It was a quiet walk as both Linda and I were concentrating on the various pieces we had of a very incomplete picture. We were both so deeply lost in thought that neither of us heard the man shouting at us until he ran up and put his arm on my shoulder.

"What the fuck are you guys doing?" he screamed at me as he spun me around.

I was tempted to throw a punch at the irate officer, but kept calm and found myself looking at Commodore Pruitt. He was about to scream again when I raised my right hand. He paused while looking at my hand.

"You need to get it straight, Ensign," I growled dangerously. "Trying to intimidate me puts one of a very short career path. Now unless you want to keep the rank I gave you permanently, you better start explaining yourself."

The man deflated. "You come here and start investigating and everything is going crazy. My friends on the ship barely talk to me now, and I'm sure that once the news of your arrival hits the training stations the officers there won't want to talk to me either. And I've done nothing to deserve that."

"That explains nothing," I said.

"Yeah," Linda added. "I mean we aren't here to punish someone who is trying their best, but you have to help us. Now what caused you to grab the Commander."

Commodore Pruitt looked down and blushed. "Sorry. I'm just overwhelmed. I know I'm struggling quite a bit in my post. When you arrived and no one knew why I was sure it was for something I had done, but you never approached me directly."

"You have a guilty conscience then?" I asked.

The man blushed. "No, but I definitely am feeling like I'm in the wrong post. I enjoy working on the training schedules and such, but right now all of the complaints from the training centers route through me, and..."

Linda put a gentle hand on the man's arm. "Are you that sensitive to the complaints of the training base commanders?"

To my surprise the man sank down to the ground. "God yes! I was barely an acquaintance to the commanders when there was a pickup in the bar they drank in. Honestly, I'm puzzled by how quickly I gained rank. Most of them were majors and colonels on Earth and have basically the same rank. I was just starting out in my career and I'm equal to many of them in rank now."

Linda looked at me as I smiled. "Son, one thing I learned is that the Confederacy AIs make unusual promotion suggestions at times, but they do so based on all of the test and training results. Often their suggestions are extremely good. I think you'll find that your Rear Admiral is very happy with the work you do. So you have a choice, you can be less sensitive to the complaints from the training officers, or you can see if the AI can suggest another post," I said kindly.

The man shook his head. "No, I don't want to leave here yet. I have reasons to stay."

Linda was looking at him and suddenly asked. "Does one of those reasons wear a business suit and dislike lower scoring citizens?"

The man turned to glare at her and then sighed. "She's my cousin. I promised our parents that I would protect her and guide her, but she doesn't listen to me anymore."

I looked over at Linda for a moment and she gave me a faint nod. "Are you saying you are related to Jennifer Gates?" I asked.

Once again the man sighed. "Please don't tell anyone. Her rank in DECO makes most of the navy hate her and if they knew I was related to her ... No one knows, except the two of us and now you. And since Jennifer avoids me now..."

His speech trailed off. His mournful expression made it clear how much he missed his cousin. At the same time I realized that additional talking in public might be unwise so I turned to Linda. "Let's take him back to our place for a more private talk."

Linda agreed and moments later we were guiding the still distraught Commodore Pruitt towards our stateroom. As we walked I noticed a few questioning gazes. Linda must have noticed the same because she subtly took the Commodore's arm in such a way that from a distance had to look like he was under arrest in some way. In fact the man came along willingly and seemed content to allow Linda and I to guide him through the passages until we reached our room and entered.

A Peril at IshtarChapter 38 Unexpected Company

A week later and things were once again going rather smoothly. Debby had gone into her pod with Vicky completely confused, but emerged ten hours later to pick up Orlando a confident and changed lady. She still was nervous approaching Orlando, but the young man refused to accept her protests and threw himself at her feet once he learned about her earlier ordeal. The next day the trio showed up for their welcome party arm-in-arm and glowing, which brought a cheer to everyone's lips. Debby...

The Lost Valley of Ishtar

The Lost Vale of Ishtar By: Lyrissa The wind howled across the jagged rocks of the mountain cleft as a lone figure cautiously descended the winding mountain path towards the edge of the cliffs. The pass appeared to be a natural formation created when some ancient cataclysm violently tore the mountains apart to form a long, winding canyon which allowed for passage through this inhospitable region of the Kezankian mountains. They sky overcast by ominous slate- grey clouds and somewhere...

