After most of us settled back down after Sammy’s little Wushu demonstration, Lynette leaned against me and whispered up into my ear, “Because Angelika, uh, Kalena and her mom have a great understanding and appreciation of music, you, uh ... you know the song, the one you and I have worked on ... that Rock-n-Roll Dreams song?”

I simply nodded my affirmation to Lynette as she peered up at me. She then softly added to her thought stream, “Can’t you picture Kalena’s mom, Viktoriya, singing it to her back in Ivankiv...”

“God, yes, Cano. Perfectly,” I barely whispered back as I had trouble containing my rising enthusiasm regarding Lynette’s unbelievable thought. “We gotta play it for them, Baby,” I said out loud, which caught our bandmate’s attention.

“Play what?” Jennifer asked.

“Uh, do you want to or should I?” I asked down at Lynette.

“You’ll probably do a better job of explaining this than me,” Lynette replied as she gazed between me and the two Ukrainian ladies sitting across the space between our tables.

“What have you two, love-birds been up to?” Sammy playfully asked as I paused to put together my words on how I wanted to share Lynette’s sudden viewpoint about this song we wrote together over the past week.

I released a long sigh and then said, “Lynette and I, we, uh, we’ve written ... put together a song, and she just whispered to me how this song fits...”

“It’s an amazing fit, really!” Lynette interjected as she squeezed my hand.

“How it captures Viktoriya and Toxic’s forced separation, perfectly. Lynette and I ... well, Lynette came up with the picture, just now and uh, if everyone’s agreeable, we, Lynette and I, we’d like to play it for y’all.”

Even though I was aware of a couple of our band mates’ surprised reactions to my words and request, I was keenly focused on how Viktoriya and Toxic were responding to our entreaty. Both mother and daughter were whispering in their native Ukrainian language, and I couldn’t get an immediate read from their body language on how they felt regarding my request to play this song.

I wrapped my arm around Lynette, who was focused on Sammy and Cathy as I waited for some indication from Kalena and her mother on their desires. When Kalena glanced up at me for a second, I noticed a cloudy haze over her brown-green eyes and wondered if our request was going to be too painful for her obviously stressed emotional system. However, when Kalena winked at me after her mother finished their private discussion, the simmering gleam had returned to her eyes.

I was then able to relax slightly, which allowed the harried words from Sammy, Cathy and Lynette to slip past my attentional filter into my processing center. Before I could put everything I heard together, I heard Lynette say, “But we only kept it to get it just right before we shared it with you. We aren’t trying to prop ourselves up here, honest to God!”

“Ladies, ladies! Enough,” Mr. St. Georges and Mrs. Hobbs both said in either their elevated teacher or parental tone of voice to hopefully get the craziness between Sammy, Cathy and Lynette under control.

“Please, stop,” Viktoriya softly requested, which somehow put an immediate halt to the heated, teenage conversation and adult interventions. When she had our attention, Dr. Kharlamov calmly said, “All people in groups, be sport, business or music ... have Гарячі дискусії ... heated discussions. No matter, all come to best action for group, if wish to succeed. You kids are skilled, yes. No let squabble hurt your group. Yes?”

Sammy, Cathy, and even Jennifer to a lesser extent, all hung their heads and mumbled out an apology to Lynette for fussing at her like they just did. I looked at Paul, who simply shook his head and mouthed, ‘Girls,’ in their direction which succinctly encapsulated my current feelings on this silly spat.

“Now,” Viktoriya said after giving my female band members a moment to gather themselves. “I, and my Water-Baby would love to hear song, which Koo-da and Lynette say fits us like favorite rabbit-fur hat in Ukraine winter.”

Viktoriya’s imagery definitely put a smile back on everyone’s face as we all were well acquainted with the wonderful feelings generated by a perfectly warm hat on a cold Canadian winter day.

As I held Lynette’s chair for her to sit with her keytar, Kalena asked, “What is this song called, Mike?”

“Well, we haven’t finalized the title yet, but we’re leaning towards either, There’s Always Something Magic or, uh, Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through.”

(Note: Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through was written by Jim Steinman in 1981, and was a top forty hit for both Steinman, #32 on Billboards’ Hot 100 in 1981, and for Meatloaf, #13 on the Hot 100 in 1993.)

