Kristen Ivarsdottir had a practically perfect life. She and her
boyfriend of several years, Karl Swenson were graduate students at the
University of Minnesota, were actually deeply in love and living
together, and possessed of power the likes of which no human had ever
possessed. They had both been inbued by a spark of energy from the
Aesir, the Gods of their Scandinavian ancestors and were protectors of
Midgard (Earth) and the emissaries of Asgard on their world. Kristen was
known as 'Valkyrie', as she had been blessed by Freyja, while Karl was
'Thunderer' as he was the herald of Thor himself. Together they had
vanquished multiple foes dispatched by Loki or Hela, or even Jotuns
(giants) or Svartalfs (dark elves) sent to cause distruction. So far
they had been quite successful.
Both of them worked as graduate assistants, Kristen in Scandinavian
Languages, and Karl in Athletic Training and Physical Therapy. Not
having to hold down regular nine to five jobs made it easy for them to
spring into action as their alter-egos when necessary. They were in
their apartment preparing for dinner and listening to a CD called 'Odin
Owns Ye All' from a Viking Metal band called Einherjar and then a session
in the bedroom together when their lives changed once again, as though
their previous encounters weren't enough. A woman wearing a helmet
similar to Kristens (only with larger wings) and holding a spear appeared
in their abode, and addressed them. This was not good. Both of them
recognized her as an actual Valkyrie, one of the servants of Freyja,
Kristen's patron. They also served all the Aesir as the choosers of the
slain, those warriors who died bravely, who were then transported back to
Odin's hall, Valhalla for feasting and fighting on the fields, in
preparation for Ragnarok (also known as Gotterdamerung or the Twilight of
the Gods). As part of this function, the women served as messengers to
specially chosen humans such as Kristen and Karl. Which explained why
she was there in the pair's apartment.
The valkyrie ordered them to change into their alter egos, and prepare to
leave. Their presence was required in Asgard by no less a person than
Odin the Alfather himself. They had noticed that the last few winters had
been increasingly colder, and according to the Eddas, that was a sign of
the Norse end times, which really had nothing to do with the Krisjian
one. Theirs involved the turning of the wheel of destiny to a new age,
whereby all would begin again. According to the Prophecy of the Seeress
(Voluspa), a pair of humans would be the beginning of a new Midgard, and
some of the children of the Aesir would become the new Gods in a reborn
Asgard. No one knew who the pair of humans would be, but the two were
summoned to join the hordes of Asgard, to fight against the assembled
enemies of the Gods. Loki would break free of his bonds and captain a
ship of certain evil dead. His daughter Hela would lead the other dead
in a direct assault, joined by Fenris the wolf and son of Loki who would
also break his bonds, while Jormangandr the Midgard Serpent (also a son
of loki) would be freed from the sea. Joining them would be the Jotuns
and Swartalfs, plus any other enemies that Loki could enlist. The
Einherjer (dead warriors resident in Valhalla, Odin's Hall) and those
resident in Freyja's hall would be the primary forces opposing them. The
Aesir, Vanir and Lossaralfs (Light Elves) would also serve. This would
be the final battle between good and evil, with the eternal future in the
balance.
The two were separated for a time, as they were dedicated to two
different Gods. Kristen naturally joined those forces fighting with
Freyja. Due to her status as a champion, she was placed in a position of
honor, fighting with the Valkyries, who for this battle (the last in this
age!) would be serving as Freyja's personal guard. She drew her sword,
with a pair of hand axes at her belt, and pulled her shield closer to her
body. They received word from Heimdall, the guardian of the rainbow
bridge Bifrost that the armies of the dead were approaching. She did not
expect to survive this battle, but she knew she would go down fighting
for the forces of good, and preventing those of evil from populating the
new earth that would rise out of the old. She thought back to that
fateful encounter in the cave several years ago, when that scrawny, nerdy
boy had accepted Freyja's offer to become her earthly champion, though
with the price of becoming a woman. To be honest, she greatly enjoyed
her life as a female, much more than she had as a boy. She found that she
enjoyed wearing skirts and heels over sexy lingerie, applying makeup and
attracting glances from the guys of her acquaintance. Especially from
her fianc?, Karl Swenson, who was currently in a different part of
Asgard's army. She wished that if they were going to meet their ends,
they could do it together.
Karl, AKA the Thunderer was having similar thoughts. He was deeply in
love with Kristen, and was concerned for her in the coming confrontation,
though he knew she was as much a warrior as he was, maybe more. He was
very happy over the fact that in order to receive her power, she had been
required to become female, and that said female was quite beautiful and
madly in love with him. Their years together had been wonderful, and
they had looked forward to spending many more together, and eventually
having children, though that would force Kristen to temporarily retire
from her role as Valkyrie. But they had talked about it, and she had
decided that it would be worth it, and was prepared to do just that. But
then this came. And so he was in the front ranks of a fighting legion
dedicted to and commanded by Thor, his patron. The rest of the Aesir
were scattered around the field with their own forces, plus many of their
children were grown and armed for battle. This was going to be like
nothing the universe had ever seen, nor would it ever again. At least
not until the Krisjian version of the end of the world occurred,
Armageddon. But he didn't see how that could happen-if things were going
to come to a head now, how could it happen for a different religion at
some other time? But he didn't have time to think about that-the enemy
was beginning to cross the bridge. Heimdall had retreated after locking
the gates and joined his brethren in the front line of the assembled
forces. He had a special grudge with Loki, and hoped to be the one to
defeat him in single combat. Karl gripped his Warhammer and shield,
ensured his sword and hand ax were in his belt, and waited the last few
moments before the battle began.
The various major evil entities were in the van of the attacking army,
and they and their dedicated foes advanced towards each other. Fenris
had broken his magical bonds, and joined battle with Odin the Allfather,
killing him. Vithar, Odins son advanced upon the wolf and slew him in
turn. Frey, who had been deprived of his sword as a bride-price for his
wife Gerda, fell before the fire-giant Surtur. The great God Thor slew
Jormangandr the serpent, but was then slain himself, by the snake's
vomited venom. These gods and more slew and were slain by their mortal
foes in turn.
Kristen and Karl were themselves quite busy. Karl engaged in battle with
a group of jotuns, crushing many skulls with his Warhammer.
Miraculously, he escaped major injury. In the midst of the Valkyries,
Kristen decapitated many of the walking dead, putting them out of action.
The battle raged on for hours, with millions on both sides falling. As
night fell, most of the last of the combatants fell-jotuns, gods, heroes,
dark elves and the dead. The dead included all of the evil ones, and the
metaphysical energies spread throughout the branches of the World Tree-
the source of all life, especially to Midgard-also known as the human
universe and especially Earth, destroying pretty much everything.
Most of the combatants fell-that had been prophesied. But not all. A
few of the forces of light were left. The sons of Thor were alive, and
recovered their father's hammer Mjollnir. With this they would defend
the new creation as the wheel turned. Also two champions were still
alive-Karl the Thunderer and Kristen the Valkyrie. The prophecy was
fulfilled-the former male who had accepted the mantle of guardian at the
price of his masculinity was to become the mother of the new human race,
hopefully a better one.
