minutes later with a man.
"Kylie, Kiran has told me about your request and I just need to check

them to keep meeting as friends.
"How about a drink next Friday then?" asked Kylie. "My birthday's on
Thursday so it'll be a nice celebration."
Kiran agreed and arrangements were made.
As the two women met in the local wine bar the following Friday, each
complimented the other on their outfit. Kylie had chosen a short
dress and heels from a new batch of stock she'd chosen for the shop
and Kiran had gone for a simple outfit - just a blouse and skinny
trousers with high heeled sandals but, being Asian, she was dripping
with gold jewellery. Both women had gone for glamourous makeup which,
ironically had made Kylie look somewhat older than her 18 years and

time they got up to go home, there were two empty bottles of Prosecco
on the table.
As both women felt a little unsteady on their heels, they realised
that the second bottle probably hadn't been a good idea and Kiran

up.
As they both flopped down onto the sofa with their mugs of coffee,
Kylie started questioning Kiran.
"So, how come a beautiful woman like you hasn't been snapped up by
some rich guy?" she asked.
Kiran laughed. "Oh, I've had plenty of offers but none of them were

"If they were rich, surely they were suitable?" laughed Kylie. "Isn't
that what every woman wants? To live a life of luxury spending their

"It did cross my mind," admitted Kiran, "but, in the end, I could
never have been happy with any of them."
"Why not?"
"Because I was not sexually attracted to them. In fact, I'm not
sexually attracted to any man as I'm gay."
Kylie looked at Kiran, shocked. Kiran smiled back and, at that point,
something clicked. They sat looking into each other's eyes for what
seemed like an eternity. Finally, Kylie drew a deep breath.

Kiran was surprised by the question but her eyes remained fixed on
Kylie's. She opened her mouth to answer but Kylie didn't wait to hear

involvement, is strictly against the rules. I could lose my job for
this."
"OK, I get that. What else?"
"I'm old enough to be your mother. You've got your whole adult life
ahead of you and when you're my age, I'll be drawing a pension."
Kylie thought for a moment. "Let me ask you a question," she asked
with a serious look on her face, "if I'd been 10 years older and you'd
been 10 years younger and you'd not been my social worker, would you
have still wanted to do what we did or was it just the Prosecco
talking?"
Kiran answered immediately "I would have still wanted it. I have to
be honest and say that I'm fascinated how you could turn from a surly
delinquent to a delightful young woman so quickly but ever since I
first saw the new you last week, I've not been able to put you out of
my mind. Quite simply, you're the most beautiful and engaging woman

each other, Dev and Nikki approached them.
"I think you two have rather a lot of explaining to do," he said
sternly.
"Do you want the short version or the long version," Kylie replied.
"Save the long version for later. Just give me the short version,"
said Dev mindful of the fact that he and Nikki were halfway through
their wedding day.
"OK, the short version," started Kylie "I'm in love with your sister."
Dev turned to Kiran. "And how do you feel?"
"Exactly the same. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me."
Dev and Nikki both broke into broad smiles. "That's all we need to
know for now - today just keeps getting better and better," he
exclaimed as the two couples walked arm in arm to the hotel opposite
where the reception was taking place to take their seats at the top
table where Dev was soon to be seen frantically rewriting his speech.

As Dev and Nikki held each other in bed that night, Dev could still
hardly believe what had happened.
"Who'd have thought it? Kiran and Kylie a couple! I just don't know
how they kept it from me!"
Nikki ran her hand down Dev's body and started playing with his penis

he turned serious.

this romance is doomed so I think you should stop it right now."
Kiran and Kylie both looked shocked.
"What right do you have to say that?" answered Kiran angrily.
"Well, I would have thought it was obvious," replied Dev, "you, Kiran,
are lesbian and only interested in women and you, Kylie, are legally
male. I just don't see how it can continue."
"I can't believe what I'm hearing," ranted Kiran.
"I thought you were on my side, Dev," added Kylie tearfully.
"Of course," continued Dev, "there is a solution."
The two women looked puzzled as he removed an envelope from his pocket
and handed it to them.

Kiran opened the envelope and showed Kylie the cheque for ?50,000.

far too much for Nikki to give away."
"On the contrary replied Nikki, that's only a small part of what I
have and with Dev's business now doing well, we're earning all of the
money we need so please take it with our love because you both deserve
it."
"Thank you so much," they both said before glancing over at Dev who
looked serious again.
"OK, you have my blessing. Your romance may continue," he said before
bursting out laughing and apologising if his joke had gone a little
too far.
"We'll forgive you but don't for one moment think we'll forget! You
will pay big time for this one!" replied Kiran with a twinkle in her
eye.