I looked at Lynette and saw her nod her tear-streaked face towards the Kharlamovs. Right then I knew we were on the same page, so I then said to Toxic and her mother, “We’d like ... both of you to decide which of those titles you think would be best for this song, okay?”

Both Viktoriya and Toxic’s Eastern European faces perked up when they heard me say they could select this song’s title. Dr. Kharlamov then turned to her daughter and said, “You understand words better than me. You pick favorite title, yes.”

“Your English is better than you think, Momma,” Kalena replied. “We’ll decide on the best title ... together.”

Viktoriya turned in her seat to share another small hug with her daughter and then softly said, “We figure best title, together, Kalena.”

As I was putting the capo over the strings on my guitar, I calmly said to Paul, Cathy, Jennifer and Sammy, “Treat this exactly like we did when Jenn and Sam introduced, I Hate Myself for Loving You, to us last week at the guest house. Imagine how you’ll see your bass, your drums, your saxophones, or the guitars fit into this song, okay?”

“We’re good, Cuda,” Sammy said with a smile. “I never should have jumped on you guys like that.”

“You know we were going to do what you just said ... sheesh,” Jennifer added with a smile and an air-kiss.

Paul just gave me a fist bump, while Cathy winked at me and Lynette. Right then, I knew all was right in the Time Bandit world.

The cafeteria crowd fell silent once more as I softly strummed out the opening cords of this song. Lynette seamlessly added a dark and eerie organ motif with her new instrument. I watched her skillful left hand quickly tap two different ‘voice’ buttons, which would create a steady drum beat, and deep bass guitar rhythm. Just as I spiced up my guitar playing, Lynette tapped the rhythm start button, and instantly adjusted those beats to match my playing with the ‘slider-bar’.

As she played the next eerie organ sequence in our introduction, Lynette also vocalized a soft, yet equally unnerving howl, which beautifully created a perfect disconcerting setting for this song. I took one step towards my girlfriend and whispered, “That was scary-ass good, Cano.”

When I looked over at Jennifer and Sammy, they both were awe-struck in their seats as they focused on our simple but effective introduction. As expected, Cathy was already zoned out in her private air-drum world, and as far as I could tell, she had a pretty solid idea of what she thought the opening drum sequences would be or sound. My best friend, Paul, just smiled and nodded as we made eye contact. I had no doubt he already had his bass lines planned and ready for our first group session with this song.

Just before I began to sing the troubling first verse, I glanced at Kalena and Viktoriya. I couldn’t help but notice that Kalena appeared as if she had regressed back into a fearful pre-teen, Ukrainian girl as she clung to her mother’s protective right arm. Viktoriya, not surprisingly, appeared stronger and slightly defensive as she sat up perfectly straight in her chair with her feet tucked slightly underneath her seat as if she was ready to act on the first sign of danger.

For a brief moment, I almost wanted to stop playing this song because of their bodies’ responses. However, when Viktoriya softly said, “Дуже гарний,” which Kalena earlier had translated as ‘very good’, I felt a mini-wave of relief wash over me.

After Lynette created that unsettling milieu a second time with her organ and vocalized combination, I toned down my guitar work and eased back into a simple chord strumming routine. Our simpler sounds set the dark ambiance for my lyrics, and Lynette’s backing vocals and sounds.

I took two small steps towards Toxic and Viktoriya and sang:

“You can’t run away forever,
But there’s nothing wrong with getting a good head start.
You want to shut out the night, you want to shut down the sun.
You want to shut away the pieces of a broken heart.”

As I sang the second stanza, Lynette recreated her eerie background vocalizations on the first two lines, which caused Viktoriya to reach across her body with her left hand to squeeze Kalena’s python like right upper arm.

“Think of how we’d lay down together,
We’d be listening to the radio, so loud and so strong.
Every golden nugget coming like a gift through the Gods,
Someone must have blessed us when he gave us those songs.”

“Так вірний, so true, so true,” Viktoriya softly whispered to Kalena after I sang the last two lines of those lyrics.

