February/March 1981, Milford, Ohio

On Monday, Josh Richards found me before school.

“Steve, do you think you can teach me some Swedish and give me some pointers about Sweden before I leave?”

“Sure Josh! We can certainly do that. I have the books they used in my Swedish for Immigrants class. We can work through those during the second half of lunch after we finish eating. As for pointers, well, the most important thing I can tell you is to be a nice guy. It will pay big dividends with the girls.”

“Speaking of girls, Steve, Mary is, well, crazy!”

“Don’t I know it! Are you doing OK? These last couple of weeks have been a pretty big change in your life.”

“That’s true!” he chuckled. “I was really surprised when Mary asked me out. And I was shocked at what she wanted to do with me. But I’m not objecting! Everything is good! We’re not going steady or anything, but we’re seeing a lot of each other. And I see you and Kara are getting along pretty well.”

“We are, Josh. Things are going quite well.”

The warning bell rang, and we both walked quickly to our homerooms.

After school, I saw Doctor Mercer and let her know I’d need to be at rehearsals for the next five weeks. I promised to call her if I felt myself backsliding or needed her help.

The rest of the week was quiet. I started teaching Josh some basic Swedish during lunch, I was in the computer lab at the Junior High on Tuesday, went to dinner with Elyse on Wednesday, and was in the computer lab at the High School on Thursday.

On Friday, I had a dinner date with Joyce. Kara didn’t join us this time. While Joyce was preparing our meal, we talked about Kara.

“She’s a really nice girl,” Joyce said. “And she is beautiful. I feel like a dishrag next to her!”

“Joyce Abbadelli, you are gorgeous! Don’t sell yourself short!”

“We had a good chat about you while you took a walk last time, and Kara and I have talked on the phone a few times as well. I like her. I’m also jealous!”

“She didn’t mention that you’ve talked. I’m curious about what she’s said to you.”

“Just ‘girl talk’. Don’t worry. I haven’t said anything that’s going to get you in trouble. She does know that we’ve been intimate, and that I wouldn’t mind being intimate with you if the circumstances were different. She seems to trust us together, which I find interesting. I’m not sure I would trust you in the same circumstances, Steve Adams! I know your history all too well.”

“She knows a lot about it too,” I said. “But you have to admit that I’ve changed quite a bit in the last couple of years, between being in Sweden and my Senior year in High School.”

“You certainly have. And I’d say all those changes are for the good. The fact that you felt that you could commit to a relationship, an exclusive one at that, is a pretty important, and good, change. I just wish it had been me,” she said wistfully.

“We’ve discussed the future and we both know that if anything is going to come of this long term, it’s likely to be when we all get out of college. Neither you nor I are ready to make a lifetime commitment at this point. I believe you were the one who wanted to keep our relationship fairly mellow until we were ready.”

“That’s true,” Joyce said, “especially given your history, but that’s changing now. The other major roadblock is Jennifer. I know that Kara is aware of that, and it really hangs over any relationship of yours, like the Sword of Damocles. As long as you still think Jennifer is your destiny, anything else can really only be temporary. I don’t want to get my hopes up and get hurt. I’m actually concerned a bit for Kara. You’re her first relationship, and unless I miss my guess, you weren’t just her first love, but her first everything. Did she even kiss a guy before you?”

“No. She hadn’t kissed a guy before me,” I said. “She was as pure as the new-fallen snow.”

“Until you corrupted her!” Joyce giggled. “Sorry, I know that’s not quite accurate, but you do have a way of getting girls to drop their panties for you.”

“So I’ve been told,” I sighed. “With Kara, I made her wait a long time, actually. For exactly the reasons we’re talking about. I could easily have had her back in October, but it wasn’t until January. I insisted that we take our time and that she think about it.”

“That was a really smart move. And in talking to her, I don’t think she has any illusions about this being a lifelong commitment. Oh, she wants that, to be sure, and she’s quite sure that you are her future husband, but she also knows that most likely you two won’t be a couple all through college. In the end, she seems pretty practical. In that way, she’s like me and Elyse.

“All three of us have designs on you, but we’re also practical. Unless I miss my guess, Elyse is also in a holding pattern, waiting to see what happens with Jennifer. I suspect, like me, she wants to have sex with you, but she’s not going to do it until there is some kind of resolution.”

“That’s exactly right,” I said. “It’s also the case that, despite my history, I am exclusive with Kara at this point. She’s OK with me seeing you and Elyse as friends. She’s also totally cool with Bethany, being my best friend. In one sense, I think it comes from her being confident that we’re going to end up together in the long run.”

“What happened with you and Bethany? You guys were pretty hot and heavy last Fall.”

“What’s the phrase? ‘Irreconcilable differences’? She and I simply couldn’t continue like we were, and rather than let it go to a point where we completely ruined our relationship, we decided to be best friends again. It’s working pretty well at this point. She and Kara and Stephanie all get along really well, and, as you’ve noticed, my life is fairly calm and stable.”

