‘I am concerned that you are finding it difficult to discharge your obligations!’
Candace Bergman looked up from the document in her delicate hands to examine the young man standing before her.

William fought the crushing wave of anxiety that almost overwhelmed him and struggled for an answer. However, it appeared the woman who held so much power of him did not even require an answer.
Ms Bergman stood up and walked to the large window behind her desk. This window did not offer an expensive view of upper class real estate, prized by other people of wealth. No, this window looked down on the busy floor of the large department store owned by Candace Bergman!
Bergmans catered for the rich and offered only items from the most exclusive labels! You could purchase anything from Bergmans – if you had the money!
There were only three Bergman stores – London, New York and Berlin. All exclusive and all very, very expensive!
William Jones nervously waited. He could only wait; there was nothing else for him to do.
There was no doubt he felt small and inadequate in such a salubrious office. The desk was large and quite old. It was said a Pope had once owned the cherry panelled desk with its ornate drawers and shelves. Some of the employees of Bergmans whispered that Ms Bergman had more power and wealth than any Pope, past or present!
As usual, Ms Candace Bergman was the epitome of elegance. She wore a pencil line skirt that touched the bottom of each nylon sheathed knees. That skirt and matching jacket was designed specially for Candace by the Italian designer Moralldo. No other woman in the world could wear it until Candace Bergman had tired of it. The Moralldo new season line was then released to the public, only through Bergmans, of course, and society dames rushed to order it so, in their mind’s eye, they could look as beautiful and elegant as Candace Bergman. The skirt alone would cost a mere thirty five thousand dollars as only one outfit was made in each size.
Candace’s eyes narrowed as she studied the performance of the shop assistants on the sparkling floor beneath her. They all knew she was above them and that she was prone to study them at any time.
The shop assistants were all blonde and female. Every new assistant progressed through stringent testing before being allowed to serve on the floor. The first time they were permitted to walk onto the gleaming marble floors, they were told, ‘Ms Bergman’s office is directly above us and she often looks down. Whatever you do, never, ever look up! Never!’
William fought the urge to loosen his shirt collar as he waited for Ms Bergman to turn.
Finally, she did and pressed a button on her desk.
The disembodied voice of her personal assistant immediately sounded from the intercom.
‘Yes, Ms Bergman.’
‘Do we have a new girl in the perfumery, Elaine?’
There was a small pause and then, ‘yes, Ms Bergman. Is there a problem?’
‘She’s spraying all customers with the new Dior! Please have her be more selective.’
‘Of course, Ms Bergman. I’ll handle it immediately!’
Candace looked up at William and smiled thinly.
She was, William thought, a beautiful woman even though she was old.
As William was only twenty four years of age, he thought that thirty eight was old!
Candace Bergman had the three elements of an extremely potent and lethal concoction – beauty, wealth and intelligence. What’s more, she also had a complete lack of morals. Morality was for the poor!
‘Do you understand what I am saying, William?’
‘Ah, no, not really, Ms Berg?’
‘You have broken the contract, the contract you willingly entered into.’
‘I know, Ms Bergman,’ he said miserably, ‘but work is difficult to find?’
‘I’m sure you have an excuse for everything you do in your sad life, William, but I really do not wish to hear all the boring details.’
She sat down behind the desk and frowned as she read the contract.
‘You damaged my garden wall, did you not?’
William had ?borrowed? his step-father’s car and after a few drinks had lost control on the wet streets. He had been visiting Robyn, a girl he had met at a club, (apparently, she came from a very wealthy family).
William had clumsily kissed her and then she had smilingly pushed him away with the lingering promise of more to come. Driving home in his step-father’s car, cock hard in his faded blue jeans and distracted by the scent of Robyn’s perfume and the touch of her lips, the car had skidded on the slippery, winding road.
‘You rammed the wall, did you not?’
‘Yes, Ms Bergman,’ he said miserably.
‘The quotes I compiled for the repairs indicated a sum of five hundred dollars. You agreed to pay me that sum and I agreed I would not report you to the police. Is that not correct?’
‘Ah, yes Ms Bergman.’
Why did she have to go over the details again? William knew he was in a tight spot and her aristocratic, plumy British accent accentuated her cold power.
‘You have made just two payments and defaulted on the third.’
‘I’m sorry, Ms Bergman but I don’t have a job?’
‘Spare me details, William. I have your signed confession, I should call the police immediately. By the way, does your step-father know it was you who stole his car?’
William shook his head.
‘I see. Then much will be revealed once the police are aware of your circumstances.’
‘Please, Ms Bergman, please don’t?’
‘I don’t see any other way out, William?’
‘I will do anything?’
That was exactly what Candace wanted to hear but she kept the happy smile of victory from her beautiful face.
‘You may go, William,’ Ms Bergman said calmly, ‘and I will consider my options. I must warn you that, at this stage, I believe informing to authorities to be the only option. Return at 5:00PM for my decision.’
Despondently, William turned and walked over the lush carpet to the door.
‘And William?’
He turned, hopeful she had changed her mind.
‘Yes, Ms Bergman?’
‘Take the time to clean your tie. I find stains on any apparel to be quite disgusting. That will be all, you may go.’
