"Happy Mother's Day, dweeb!"
That was what Ted heard before he was shoved to the sidewalk. His bag
fell open and a pink and white card tumbled out of it. Inside was a
simple handwritten note: 'To Mom, love Teddy'. The culprits laughed as
their leader smirked.
"Aw, what's wrong Teddy? Hurt yourself?" he asked sarcastically. "Why
don't you go home and ask your mom to kiss it better?"
Ted did his best to blink away tears. "Th-that's not funny, Bill!"
Bill's smirk just widened into a grin. "What are you gonna do about it,
huh? Run crying to Mommy?"
Choking back a sob, Ted scrambled to his feet. He snatched the card up
from the ground and ran as fast as he could down the street. He could
hear the bullies laughing even as he turned the corner. It wasn't fair.
It just wasn't fair.
Three years ago, his mother had passed away. He could still picture the
day in his mind as clearly as if it had happened that morning. The
falling rain, his family all dressed in black, everyone either crying or
in stern, solemn silence. It was the absolute worst day of his life.
Even after all this time, his chest still ached whenever he thought
about it. But he was ten years old now and he was able to ignore it.
Except for this one day. March 31. The day his mother had passed on.
Tears were running down his face. Every year on this one day he became
the target of teasing and mockery from all his classmates. Always the
same insults. How he was the only one in his class without a mother. How
he was different. How he wasn't loved.
He knew it was a lie. He knew his dad loved him, and he loved his dad.
But it still hurt to hear. No matter how hard he tried, the words still
swirled around in his head, still echoed in his ears.
He finally stopped to catch his breath. Wiping his face with his
forearm, he looked at the card.
Dirt stained the delicate pink colours. One of the corners had been
bent. The ink inside had been smeared.
He felt the tears beginning to return. He hated this. He hated his
classmates. He hated those bullies. He hated Mother's Day. He hated
whatever it was that decided his mother had to leave them.
This wouldn't happen if she was still here. If he still had her.
"I wish I still had a mom."
It was a dumb wish. A selfish wish. He knew he'd never get his mother
back. But somehow just saying it made him feel a bit better, if only a
little.
He hung his head, sniffling as he began to make his way home.
Behind him, a pink wisp zipped across the sky.

Stan sighed as he stood at the sink, mindlessly cleaning the dishes. He
glanced at the clock. Not long now. Not long before his son came through
the door, eyes red and cheeks wet after another day of bullying.
He couldn't stand it. Nothing hurt him more than seeing Ted like that.
He'd tried speaking to school, but nothing came of it. He tried speaking
to the other kid's parents, but they didn't care. He even tried walking
his son home from school, but all that did was make the bullying worse.
He hated this. He hated seeing his son so miserable. He hated being the
only one that cared about him. And he hated being so powerless to do
anything about it.
He placed the last dish in the holder and let out another sigh.
"I wish I could make him feel better."
Out of the corner of his eye, Stan saw something pink shoot past him. He
turned around to follow it, but it zipped out of sight. He frowned and
turned again, and once again it was gone. He kept turning in place,
spinning around and around to try and catch the strange pink thing, but
it was always on the move. Never sitting still long enough for him to
get more than a split-second glimpse of it. So he turned around, and
around, and around.
He didn't even notice the pink dust that was quickly starting to spin
around him. Coating him. Changing him.

Ted finally reached his house. He opened the door and tossed his bookbag
to the side.
"I'm home, Dad," he called out. A tapping noise caught his attention as
his father stepped out into the hall to greet him.
"Welcome home, sweetie!" Stan said with a smile on his painted lips.
Ted's jaw dropped.
The tapping came from the white heeled pumps on his feet, clicking on
the hardwood floors with every step. His smooth, freshly-waxed legs were
clad in a pair of sheer skin-tone pantyhose, leading up to and under his
knee-length skirt. Said skirt was part of a red and white polka-dotted
dress. The sleeveless halter-style neckline exposed both Stan's
shoulders and the plastic tops of his breast forms, as the lower half
clung to pads on his hips. Over the dress he wore a frilly white
pinafore, stained with batter and chocolate. A simple gold bracelet
adorned each wrist, while his nails were expertly manicured and painted
a shiny red to match his dress. A string of pearls hugged his neck, just
below his Adam's apple and just above his cleavage. Heavy-yet-tasteful
makeup coated the man's face, utterly failing to hide his masculinity
and in some places even seemed to emphasise it. His short, neatly-
trimmed brown hair was completely replaced with a blonde beehive up-do.
"D-Dad!?" Ted said, shocked at the crossdresser that stood before him.
Stan gave a soft giggle in his deep voice.
"Dad? Come now dear, do I look like a Dad? I'm your Mom, silly!" he
said, before he turned and minced into the house. "Now come in! I have a
batch of cookies waiting, and they won't eat themselves!"
Ted was so confused. What had gotten into his father? He'd never done or
said anything like this before. What could've...
He paused. It couldn't have been... no way.
He slowly followed his mother-garbed-father into the house. Stan hummed
to himself as he brushed a baking tray of chocolate-chip cookies onto a
plate. Glancing over at his son, Stan smiled and gestured to them.
"Well? Dig in! Hurry while they're still warm!"
"Um... thanks..." Ted hesitantly took one. Sure enough, it still felt
warm in his fingers. He looked back at his father, who had sashayed into
the kitchen to put his baking utensils away. He gulped, placed the
cookie back down and followed Stan.
"Hey, Da... I mean, Mom?"
Stan turned to look at his son. Ted reached into his bag and took out
the battered card.
"I... um... I-I dropped it, so I'm sorry it's not... um... h-here." He
pushed the card forward, refusing to meet his father-mother's eyes.
Stan took the card, flipping it open and reading the words inside. He
looked at his son and couldn't help but give him a warm smile.
"Oh Teddy darling...!" He squatted down to the boy's level and pulled
him into a tight hug. He gave Ted a firm kiss, leaving a red outline of
lipstick on his cheek. "I love it! Thank you so much!"
Ted couldn't help but start to cry again. He wrapped his arms around
Stan's neck to return the hug, burying his face in his father-mother's
shoulder.
"I-I love you, Mom..."
"I love you too, son."
Outside, a little pink wisp watched through the window. She giggled
softly, silently congratulating herself on a job well done. Sure, it was
just for the day... but the little guy clearly needed it.
"Happy Mother's Day, Teddy," the fairy whispered, before flying off.
