"General Santos, you asked for the latest photos."
The General was passed a manila envelop containing satellite images of Vandenberg Air Force Base. For the last week Vandenberg had been under close surveillance. A night time aerial photo sweep was taken viewing heat sources. The base was photographed, showing fuzzy images of bodies. Over the next days the daytime sweeps showed nothing. At night however, the ghosted bodies appeared. This had caught the attention of those watching the quarantined zones. It was a clue about what was going on.
This latest stream of photos had caught multiple explosions and many more bodies. Those photographed had two different body temperatures. Many of the bodies were colder than others. The lens picked up on temperatures that were around seventy degrees, hazy forms considering they were almost the temperature of the air.
"Thank you, Sergeant, you're dismissed?" The sergeant saluted and walked out of the general's temporary office. Santos reached for his phone, a direct line to General Russell's office. Russell has been on the Joint Chiefs of Staff for ten years. He had seen two presidents come and go. It was Russell who had brought this mission to Santos.
"Russell."
"General Russell, it's Santos, I have confirmed reports of Vandenberg insurgents."
"That was quite a sentence Santos, must have taken a lot out of you. Listen closely to me. There is a lot going on right now, too much for you to be mucking around with. All satellite signals out of the zone have been blocked. You have prevented anyone from coming out and spreading stories. I have orders from the highest authority that we are to forget about the area. We will not allow you to go charging in to 'reclaim' anything. Your official orders are to quarantine Southern California and prevent anyone from entering. We are no longer concerned with evacuation."
"Sir, aren't you worried about the public?"
"We are dealing with the public already Santos. It has been 'leaked' that 'terrorists were able to infiltrate Los Angeles and set off chemical weapons. The weapon affects humans neurologically. We are still trying to determine exactly what it is. We were unable to save any of the people beyond the first wave. Those that were infected went crazy and attacked their neighbors. The area is uninhabitable and will remain toxic and quarantined for the next several years.' It's all taken care of."
"What do you mean unable to save any of the people? There are still people inside."
"No, General, there aren't, and you better remember that."
"... You're right General, there aren't any people left. The inhabitants fled or died."
"Good, I knew you were the right man for the job. You make certain we don't have to deal with any surprises and at the next review I will guarantee you another star. The army can always use a good soldier who knows his priorities."
"Thank you very much, sir."
"And Santos, don't screw this up. If something needs containing you do it. I don't want excuses. I didn't choose a man with the nickname 'machinegun' because I liked how it sounded. You do your job. There were no survivors. You understand me?"
"Sir, yes sir."
Hunter scouts had been scattered about the terrain. Those furthest out reported in when they heard the sounds of twenty thousand beating wings. They saw the sources of those sounds moments later, drawing back from the oncoming mass. A swarm of setaros, uncountable in the night air, flew overhead. They quickly overtook the Hunters, not even noticing them.
Thunder and dust bellowed from the mass below the setaros. Running, scrambling feet carried tens of thousands of demons. The night air was filled with the dust stirred up by the throng of demons. The dust was caught in the air by those flying above. Like a thick shroud it blocked out the moon, pitching the night into an even darker blackness. The sheet spread out, blinding anyone unable to see the heat a body produces.
The deafening arrhythmic beating rolled off the oncoming cloud. It carried over the radios and echoed into the base as the Hunters reported their sightings to Drake. Demon and nuishii alike felt the ripples in the Consensus as Kaan's host thundered forward.
The combined armies of Hunters and vampires formed a defense. Drake stood in the foreground with his companions. They stood against the oncoming army knowing they were watching their death approach. Heartened by the thought that their sacrifice would serve the best cause, the gathered clans shifted about, a serious but light feeling through the air. Aaisha had promised her life for Tiro's family. The clans would fight for their empress. They would fight for their future. They would fight for their duty.