The Ishtar InvestigationChapter 14 Less than Innocent Remarks

Traci ignored everyone except Jennifer and dashed forward to stand by the bed. "Oh god!" Traci screamed. "I can't believe that such a thing could happen to you! Who did it! Why?" I think everyone was shocked by this action. I was looking over at Traci and noticed that the collar pins she normally wore had changed slightly. The ark appeared the same, but the other was now co-joined women's symbols rather than the mix of male and female symbols from when I visited her office. I was going...

Ishtar and Other Old Friends

"Has anyone seen Kalliste?" Chelsea Winters asked as came through the door of the Women's Co-op. "I need her help with something." She was a thin blonde woman with short hair juggling an oversized purse and an umbrella. "Here," Kalliste said from beneath the loom. She was tightening something with a wrench. She crawled out, a slender woman with dark hair, bright eyes, a small, up-turned nose and a generous mouth. "What is it that you need, Chelsea?" Chelsea finished shaking out her...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 6 The Mission is Revealed

I entered the mess hall to find the room only just starting to fill. I could not see Yvette or any other sponsor I recognized so I quietly claimed my usual table and sat down waiting to see what was going to occur. There was no rush of sponsors, but I could see a trickle of bodies entering as we came closer to the announced starting time. I contented myself with guessing if those entering were part of the sadist majority that Ensign Bates had warned me about. As I did, I noticed a subtle...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 23 Recovery

I slowly climbed back to consciousness. Fog seemed to cloud my head, clearing briefly as a loud hiss broke through my muddled thoughts. I tried to sit up, but a firm hand on my left shoulder kept me lying flat. "Don't move yet," Shawna's voice instructed me. "Open your eyes and look at me." Bright almost blinding light caused me to gasp, but I held them open and turned my head towards the voice. Shawna stood next to me. My position put me about her waist level. Glancing down I could...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 36 Testing Results

Two days later proved to be a major red-letter day for the growing colony. After a relaxed morning Yvette called to remind me that Amanda and Jack Junior were about to undergo testing and suggested that I come to the medical bay for the test period. The two birthday kids were going to be using medical pods as testing booths. I arrived to find Ed and Shawna waiting for my arrival before allowing the duo into the pods. I nodded to Ed, and Amanda was gently led to one pod while her mother...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 9 A Bully from a Good Seed

Whitney was still hugging Tamara when a man entered the command post from the teleport room's passageway. "Hey! It's the unattached slut! Are you giving it out now! You refused me on the ship! You're unattached and can't do that!" The man reached out to grab Whitney. His hand had barely touched her when James burst from his chair and in a flying tackle slammed the man against the wall of the room. "Tamara, get her out of here. Xavier! Get me whoever is in charge of the Tintagel...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 32 Untimely Arrivals

The next four weeks passed peacefully. We saw visits from several ships, but none were heavily damaged. The longest stay was the corvette Aspen, which arrived with a missile jammed in its starboard tube. Terrence and Louis spent four hours with the AI carefully manipulating the missile until they could pull it free from the launcher. My tapestry was completed, and now hanging near the first door separating the enclave from the visitors part of the colony. Janice had claimed the loom and was...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 37 Friendly and Unfriendly Visitors

My master seemed exhausted as we left the command post and began to make our way through the passages. The halls were largely empty and I was going to ask why when the AI called out, "Devil hour has just begun." "More than half a day spent dealing with this," James said quietly. "I shouldn't be too surprised." "I just hope we can get some rest," I said. "That scientist seems..." I paused, trying to think of a good adjective to describe the man we had watched walk out. James said...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 16 A Meeting of the Sponsors

The next morning I woke in bed with all five of my concubines. I am not sure when I collapsed in bed, but they had arrayed themselves around me during the night. I snuck out of the room to get breakfast and clean up. The pod has a self cleaning feature, so other than putting the various games away, there was little cleaning necessary, and by the time that my ladies were stumbling from bed, I had the pod clean and breakfast on the table. "Yesterday was fun!" Tina said enthusiastically as...

The Ishtar InvestigationChapter 6 Travel to the Scene

The trip to the teleport was swift and we found that we had priority in line. Moments later we were finding a comfortable place to sit as the courier ship's crew boosted for the jump point. "We've been told to hurry the trip, so we are boosting at max to the jump point. We'll be jumping in thirty minutes." I nodded. Sarah was snuggled into my side, and I was going to nap when the lieutenant in charge of the courier spoke. "Sorry sir. I have a call from Admiral Himmel for you and the...