Dev looked around the room. Two years had now passed since his
wedding to Nikki and the family had gathered together for his 50th
birthday.
Kiran, who he still thought of as his little sister despite her now
being in her mid-40s looked blissfully happy with Kylie, now a
stunning 20 year old and having completed all of her surgeries thanks
to Nikki's generosity.
He then looked over to Nikki; he still found it hard to believe that
someone so beautiful could possibly be his wife. He then looked over
at Julie, Kylie's mother and his own parents, now in their 70s. The
only people missing were Nikki's parents who lived overseas.
For a family so unusual, everything seemed so normal. His parents had
initially found it difficult to comprehend how both of their children
could fall in love with women who had both once been male but on
meeting Nikki and Kylie for the first time, there was an instant bond
and acceptance. With laughter filling the room, Dev & Kiran's father
clapped his hands together to get everyone's attention.
"I know I say this every time we all get together but I'll say again
how proud we are of Dev and Kiran and their beautiful partners. They
have always been wonderful children but to see how happy Nikki and
Kylie have made them still brings tears to my eyes. Thank you both
for everything you've done for my children."
He stopped for a moment before turning to Dev and Kiran.
"Now, you two. When are you going to give your mother and me some
grandchildren?"
Dev looked uncomfortable. "Er Dad, you know why we can't do that."
His father was unrepentant. "wouldn't you like a child or two?"
"Of course," Dev replied, "but not having children is a small price to
pay for being with the love of my life." He turned to Nikki who then
spoke.
"Well, I'd like a child."
"There you are, see?" exclaimed Dev's father, "your wife wants a child
so you need to do something about it."
He then turned to Kylie and added, "I bet you'd like one too, wouldn't
you?"
Kylie just smiled but made no attempt to contradict him.

put upon. "Steal kids from the local supermarket while their mothers
aren't looking?"
"Now, now, there's no need to be cheeky! All I'm saying is that, if
you want a child badly enough, you'll find a way."
Julie had been very quiet as she still felt like a bit of an outsider
to the family. She sat thinking about Dev's father's words for a
couple of minutes and then turned to Kiran and asked her if she could
have a word outside.
The two women left the room but, a few minutes later, Kiran put her
head round the door and asked Nikki and Kylie to join them.
With just his parents left in the room, Dev turned to his father and
said, "Dad, you've got to drop this. You know why Nikki and I can't
have children and carrying on about it is just going to upset her."
"I'm sorry, Dev. I was just hoping you could adopt a child or
something like that."
"It's not that easy. I'm sure that we could find a child to adopt
either here or abroad but not everywhere will be tolerant of Nikki's
situation and I don't want to raise her hopes, only to see them
dashed."
Dev had just finished when the four women returned to the room. Kiran
started talking.
"We've come up with an idea which, quite frankly sounds ridiculous
but, equally, is so logical that I'm surprised that we didn't think of
it earlier. I'll let Julie explain."
"OK," started Julie, "only Kiran and I are capable of carrying
children. We're both approaching the age when conceiving will be more
difficult and risky so we need to make a start immediately if we're
going to be successful. So Kiran and I will each become pregnant."
"So Kiran has her own child and you have a child for us?"
"No, it's not that simple," continued Julie, "the babies will need
fathers and we want the children to be as close a family match to
their parents as possible. That means that I have to be the mother of
Kylie's child, not yours."
"OK so Kiran's going to be the mother of my child but where do I come
into this as I clearly can't be the father if my sister is the
mother?" Dev was, by now, getting very confused and the arrangement
was about to get even more complex.
"That's where I come in," said Nikki.
Dev put his head in his hands. "How can you possibly be a baby's
father?"
"Well it's clearly not by the obvious way as I no longer have what it
takes, so to speak. However, before I transitioned, I froze several
samples of sperm in case I ever wanted children and so my sperm,
combined with Kiran's egg will give us a child with very similar DNA
to any child of ours if we'd been able to conceive naturally."
Dev started to understand but then asked, "So why can't Kylie do the
same for Kiran?"
"Because I didn't freeze any sperm. I was only 19 when I had my
gender surgery and it was the last thing on my mind to tell the truth.
Anyway, my mum's DNA is a close match to mine so it should be fine."
"But your mum will be the baby's mother. Who will be the father?"
"That's where you come in, Dev," replied Kiran. "You'll provide sperm
to fertilise Julie's egg and, with your DNA being similar to mine, the
baby will be a close match to both me through you and Kylie through
Julie."
"But wouldn't you want to mother your own child?" asked Dev finally
starting to get his head round the proposal.
"Of course I would but that would then mean that my child would have
no genetic connection to Kylie and what we're suggesting is a far
better compromise. And let's face it, we see so much of each other
anyway that you and I will have almost constant access to our
biological children even though we've effectively swopped them over."
Dev's brow furrowed again.
"So let me check I've got all of this. I will be the father of my
niece or nephew whose mother will also be their grandmother. My
child's mother will be my sister who'll also be their aunt and their
father will be their mother. Is that it?"
"Exactly," laughed Kiran, "I don't know why you had so much trouble
understanding it!"
Their father laughed. "There is, of course, an easier way of looking
at it. I will be my grandchildren's grandfather and very happy as a
result."
As everyone laughed, Dev turned to Julie.
"Er, Julie. When, er, how do we er...?"
"I'll stop you there, Dev," laughed Julie, "I like you a lot but not
that much. We'll get two kits off the internet, one for us and one
for Kiran and Nikki, and do it much the same way as farmers do with
their bulls if you don't mind!"
"That's fine by me," laughed Dev, relieved that he wasn't being asked
to cheat on his wife.