A precursor to the storm began. The first wave of demons launched themselves against the gathered army. Setaros flew down from the sky like hail pellets. The small demons were shot out of the air by the Hunters bullets. Others were met from below by Aaisha's vampires. Bursts of light from gun fire brightened the darkened night. This was a poor fight for warriors like the Hunters. They were excellent marksmen, trained to choose their shots carefully. Against this swarm where one body was almost indistinguishable from another the Hunters were hard pressed to make clean shots on single targets. Those with automatics were prone to opening fire as fast as they could find a target.
Demons swarmed in from all angles. The second wave, the kulghas had arrived. The Hunters unloaded all of their ammunition into the mass of monsters. Demons fell to ground in every direction, their life draining out. Drake emptied his last clip on the nearing mass of kulghas. He felt the dive of a setaros pack as they attacked. He dropped his rifle, pulling his revolvers out. One shot after another he turned the heads of his attackers into caves. Seven went down. He turned to the left as he felt another near. The setaros was swooping down to grab him. He swung his left revolver, emptying it into the demon. It was moving too fast, the gunshots doing nothing to slow it. Drake jumped out of the way, coming to his feet as it crashed into the ground.
The Hunter looked around the base. Everywhere he looked, demons were fighting. His Hunters fought against demons with blade and gun and belief. They fought beside vampires, against kulghas and setaros. The battle started with a form. The Hunters and their companions had formed a circle where they could protect each other. They fought together against a force out numbering them easily twenty to one. When the original circle of their defense was broken, smaller groups formed. In many places the battle had deteriorated into one warrior horribly outnumbered by monsters.
A spurt of blood splashed onto Drake's face. No more than two feet away from him a body hung in the air. The setaros had been pulled out of its dive, all of its inertia evaporating around the arm sticking through its chest. Sinbad towered over the body of the smaller demon, blood dripping off his hand. Seeing that his action had caught Drake's attention he looked the Hunter in the eyes. Drake's expression said 'thanks'. Sinbad simply shrugged.
"If you two are finished playing, there are more to kill." Aaisha laughed. Drake and the two vampires formed a powerful team. Drake fought with all of his weapons, physical and nuishii. Aaisha plucked the energy evaporating from the dead, forming it into terrifying lances. She spread her wrath in all directions around the battle. Most anything struck by her attack died instantly. Sinbad with his strength and incredible speed moved everywhere at once. He protected his empress from any physical threat, single strikes killing kulghas and setaros alike.
The battle raged around them, demons fighting against the more powerful vampires and the fearsome Hunters. The tide of demons slowed, stopped by the wall of warriors. The storm had more to send. The ground, slick with blood, cluttered with bodies, thundered and shook as the third wave of the assault broke. Kazikaan launched into the fray. Drunk with blood, their savagery was fueled by their hunger. Among them Kaan himself started his feeding.
Waves of power surged off the ancient vampire as he moved about the field. He killed indiscriminately. No one was safe if they were within his sight. Bullet holes appeared in his body as the snipers tried to take him out. His head split open from one round. All of his wounds healed nearly as fast as they were inflicted. With every life he took he regained any power he lost in the taking. He went about the battle aimlessly killing. He was unstoppable in his rage.
Five bodies flew through the air. Tim had a girl under each of his arms. Another two flew slightly behind him, wrapped up in a telekinetic arm. He landed at the main entranceway, releasing the girls. The four girls fell to the ground, barely moving. They had all slipped into unconsciousness during the flight.
Four Hunters ran out from the entrance to help bring in the girls. Tim picked Crystal up, and the others were carried in by Hunters. The fourth trailed slightly behind, making sure that no one had followed. The girls were carried to the third floor and directly to the medical center. Each was set on a bed, the attending doctor moving from one to the next. Tim stayed as the doctor checked Crystal. He made certain she was before he left.
"Welcome back, Tiro." Gina had taken over base operations while the main body of Hunters was away. She was working with Eagle, a respected Hunter from New York. Eagle had brought with him a large contingent of Hunters from the East Coast.
