this was a subject that she was all too familiar with. "I sometimes
wonder if this was one of the reasons that people got married at much
younger ages than they do now."
Cheryl didn't hesitate to fire back. "Yeah and back then women didn't
have rights, there was no abortion, no legalized birth control, very few
women had education or a job with career potential. I say no thanks to
the puritan standards, and as you have pointed out the hypocritical
standards, of the church. I will gladly choose to be a sinner and enjoy
life."
"I didn't say that the church is hypocritical. The church has been
consistent. It is the people in the church who have been inconsistent,"
Beth answered her sister's sharp rebuttal. "You said you would rather
be happy. Are you truly happy?"
Cheryl didn't answer, and simply said, "Good night I am tired we will
talk again."

Before her conversation with Cheryl she was leaning towards to having
sex with Aaron as soon as they were both back in Tallahassee. Cheryl,
unintentionally, had had made a good point and now Beth was having
second thoughts. She wondered how do you justify sex outside of
marriage when you are a Christian?
If Beth had learned anything from her time as Ken it was that sin brings
consequences, eventually. You cannot justify doing the wrong thing.
The reason she was living as Beth and not Ken was because as Ken he had
lived life carelessly, spending money he did not have, then he stole
money to pay for his debts. Ken had no impulse control. He just thought
about the moment and did what pleased him.
In the two years as Beth she was hardly impulsive at all. Beth seldom
bought things on impulse. She thought about her actions and how they
would affect others.
How would having sex with Aaron now benefit her or Aaron? To quote
Carol King "would this be a lasting treasure or just a moments
pleasure?" Would sex benefit Aaron. His goal was to earn his Business
degree, go to seminary and use his business degree and seminary degrees
and be a successful pastor. What if she and Aaron became sexually
active and she became pregnant, what would that do to Aaron's career?
How many other people would be affected by their actions? Could they
still be an affective witness if people knew they were having sex
outside of marriage?
Beth was convinced that Aaron was called to be a pastor and to shepherd
a flock, and to provide spiritual guidance. If Aaron's career was
derailed before it got started, how many people would never receive help
because Aaron was not there? Beth thought about her own role. Since
her conversion, each day had taught her that her role was to be
supportive. She found her calling in not just the traditional verses
about wives and mothers but also in the 6th chapter of Acts. Her goal
was to take care of others to care for others, so that those who are
called can focus on teaching and preaching the Word of God.
If Beth was still Ken and a guy he would not think of any of these
things. He would only care about trying to screw whatever girl he was
with and not consider the potential consequences.
Beth knew full well that Aaron was a man and he has the same drives that
Ken used to have. Beth knew she would have to be the strong one to
protect both her purity and the purity of Aaron and Beth as a couple.
