Aaron and Beth were settled into their own apartment. For Beth the hard part
about living with Aaron was pretending to be surprised by Aaron's
idiosyncrasies. She had lived with Aaron previously as Ken. Prior to moving
in with Aaron, she wondered if he still did the same annoying habit of
setting his alarm for 5:30 am, then hit the snooze every to minutes for the
next hour. Beth was convinced that she could break Aaron of his habits,

Adjusting to each other's quirks in their personalities was just one of the
things that Aaron and Beth had to adjust to. Before living together as
husband and wife their sex life was irregular. Now that they were living
together as a married couple, they were having sex on a more regular basis.
Beth felt it was time to bring Aaron in on her plan for birth control.
Ken never really thought much about birth control. One reason he didn't
think about it was because the chance of him having a date and having sex
with a girl was pretty slim. He also had the typical male attitude that it
was the girl's responsibility to take care of birth control. And it was not
unexpected that Aaron would have the same attitude about birth control.
Aaron did have the same attitude as Ken about birth control. Now Ken was
Beth. She was having sex regularly and she could pregnant which meant that
"Ken's" view of birth control had changed.
She explained to Aaron "Humanae Vitae." Aaron liked the fact that he
wouldn't have to use a condom, but he didn't like that he would have to plan
love making around Beth's cycle. But he did like the faith component and he
knew that the woman he loved embraced this method and he would also.
There's an old joke, "What do you call girls who use the rhythm method?
Mothers!" This is one of the reasons that this method of birth control is
not very popular. The rhythm method requires a lot of discipline-which cuts
into spontaneity, and most women's cycles are not regular, so it is hard to
pinpoint the exact days of ovulation.
Unfortunately for Beth she fell into the latter category. When she ate not
only all of her steak and bake potato, plus a good portion of Aaron's steak
and bake potato, she figured that she was just hungry. When the spaghetti
from her favorite Italian restaurant made her sick, she blamed it on a
change in sauce. When it was colder than normal in Tallahassee (50 degrees)
she claimed it was too hot and demanded that the AC be lowered. She and

Aaron, in a moment of stupidity, said you have been very emotional lately.
It was only after that comment, when she threw the pizza at him, went to the
bedroom, and called Aaron many names, that she suspected that she might be
pregnant. She sent Aaron to the store to get a pregnancy test. Aaron was
only too happy to get out and he turned what should have been a 10-minute
trip into an hour errand. Just past midnight on Mothers Day, ironically,
the First Response pregnancy test showed two pink lines and Beth realized
that next Mother's Day she would be celebrating it as a mother.
Beth was overjoyed at being pregnant. She was happy that she and Aaron were
starting their family. She was experiencing a joy and happiness that she
would have never known as Ken. Each day was a journey and adventure into
motherhood, a venture that on somedays seem to fly by and other days it
seemed to crawl.
Her pregnancy wasn't all joy, most of it was joy. For example, Beth was
horrified to realize she would be five months pregnant at her wedding. She
was already married, and this was going to be the celebration wedding WITH
PICTURES! She realized that for the rest of her life when she and others
looked at her wedding pictures, she would always see her baby bump in her
wedding gown.
Moving was another problem with her pregnancy. Beth would be well into her
fifth month when she and Aaron moved to Colorado. Aaron reassured her that
he would take care of anything, she only had to take care of herself and the
baby.
Beth wasn't the only one who was concerned about having her baby in
Colorado. Both moms, hers and Aarons, pleaded with her to have the baby in
Tallahassee. This baby would be the first grandchild for both families.
Both future grandmothers wanted to be present for every moment, or for as
many moments as possible. In the end Beth made it clear that her husband's
place will be in Colorado, and her place is with her husband. She told both
Anne and Martha that they wanted both of them to be part of the baby's life
and they look forward to their visits to Colorado to spend time their
grandchild.

