March 1985, Chicago, Illinois

Rosie said Becky had TRIED to kill herself. That meant Becky was probably still alive, which was a bit of a relief.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I came home from a party and found her on the floor. I couldn’t wake her up and there was a bottle of pills next to her!”

“Where is she now?” I asked.

“The paramedics said they were taking her to MacNeal Hospital on Oak Park Avenue.”

“Did anyone call her parents?” I asked.

“The police are still here. I don’t know.”

I wondered if it was a good idea for me to call them, or to let the police do it. I didn’t really have any information, but then again, the police probably wouldn’t convey too much information, either.

“I’m going to call them, then I’ll probably head to the hospital.”

“I’m going as soon as the police let me,” she said.

I said goodbye and hung up the phone.

“What’s wrong?” Sofia asked, sitting up in bed.

“Becky tried to commit suicide. She took an overdose of something.”

“Oh no! And you’re going to the hospital?”

“Yes. But I think I’m going to call her parents first. The police will call, I’m sure, but I feel the need to do it.”

Sofia got out of bed and came over and put her arm around me. I dialed the number in Indian Hill that I’d memorized so long ago and waited as the phone rang repeatedly. I decided to simply tell them that Becky was in the hospital and limit the details since I really didn’t know anything for sure.

“Hello?” a groggy Ben van Hoek said.

“Mr. van Hoek, this is Steve Adams in Chicago.”

“Steve? Is everything OK?”

“No sir. Becky’s roommate called and said that she found Becky unconscious on the floor and called the paramedics.”

Ben van Hoek snapped instantly awake.

“What hospital?” he said.

“MacNeal, on Oak Park Avenue, which is near the college, I think. I’d need to look at a map to be sure.”

I heard him tell his wife to get out of bed and then he spoke on the phone again.

“Do you have any idea what happened?”

I had to say something, even though I didn’t want to.

“I saw her earlier today and she was pretty upset. Rosie thinks she might have taken an overdose.”

He was silent for a moment.

“There’s my Call Waiting tone. I need to get that. Are you heading to the hospital?”

“Yes,” I said.

“Then I’ll see you there,” he said, clicking over to his other call.

I put the receiver back in the cradle and quickly stripped off my pajamas. I took a quick cold shower to clear the cobwebs from my mind and then started getting dressed.

“Do you want me to go with you?” Sofia asked.

“That’s probably a good idea,” I said.

She got out of bed and started for her room to dress. I told her I was going to make some coffee and went down to the kitchen and turned on the Mr. Coffee, which was already set up. Elyse liked coffee first thing in the morning and didn’t want to have to mess with it, so she prepared it the night before. While the coffee brewed, I wrote out a note and pinned it to the cork board in the kitchen. Ten minutes later, travel mugs full of hot coffee in hand, Sofia and I walked out the back door to my car.

I got the map book from the back seat and checked the index reference for Oak Park Avenue, then flipped to the correct page and ran my finger along Oak Park Avenue until I found the hospital in Berwyn, which was right near River Forest. The quickest route appeared to be I-55 to Harlem, and Harlem to West 34th Street. I put the car in gear and backed out of the driveway.

About 30 minutes later, I crossed Oak Park Avenue and saw the hospital on the left. I followed the signs for the Emergency Room and parked the car. Sofia and I got out and we walked briskly through the doors, and straight to the admitting desk. I thought a bit of subterfuge was necessary.

“My girlfriend was brought here from Rosary College,” I said.

“What’s her name?” the scrub-clad person asked.

“Rebekah van Hoek. That’s H-O-E-K. She’s twenty-one, and from Indian Hill, in Ohio.”

I hoped the added details would be enough for the nurse to tell me what was going on.

“She’s being treated. I can’t tell you more at the moment. I’ll ask a doctor to come talk to you. What’s your name?”

“Steve Adams.”

“Do you know if her parents have been called? The police haven’t told us.”

“I spoke with her dad about forty minutes ago. I’m sure that he and Becky’s mom are in the car on the way here from Cincinnati - that’s where Indian Hill is.”

“Have a seat. I’ll try to get a doctor to come out soon.”

We went to sit down and I had a humorous thought. If I’d put on my scrubs and lab coat, I could probably pass as a medical student and just walk right into where Becky was being treated. I could also get in a ridiculous amount of trouble for doing that and that would disappoint Doctor Barton, which bothered me in an odd way I didn’t quite understand.

“Where’s the girl who called you?” Sofia asked.

“I’m guessing the police are still talking to her. It’s only like five miles from here to the college.”