The halls were a bit calmer. My journey to find Traci's office took me back to Colonel Newhart's office and I found him sitting somewhat peacefully. Since he no longer appeared hurried I stopped by. "Your investigation going well?" he asked. I pretended to ignore his comment. "I see that the emergency is over. I guess we could do that audit now." Colonel Newhart laughed. "You aren't here for that, and you don't have to pretend for me. Everyone already is speculating on your real...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 8 Castle Games

The brief baby boom ended eight days later and the population of our colony had increased by forty-eight children. Every one of the original thirty-seven female concubines gave birth although only Madison, one of Linus Van Stern's concubines, gave birth to twins. She was thrilled to have her third and fourth children and was soon offering to set up a day care and baby-raising clinic for any concubines needing a break. Her master simply glowed that he now had two sons and a new daughter to go...

"Is that even a rank?" Tiffany asked. "Who knows," Yvette responded while massaging her temples. "But from the attitude on that man, he believes it means quite a bit." Janice looked around. James was bringing Tina's lips to his when a voice I did not recognize started shouting. "Oh God! Oh God! James! James! We have a visitor! We have a visitor!" James paused and looked over at Bethany. She mouthed a name and he nodded. "Give me a report," he called out. "We have a jump point opening," the voice cried nervously. "The instruments say it's on a direct line with the Ursus system. One of the notes said that the last ship to arrive from that system was Nassau." James set...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 26 Another Show

After we finished feeding our children, Mickey, Cleo and I took them back to the cribs before we each grabbed some lunch. During our meal we talked a bit about the music we were playing. "I knew music like this existed, but this is more fun than I ever imagined," Mickey said. "And last night was ... wow! I could feel the way the audience reacted." Cleo nodded. "It is powerful. We need to be feeding that by playing our best." I blew out a raspberry. "More practice." The others...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 28 The Peace Ends

For the next week, every citizen had concubines hovering around him or her. If a citizen showed any fatigue, they were dragged back to their pods and forced to sleep. James and Yvette grumbled a bit about the concubines taking over, but the rest was definitely doing them good. Once again, gathering in our large recreation room became a popular pastime. Tyson, Terrence and Brad even came up with rules for three-person hockey. Teams were formed from a citizen and his concubines. Janice and...

I returned to our home hallways in time to catch James coming out of the command post. With Diana and Ingrid's help I cornered him in the hallway and ordered him to throw me over his shoulder and take me back to our home to ravish me. He did after telling the AI to order Bethany home. James did not really ravish me though. He jumped into the shower while Bethany and I fed our daughters and then pulled us into the hot tub for an hour of playful fun. Bethany held onto him at the end of that...

James jumped away from the laser and waved to Tina and me. "Head to the briefing room," he ordered us. Tina dashed off, but I waited among the hanging fabric panels that shielded the ready room from the spray designed to counteract the acid atmosphere as James walked toward the exit. "Who was that?" the major snapped as James approached the exit. I slipped a bit deeper but remained close enough to hear the conversation. "Sounded like Ulla," James said. "I've looked over the list of...

"Tam, Tif!" James shouted. "What brings you here? And what about the training?" "Madison wanted to go home and feed her son," Tiffany said. She was wearing a green hockey jersey. I looked at the logo and found that it was a wolf with a red cape in its mouth. "Diana and Ingrid took over," Tamara said as she skated up to James. Her jersey was the blue of Alice's dress and had a grinning Cheshire Cat as its logo. Their concubines were making their way onto the ice. None of them...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 59 Taking a Warrant to the Extreme

We could hear people in armor moving down the corridor. I started to prepare the teleport system for a second teleport. Janice turned towards the doorway. She had a smile on her face. Before she said anything, there was a loud roar that echoed through the tunnels. For a moment, the speakers for our communication system gave off static, and then I could hear the hollow hiss of a flechette rifle being fired. "James!" Reggie's voice ran out. "Someone just used some kind of shaped charge on...