During the chorus, Lynette softly echoed the initial phrase of the first and fourth lines of my mellow vocals. However, she once more recreated that desolate atmosphere as I sang the harsher sounding second and third, plus the fifth and sixth lines, directly at Kalena:

“I treasure your love, I never want to lose it.
Girl, you’ve been through the fires of hell,
And I know you’ve got the ashes to prove it.
I treasure your love, I want to show you how to use it.
You’ve been through a lot of pain in the dirt,
And I know you’ve got the scars to prove it.”

For the remainder of the chorus, Lynette remained relatively silent. She did provide a strong solo on the, “Keep on...” line, and some beautiful harmonic-echoes to my lead vocals on the, “There’s always...” and “The beat...” lyrics as I sang:

“Remember everything that I told you,
And I’m telling you again that it’s true.
When you’re alone and afraid, and you’re completely amazed,
To find there’s nothing anybody can do.

Keep on believing, and you’ll discover, baby!

There’s always something magic,
There’s always something new.
And when you really, really need it the most,
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through.

The beat is yours forever,
The beat is always true.
And when you really, really need it the most,
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through for you.”

As I was singing the, “Remember everything...” stanza, Dr. Kharlamov eased her right arm from her daughter’s tight grasp and non-verbally motioned, ‘Pass me your guitar‘ towards Samantha. Dr. K smiled at both Lynette and me after she positioned Sam’s twelve-string guitar on her lap and waited until we finished with the chorus’ lyrics.

No one around us was surprised when Viktoriya Kharlamov played a superb guitar solo as Lynette and I softly played in the background between the chorus and the short second verse. Dr. K nodded her expressive head at us as she gracefully brought her exquisite solo to an end. She then wonderfully melded the twelve-string guitar’s sound with our instruments as I sang the second verse. Lynette provided a strong echoed final line of that verse, which led us into the slightly different version of the chorus:

“Once upon a time was a back beat,
Once upon a time all the chords came to life.
And the ANGELS had GUITARS even before they had wings,
If you hold onto a chorus you can get through the night.

Get you through the night.

I treasure your love, I never want to lose it.
You’ve been through the fires of hell,
And I know you’ve got the ashes to prove it.
I treasure your love, I want to show you how to use it.
You’ve been through a lot of pain in the dirt,
And I know you’ve got the scars to prove it.

Remember everything that I told you,
And I’m telling you again that it’s true.
You’re never alone ‘cause you can put on the phones,
And let the DRUMMER tell your heart what to do.

Keep on believing, and you’ll discover, baby!

There’s always something magic,
There’s always something new.
And when you really, really need it the most,
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through.

The beat is yours forever,
The beat is always true.
And when you really, really need it the most,
That’s when rock and roll dreams come through.

Oh! for yooooooooooooooou! Yeah, hell yeah!”

I knew this song put a beautiful concluding stamp on Kalena and Viktoriya’s nightmarish experience. As I sang, ‘And the ANGELS had GUITARS even before they had wings‘ line, I saw a metamorphosing Kalena stand up tall behind her guitar playing mother. Gone was the terrified little Ukrainian girl, who fearfully clutched onto her mother’s arm at the start of our song. That miserable orphaned child was magically morphed back into a strong young lady as she listened to Lynette, her mother, and I play the remainder of this song. I knew Kalena’s conversion was fully complete as I watched her wrap her now powerful arms around her mother’s waist and place her refreshed face on her protector’s shoulder.

Lynette had skillfully transformed her initial, eerie organ sounds into an all empowering, comfort-filled grand-piano sound by the time I sang the final two lines of the chorus. Dr. Kharlamov and I both reduced our guitar outputs, so Lynette’s piano rift generated a perfect, powerful backdrop for my transformed, spirit-filled finishing lyric.

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph,” Samantha involuntarily said to break the wonderful silence after our song ended.

“Oh, Momma,” Kalena barely vocalized as she covered her mother’s right cheek and neck in rapid kisses.

“How in the heavens did the two of you write and create such a powerful song?” Mrs. Hobbs asked as she moved over to give the Kharlamov ladies a gentle group hug.

Lynette dropped her head towards her chest after hearing those statements, and the noticeably large round of applause from the now packed cafeteria crowd. I adjusted my guitar, so it hung on my right hip and moved alongside my proud, yet suddenly embarrassed girlfriend.

