(Re)Meet The Parents
Vacation seem to come to an end much too quickly for both Aaron and Beth
and their families. Soon they were back at school and getting ready for
the spring semester.
For Beth there was one welcome change in this new semester. Her
football kicking skills had won her a scholarship and this meant she no
longer needed to work and she was happy to leave her job with the State
behind.
This free time gave her an unexpected opportunity, spending more time
with her dad. Her dad being a college professor was always aware of the
old maxim for college professors, "publish or perish". He was now
working on a new book. He needed someone to help with research and
editing. He needed someone that he knew well and who he could trust and
no one better fit this role than his daughter Beth.
Beth welcomed the opportunity to spend additional time with her father.
They would spend 10 hours a week working together. This work time was
sprinkled with time to talk about a wide variety of subjects. For Beth
this was a treasured time that helped her getting to know her dad.
Bill Campbell was also getting to know his daughter. One thing that he
was learning was that his daughter's relationship with Aaron was
serious. And he decided he needed to spend time with and get to know his
potential future son-in law better.
Bill invited Aaron out once a week for lunch. Aaron wisely accepted.
At first, he was intimidated by Dr. Campbell. This was nothing new,
after all most men are somewhat intimidated by their future father-in-
laws. Over time Aaron saw and accepted that Beth's dad loved her, and
always would. He also made it clear that he was very protective of his
daughter and no one had better harm her. Aaron came to respect and fear
Beth's dad.

Before long Valentine's Day arrived. Ken used to dread this day. He
sometimes dreaded it because he hated the idea that he had to go the
extra mile to please the girl that he was dating at the time. The real
reason he dreaded Valentine's Day was because most V-Day he was alone.
Beth had someone and she was looking forward to (expecting was more
accurate) Aaron making this a special day. He did not disappoint.
He found a family from church that was willing to open up their home and
let him use their kitchen. Aaron made Beth a wonderful meal of grilled
shrimp and shrimp scampi. And he attempted to make a cake. The cake did
not turn out so well. But he decided to go with it because he had no
choice.
His hostess saw the cake and took pity on him and baked a new one.
After dinner Aaron was surprised when he uncovered the perfect chocolate
cake.
Aaron presented his beautiful girlfriend with flowers and a homemade
jewelry box. Inside the case there was a necklace with the Cross, FSU
crest, and a football. Also, in the box there was a promise ring that
Beth put on her right hand.

Valentine's Day was able to be enjoyed without the pressure of sex.
Aaron and Beth had discussed their relationship and sex upon their
return to school. Beth shared with Aaron her conversation with Cheryl
and her after conversation thoughts about sex and how it would affect
their relationship long term.
Aaron reluctantly agreed. Admittedly he had been hoping that this
semester he and Beth would consummate their relationship. He had to
admit that Beth's arguments were right and valid.
Aaron and Beth also agreed to seek a mentor from church. They found a
married couple, Justin and Rachel, who were 10 years older than them.
They were far enough removed from college life to offer a fresh
perspective but close to enough to college age to remember the struggles
of being young and in love.
One of the suggestions that Justin and Rachel made was for Beth to no
longer go to the fraternity house. Aaron did not like this suggestion.
But he knew it was for the best.

Very shortly after Valentine's Day it was Aaron's birthday. Beth wanted
to make this a special day for Aaron. And she did, sort of. She was
able to get him a round of golf at her family's country club. She also
gave him the complete volumes of CS Lewis, and made him a homemade
Italian five course meal in her mom's kitchen. To Beth's regret she
couldn't do this on Aaron's birthday, she had to celebrate his birthday
a couple of days early.
His family drove down from Charleston to celebrate Aaron's day. Beth
reluctantly gave Aaron some alone time with his family. Aaron went
along with this idea only because his mom agreed to let Beth join for
most of the family celebrations.
One would expect Beth to be nervous about meeting her boyfriend's
mother, but she was not worried. She had met Martha Dye many times
before. Martha would usually visit Aaron at least once a semester.
Whenever she visited Aaron she was always nice to Ken. She would invite
him out to eat with the family, she would always give him baked treats,
she treated Ken as another son. Ken appreciated Mrs. Dye's generosity
and caring.
It didn't take Beth long to realize that she was meeting a very
different Martha Dye. Gone was the friendliness and warmth that she
knew as Ken. She was meeting a Martha that saw this young woman as a
threat.
Martha put on her Charleston charm. She greeted Beth by saying, "It is a
delight to meet you. How long will we have the pleasure of your
company?" By now Beth was fluent in girl speak and she knew what Martha
Dye was really saying was "I am not happy about meeting you. How long
until you leave before your carriage turns back into a pumpkin?". Beth
begin to suspect maybe there is something to this whole mother/son crap.
To Beth the visit seemed like a remake of the movie "Meet the Parents",
but with a feminine twist. When Beth shared that she was majoring in
Social Work, Martha replied "Social Work is a major for girls who are
not smart or just hoping to find a husband. I am sure neither applies
to you."
Over dinner Martha bragged how Aaron could trace his family lineage 300
years to some of Charleston's founding families. Beth felt a chill go
up her spine when Martha asked her "how about your family, how many
generations have they been in Tallahassee have they been involved in
State politics? Beth meekly replied that her family moved to
Tallahassee when she was young and that her dad was a college professor
and that her mom was a stay at home mom, and now does volunteer work at
the church and community."
Martha replied with a touch of sarcasm, "That's nice," and rolled her
eyes.
During the after dinner conversation Martha "complimented" Beth telling
her that she dressed very well for the daughter of a college professor.
Beth had no trouble translating Martha's girl speak. "Your rags might do
for the daughter of a poor college professor, but they would never do
for someone who wants to be the wife of a man who comes from one of
Charleston's founding families."
Beth surmised that Martha Dye would be happier if she wasn't around. She
told Aaron that she wanted him to have some quality time with his family
and she would do the same with her family. Beth drove back to the Chi
Omega house and wondered if her relationship with Aaron would survive
his mother.