“What was that about her being your girlfriend?”

“Subterfuge. Most likely they wouldn’t even give me the time of day if I said I was just a friend. It seemed to work magic when Wen was in the hospital.”

A few minutes later a doctor in green scrubs came out and called my name. Sofia and I got up and walked over to him.

“You’re Becky’s boyfriend?” he asked.

“That’s right.”

“She’s doing OK. We have her on a respirator and she has an IV, but right now it looks like she’s going to make it.”

“What did she take?” I asked.

“Probably the best thing she could have taken to not die - Midazolam. It’s a sedative, but it usually won’t kill you unless you combine alcohol or something else with it. Do you know if she was drinking at all today?”

“I saw her at lunch, and then she went back to Rosary, so I don’t know for sure. Her roommate should be here soon, I think. And her parents are on their way.”

“Good. Just hang tight. In a couple of hours she’ll most likely come around.”

“Did you pump her stomach or something like that?”

“No. The activated charcoal doesn’t help much. She didn’t smell like alcohol at all, so we’re just using supportive treatment. We’ll keep her breathing and make sure she has enough fluids. Has she tried to kill herself before?”

“No. She was a bit upset after lunch today, but I didn’t expect anything like this.”

“What happened, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“We had a long talk about our relationship and the problems we’ve had over the years. I knew she was sad, but as I said, I didn’t expect anything like this.”

“OK. I’ll send someone out to get you when she comes around.”

“Thanks, Doctor Gwynn,” I said, reading his name from his badge.

Sofia and I sat back down.

“You’re getting yourself in deeper and deeper on this girlfriend thing,” she said.

“I know. But I’ll deal with that afterwards. In Indianapolis, they had me down as Bethany’s fiancé to skirt the rules.”

Sofia laughed, “If the hospitals ever compare notes between Wen, Bethany, and Becky, you’re going to have some serious explaining to do!”

“I know! My concern is that the police will question me. I’ll have to tell them something a lot closer to the truth.”

“How about the actual truth?” Sofia suggested.

“Finesse, my dear,” I smiled.

About ten minutes later Rosie came into the ER and I waved her over. I stood up and we hugged and I introduced her to Sofia.

“How is she?” Rosie asked.

“Alive. They think she’ll be OK. The stuff she took, Mid-something, apparently won’t kill you without adding alcohol.

“Midazolam,” Sofia said. “A sedative.”

“Sofia’s in pre-med,” I said. “What did the police say?”

“Not much. She wrote a note, but I didn’t see it. I found her on the floor and I called the paramedics right away. The police asked me if I’d called anyone and I told them I’d called you. They asked for your number, so I gave it to them, and also told them you would probably be here.”

“OK,” I said.

About fifteen minutes later, two River Forest police officers walked into the ER. They spoke to the nurse at the desk who pointed in our direction. I wasted no time and got up from my seat. The two officers, Casey and Martinez, by their name tags, walked towards me.

“Officers, I’m Steve Adams. My friend Rosie said she thought that you wanted to speak to me?”

“Do you have some ID, son?” Officer Casey asked.

I pulled out my wallet and handed over my driving license as well as my IIT ID card. He copied down the information in his report book and handed me back the ID.

“What’s your relationship to Miss van Hoek?” he asked.

“We’ve dated off and on since ninth grade. Right now, I’d say it’s ‘off’.” I answered.

“When was the last time you saw her?”

“Lunch yesterday,” I said.

“You mean Saturday?”

“Yes. She was waiting for me when I came home and I took her to lunch.”

“How did she seem?”

“A bit bummed, I guess. We’ve had some real difficulties over the years and she was hoping to fix things. Our conversation didn’t go very well. Other than being sad, she seemed fine when she left around 1:00pm or so.”

“And you didn’t talk to her after that at all?”

“No.”

“Where were you?”

“Home, except for about twenty minutes I spent having cocoa with my neighbors at their house.”

“And people can verify this?”

“Yes. The young woman over there, Sofia, was home with me the entire time.”

“What’s your relationship with her?”

“She’s a close friend and rents a room from me. I met her in Sweden almost six years ago.”

“Did she know Miss van Hoek?”

“No. She just met her today, and only said ‘hello’.”

“Were you aware of anything else that might have caused Miss van Hoek to try to take her own life?”

“No. I guess you talked to her roommate who would know more.”

“Do you know Miss Carson?”

“Yes. We met a few years ago at a party at IIT. She and I went on a couple of dates but nothing developed between us.”

“I think that’s all the questions we have. We got your phone number from Miss Carson. Someone may call you with more questions.”