Joyce put dinner on the table and I poured some wine. We sat down to eat, and as usual, her cooking was out of this world. We finished eating and were cleaning up when we heard some kind of commotion in the hallway.

“Do you hear that yelling?” Joyce asked.

I did, and I felt a dagger of fear stabbing my chest. The voice sounded very familiar. So familiar, in fact, that my heart started racing. I knew there was a chance of this happening at some point, and it was happening today.

“Yeah. That sounds like my mom,” I said angrily.

“What are you going to do?” Joyce asked.

“Well, I’m going to get her out of the hallway. She’s going to have an absolute field day on this one. But there’s not much we can do. I know her well enough that she won’t leave until she finds me. I’m sure she saw my car out front.”

“Oh hell,” Joyce said with a sigh.

“Yeah.”

I went to the door and opened it and looked down the hall. Mom was pounding on the door of the apartment next door.

“Mom. Stop! I’m in here,” I said.

She turned, red-faced, and walked down the hall to stand in front of me.

“And just what do you think you’re doing, Stephen?” she shouted.

“I’m having dinner with my friend, Joyce. You’ve met her. She’s the granddaughter of my boss, Larry’s grandfather, which makes her Larry’s cousin.”

“Having dinner? I doubt it!” she said with a sneer.

“Mom, come in here before someone calls the cops. I’m surprised they haven’t with the way I heard you carrying on.”

She stepped in and I shut the door.

“What is this place? Is this your apartment, you little slut?” mom growled at Joyce, who recoiled but kept her temper from flaring.

“Mom, I’ve warned you about calling my friends that name. We were having dinner. In fact, we’re just cleaning up the dishes. As for who the apartment belongs to, it belongs to Andreas, my boss from the deli. He works for Larry’s grandfather and he lets us use it like we are tonight. Joyce cooked dinner for me. Period. She and I are not having sex.”

“You have sex with every girl you are with, Stephen. Stop lying!”

“Mrs. Adams,” Joyce said firmly, “excuse me, but I am not sleeping with your son. We dated a bit almost two years ago, but I am absolutely not having sex with him. And frankly, I do not appreciate you calling me a slut.”

“It’s what you are,” Mom shrieked. “It’s the only kind of girl my son goes out with. Now keep out of this!”

“You called me a slut,” Joyce said firmly. “YOU brought me into the conversation, Mrs. Adams.”

“Joyce, let it go, please.”

Joyce nodded, and I turned to Mom.

“Mom, stop it. Keep your voice down or the neighbors will call the police. You’ll be the one in trouble at that point.”

“You think so, Stephen? You think you can have sex here with this girl who is over eighteen when you are still a minor?”

I was over the age of consent, but I wasn’t going to argue with her on the point. It really didn’t matter because Joyce and I were not having sex and hadn’t had sex for almost two years.

“There’s no sex, mom. None. Joyce and I are good friends. Whatever bizarre fantasy you have in your mind is simply not true. I come here with Joyce once or twice a month and she cooks me dinner. We talk and have a good time. Then she goes home. We do not have sex.”

“You’re coming with me right now, young man.”

“No, I’m not. I’ll be home before curfew. You know, as I always am. I’m spending time with my friend and when we’re done, we’ll leave and I’ll be home. Not one minute before. Just leave. I have nothing more to say to you.”

“Your father will hear about this, young man!”

“Hear about what? That a friend of mine cooked me dinner, and I enjoyed her company? That she and I have a platonic relationship? That my steady girlfriend knows I’m here and is not worried about it? Forget it Mother Dearest, there is nothing you can do. And, in less than six months, I’ll be out of the house.

“You can have your party then, celebrating how you got rid of your horrible, terrible son. You know, the one with the steady job, a business, a car, a scholarship that covers a good part of his tuition, straight A’s and who is respected by everyone except by you? Go on; go pat yourself on the back for being so self-righteous. Just don’t forget the fact that you weren’t a virgin when you got married and that you had sex before you met dad.”

She slapped me hard across the face. I just stared hard at her.

“You will not speak to me that way, Stephen!”

“I just did. And I’ll continue speaking this way if you continue to treat me and my friends the way you are treating us now. You’ll notice as well that I’m perfectly calm. You, on the other hand, are hysterical and out of control. I’m very comfortable and happy with my life. Yours seems to be a very sad existence, because it’s based on trying to ruin mine. I won’t let you do that. I won’t let you control me. Just go home.”

“We’ll see what your father says!” she said, storming out and slamming the door behind her.

“Oh my God!” Joyce exclaimed. “Did I just see and hear that?”

“I told you before she was nuts, Joyce. She’s called most of the girls I know sluts to their face if they’ve come to my house. That’s why I don’t invite them over very often. This all started when I was fourteen and decided that I couldn’t live with the kind of control she wanted to exert. Fortunately, my dad is far more reasonable.”

“What will he say about this?”

“Privately? Or to my mom?” I chuckled.

“He has to walk a tightrope, doesn’t he?” Joyce said.