"Thanks," Tiro lifted the headset sitting on the control panel. "Drake, this is Tiro, my family is safe."
"Good, any time you want to come and help us would be great."
"I am on the way... and Drake, thank you."
"I just heard from the Ioshari, he is on the way."
"I was worried he would miss the fun."
"Shut up Sinbad."
"Yes ma'am"
"Drake, let him know that we are full committed and will need his help. Sorry boys, doesn't look like we are getting out of this one easily,"
"Who said we expected to leave, my empress?"
Aaisha was silent, contemplating Sinbad's response. Sinbad had always been at her side. Whenever she had needed anything he was there. He was her Iosage; her informant; her confidant. At times, he was her lover. Overcome by very human emotions, the vampire empress stepped up her attacks. Lances of energy flew from her hands, incinerating anyone they touched. Another second passed, another fifty lives were lost.
The battle had continued to rage around the three as they traded their banter. Wave after wave of demons crashed against the defending groups. The triad of leaders was attacked with the most gusto. Sinbad fought with a deadly jest behind every movement, ripping the tongue from one demon out through its neck while stabbing another in the chest with his other hand. Sinbad wasted no words on taunts, saving them for his companions. He fought fiercely for his empress and her duty.
Drake had long since run out of ammunition and had summoned his sword. He lay about severing appendages or anything else in reach. He had reached out with his mind, demanding a thread of the Consensus to his control. He lashed it around the battlefield like an impossibly long whip. When the strand contacted anything it acted with the Consensus' full force. That demon was disintegrated as the power of all combined human belief demanded its lack of existence. Demons don't exist. The world constantly is rejecting anything that isn't supposed to exist. With a direct link to the Consensus even those powerful enough to resist the repulsion are repealed. Only the most powerful of demons can withstand an onslaught like a direct connection to the Consensus.
Following Drake's example, Hunters joined their power to harness links of the Consensus. Vicious tendrils of energy whipped around the base. They connected to demons, tearing them apart. The lines did more than kill the demon linked. Under the force of the combined wills a demon was completely destroyed. It left no body. There was no blood to show its passing. Male or female, setaros, kulghas, or kazikaan, the lines were indiscriminate.
Kaan himself was struck by a link. He felt its draining force. He felt the will telling him he didn't exist. He felt his body start to dissipate. He felt the pain, and ignored it. Sending his own will against the Consensus he shrugged off the link, passing it on. Angered by the attempt on his life, Kaan launched himself into the deepest part of the chaos. He had killed enough weak vampires. He had drunk the life from enough Hunters. It was time for the main course.
An explosion knocked the three leaders of the resistance apart. Kaan landed in the middle of where they had stood. Sinbad was the first on his feet. He launched himself at the ancient vampire. His arms moved impossible fast as he struck blow after blow. Kaan was knocked back a few steps beneath the onslaught. The punches were strong and carried a lot of power.
Three steps backward, Kaan started moving faster. He gathered the energy around him and began blocking. He avoided some strikes and took the others. None of the ones that struck seemed make any sort of impression.
Out of fear, Sinbad pushed harder and faster than he had gone before. He lashed out again and again. A leg caught Kaan in a sweep, knocking him to the ground. Sinbad formed a spike of energy around his right hand, punching it down for Kaan's chest. He hoped to end everything here.
Kaan grabbed the hand reared for the strike. Forcefully he shoved it to pass between their bodies. It slashed through the air in between them, creating a rift. The rift quickly closed as the rest of Sinbad's hand carried on, making almost a full circle. Sinbad was turned around by the force of the counter. His bracing arm gave way and he fell on top of Kaan.
Sinbad's back was pressed to Kaan's chest. His arm was held outstretched across his neck. Kaan reached out with his right hand, forcing Sinbad's head more closely against his arm. The older vampire leaned in to bite deeply into Sinbad's neck from behind. Sinbad struggled against the demon's hold on him. He couldn't breath. He couldn't break free.