After I gave Lynette a gentle comforting hug, I whispered in her ear, “Are you going to explain this or... ?”

“No, no. You do it, please,” Lynette softly replied. She then wrapped her right arm around my waist and hung onto me like her life depended on it.

“We, all six of us,” I said as I motioned to my bandmates, “we’ve been blessed with several gifts with music being one of them. Each of us, not just Lynette and me, have either written some awesome lyrics, or created some unique music to bring out the true essence behind those lyrics.” I then took a slow deep breath to regroup my thoughts, before I added, “However, after hearing about our friend, Angelika Tolsik ... Kalena Kharlamov and her mother’s unbelievable life story, we ... Lynette especially...” and I put my right hand under her chin and slowly lifted up on it, “used our creative gifts to integrate their hellish separation and heavenly reunion into that song.”

“Believe me...” Lynette softly said, then paused to refresh her spirits. In a stronger voice, she then stated, “Our prior run-throughs of this song didn’t sound anything like that. It really ... those sounds, they just radiated from my fingers and my mouth as the image of the Kharlamov’s situation ran through my mind.”

“It is Благословення з Бога ... a blessing from God,” Viktoriya added as she raised her hands in a prayerful manner. She then lightly tapped her right hand on the body of Sammy’s twelve-string guitar and said, “You both take horrible experience and turn into wonderful music. I so Оцініть, uh, how do I say? ‘Appreciate you’, yes. Also for chance to play guitar with you, thank you.”

“You will always be welcome to play with us or offer up any helpful suggestions,” I replied.

My words were quickly verified by my band mates. Samantha then added, “Angelika, if you ever want to sing or play with us, all you have to do is ask.”

Angelika smiled back at Sammy, and gave Paul a subtle wink in remembrance of his earlier words. She then said, “If you ever need violin-type sounds in any of your songs, I’m your girl.”

“Yes, yes, my Kalena was very good violinist,” Viktoriya interjected. “She also can play cello and guitar.”

“Ukuleles, mandolins, bongos and now, violins and cellos ... what in heaven’s name is happening in my world?” Paul drily said as he tossed his hands in various directions on each spoken instrument. He lifted both of his arms up as he jokingly asked his rhetorical question.

“Pretty soon, oh brother of mine...” Cathy added in her best dry voice, “we’ll be a pure country band!” Try as she may, Cathy wasn’t near as good as her twin brother at keeping her emotions in check for comedic purposes as she laughed out the concluding statement.

“God! Just shoot me now, will you, Cuda?” Paul fired off as he collapsed down onto his knees.

“Speaking of country songs...” I said with a smile, and let that phrase hang out there as I winked at Cathy. That short statement served its purpose as Paul simply groaned a little more and pretended to tie a noose around his neck to hang himself.

“May I see your guitar?” Dr. Kharlamov softly asked towards me, which served to refocus our merry band of humorists back into being a regular band. Dr. K and I swapped my six-string for Sammy’s twelve-string guitar. As I was about to hand Sammy her guitar back, Dr. Kharlamov said, “You play twelve-string, yes, Koo-da?”

“Yes, Ma’am, I can play a twelve,” I replied. I then looked at Sammy, who immediately motioned for me to keep her guitar.

As this was going on, Jennifer lifted her Blueberry Fierro twelve-string out of its case and lightly strummed her pride and joy. Dr. Kharlamov immediately instructed Jennifer to make a slight decrease to her Treble-G string and a slight increase in the Octave-G string.

“Much perfect,” she said to Jennifer after the beautiful brunette ran her guitar-pick over the adjusted strings.

“You know ‘dis song. Join in when able, please,” Viktoriya said towards me, Lynette and Jennifer as she strummed my six-string guitar to get a feel for the fretboard and its sound quality. She then surprised me by saying, “You sing, Koo-da.”

I was afraid that Sammy would be slightly peeved at having her guitar usurped, but she was all smiles as she watched Toxic’s mother adjust my guitar on her right thigh. After she was satisfied with the guitar’s position, Dr. Kharlamov said to all of us, “Song in ‘B-minor’, yes.”