“That’s fine. I heard that she left a note.”

“She did. It was addressed to her father.”

I nodded. I knew I wasn’t going to get any more information from the police officers, but I was a bit concerned about what she might have written in the note. I didn’t think she’d reveal any confidences, but I couldn’t be sure. If she had, I’d be getting a house call from a police detective or the FBI, and it wouldn’t be pretty.

“Thanks officers,” I said.

They talked to the nurse again and she picked up the phone. A minute later a doctor came out and took them back through the doors. I didn’t think they could be questioning her, given that she was on a respirator, so I just assumed that they were getting the details of her condition. They came back out about ten minutes later and left the hospital. I knew they’d be back to talk to Becky and her parents at some point.

About 5:30am, the doctor came back out and said that Becky was coming around, and that I could see her if I wanted to. Sofia touched my arm and gave me a look that said ‘be careful’. I nodded to her and then followed the doctor to the treatment room where Becky was being monitored.

A quick look at the monitor showed what appeared to me to be normal vital signs, and except for the respirator she looked peaceful.

“You can try to talk to her, but she might not respond. She’s going to be drifting in and out until the drugs work through her system.”

I went over to the bed and took Becky’s hand and leaned down close to her.

“Becky, it’s Steve.”

She stirred but didn’t open her eyes, very much like Bethany had when they were trying to bring her out of her coma. I tried again a minute later with the same result. I let go of her hand and moved back by the doctor.

“Is she really out of the woods?”

“Well, we can never be sure, but there are very few fatalities from Midazolam if the person gets to the hospital quickly. She’ll need a psych consult, but I suspect you guessed that.”

“I did. I had a friend in High School who tried to kill herself. She used a car. Far more effective, I guess. Fortunately, she survived.”

“I think your girlfriend will be fine physically,” the doctor said.

“Thanks. I guess for the moment I’ll go see my friends. Becky’s parents will likely be here in about two hours or so. They were driving up from near Cincinnati.”

“OK. When you want to come back here, just ask the nurse. I’ll leave word that it’s OK.”

“Thanks, Doctor Gwynn.”

I went back to where Sofia and Rosie were and told them that Becky was still out of it.

“Do you think I should go sit with her?” I asked. “At least until her parents get here?”

“That’s probably a good idea,” Sofia said. “What do her parents look like?”

I described Ben and Julie van Hoek as best as I could, then asked the nurse to let me back in to see Becky. I walked down the hallway to the treatment room and sat in the chair next to the bed to wait for her to wake up. Doctors and nurses came in and out every few minutes, and Doctor Gwynn had just come in when about an hour later she finally opened her eyes.

He said, “Becky, you’re in the emergency room at MacNeal Hospital. Don’t try to talk. You’re on a respirator. If you understand, squeeze my hand.”

She did.

“Good. I think we can take you off and remove the tube in your throat. Squeeze my hand if you understand.”

She did again.

The doctor called in two nurses, and they set about disconnecting the respirator. When Becky’s breathing stayed the same, they had her sit up and asked her to blow out hard and pulled the tube from her throat. She choked and coughed for a moment, then laid back while Doctor Gwynn examined her. When they finished, a nurse put a nasal canula on her, and then gave her some water. Once Becky had take a few sips, the nurse told her she could try to talk.

“Steve?” she rasped.

“Rosie called me. She found you and called the paramedics.”

“Why?” she rasped again.

“Because she cares about you. I’m here because I care about you.”

“No!” she croaked, and tears ran down her cheeks.

“Your parents will be here soon, probably in the next hour or so.”

Wand Book and Candle Part 1

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 1 By Elliot Reid "If I chance to talk a little wild, forgive me; I had it from my father." I snapped the book shut, eyes unfocusing from the text. With my fingers I massaged my temples, kneading tension away. I was approaching my birthday with mixed feelings. In two days I'd be sixteen. I'd have crossed another threshold. Would I feel more grown-up? I looked over at the stack of comic books by my bed, beside the Joseph Campbell and the Homer that I was...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 21 He Will Tell Thee What Thou Shalt Do

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 2 Reactions

August 18, 1993, Chicago, Illinois As I expected, bedlam erupted when Michelle and I walked in through the back door. Birgit squealed when she saw me, but there were gasps and stunned looks from the girls in the great room. “Steve?” Kara whispered. I went over to her and took her hand, pulling her up from the couch and hugging her. “What’s going on?” she asked. “Michelle decided to leave the monastery. I promised if she ever did that, I’d make sure she’d get home.” “She’s going...