"Leave my Iosage alone." Aaisha's stamping foot smashed into Kaan's head. Teeth were shattered and a skull was broken. The cement beneath the struggling vampires cracked beneath the blow. Kaan's grip went slack and Sinbad leapt away.
Aaisha wasted no time. She created a powerful burst of energy, sending it directly into the cavity her foot had made of Kaan's head. Flesh sizzled and burned as the bolt ran its course. Kaan's body shuddered and lay still.
"Thank you, my empress. Again I owe you my life."
"What would mine be like without you Sinbad? I was saving myself from boredom."
The two fondly looked at each other, sharing a smile. They stepped back into the fight. Without Kaan driving them the kulghas started losing heart. With enough pressure they would flee. The two vampires knew just how to pressure them.
Drake gathered himself to his feet. He made his way back to Aaisha, his battle senses at their peak. Drake tried to keep track of everyone around him. He watched their movements, seeing trails behind them as the bodies moved and changed places. He predicted movements based on those paths he saw in front. The nuishii was fully joined with the Consensus. He was the first to notice Kaan's movement.
Kaan's head came back together. Bones mended. Burned skin regenerated. Hair grew back. The vampire stood to his feet, focusing on the woman who had just tried to kill him.
Drake turned as he felt Kaan move. He watched in slow motion as the vampire launched forward. The demon glowed with life energy, stolen from those nearby. Kaan picked up speed as he charged.
"NO!" Drake yelled out. He acted without thinking, his instincts leading him. He reached out with his mind and grasped the nearest strands of the Consensus. He pulled them tightly together and strengthened them with his own energy. The Consensus was weaker here than in a large city, there were fewer humans to muddle everything up with their beliefs. The web had been strained considerably lately. He forced the threads to take in more energy, filling them with life energy.
Kaan reached Aaisha as Drake was working. She had turned when she heard Drake's yell and was partially prepared for the strike. Kaan's fist slammed into her stomach, breaking two ribs and bursting a lung. She hit the ground a few feet away, gasping for breath as she healed.
The Betrayer didn't allow her to recover. He created a spike of glowing energy in his hands one step and he stabbed it into Aaisha's chest. The spike didn't get close enough to Aaisha to hurt her. Sinbad slammed his body into Kaan in mid-strike. The two of them tumbled to the side.
Kaan rolled the two over as they fell. He landed on top of Sinbad, his right hand plummeting in. The bones of Sinbad's rib cage shattered at the first hit. Kaan didn't stop there. He kept pounding into Sinbad's chest, — five, six, seven — after ten strikes all that was left was a bloody mess of flesh, much like pounded dough in character.
Aaisha struggled to her feet and charged at Kaan. She kicked at him to dislodge him from Sinbad. He took the hit in the stomach and folded around the leg, grabbing it with his hands. A sharp tug brought Aaisha to the ground. Instantly Kaan was on her. His hands were everywhere, breaking bones, clawing at flesh. He broke both of her legs in multiple places. Her arms were pulled out of their sockets before they were broken.
When she stopped struggling he picked her up and threw her twenty feet away, smiling at the sound her ruined body made when it squished into the ground. She moved a little, struggling to heal, catching his eye with the motion. Kaan laughed, "You ready for round two empress?"
Kaan charged the quivering body on the ground. This time he would make certain she wasn't recognizable. She still had a lot to pay for before he killed her.
The shield Drake had been building became complete. He had finally gotten it ready. Drake threw the shell around the empress, strengthening the point in front of Kaan's charge. Drake hoped the shield would be enough to give Aaisha time. He focused his energy into it, making certain it would remain strong.
Kaan reached the shield as it finished settling around Aaisha. His fingers were outstretched, his nails hardened and sharpened. His stabbing hand touched the shield and it held him back. Air exploded around the two powerful vampires from the power behind his strike.
