The pack with the cups was beside the door.
The sky was getting dark, and I knew that a storm was coming. The air was getting chilly, too. This time of year there could be snow just as easily as rain, even if we were going through an unaccustomed warm spell.
The babies were quiet, and the first two were even sleeping. It was kind of special, knowing with my mind as well as my eyes. "Susan? Will you watch the children and Kitten, while Chris and I go into the mountain to feed these people?"
"Yes, but what do you mean into the mountain?"
"As Kitten said; it's a base of some sort, that takes up all of Beaver Mountain. I've only been in there twice, and it is big! Later, we can all go and investigate. I have to leave now, for a while."
Chris placed her sleeping charge on the bed, beside the baby's mother. She took off the milk dispenser and said, "Is there a way of removing the fine hair here, so the tape will not hurt when it comes off?"
Susan and I looked at her. This was the first time she had actually spoken to us. Her voice was different, and more vibrant than Kitten's. She looked at us wondering why we had thought that, for all of her people could speak this way.
Susan tried her own mental communication, "Henry has a razor, and I will be happy to help you. I think I may have to do the same thing, myself."
I heard both sides of the conversation, and was happy that I could both send and receive, with another Human.
Chris followed me, to get dressed. "I know you are not used to clothes, but it is getting cooler, and you have to wear this."
I handed her Susan's snowmobile suit. It was there, from last winter. I helped her into the suit, and gave her the boots she had used to come here. The weather was too warm for me to wear similar clothing, but Chris was used to a much warmer environment.
Chris helped me carry the soup to the truck. I put it in the back, where she crawled in to steady it. Dog clambered for his run, but I didn't want him around new people. They might be afraid of him. Even worse, he might consider them an enemy.
The trip was slow, to keep Chris and the soup from falling. I think she found the uncomfortable clothing appropriate now. The pot was difficult to get through the corrugated tube. Chris and I had to push and pull, together. The flashlight from the truck provided enough illumination to see. We descended to the main level, and put the pot down. "Chris, you had better talk to them. Tell them to only eat half of a cup of soup, but do it every two hours or so. Do you understand?"
She nodded her head.
"Do they have enough to drink, here?" Again, I got an affirmative nod. "I think I'd better leave. They may look on me now, as a danger. You can tell them that I wouldn't hurt them for the world." She looked at me as if giving a reply, but I 'heard' nothing. "What's wrong? I can't hear you."
Chris tried again, but much harder. I got the feeling that the children formed a bridge, allowing me to hear well. "You still have to talk to them. Do you want me to go outside, or home?"
I got another nod from her.
"How long will you be? I can wait by the tube, or go home. What do you want?" I got the feeling to go home. That she would return when she could. I stepped forward, and hugged her tightly, then kissed her lips. She returned it tentatively. She was learning. I was reluctant to leave, but remembered that she'd lived here long before I came along. With a final farewell, I returned home. Distant flashes told me that rain was coming. Thankfully, there would be no snow, yet.
Susan, dressed only in her panties, met me at the door. She asked how it went.
"I had to let Chris do it alone. I could not hear her very well. Apparently, the children do something that makes the telepathy work better. Probably, the same is true for you. How are Kitten and the children doing?"
"They're fine. They're just sleeping, now. Where are we going to put the nursery?"
I had not thought anything of it, yet. Trust a woman to bring up the practical points. Security was my major concern. Guests could find a nursery, or for that matter the children, and then they would start asking questions. The door could be locked. But the sound of a crying child, would start the fall of this tower of cards. What's more, the heavy food consumption would get tongues wagging as well. "The den is the closest room that we can use for a nursery. It will be locked, if somebody comes over. The rec room, downstairs, has heavy curtains. It will make a good bedroom. Susan said, "Her people are called Tandra. They came from a different world, a very long time ago. The men went out, and altered Earth primate's genetic make-up. Some of their own genetic material was added to the primate's to increase many different things. The result being large bright Tandra/Human offspring popping up. After a while, they took over the Earth. Eventually, one found his way back into their base."
"You mean we are all part Tandra?"
"That's what I said. Even Chris is Tandra. She underwent a procedure so that she could work on space equipment, strengthening her employment prospects. Kitten says, she will breed as a biped, like any other Tandra or us, for that matter. Are you going to ask me?"
"Are we going to set a date then, darling?"
"I think I will leave that to you. Any time will do. Susan, would you still consider marrying this old man. I have loved you forever, and will continue to do so. My life was once my own to give, but now I have taken on other commitments. Will you still accept me?"
"Oh, Henry! Why are you saying that?"
"I was just giving you another chance to back out. I want you more than life itself. But I don't want to hold you to an old agreement, when all our world is 'turned on its ear'."

"Does that mean you will still marry me?"