"Heck, if you want we could provide video of most of it." "That would prove nothing!" Colonel Johanes snapped. "It would be doctored before you sent it." "How?" Tamara asked. The rest of that day was spent celebrating the survival of the colony. For James and my sister concubines, it was a time to reaffirm our bond and to relax together. For the first time in ages, James was not worried about anything. He lavished attention on each of us as we enjoyed our first break in a long time. That evening, the first repaired ships left the docks and headed off. Freya and Cardiff were the first to leave, but once they had left it seemed that a ship was departing every six...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 35 Naval Relations

The fighting outside seemed to die down after Ruth was so violently thrown back from our door. The AI reported that all small arms and explosives had been stripped from the armory and that only the morgue and battle armor were still secure. I had recommended that the AI find a way to disable the battle armor only to be informed by the AI that a rogue power surge had already fried a part of the armor electronics rendering it useless until repaired. We were pleased to hear that Ruth and Manuel...

Tina and I made our way to the doorway and headed out. It was clear that the conversation had turned to technical matters regarding the repairs and James would be tied up for some time. He waved as we left but was quickly pulled back to one of the panels to start reviewing the damage and suggested repairs to Tintagel Castle. In the hallway we found Alexis walking with a couple of the concubines from Tintagel. Both were wearing splints and bandages obviously created by tearing up a shift. She...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 11 Short Goodbyes

The next week it seemed I spent much of my time finding excuses to hide in the household pod or the Concubine's refuge. James had locked William in an otherwise unused habitat pod near the original command center, but the crew of Tintagel Castle proved to include nine more men who refused to keep their hands to themselves. Most of the concubines figured that out the first night when these men spent much of the welcome party drunkenly calling for Lindsay, Bonnie and Cleo to perform lap...

The departure of Freya brought peace to Ishtar. Janice continued to lead rehearsals of the musical. We now had a complete show that lasted just over seventy minutes. It was almost ready, and we were becoming increasingly worried that the secret would be revealed. Janice insisted that conversations about our work be kept to the Concubine's Refuge to prevent accidentally revealing our plans. The citizens seemed rather distracted though. James and Yvette seemed to spend hours in the command...

"I want to help him, but I can't move fast right now," she moaned as she put a hand on her very pregnant belly. "I felt the same the last weeks before giving birth," I admitted. "James understands." It seemed to take forever to make our way to the passage that used to separate our home from the maniacs who had been dropped on Ishtar with us. When we arrived, the informal guard kiosk stood empty in front of a closed pressure door. We paused to wait for the doors to open when a young female cried out. "Wait!" We turned to find Lily, the ten year old daughter of Linus, pushing a double stroller. I tried to figure out what the issue was as she came to a stop in front of us. "Esther...

Rising further, I was disturbed that James was not sharing the bed. Immediately I started to climb over Tina, who was lying by the edge of the bed. The loud blast of an alarm jerked me out of my sleep. I sat up in surprise and then looked around in confusion. Behind me, I could feel someone else move. I ended up rubbing my eyes a couple of times to clear them before I recognized where I was. The teleport room lights were now flashing a bright red as the siren continued to blare. "Quiet!" A Peril at IshtarChapter 9 A Visit from Yvette

Yvette was wearing a light and flowing dress that looked more appropriate for wearing on a summer day rather than in some climate controlled ship, but I was not going to say anything. I was more interested in the motley assortment of humanity accompanying her. Philippe was the first in the door after her. He was dressed, if you can call it that, in a loincloth and nothing more. He still seemed a bit unhappy, but it was clear that Yvette was continuing to support his inclusion in her...

To I think everyone's everlasting surprise the rest of the visit by the remnants of the Wolf attack was absurdly simple. I was alerted by the AI when the Jackson finally slipped into a repair bay about four hours after I crashed into bed, but Commodore Sprague had requested that the formal meeting be delayed until morning as his own crew was collapsing where they stood due to lack of sleep. So it was nearly ten o'clock local time when I finally walked into the briefing room to find Yvette,...

Lindsay and Ed have headed to our multi-use room and are going to set up to treat the non-critical cases there. Craig and Tom are setting things up there." "Maggie has the...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 15 Lessons from a Model Citizen

"Bit of a walk isn't it?" Tanya said with a smile. "It's outside the citizen zone," I admitted. "But you had wounded so we teleported you in at our command post. I'm not sure we have a teleport near here yet. This is new." "Will all my crew be here?" Tanya asked. "Probably not," I said. "The walking wounded you had were directed to one of the rooms we have near our medical center. If there are free pods they'll rotate the people through." Tanya nodded. "On that note, how...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 16 Gifts Exchanged