"This pitiful shield will not save you bitch. Lilah killed you before. It's my turn. I will not be denied."
I am so tired of all the bullshit about vampires. Yes… we do exist, so that’s not a myth, but all the rest… well, the crap people think they know about us is mostly nonsense. Firstly, we do not live thousands of years long. Around two hundred years is as good as it gets for us. Fortunately, we do not age and all mature vampires look like they are in their mid-twenties. This, of course, is a great advantage and sets us apart from boring humans. In addition, unlike humans, Vampires are also...

Blood Lust The winter wind howled fiercely as I made my way back to the town tavern. Pulling my tattered top coat tightly around my neck. Deathly afraid to be late for my meeting with my mysterious benefactor. I think about the night before last while sitting alone at the rear of the noisy dark tavern Counting my dwindling money and wondering how I would live and survive in this strange new world in...
From the writings of Aarcidmus, high archivist and lord researcher to High Emperor Sedimer'tiskoniar: Milord has been obsessed as of late. His only concern is the weakness that has been spreading. The sickness seemed to come from nowhere, and yet, minor cases of it have been appearing in my research dating back several imperials. The weaker lords have been becoming ill and dying. The weak have vanished. The powers all demon kin has been weakening over time. I have not been able to make a...
I was thinking what a pathetic life... I didn't see the car in front of me until I was nearly on top of it. Dim flashers through the snow caught my eye and I was able to slow enough to avoid hitting it. I wondered, as I slowly passed by if anyone was inside. I could not make out anything but the outline of the car. As I drove past I saw the lights flash faintly in the mirror. There was someone in the car. I slowed and started backing towards it. I'm not in the habit of stopping for...
Paul showed up early the following day to his new job, eager for a new beginning. No longer would he be an alpha, and worse case scenario he could at least pretend to be normal. When the first dogs came in, he began their check ups, trying to hide the fact that he could hear them. He succeeded as far as the police were concerned, the dogs however knew better. Watching his every move they reacted to his every word and intention as if they clearly understood, and indeed they did. In an odd way...
1590 Very few things in the world had the power to frighten Electra. Her master's wrath happened to be one of them. And even that was usually only enough to make her take a step back and bow her head. Right now she shrunk down to the floor, positively cowering. Dracula's shadow aura was practically causing the whole keep to tremble with his rage. "Dost thou dare presume to insult my intelligence, Electra?" "No milord," Electra responded weakly. "I spoke only truth to you." "Then...
Her hair is like blood, her eyes violet jewels And she governs the fates of all whom she rules. Her voice is of silk, but her words are of steel. Look in her eyes, and your fears become real. A blossom of blood, with thorns that can kill, She will bend all your dreams to the ways of her will. Her beauty is pure as the clear driving rain, But to enter her world will bring only pain. BLOODLINES 3: BATS ALL IN LEATHER I was growing extremely disillusioned with the LAPD. Here I had been hiding in my (recently deceased) Uncle Gregory's decaying Hollywood mansion for almost three weeks and STILL they had not discovered the body of Rick Herzog. I mean... what in the Nine Billion Hells of Nyarlathotep are we paying taxes for? I was almost tempted to grab the first cop I saw and drag him over to Rick's apartment. Saner council prevailed, however. And I soon realized...
What is the nature of demons? Are they the demons case down by god, the spawn of Satan, as humans tend to believe? Do they come from a different world? What are they? Demons come from all over the worlds. They are dimension travelers, but most specifically, they are beings that feed off of life. They are parasites. There are few that know the true origin of demons, most of them being the first demons. Some of them are still alive. Stories claim that the demons came originally from a harsh...