Nine months later, Dev got the call he was waiting for at work. It
was Nikki who simply said "it's started."
Dev knew exactly what that meant and, calling to Kylie to get ready to
go, the two of them dashed out of the shop and rushed to the hospital.
Nikki had generously arranged for both women to have their babies at
the local private hospital; Julie was in the delivery room having gone
into labour and, Kiran, as agreed, was having a caesarean so that the
babies could be born simultaneously making the exchange less traumatic
for the two birth mothers.
As Dev and Kylie walked into the hospital, a nurse was waiting for
them.
"Is everything OK?" asked Dev, a little worried.
"Everything, and everyone, is absolutely fine," laughed the nurse as
she led them to a large ward which had been especially set aside for
them.
As they entered the room, there was a distinct party atmosphere.
Kiran and Julie, who had both just given birth, were lying on their
beds, Kiran holding a tiny baby with a little blue hat on. Nikki was
sitting with her parents who had come over especially on the opposite
side of the room surrounded by cots and Dev and Kiran's parents were
sitting on Julie's bed, laughing and joking like old friends with her.
"Look Dev, he's got your nose!" laughed Kiran. "Come and give your
nephew a kiss."
Dev bent down and kissed his nephew, his son, tenderly on the forehead
before turning to Kylie who was by now sitting on a chair between her
mother's and her partner's beds and, with a tear in his eye telling
her that she had the most beautiful son ever. She smiled broadly and
nodded as Kiran carefully passed their son to her to hold for the
first time.
He then left the three of them to enjoy the new arrival to their
family before walking over to Nikki.
"Come and say hello to your daughters," she laughed.
Dev looked shocked. "Daughters? How many?"
"Three. Oh sorry, did we forget to tell you that Kiran was expecting
triplets for us?"
"Yes you did!"
Kiran laughed out loud "sorry Dev, my fault but consider it payback
for that evil trick you played on Kylie and me after your wedding.
Anyway, enjoy the bathroom while you can because by the time they're
teenagers, you'll never be able to get near it!"
Dev looked over at Kiran.
"Kiran, have I ever told you how much I hate you?" he laughed poking
his tongue out at her like a naughty five year old.
"Well, I hate you more," she replied with a smile, poking her tongue
out even further.
Dev thought for a moment. He was not going to let Kiran get the upper
hand.
"What I want to know is how a sister like you can produce three such
beautiful babies. Are you sure they're yours?" he laughed poking his
tongue out again.
"Quite sure. And you know how you always say that girls turn into
their mothers as they grow up? Well you're going to be surrounded by
three of me, so there!"
"I'm rather hoping that that has more to do with nurture than nature.
I'd happily fill my house with any number of Nikkis!"
Dev and Nikki's father spoke, "Will you two children ever grow up?"
They both looked at him and said, in unison "No, Never!"
Dev laughed and looked back at Kiran, blissfully happy with Kylie now
gently rocking their son.
"I'll never forget what you've done for me," he said showing sincerity
at last, "without you, I would never have met Nikki and you've now
completed my beautiful family. Thank you from the bottom of my
heart."
"That's better," laughed their father.
He went over to kiss his sister, Kylie and his nephew on their
foreheads before returning to Nikki and his daughters.
And as he bent down to kiss each of them in turn, he knew that he
really was the luckiest man in the world.