Wand Book and Candle Part 3

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 3 By Elliot Reid I hefted the 'phone, punched in the long-distance number and tried to ease back in the chair by my computer. My head, cushioned by a mass of unfamiliar hair, rested against the wall as I tilted back. I was cocooned in the femme pinkness of my bedroom, still glowing from my pool encounter with Tisha. As soon as I had gotten back I'd shucked off the starched school clothes. Having spent the day prancing around in my hot...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 5 By Elliot Reid A scorching plain of fine white mica lay beneath an obsidian sky. Above it hung the Moon, wreathed in flame. Before me hovered a figure I did not recognize, pale and cold. It looked nothing like my father and yet I knew it was him. "Why do feel these things?" I asked the specter. "Why do I want to mutilate my girlfriends?" "The wand asserts itself," the ghost said, its voice dry as a library. "The what?" "The wand. Your old...

Andrea Standing (part 2 of Andrea's Stand) A note at the beginning. One of the problems with writing a serial story is that the author feels a need to recap what happened in the prior portions. Over the Hills and Faraway Book 2 RelationshipsChapter 1 Aldershot Sept 1987 Mandy Cindy and a funny story concerning Sandra

There is a shortage of cunt in Aldershot! Well at least of good quality cunt. The place has been a garrison town for hundreds of years and there are only two sorts of females in it. The first are the stuck up sort who wouldn't touch a squaddie with a barge pole and the others, who are not stuck up but poxed up, who you wouldn't want to touch with your barge pole. I'm being grossly unfair! I had been in a foul mood since the latest bust up with Miriam, and lack of nooky (sex!) was giving...

The Kringle Sisters Are Ready for ChristmasChapter 2 Gunther the Reindeer Handler Gets Laid

Jingle bells! Jingle bells! Jingle all the way! The sound of the holiday song hit Gunther's ears like an ice drift on the open sea. He tried to open his booze-laden eyes to see who was making the racket and saw it was the blasted elves again. Those holiday-enthused cretins were so full of Christmas spirit that they made a nuisance at this time of year as far back as he could remember. He wanted to shout out for them to cease and desist before he made them into little pieces of elves all...

Andrew Running Part 1 of Andreas Stand

Andrew Running (part 1 of Andrea's Stand) Chapter 1: Running I called my Aunt Clara from the bus station. She didn't seem that surprised to hear from me and when I explained why I was there she told me to walk a couple of blocks to the local diner and get myself a cup of coffee. She'd pick me up in about half an hour. I sat and sipped chocolate milk and tried to eat a pastry while I glanced nervously out of the window waiting for my father to show up and force me into his...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

Candys Dandy

by Millie Dynamite Jaden and I meet a few weeks after he transferred to the Naval base just outside of town. I sat on a bar stool sipping my Pappy Van Winkle when this tall African-American man in full dress uniform sat next to me. He whore captain’s bars. He possessed an air of authority. I nodded to him when perched on the next stool. He returned my nod with his own acknowledgment, in a deep voice he said, “Yo.” He spoke without looking at me. “I’ll have bourbon, make it a shot of Evan...

Strange RelationshipsChapter 10 Armand Mixes in the Hernandezs Affairs

Armand Wilson sat in his home office/study sighing. From the office, things had looked pretty good; business was on track, and Sharon appeared to be handling her new situation well. But in the car on the way home, Armand began getting bad vibes, and when he arrived at his mansion, things were even worse. Everyone on staff was walking around as if on eggshells. It took Armand about twenty minutes' worth of snooping, but the situation resolved itself -- the Hernandez' quarters were an armed...

Wand Book and Candle Part 4

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 4 By Elliot Reid The transformation slowed, the final change trickling into place. I cocked my head at the caramel woman in the mirror and smiled a dazzling, Colgate smile. My new face and figure was perfect in every detail, a Xerox copy of the original. I was the spitting image of my new crush, Tisha Williams. I stared at my coffee-colored hands with their light fingernails, noting the fine knuckle wrinkles. I then lifted my fingers to pat the...

CANDY FINDS HER SON HANDY AND DANDY

by Oediplex 8==3~ The sweetest mom discovers her boy is both convenient and delightful. [She also recounts when her dad fucked her at nineteen!] Like the name of Madame DeVille's moniker, Cruella, some names fit the personality they are bestowed upon. Disney came up with that evil woman's apropos handle. My mother's folks named their only child, a daughter, Candy. This was shortly before the infamous 1968 movie was out. Though there were aspects of mom that paralleled the...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 14 Katherine Victoria Will

January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. It didn’t look like it had been much of a contest, given that the score was 38-16, with San Francisco trouncing Miami. I grabbed a Coke and some chips and sat down on the couch next to Julia and Dave. In the room, besides my housemates, were Jamie, Kenneth, Kurt, Kathy, Jorge, George, Charlie, Bert, and Wen. “Julia, I got approval from both guys in Cincinnati,” I said. She...

