Dave had a habit of checking on the various rooms in the core to see how they were being used and what condition they were in just by occasionally strolling by. Some weeks he checked daily and other weeks perhaps not at all.

Dave teased, “Don’t generalize too much, my darling.” The two kissed softly.
Scarlett set the October issue of Vanity Fair in front of him. She covered up part of the accompanying text naming the young woman on the cover. She asked, “Who’s she?”
Dave glanced over and answered, “That is Felicity Jones. She doesn’t smile enough, but I suppose that’s her British stiff-upper-lip showing through.”
Scarlett looked surprised, “You know her! I’m surprised.”
Dave defended, “I do go to the movies once in a while. I think she’s one of the prettiest actresses in Hollywood, present company excluded. I obviously think YOU are the most gorgeous, most desirable, prettiest, smartest, savviest, most beautiful,...”
“Okay. Okay,” Scarlett interrupted. “I like you, too. Felicity will be arriving midday tomorrow. She’s going to be staying at my house. You are invited to dinner with us tomorrow evening. Just to balance things a little, I also invited Owen.”
Dave asked, “Will two slightly married men overwhelm her sense of propriety?”
Scarlett shrugged. “I never mentioned that any of you were married, although she knows I’m in some kind of strange marriage to you. By the way, she’s staying until next Tuesday. I would love to introduce her to the Circle, but I don’t know how. I think she needs some ‘Outside of Hollywood’ influence in her life. Moreover, and maybe it’s that British think you just mentioned, but I think she’s sexually repressed.”
Dave laughed, “In our dinner conversation, if not over cocktails, I will take care of that, I assure you. You might want to soften the blow ahead of time.”
Friday after work, instead of heading home after coming through the gates at the Circle compound, he turned right onto Perimeter Drive and went down the road to the driveway for Scarlett’s home. He turned the Harley into the drive and parked behind Scarlett’s Range Rover sitting in front of her garage. She loved the car but it looked almost like a night-mission military vehicle.
The day was nice, so Dave left his helmet on the seat of the bike and strolled to the front door. Just as he got there, the door opened and Scarlett was in his arms. Felicity said, “But they range in age from eighteen to in their seventies.”
Dave emphasized, “I happen to love EVERY ONE of them. Once you rise above the construct of ‘one man-one woman’, you find yourself free to explore other interesting arrangements. If you keep loosening up, you learn that the restriction of only feeling love between yourself and someone near your own age also vanishes. Over time you discover that many other restrictions also need not apply.
“We know that many men my age often trade their middle-age wife in for a younger model. I think they miss the mark that they can love both and gain the benefits from both with open and loving relationships. One needs to change their mindset. Once you have that epiphany, why not allow for the possibility of loving people older than yourself, different colors, different belief systems, and so on.”
Dave said, “I’ll paraphrase an expression we use in the Circle. Consenting adults can do whatever they like about love. I choose to love many people.”
Felicity said, “I thought the expression was ‘Consenting adults can do whatever they like about sex’?”
Dave bowed in her direction slightly, “You seem better informed about this place than I realized. Forgive me. I did say, I was paraphrasing. Both statements are true here, and they should be in the outside world – what Scarlett calls ‘Muggleland’.”
Felicity and Scarlett laughed.
Just then the robust door chimes could be heard tolling someone’s arrival. Scarlett hopped up and said, “Oh, that’s probably Owen.”
Dave said, “Oh, yes, my wife’s tattoo artist.”
Felicity looked puzzled and he explained, “You’ll have to read the book another one of my wives wrote about the Circle.”
Felicity pointed to the table beside one of the chaises on the patio and there sat a new copy of Cricket’s book. “I do intend to read it this weekend. Scarlett just gave me the book about an hour ago.”
Scarlett arrived back on the patio with Owen being held snugly by his bare arm that nestled against her breasts. He was urbane and polite, but received a more reserved welcome from Felicity. Only a brief kiss on the cheek from her. He seemed unaffected by her near nudity.
Scarlett asked Felicity to talk about two movie projects she was pursuing. One was entitled The Last Letter from Your Lover, and the other Good Morning, Midnight. She briefly outlined the plot of each film and mentioned the costars, most of who Dave didn’t know, but he noticed the Scarlett reacted to each name in a positive way.
Owen also seemed to be better plugged into the Hollywood scene, in part because he liked to invest in some of the films that had been passed over by the major studios. A few of Owen’s comments led to a ‘who do you know’ discussion for a few minutes that Dave listened to with no little sense of awe between the two of them. During their talk, Scarlett winked at Dave. She knew he wasn’t that up to speed on Hollywood who, what, where, when, and how gossip. She’d always told him to never think he was deficient for lack of that knowledge pool.
Dave was only modestly surprised when Chef Ari appeared in the doorway and announced that dinner was ready whenever the rest of us were. Scarlett led everyone into her dining room. Dave had to smile at the ensemble. Scarlett and Felicity were in monokinis, and looking gorgeous. Every hair on their heads was carefully coiffured, some eye makeup added more appear, and they both had bodies most women would sell their souls for – or men, for that matter.
By contrast, Dave and Owen were in business casual attire: loafers, slacks with a razor crease, and button men’s shirts. They were clean shaven and neither needed a haircut. Dave’s hair was slightly matted from wearing his motorcycle helmet, but that was barely noticeable.
Chef Ari and Tori served the dinner to the four at the large dining room table. Ari wore his white chef’s suit and hat – his toque, and Tori a demure maid’s outfit – more conservative than the usual patio clothing servers wore. Dave gave Tori a wink to indicate that he recognized her and knew about her regular life as a pledge to the Circle and a university student. She just smiled slightly and kept her professional demeanor. When everything was perfect in terms of the meal, the two servers vanished and the four enjoyed a simple shrimp cocktail and lively conversation.