When Dr. K first started to play, I struggled to identify the song as she fingered out a beautiful, but still unknown melody. After twenty-five seconds, she stopped playing her guitar, and looked at Cathy, who had placed the tri-set of bongos across her lap. Dr. Kharlamov then lightly tapped out a rhythm on the body and sides of my six-string for Cathy. Our raven-haired percussionist quickly picked up on the rhythms that Dr. K wanted for this song, and lightly generated it for her.

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 10 Life in the Fast Lane

Medway High School 2:57pm, Thursday, February 15, 1979 First off, I agreed to start a new band with my next door neighbors, which wasn’t too crazy as I always had a dream of playing in a rock band. After I agreed to play in Paul and Cathy’s band, I was given a beautiful Gibson Custom guitar by Samantha Labatt, an heiress to the Canadian brewery giants. I just happened play that guitar like a pro the first time I strapped it on, in order to shut-up a snarky music teacher. All those musical...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 18 Best of Both Worlds

Lynette Robertson’s House, Komoka 8:16pm, Saturday, February 17, 1979 I was once more utterly amazed when I saw Lynette strip down to a lovely bra and panty set. She was absolutely gorgeous as she stood upright beside her parents’ king sized bed after she slightly struggled to get her tight blue jeans off her long, lean legs. Her full, firm breasts were covered by a white, underwire bra, which had black flowers decorating the cup material. Along the top edge of her bra, black lace enticed...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 5 Staying Alive

Medway High School, Arva, Ontario 1:09pm, Wednesday, February 14, 1979 “I would love to go to the Valentine’s Dance with you on Friday, Mike!” Lynette said a little too loudly again, which caused George to divert his attention from his Dungeons and Dragons‘ book to us. When George quickly determined what just happened, he surprised both of us by saying, “It’s about time you two decided to take that next step in your relationship. I’ve watched you around school for some time now, and you...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 12 Alone

Medway High School 12:43pm, Friday, February 16, 1979 As Samantha walked through the music room doors, she turned slightly back towards me and Lynette and said, “It’s called, Alone.” I just raised my eyebrows at the name of the song as I recalled a popular song from the late 1980s with that title. I wondered if it was an original Samantha song or some incredible offshoot of the song I remembered. (Note: Please understand I’m not as creative in song writing as Don Lockwood was in his...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 6 Right Now

Medway High School, Arva, Ontario Thursday, February 15, 1979 My second day back in 1979 was a relatively normal day for any high schooler. First thing that morning, my brother and I got into it over who had first dibs on the bathroom. Trying to be nice, I gave in and let him use it first, seeing how I had taken a shower at school the night before and didn’t do much after that, except for some leisurely clothes shopping with my mom. Still, I didn’t take too kindly to Patt’s sorry ‘holier...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 48 Twilight Zone

Wheels’ Resort Cafeteria, Chatham, Ontario 4:49pm, Saturday, March 10, 1979 “Are you alright, Viktoriya?” I asked the thirty-seven-old Ukrainian beauty as she sat in a dazed state in the cafeteria at Wheels’ Resort. We were still inside an Energist energy bubble because everyone around us was still distant, immobile and exactly in the same positions as before. “I fine, Michael, but...” she confusingly replied as she tried to make sense of what just happened, as well as why everyone here...

Labatt’s Limo to Glencoe High School 5:35pm, Friday, April 6, 1979 “What do you mean ... this can’t be the one and only time you’re gonna play with us?” Lynette exclaimed after Jennifer told all seven of us that this would be the last time she thought she’d be able to play with our band. “I, I just think that with my new gymnastics schedule and more importantly, listening to how E and Brick have sounded with you ... that I’m just...” “You’re still gonna do the odd ‘guest sax’ song or two...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 17 Candle in the Wind

Parking Lot at UWO’s Football Stadium, London, Ontario 6:14pm, Saturday, February 17, 1979 The drive from Western’s campus to Coach Jacket’s house was relatively quiet but tension filled. We listened to FM96 on the car’s stereo. When we heard Dire Straits’ Sultans of Swing, Lynette commented, “I think that would be a good song for our band to play. Everyone seems to like it, and you’d kill Mark Knopfler’s guitar part.” “It is a pretty cool tune,” I replied as I turned towards her as she...