Andersonville 21 Sins of the father Sins of the son

"Good morning, Miss Anderson," Crius said in a formal tone. "Please, call me, Linda," I replied. "Only if you call me, Crius," he answered. The Titan God smiled, but I detected no warmth to it. "Okay, Crius." I returned his smile with some reservation. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I didn't feel at ease with him. When he had asked me out to breakfast, I had been tempted to say 'no', but my curiosity had gotten the better of me. "So, what can I do for you?" "Nothing,...

Loosening Up Book 9 Fantasies Among the WeedsChapter 2 Phi Theta Rho Party Again

Late on Saturday afternoon Dave shifted into his job as one of the bartenders for the Circle. Just as he was ready for a first customer, Emma came racing up to the bar. She was alone and only wearing a monokini, unlike a few hours earlier when her parents and younger sister had visited and she was dressed conservatively. She extended her body over the bar and kissed Dave. “Thank you for being so nice to my parents and sister.” “Of course. They’re nice people. I take it they don’t know a...

July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. Mom, Dad, Aunt Kara and I left the house and headed down the sidewalk towards the hospital where Mom and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Boss, Penny just called!” Terry grinned from my doorway on Tuesday morning. “And you’re standing there, why?” I chuckled. “Call when Amber has a little brother or sister!” “I will!” he grinned. I picked up the phone and dialed Kimmy’s desk to let her know so she could arrange for flowers, and also record Terry out on ‘«pappaledighet»’. I finally heard from him about 8:30pm that Amber had a baby brother, Andrew, who they would call Andy. I called Kimmy...

A Shy Guys Notebook Part Two Following the Books Commands

James sat upright on his bed, with his legs crossed and hishands holding his head up. He just stared at the small, red notebook that lay in front of him, this mysterious gift that was granted to him. His own name was engraved on the front. It was almost like it was glowing, beckoning him to open it, to control reality even more. His mind was racing, full of thoughts of Amy, Kirsty and the words written inside the book: ‘Kirsty is going to change her mind and ask me to come over to work on the...

Second Time Through Book IChapter 10 Mandy Candy

Julie was still sitting on the bed with me when we heard the commotion in the hall. Then the door to my room banged open and in tumbled a giggling mass of blond. "Holy Shit! This whole family is blond!" I thought. Since I knew Nicky and Jennifer, and the other three were very similar in appearance, allowing for the slight age difference, I assumed the others were my cousins. The two youngest ones were fourteen year old twin daughters of Sarah's twin sister, Debbie. And the third was...

Sword Saint Book Two IncompleteChapter 15 Chandra away

We woke, it wasn’t quite dawn yet with the sun under the horizon gently lighting the morning sky. I wiggled out from under Celia’s grip and slipped out of the bed following Chandra as she exited the small water closet. We dressed, quietly washed and left the room without disturbing the still sleeping strawberry blond. Breakfast was a subdued affair, she was too nervous to contribute anything meaningful. “You will be fine, just believe in yourself.” *Mumble. “You’ll be fine, trust me.” I...

Although Tom liked the quiet moments with her, today it was hard to resist his want to take Chloe there on the couch. He hadn’t fucked her in over 24 hours now. He was holding off and building up his cum for when his new daughter arrived. It was supposed to be any time now, but it was still frustrating having such a great piece right in front of him and having to hold off fucking her. August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

Otto looked up in surprise as I strode into my office in the Fortezza Nuova. “I did not expect to see you until the end of the month, Colonel.” I could see he was disconcerted, annoyed even, by my earlier than expected return, and I sought to assure him of my confidence in his abilities. “Believe me Otto, I was extremely loth to leave Florence. Although you are more than competent to manage the impending inspection I deemed it a politeness on my part to be present when Duke Leopold arrives...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

December 21, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “No shit, Doc!” I exclaimed. “Why the fuck do you think I’ve spent the last twenty-three years in one form of therapy or another? Will you stop treating me like a typical patient and acknowledge and respect that not only do I know myself, but I am NOT like anyone else you have ever met? I don’t fit into any of your cookie-cutter diagnoses nor can you put me in some little box on a chart and say that’s where I belong.” “Is that what you...