My name is Jackson Shaw; at least that is what I call myself now. I have gone by many names over the ages. I am a vampire. I was turned the year the great pyramid was completed. Yes, I am over 2000 years old, ancient even by vampire standards. I have lived in the shadows for most of recorded human history. I say human history because it has been a long time since the title human could be associated with me. Time teaches all to he who has the luxury of eternity. And what the ages have taught me...
SupernaturalI made my way from the inn to the market east of there, where Clive had said they had been ambushed. When I arrived, there was a bustle of activity, normal for a market of this size, as well as a grouping of soldiers on the far side. I suspected that was where the attack had transpired. I weaved my way through the crowd until I arrived at the other side, where three soldiers were investigating the area. “Good afternoon gentlemen, what exactly happened here? Do you have any idea who did...
Six years ago... It was almost midnight. Brad and Ritchie had already retreated to their tents; Anthony was alone. Aside from the chirping of crickets and the crackle of his campfire, it was quiet. The pale light of the moon danced eerily on the ripples of the lake. He sat calmly in front of the fire, gazing out around the darkness of the woods. She was out there. He was certain he'd seen her once already. Last night when they got back from their hike he was certain for a split second...

Chapter Three: The Angel of Death I had no fear for my life, if he had wanted to kill me he would have already. I realized that the warm feeling I had been getting was him feeding on me, but I was confident in my assessment that he wouldn’t make me his next victim. He wanted me to panic, to flee and leave him, but I couldn’t. instead I leaned forward and embraced him. He became very shocked at my reaction. ‘Who made you the way you are?’ I asked. ‘I have never told this story before,’ he...
Blood Sword by Eddie Glover Brenlan felt the familiar twinge in his body. He reached for the sword he'd brought back from the east, the sword to which he was cursed. "That's a hell of a sword!", the bartender whistled in admiration. Brenalan turned with a frown, "You have no idea of it's strangeness or powers my friend.". He could now feel the sword's pull and the beginnings of his own change. "Help!", a woman screamed from outside. "Damn! It's about time I was...
Blood Sword 2 by Eddie Glover Brenlan watched from the shadows as the men he'd been tracking approached a lone woman. He'd long suspected that these men were mercenaries, just the kind of scum he'd been looking for. The sword began to vibrate in his hand, letting him know that it would soon be needing the blood he so often gave it. Should he fail to appease the blade he would become a buxom woman of whorish looks. "I have no quarrel with you.", the woman said as the mercs...
“If you do not mind, Davik,” A familiar voice from behind me said, “I would not mind a plate of that delicious smelling food.” I jumped in surprise and turned to see who had just said that. To say I was shocked would have been an understatement. “What in the seven hells is going on, Lillian? You’re a Voguel?! How can you change into a wolf without a blood moon? Why have you been helping me all this time?” She laughed at the rapid succession of my questions and it was only then I realized,...
The rush of wind in the face, watching the people move like ants, being withdrawn from the crowd, above it. Tim experienced all of these things as he leaped tall buildings in a single bound. Sinbad had first led him to a store that was still open at two o'clock in the morning. It was a specialty shop catering to a particular crowd. Suffice to say, Tim walked in wearing the tatters of a pink dress, and left wearing a suit of black leather, with a long black trench coat on over it. Guided by...
The three story-tellers stood at the prow, looking at the faces of the love-struck women, as they heard the story of Garreth and Therese. They couldn’t help but feel they were telling a love story, the way they all sighed and moaned, at all the romance of it. They had made it to the tip of the western coast and came to Neist Point Lighthouse, perched atop a jagged out-cropping of rock, the sheer bluffs surrounding it. The yacht plowed through the breaking waves, making the turn to head north...
My name is Jackson Shaw. I'm a historian, a philosopher, a night club owner, and oh yes, a vampire. I live in Ohio, and for the most part I have a neat, quiet existence. I wake up every morning at 6, hop out of bed, have a shower, get dressed, and then head over to my favorite coffee shop for my morning tea. This has been my morning ritual ever since I arrived here about a year ago. Now I know to most, this is not what you were expecting the life of vampire to be. I know that the imagination...