Bethany had my daughter on a changing table when I walked in. She smiled at me. "Don't worry, I don't mind changing babies. Especially when it's the child of my sister." She lifted Madoka up and carried her over to me. With a gentle touch she laid Madoka in my arms. I looked down at the child I had brought into the world. She was now just over two months old and still spent the majority of her time sleeping, but right then she was awake and reached out her tiny hands to grab at my...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 30 Emergency Measures

"You need to get that fire out!" I heard Timothy shout. "It's too close to your missile magazine." "The magazine is empty!" a female voice called back. "We shot everything during our breakout from Ursus!" "I'm not worried about an explosion," Timothy called back. "The smoke from that fire will be poisonous if it reaches the loading tubes. Those tubes contain heavy metals that you really don't want to breathe." "Everyone here is in suits!" the voice cried back. "We...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 40 Gifts of Rabbits

I held Brittany in my arms as the door to the skating rink opened. Esther and the male concubine Petey stepped into the hallway. Kitty immediately noticed the young man. "Oh, a loincloth. I like the look." Petey blushed and stepped a little away from Kitty, who immediately turned to Esther. "The AI suggested that Brit and I be here now. What's happening?" Esther sighed. "Let's just say that Governor Johanes offered us an extremely clear example of the kind of leadership he offers....

Crisis at IshtarChapter 45 Old Friends Spark New Feuds

In the command post, everyone continued their frantic work to help save the ships and their crews. I could hear Ulla and Tiffany talking with Captain Travis and Captain Gates. Ulla was a bit confused at one point, but Tiffany's quiet confidence kept her at her post. James had finally dragged Janice and me over to a padded chair. He flopped into the chair and I quickly pushed Janice into his lap. My sister concubine quietly held on to our master. I was looking around for another chair when...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 46 Visiting Captains

Bethany walked forward once Brad had left the room. I was puzzled by her action until she reached down to pick up something. It took just a moment for me to recognize that it was the uniform Captain Gates had been wearing when she first arrived. "We definitely should return that to her soon," I said. Bethany nodded, but made no move to exit the transporter room. Instead, she walked over to stand next to me at the control panel. I turned to ask her a question as the speakers started to...

Crisis at IshtarChapter 57 Official Notices

My opponent abandoned his attempt to take over the teleport pad after about twenty minutes. I stood at the controls, waiting for the next attack. I was checking to see if I could set up some filters to help limit the scope of the attacks when I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I froze, but a hand kept me from turning around. "Don't panic," I heard Brittany say. "I just didn't know how to get your attention. You were concentrating." The console signaled that another attempt...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 5 Family Bonding

The next morning found me sandwiched between Tina and Bethany. I sat up slowly to find Janice and Meiko in each other's arms on the other side of Bethany, sleeping. All my ladies were sleeping peacefully so I carefully climbed out of bed and took my time to look around the pod. Tina had commented that it was two-stories, but to the best of my knowledge none of us had really explored past the common room and the master bedroom. I took the time to check the upper floor and found that the pod...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 8 Planning the Colony

The door had barely finished opening when a dark haired missile charged me and pulled me inside, checking every inch of me for bruises as she did so. Meiko was so attentive and vigorous in her probing that I could not get a word in edgewise and soon was laughing as her light touches started to tickle me. My other ladies came over and I offered them all a group hug as Meiko started to calm down. "I'm fine," I said. "Well, you scared us," Bethany said. "And why did it take so long to...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 10 The Council Meets

Dinner was completed quickly, although clean up suffered, as both Bethany and Janice demanded their fair share of kisses and caresses. I did sneak out long enough to have the replicator produce the schoolteacher outfit for Bethany and a cheerleader vest and skirt for Janice. Meiko seemed disappointed until I pulled out the schoolgirl blouse and skirt that she put on while blushing, immediately receiving cries of approval from the others. I had to laugh, but wanted to sneak in another hour of...

A Peril at IshtarChapter 11 A visit with the Rabbits

There were no others in the corridor and Terrence started out with Yvette and the others. I escorted Donna the other direction, listening for any trouble ahead. "Do we really have rabbits on board?" Donna asked me as we stepped out into the corridor. "Everything I've heard suggests that the confederacy doesn't worry at all about anything except their warriors." We were almost to pod green seven and I smiled. "AI, are Brenda and Brittany awake? Will it be acceptable to visit?" Donna...