The Labatt’s Limousine, Approaching Bryanston 6:48pm, Saturday, February 24, 1979 Samantha was cuddling up against my best friend, Paul. Mike’s House, Bryanston 1:07pm, Sunday, February 20, 1979 Around 1pm, after having a couple of oranges as a snack, I asked Lynette if she wanted to go for a walk in our new frozen wonderland. It wasn’t real cold outside, probably 25 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit, so our basic winter coats, toques and gloves worked fine, especially since we’d be moving around outside. There was a sheet of ice at least three-quarters of an inch thick over everything, which was beautiful to see but made traveling...

Wheels Resort Dining Area 2:38pm, Saturday, March 10, 1979 It wasn’t hard to believe that all of us students, coaches and parents were completely mesmerized by Viktoriya Kharlamov’s stories about growing up in the Ukraine. Instead, we commandeered a small corner of the Resort’s cafeteria and were regaled by the amazing tales we heard. Toxic and her mother had moved to a small town, Ivankiv about...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 29 Maneater

Outside the Nevins’ and McGregory’ houses 11:56pm, Friday, February 23, 1979 When Cathy had my attention, she called out, “You better watch out, Cuda, ‘cause she’ll chew you up. She’s a Man-eater!” (Note: Maneater is a 1982, Hall and Oates song, where they created this compound word. In the text, I will be using the more traditional ‘man-eater’ form as that song title isn’t ‘officially’ used.) I laughed out loud in the chilly February night air and then replied, “You’re probably right,...

Mike’s House, Bryanston 6:15pm, Sunday, February 20, 1979 “That was a great dinner, Mrs. Nevins,” Lynette said as she used a piece of my mother’s homemade bread to sop up the last of the gravy on her plate. “My mom rarely uses a crock pot to cook meals, so that was the first time I’ve had a roast beef, potatoes, and carrots done like that. It was delicious.” “Thanks, Lynette,” my mom replied as she turned back to the table with a warm apple pie in her hands. “These guys around here just...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 51 I Can Love You Like That

Robertson’s House, Komoka, Ontario 9:46pm, Saturday, March 10, 1979 “This is all about you, tonight, Cano,” I said as I used the pink Loofah sponge, which Mrs. R provided to clean and exfoliate my girlfriend’s lean, muscular back. “Lift your arms up, please.” “But I want to return the favor ... and more for you,” Lynette softly whined as she gathered up her mane of wet blonde hair and positioned it within her hands on top of her head. My slender girlfriend gradually perked back to life as...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 35 Beds Are Burning

Geography Classroom, Medway High School 2:36pm, Thursday, March 1, 1979 “ ... This song is called, Beds Are Burning,” I said with a sense of pride in my voice. As I was thinking of songs to play for this presentation, I just happened to remember the band, Midnight Oil. Then, I quickly stumbled upon this wonderful song and I just knew we’d have to play it. (Note: This song is from 1987. However, I liked how it fit with our presentation on various Australian performers or groups and their...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 13 You Make Loving Fun

Medway High School Gymnasium 3:42pm, Friday, February 16, 1979 ‘My God, she’s absolutely stunning!‘ I thought as I stood at the gym doorway for a moment and took in the scene across the gym. Lynette had somehow changed outfits since I last saw her at the start of geography class. Gone were the black baggie sweatpants and a red Medway fleece sweatshirt. Lynette now was whooping and hollering in a mid-thigh length, red and black hounds-tooth patterned skirt with black fishnet stockings....

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 11 Dont Stop

Mike’s House 6:15am, Friday, February 16, 1979 “Up and at ‘um, boys!” my dad gruffly said as he stuck his leg into my bottom bunk to give me his usual early morning alarm signal. As I struggled to get awake, I thought it was somewhat good that I was falling back into my previous high school routine where my dad HAD to get me up and at ‘um. I lazily stretched under the covers, and then flung them back to crawl out of my warm cocoon. Just as my feet hit the carpet, the overhead lights came on...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 40 Come Together

Jennifer’s Ford Ranger 8:42 pm, Tuesday, March 6, 1979 “I wonder how Paul’s tutoring session went,” I offered up to break the silence in the cab of Jennifer’s pickup truck as we drove east on Medway Road. Unlike my other rides home with Jennifer, when I’m squished up against her, I was now sitting against the passenger door. Cathy was between Jennifer and me in the still slightly cramped cab of her small pickup truck. “So that’s why he wasn’t at the game. I was hesitant about asking you,...