SupernaturalI have a medical history of high blood pressure. It's not surprising, even though I'm only twenty-eight years old. My parents were both hypertensive, as were my grandparents. The life-style that I live doesn't help much either. On my days off I drink beer and smoke marijuana, both to excess. I smoke cigarettes and drink coffee every day. I don't get much exercise either. My doctor has given me some pills to keep it down and for the most part they work pretty well; except for in one...
Iain saw his men following MacRae towards the shore and broke from cover. Screaming as loud as he could and waving his arms, he hoped his brother, or one of the others would hear or see him. Grayson joined him, both waving their arms and yelling the MacLean motto and then more voices joined in. Stuart MacLean was riding with his clansmen in the last half of the charge, when his arm was pulled by one of his men and told to turn and look at the two men on the battlefield. Iain was instantly...
The Justice rocked against the anchor chains, as its guns roared, its shots peppering the thick stone walls. Chunks of stone sprayed off the walls, leaving foot deep impressions behind. From the south, MacRae watched as the cannon took shot after shot, until it found the gate. The wood shattered and splintered open with the impact, leaving the castle open to attack. From across Duich, the thirty two pound cannon barraged the west wall, demolishing the new cannon battlement and any means of...
The day was growing old, and the sun was starting to set. Who could of known that something so simple and so regular, like the sun setting could have drastic and horrific consequences. As the great ball of fire abandoned the lit sky, the world around it collapsed leading for it to change dramatically. Darkness spread across, leaving no gap unfilled, nothing could escape its cold grasp. As the light left, it seemed like other things vacated the world. Hope and happiness seemed to turn...

Alicia hated her job. Sam's Tavern was ostensibly a biker bar, but its true clientele was a horrid mix of wannabes and parolees. The parking lot contained far more beat-up Honda Civics and rusty Ford Escorts than it did Harleys. As she wiped up yet another spilled beer on the bar, the perpetrator of the mess gave her a sharp slap on the ass, laughing uproariously at his own daring. She sighed but otherwise ignored his actions; she knew from experience that showing a reaction would just make...
Davik He used the whip again, demanding to know how I had gotten my abilities and what had been used. I tuned him out, thinking of other things, when a strange tickle occurred in the back of my head. Not on the skin, but deep inside, not unlike when I found the fire that triggered my abilities that first time. The tickle appeared just after a strike of the whip and after two more, it became much stronger. Instead of a tickle, I began to feel emotion, but it seemed off as if it were not my...
17 years ago... The sharp whoosh lasted only a split second before the dull thump of the arrow piercing the target sounded. The barb had struck precisely on the little heart drawn in red crayon on the drawing of the human-shaped figure mounted on the wall with the very cartoonish-looking set of dripping fangs drawn on the otherwise blank face area. Little Kaeli started to bounce up and down with excitement, but stopped as holding the bow made it a cumbersome gesture. The curved length was...
I awoke with a start, uncertain when and where I was. Something had disturbed my slumber. I looked around and it was as if I hadn't yet opened my eyes, there was nothing in sight. I do not mean that it was pitch black, I can see perfectly in no light, but there was simply nothing to behold. Stretching out with my senses I found that I was not on earth any more, it was some shadow realm. Upon taking inventory I noticed a lack of physical form; I had not brought my body with me, inconvenient....
What is a family? How do we become so attached to those that we grow with? Those that know us the best are the most capable of hurting us. Why do we always give them the power to do so? To claim someone as part of your family is to accept them into your life, into your heart. Those inside you are able to cause pain like no one else. This could be because they know you so well. Colin MacDonnell rode with haste through the countryside towards the attacking MacRae’s. It was his duty to watch them and ride back when they started to march for Donan. Having lived, travelled and hunted in the area all his life, he knew the best route to take and where he could safely watch them without being spotted. It was his deepest hopes as he prayed, that he could live through this night and return to his wife and family, alive and well. He’d seen the results of battle with Claymores...