“Yes, that’s for sure. Dad has a tough situation given, as best I can tell, he loves her and won’t leave her. Once I’m gone, she’ll calm down, the same as she did when I was in Sweden.”

“What about your brother and sister?”

“Jeff kisses her ass. He’s got her fooled, though, because he pretends to be the model son. She eats it up, too. As for Stephanie, she walks a very, very fine line, staying just on Mom’s good side. My dad won’t let my mom separate us, even though she’s tried.”

“That’s nuts!” Joyce declared.

“It is. Come on, let’s finish cleaning up.”

We did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen, then sat down with cups of coffee Joyce had made.

“What will happen when you get home?” Joyce asked.

“Oh, the usual hysterics. Dad will talk to me and everything should be OK. She’ll try to ground me or find some way to keep me from coming here. If things follow a past pattern, nothing will come of it but some more yelling.”

“You did say some pretty harsh things to her, Steve. Especially that stuff about her having had sex before she got married.”

“I keep bringing that up because it’s exactly the thing she condemns me for. What really set her off before was when she called Jennifer and Debbie V sluts and I pointed out to her that given each of them had had exactly one sex partner, which was less than the number she’s had. She is, fundamentally, a hypocrite.

“I get part of it. If I understand the situation correctly, she met my dad in Las Vegas, they had sex, she got pregnant, they had to get married and then she had a miscarriage. I was born sixteen months after they got married, and if you allow time for recovery from the miscarriage, it seems pretty clear that it’s very likely that I’m right. And that has her freaked out, I guess.

“Ever since I was caught by two sets of parents in December of ‘77, she’s been on a rampage, and it’s only gotten worse over the years. I had hoped being away for a year would change things, but it really hasn’t. So I’m basically biding my time until I can leave for college. I plan to get an apartment in Chicago and stay there. I’ll come back here to visit, but I’ll certainly stay with friends rather than at my house.”

“Two sets of parents? I would have to agree that’s a little much!”

“Actually, once was with Becky. We were in bed, but we hadn’t had sex and weren’t going to have sex because I refused to do it with her at that point. So even though I got ‘caught’, so to speak, I wasn’t having sex. We did later, as you well know. The other time was with my friend Mary. There we basically got caught red-handed. Her parents weren’t absolutely sure, because we were fully clothed when they saw us, but the circumstantial evidence was quite damming!” I chuckled.

“A lot of things make more sense now,” Joyce said. “I know for sure that grandfather would let you stay at his house. He has plenty of room. All you need to do is ask him.”

“I’m sure! And I know that Melanie’s parents would let me stay there as well. So there are options. Let’s drop this, though. I don’t want to ruin the rest of the night.”

We spent another hour or so drinking coffee and talking. Around 8:30pm, we carried the cooler down to her car and then we exchanged a deep kiss.

“I’m happy Kara is fine with kisses like that!” Joyce said with a big smile. “It’s like a promise of coming attractions!” she giggled.

“We’ll see. A lot has to happen before we could take that step again.”

“I know. I won’t violate Kara’s trust, and neither will you. Are we getting together with her in two weeks?”

“That’s the plan!”

We hugged and got in our cars. I watched Joyce pull away and then put the car in gear to drive home and face the wrath I knew was coming. When I walked into the house, Stephanie grabbed my arm.

“She’s on the warpath, Steve.” Stephanie whispered. “Be careful!”

“Don’t worry, Squirt,” I replied quietly. “There really isn’t much she can do.”

I hung up my jacket and walked straight to my dad’s office, shutting the door behind me.

“Well, Mom, are you happy? You made yourself look like a fool to the other people in the apartment building and, more importantly, to Joyce.”

“Do not speak to me that way, Stephen!”

“Dad, did she give you the full story? About how she was pounding on doors and screaming at people? How she called Larry’s cousin, the granddaughter of my boss, a slut? How she insisted that we were having sex when no such thing happened? That she’s lucky nobody called the police about her?”

“This is not about me, young man!” my mom said.

“Judy, did you do those things?”

“Ray, I had to find him! What was I supposed to do? He was shacked-up in that apartment with a girl who is over eighteen!”

“Steve, go find something to do,” Dad said.

“What?!” Mom wailed. “Ray!”

I didn’t wait to hear an answer. I left the room, shutting the door behind me. I went to my room and a few seconds later, Stephanie appeared at the door.

“That was fast! What happened?”

“Mom didn’t provide the whole story, which shouldn’t surprise you. So I simply mentioned that she was pounding on doors and screaming at people and was lucky the neighbors didn’t call the cops. I also mentioned that she called Joyce a slut to her face.”

“Wow! So then what?”

“Dad was obviously shocked and told me to leave. I suspect he’s letting Mom know just how unhappy he is with her behavior. I’m sure he’ll have something to say to me, but I don’t think anything bad is going to happen. I didn’t yell at mom, though I did make sure I got the whole ‘not a virgin when she met Dad’ thing into the conversation so Joyce could hear. That really set Mom off.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office.