Outside on Lynette’s Driveway 8:07am, Saturday, March 10, 1979 “Good morning, Ms. Lynette. May I take your gym bag for you?” Jason, the Labatt’s chauffeur asked as he watched the sixteen-year-old blonde bounce down the drive towards the black limousine. “For a Saturday morning, ‘You look mahvelous!’” he added in his best Billy Crystal voice as Lynette, in a tight white t-shirt, scurried past him around the front of the long black car. “Why, thank yoo, kind seh,” I heard Lynette reply in...

Sammy’s Guest House 4:15pm, Wednesday, March 28, 1979 “Holy moly! E and Lisa! That was ... beyond awesome!“ Cathy said for all of us after our two newest band members played a two-and-a-half-minute kick ass drum and bass instrumental riff. “Got any lyrics to go with that monster riff?” Lynette excitedly asked the girls as she took a swig of her Diet Coke. “Sorry, no,” Eda hurriedly said as tried to catch her breath as she sat on her drum throne after killing her DW double bass drum...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 52 Grace Like Rain

St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, London, Ontario 9:12am, Sunday, March 11, 1979 “So there’s a lot of stand-up, kneel, and sit-down stuff, huh?” Lynette asked me as we walked along the concrete walkway beside the curved outer wall of my church, St. Andrew the Apostle, in Northeast London. “Yeah, but don’t worry ‘bout it. I’ll be right there and I won’t leave you hanging about what to do. Also, there’s prayer missals, which can help you follow along with what is going on and what is...

After the Energists Rebooted Teen YearsChapter 27 Barracuda

Medway High School, Arva 5:05pm, Friday, February 23, 1979 I was sitting in the bleachers, as the JV basketball game against our biggest rivals, Strathroy Collegiate tipped off. I then saw Tony Radchuk walk into the gym. Seeing him sparked an idea in my mind. If you were interested in placing an undercover wager on any sporting events, like hockey, basketball or football, Tony was the person you wanted to see at Medway. I excused myself from Jon and Andy Lunby, and Andrew Werring, and...

Labatt Guest House 2:10pm, Friday, March 23, 1979 “That was an amazing group of songs, you guys!” Elizabeth said after we wrapped up our practice run through of our opening ten song play list. “Was everything to your liking, Cathy?” our Cathy said to Bruce Smythe’s girlfriend, who asked that we not play anything too sad on this double funeral day. “Oh, yeah, that was perfect. I especially loved your acoustic combo of Two Steps Behind and Love Will Keep Us Alive,” Cathy Cromartie replied...

Medway High Cafeteria 5:12 pm, Tuesday, March 6, 1979 “You said what to him at that point?” Samantha asked of Lynette in an unbelieving manner as she looked across the cafeteria table at Lynette, Elizabeth, Joanne and Cathy. Jennifer, Andi, and Heidi were all huddled on Sam’s side of the table as the eight girls swapped stories about their Saturday night activities before the start of Medway’s basketball semi-final playoff game against North Middlesex Secondary School from Parkhill. “She...

Lynette’s Car, North of London 4:40pm, Sunday, March 25, 1979 “Timmins! That’s like half way to the frickin’ North Pole, isn’t it?” Lynette exclaimed as she drove north on Highbury Ave after we had a coffee, muffins and/or some donuts at Tim Hortons. “What the hell, Paul!” I said as I turned in the front passenger seat to stare at my clearly upset best friend in the back seat. “I, uh, me and Cathy weren’t gonna say anything to you guys ‘till it was official, but uh, its looking more and...

Medway High Cafeteria 12:10pm, Wednesday, March 14, 1979 “Who said you could snag any of my fries?” I asked in a faux, semi-annoyed tone at Sammy, after she failed at sneaking a couple of Medway’s finest delicacies from my tray. “Nobody,” Sammy replied with a grin as she munched on the two crispy potato strips. “Besides, who in their right mind eats French fries with P-B and J sandwiches?” “My good looking boyfriend, that’s who,” Lynette surprisingly said as she unexpectedly walked...

