He ran across the field and caught up just in time to see her pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge. In another moment, down went Allen after her, not once considering how he was to get out. His suspenders caught on a protruding root and, not wanting to lose his chase, he undid them so he could properly enter.
The rabbit hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, a stray root catching Allen's sock and tearing it straight off his left foot. But he continued crawling, his burning curiosity spurning him on like a man possessed. Roots pricked at his arms and tore at his shorts and shirt, popping one of his buttons, but he tried to pay the dirt upon his clothes no heed. The tunnel narrowed and Allen found his hips stuck. It took much tugging, but he began to pull himself through.
With alarm, Allen felt his shorts slide down his hips. He tried to tug them up, but they weren't budging in the narrow space his hips were caught in. He crawled forward just a bit, letting them slide further down his hips. He intended to pull them back up once he had some space, but the moment his pelvis cleared the opening, the rabbit hole dipped so suddenly down that Allen didn't have a moment to think of himself before falling down what seemed to be a very deep well.
