I shook my head. “You believe I’m going to take advantage?”

“Other guys try all the time,” she said in a small voice.

I sighed. “We can do this here, where the others can see if you prefer.”

She looked around, looking a little scared of someone watching her. “Really?”

I watched her. “Either you trust me or you don’t,” I said and waited.

Cupps stared back at me. I could see the thought processes working through her eyes. She weighed what she knew of me against what she had experienced, and probably what the spells on her told her to feel, and I was not gaining any ground. I brought up her emotion board again. It threw sparks and somehow looked even more damaged than before. I moved in closer, studying it for changes. I moved around to look at the circuit board. I moved from one chip to another. Each one had indicators that told me their purpose.