I quickly let Lynette down from my arms, and all six of us oriented ourselves in that direction. “You looked and sounded better than pretty good,” Mr. Labatt announced with his deep baritone voice. Driving in Mr. Nevin’s LeSabre 11:47pm, Friday, March 9, 1979 Paul, Bradley and Jennifer all turned north on Highway 4 from the Labatt’s estate, while I followed Toxic and Ian’s family vehicle, heading south to take Lynette and Andrea to their homes in Killworth and Komoka. Lynette had already snuggled up under my arm as I drove the short distance to Fanshawe Park Road. An isolated riverbank near the Ukraine’s Black Sea Coast 4:11pm, Monday, August 27, 1962 “Oh, Michael, I never thought I find such a strong, handsome young man like you, here in Ukraine,” Viktoriya Tolsik (nee: Kharlamov) softly stated as we walked hand in hand. Music Room, Medway High School 1:35 pm, Friday, March 9, 1979 “Mr. Nevins, Ms. Robertson and Ms. Labatt, do you three have any ‘new’ songs prepared, as per our agreement?” Mr. Ballows asked after everyone had gotten their instruments and taken their seats. Because the three of us were spread out in the large music room, I looked down at Sammy, who was sitting in the clarinet section, and then to Lynette, who was one row higher but across the room from Sammy with her flute. Both girls...

Robertson’s House, Komoka, Ontario 8:12pm, Saturday, March 10, 1979 When I lifted my hand from Lynette’s leg, the Energist’s isolation bubble faded. I then said to my now cognizant girlfriend, “Lynette, I think you’re mom said she has one of her homemade strawberry pies in the fridge. Mike’s Bedroom, Bryanston, Ontario 6:25am, Monday, March 26, 1979 “Sheesh! Be quiet, and just enjoy,” Lynette whispered in my ear as I was stirred from my slumber in a most pleasant manner. Lynette, who fell asleep lying on top of me with none of her body touching my bunkbed’s mattress was now straddling my body and gently grinding her pubic bone into mine. Homeroom, Medway High School 8:03am, Wednesday, March 21, 1979 The murmurings we heard in the halls before our homeroom session in Mr. Connors’ history room were tragically true. There was a heavy air in the room as a few sobbed, ‘Oh, Gods!‘ and other sadden words were muttered right after Mr. Williamson announced that two of my eleventh grade football teammates were killed in a car crash around ten-thirty on Tuesday night. Medway won the first game, 15-13, and lost the second, 15-12. In the third and deciding game, Medway was leading 12-9, and the Cowboys (girls) were playing the best they had played all season. Mike’s House, Bryanston 9:39am, Sunday, February 20, 1979 I groggily opened my eyes and took a hazy peek at the alarm clock/radio sitting beside my bunk bed. Being tired and somewhat disoriented at the moment, I didn’t immediately recognize the time, or that it was a Sunday morning. I rolled back onto my back and prayed to drop back to sleep once more. As usual, once I stirred from my slumber I rarely returned to that restful state. As my mind cleared up, I suddenly remembered where I was...

7:45pm, July 1, 2003 Once again, the Energists thankfully restricted access to my memories of them, so I could focus all my attention on... Kaleigh's nude 6 month pregnant body as she walked out of her master bathroom towards me. "You kill me with those Marvin the Martian boxers. When I 'woke up' from my Energists induced slumber, I felt completely refreshed and energized (pardon the pun). Based on my last memory, I wasn't dressed for much of anything, so I 'looked' at myself and thankfully discovered I was dressed in my comfortable teaching attire. "We hope you are feeling well and ready for another round of teaching," I heard the Energists say as I became fully aware of my surroundings. Time unknown and irrelevant – The Energists' Universe Upon our arrival back in the Energists alternate universe, I asked why it didn't feel like I was there watching Kaleigh and my family for almost three weeks. The Energists seemed befuddled by my question as I could now sense in them some distress. They shut me out of their communication loop for a moment as they worked on some type of problem without my knowledge. When they allowed me to rejoin their telepathic form of communicating,...
