Thomas First Visit
Thomas had told Beth that he could visit her five times. But he never
said how he would visit. Did she need to be somewhere secluded? Were
there certain times that he could visit? Would others see Thomas when
he was talking to Beth? Beth knew none of these answers. She decided
to play it safe and would call for Thomas on Friday night when she was
going to the home of a couple from church, to take care of their plants
and pets. Beth planned on calling Thomas when she was alone at the
house.
Friday night arrived and Beth stuck to her plan. She called out to
Thomas not knowing exactly how this would work. Seconds after her plea
Thomas appeared in the living room of the house. Thomas appeared with a
very authoritative greeting of hello. Thomas asked Beth how she was
adjusting to the change.
Beth answered cheerfully, "It has been relatively smooth. I don't know
how I know all the things that I do about the Old Beth, but it has
helped tremendously having that knowledge. I have been able to avoid

Thomas replied sternly, "We didn't do that for you. We did it for
Beth's family and friends. Imagine how they would have felt and reacted
if Beth suddenly didn't know who they were or anything about them. We
wanted to make sure that they had no knowledge of what happened to the
Old Beth. You are a beneficiary of this generosity."
"What does that mean?" asked Beth with some irritation.
"Do not forget that you are in Beth's body because you did wrong. You
were granted grace and mercy so that you might help others, especially
in this case Beth and her family. You saved Beth's physical life which
spared her family and friends of having to experience her traumatic
death. Because you agreed to do this you were spared the earthly
consequences of your sin and crimes that you committed as Ken"
Beth meekly replied, "Thank you for this gift and second chance at life.
I will not waste this opportunity." Beth was silent for a few minutes
while she took in everything that Thomas had said. Then with humility,
she said to Thomas, "I have some questions that I hope you will help me
with."
"Proceed," said Thomas.
"I have been reading all of Beth's old text, emails, social media
postings and a journal that I had found. I get a sense that she really
wasn't happy with her life. Is that true?" was Beth's first question.
"That is true," Thomas replied. "Old Beth was a very nice young woman
full of compassion and love. She loved to please others. Usually, this
trait is an asset to most people. In Beth's case, she needed a little
skepticism. She needed to realize that not everyone can be trusted and
some people can use your kindness to harm you."
"I'm starting to realize that. It looks like everyone was telling her
how he should live her life, and she reluctantly went along with
whatever they wanted," Beth answered. She then added, "And this brings
me to my next question."
"What is that?" asked Thomas.
"Can I make changes in her life?" she asked.
"We have covered this before, but I will cover it again. Yes, you can
make changes in the way Beth was living her life. You can make any
changes you wish. But, again I cautioned against making too many
changes, especially in the beginning and too radical changes in her/your
life. What kind of changes were you thinking of making?" Thomas asked
Beth.
"For starters, I wish to change my major to something that has a better
future, seek a sorority leadership position, start being on time, get
better organized, and dump Brad. I would like to get rid of Brad before
my parent's dinner. Fortunately, he goes to college in Virginia and I
have not had to deal with him face to face this week." Beth replied to
Thomas with confidence.
"Don't you think that is a lot of changes, especially after only one
week in Beth's body?" Thomas asked in a way that indicated his
disproval.
"No, I don't. I am just getting started," Beth answered with confidence
that bordered on arrogance. "What is wrong with making all of these
changes?"
Thomas took a different approach to answering her questions. "Let's
look at those changes one at a time. Why do you feel the need to change
your major?"
"What am I going to do with a psychology degree? My mom is right I need
to have a serious major, a major where I can make lots of money. I
don't want to ever be in the same shape financially that I was in as
Ken," said Beth.
"It's too late change you major this semester. Why not take some time
and learn more this major and see how you could use it in your life?
You can apply some better study habits and raise your GPA and see what
differences that would make in your education and viewpoint," Thomas
replied with a smile. "Tell me why do you want a sorority leadership
position?"
"I was a leader in the fraternity. I enjoyed being in leadership and I
was very good at it," Beth answered. "I would like to lead the
sorority. I think it would be interesting to have led both a fraternity
and a sorority. How many people can claim they have done that-of course
I can tell no one."
Thomas looked at Beth and asked her, "How did it work out when you led a
fraternity?" Without waiting for an answer Thomas added, "You forgot
your values, you were motivated by power, greed, and gave into the
temptation to commit financial crimes."
Thomas could tell these were tough words for Beth to hear. With some
compassion, he added, "Why don't you just focus on being a good sorority
member. That would be an improvement over the old Beth. This will also
give you a chance to find out what your role should be and an
opportunity to get to know the other girls in the house."
Beth accepted this answer and then asked, "Can I improve my organization
and punctuality skills at least?"
"That would be a great idea, and many people will appreciate that," said
Thomas. "Now let's talk about Brad."
"What about Brad?" Beth asked.
"You are right. It's probably not a good idea to have him come to your
parent's anniversary dinner. You are not ready to deal with him in
person. I will make sure that Brad is unable to come. In the meantime,
get to know him before you make any decisions about your relationship."
Said Thomas.
"Are you going to hurt him?" asked Beth.
"I assure you he will not be harmed," Thomas said. "Do you have any
more questions?"
"Yes, one more. When I call for you do I need to be isolated like I am
tonight? Will other people see and hear you?" Beth asked.
"It is best that when I come to visit you are alone. Others will not
see or hear me, but they will see you talking to an invisible person."
"Beth, it is time to say good-bye. You are doing well for your first
week. Remember you have only four more visits left." As soon as Thomas
had finished saying those words he was gone.
