"Have her call me on my cell," her father said. "I'm on my way to the doctor's office."

"We haven't met, sir," Ray said. "I'm just a ... a colleague of Carolyn's, from the hospital."

Carolyn slept until almost three that afternoon. She woke up, smiled at Ray sitting in the chair near the window, and said, "meadowlark!"
"Want some breakfast?" Ray asked. "Cracker Barrel serves breakfast anytime."
"Is it late?"
"Almost three," he told her.

"More than all right," he said. "But your dad called. He wants you to call him on his cell. Said he was headed for the doctor's office."
"What did you tell him about ... where I was?"
"I told him we were colleagues from the hospital and that you were napping on my couch. Well, I said you were napping. The implication, I hope, was that it was on my couch."

"I guess that means you shouldn't just hang around town indefinitely," she said.
"I was planning to leave when you left tonight for work."
