The coach showed up before lunchtime the next day. He had another guy with him, who turned out to be his son. He would be a senior this year, and was the starting halfback. His name was Tim, and we talked for a bit, while our dads set things up.
We worked out for two hours, before everybody was satisfied. I guess I made the team, because coach Nelson said we might win a few games this year. It was harder than yesterday, so I didn't know. When Ann sheepishly admitted it was hers, I smiled. She actually looked scared when I informed her that she was going to go first, and Denise was going to help.
We took a shower, and I washed them. I wouldn't let either one touch me, though. I did the same when we dried off, and led them to bed. Both girls were so nervous that I could feel them shaking. I was too, but they didn't seem to notice.

I found out pretty fast that there was a down side to having my license. Mom and dad decided that I should get as much practice as possible. Every time somebody needed to go to town, I got to play chauffeur. By the time tryouts started, they were confident enough in my ability to trust the girls alone with me.
Denise and Ann had 'tested up', and were trying out for the cheerleading squad. Since that was being done at the football field, we all headed there. When I saw the other guys, I was surprised at how small they were. I knew I had grown some, but wow! I was bigger than the linemen. Some of the trips to town had been for clothes. I had outgrown mine three times. Each time we returned from the cabin, in fact.
Making the team proved to be easier than I thought. In fact, I was the only one trying out for quarterback. That didn't mean I wasn't tested, though. I found out that I was right about one thing. I didn't know squat about football. The coaches were pretty patient about explaining the terms I didn't understand, but I felt pretty stupid when I had to ask about them.
The girls weren't as lucky. Competition for the cheerleading squad was fierce, and all the girls from last year were back. They were offered positions on the junior varsity team, but were going to decline. The J.V. games were played on Tuesday, and they didn't want me to have to drive them. I vetoed that idea.
"I'll have practice", I explained. "so I'll already be there."
That seemed to please them, and they signed up. We were all told that we would need a sports physical to participate, and given some forms for our parents to sign as we left. Leaving took longer than I had planned. What is it about guys and trucks? Half the team had to check it out, before we could get out of there. The other half was checking out the rifle and shotgun in the rack. I caught the 'not so subtle' hints about getting together to hunt, sometime. I acted like I didn't hear them. I knew what their idea of 'hunting' probably entailed.
We had a treat waiting when we got home. The satellite dish had finally been installed, and the television was now operational. At first, I had to fake my enthusiasm. Then the news came on, and I began to like the idea. We didn't even subscribe to the paper. Not that it was a great loss, it wasn't very good. Finding out what was going on in the world was a treat, but not as good as what followed.