Beth's pregnancy came at a time when she and Aaron were planning on going to
Disney World for a week. They were looking forward to staying at the
Wilderness Lodge. It was close enough to the park amenities, but far enough
away to enjoy some peaceful down times also. Fortunately, her pregnancy
wasn't too far advanced. She had just enough of a baby bump that it was
visible and cute, and people would definitely know that she was pregnant.
She would be able to enjoy most of the parks, but she would have to skip
Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain and the other rollercoasters at the parks.
Aaron wanted to ride Space Mountain, but he didn't want to leave Beth. It
was only after Beth had urged him several times that he decided to ride
Space Mountain without her. Beth told him not worry, she would take this
opportunity to ride It's a Small World, visit some shops, and do some people
watching.
It's A Small World was another reminder of how much different her current
life was from her former life. Ken, like most guys hated It's a Small
World. Beth had dragged Aaron onto the ride a couple of days ago. She
enjoyed the music, the bright colors, the details of the different dolls

that you could sing and hum and after leaving the ride. It was a soothing
17-minute ride for Beth.
When she was Ken, she found all of that distracting, boring, and annoying-

she was Ken and he was 9 years old and his mom made him ride the attraction.
As she waited in line she was thinking back to that day and other trips that
she had taken to Disney World with Ken's family.
Since Beth was by herself the ride operators directed her to join the party
in the first row. She entered the boat without noticing the other family in
the row. A few seconds after the boat started on its journey around "the
world" Beth turned to looked at the dolls on the left side of the boat, and
she almost went into shock. She was sitting next to Ken's mother.
Beth couldn't believe it. Her reaction looked she had seen a ghost. She
tried to regain composure before Ken's mom saw her. It was too late. She
turned to Beth and asked, "Are you ok?"
"Yes. Sorry for alarming you. My mind is playing tricks on me. I thought I
saw something that startled me." Nothing else was said between the two women
for the next few minutes. Sometimes she would look at her old mother, and
sometimes she would look at Beth. And a couple of times they turned to see
that the other one was looking at them and they quickly looked somewhere
else." The 17-minute ride seemed to last 17 hours.
Beth had wanted this for some time, now that she had the opportunity that
she had prayed for, she wasn't sure what to do with it. The ride was over
and she saw Ken's mom leave the boat and go outside. She thought that she
had lost her only chance to have closure with Ken's family, or maybe that
was all the closure she was allowed to have.
As she walked out of the darkness of "It's a Small World" and into the
brightness of the hot Florida sun that covered the Magic Kingdom she was
temporarily blinded as her eyes adjusted to the sunlight. A few seconds
later her eyes adjusted, and she was looking into the face of Ken's mother,
she almost walked into her.
"Hi, my name is Carol. I feel like we have met before and that I know you.
I think you feel the same way, which is why you kept looking at me during
the It's A Small World Ride."
"Hi, I am Beth Dye. Would you like to talk and see how we might know each
other? If you don't mind could we sit down and chat?"
Carol spoke first. "I see you have a wedding band and that you're pregnant.
I am guessing Dye is your married name. What is your maiden name?"
Beth hesitated. She wondered if she should give her maiden name or Ken's
last name. If she said Ken's last name that might create some problems.
She went with her maiden name. "I was a Campbell"
"I don't know any Campbells. But there is something about your eyes that
makes me think that I know you from somewhere."
"Maybe we don't know each other, but I would like to keep talking with you.
Tell me about you. Married? Children? What do you do?
"We live in Satellite Beach. I have two children, two sons."
"What about your husband?"
"He has his own State Farm Insurance Agency."
Beth took all of this in. Her family was definitely living a better life
without her. Because her mom didn't get pregnant with her in her early
twenties, she and her dad finished college. They had careers, lived in a
nicer place. She was happy for them.
On the other hand, her family was happier and had a better life without her.
Was Ken the cause of his family's unhappiness? For a few minutes she felt
guilty for her family's misfortunes. Then, again Ken's parents were the ones
who got pregnant with him. They made the choices that affected their
family. But...
They did their best. It was time to let go and forgive. Her life was
better, and so was her family. In her heart she offered her forgiveness to
Carol.
They chatted for another hour. Aaron texted Beth after he got off of Space
Mountain. She told him to ride it again, she was having a wonderful
conversation with a lady she met on It's A Small World.
Eventually Beth knew it was time to go. "I enjoyed this chat. It has been a
pleasure meeting you."
"I know we couldn't figure out how we might know each other. Give me your
email address and I will email you if I ever figure it out." Carol said with
a smile and laugh. Carol then added, "You know if I had a daughter, I would
like to think she might have been like you"
"Thank you. Would it be inappropriate to give you a hug?"
"I would like that very much. Wish you the best with your new baby, and
please send me some baby pictures. With the way my two sons are about
relationships, your baby might be as close as I get to being a grandmother."
Beth hugged Carol. As she hugged her, she remembered all of the other times
she wished Carol had hugged Ken this way. Beth didn't want to let go. But
she reluctantly ended the hug and said good-bye."
As they parted ways, Beth took one last look at Carol. She felt happy and
at peace knowing that all members of her former family were having wonderful
lives.