As the men prepared the ship to leave port, Therese looked for a guard or soldier to give her last letter to. She spotted a soldier on patrol, coming up the pier and called out to him. The soldier recognized who she was and made haste to the gangway, before it was raised. He stood in front of her at attention and waited for her direction. ‘I want you to give this letter to the Earl, no one else. Make sure that he gets it, after, I have left.’ Her emphasis on after, being stressed to him. The...
The arrow went right through his Adam’s apple, all he managed was a gurgle before falling forward. The sound he made must have reached his comrades, as I heard them increase the speed of their approach. When he had hit the ground, the arrow was pushed even further through his neck, causing a spurt of blood to escape the wound. I could see that the arrow had pierced his spine, near the base of his skull. Within moments, he stopped breathing; a large puddle of blood was oozing out around him....
1875 Annabelle breathed deeply as her eyes opened. With a level of vigor she never thought she would ever feel again, she sat up in bed. Impulsively, she began to laugh. She felt ... strong. Revived. Alive. The fever that had ailed her for days, that had already claimed the rest of her family, was gone. She was herself again. No, that wasn't quite right. She felt better, stronger now, but not necessarily like herself. It was more like she felt like someone else. It didn't matter. By all...
The morning glow of sunshine washed the deck in orange hues, as men prepared the ship to leave port. Therese looked for a guard or soldier to give her last letter to and spotted a soldier on patrol, coming up the pier and called out to him. The soldier recognized who she was and made haste to the gangway, before it was raised. He stood in front of her at attention and waited for her direction. ‘I want you to give this letter to the Earl, no one else. Make sure that he gets it, after, I have...
While Garreth and Grayson awaited the start of the trial, James MacRae had already broken the cease-fire pact and sat with several leaders of smaller clans, at the head of the table of Andrew MacDougall. Andrew, sat on his left, in his deteriorating Dunollie Castle, while to his right was a captain of the Earl’s guard, dressed in full regalia for representation of his position. McCauley Fraser, Harlan Douglas and Jacob MacLean sat to either side of Andrew and the captain. He had put it to the...
Note: This is a work of pure fiction. Any persons, places or events that may seem familiar are purely by coincidence. Blood Wrong The sound, frogs croaking and of millions of crickets tuning up their legs for the same night time symphony that is played on most every night out here by the big pond. The occasional sound of a bird or two calling as they flit about the cattails before settling in for the night was familiar too. So peaceful out here. Out where the skies open up...
Paul walked into his apartment two hours later to find Rachel waiting for him, sitting up on the couch. "You're home late." Rachel commented indignantly. "I was unaware that I had to ask you permission to stay out late." Paul said with a raised eyebrow. "My apologizes Alpha." Rachel said recognizing her mistake. Sitting down in the love seat across from her, Paul said, "Marcus explained to me why you are here. I had to admit I was wondering." "Every new Were is expected to have...
1912 The door suddenly burst open, and Electra stood in the doorway. She looked very angry. "This madness has gone far enough!" Annabelle instantly sat bolt upright, clutching the bed sheet over her unclothed chest. The man in bed next to her, Paul, frantically shrunk back against the headboard. When Electra's rage was such that even Annabelle was frightened by it, it was only natural for someone else to go into outright panic. "First of all, we still have a right to privacy in this...
Drake dragged his sword as he wielded it. The blade was by no means light, but it seemed as he lost the strength to wield it, it gained the strength to wield itself. The battle had been long, and now it seemed no end was in sight. The on-lookers didn't shout encouragement. No witnesses spoke. He fought the monster he had once called Sage. He fought for his life. He had been betrayed by the man who had been a father to him. The monster lifted his sword and abruptly charged. Drake brought in...
Tom listened to the operation over the radio and had heard the orderly commands and replies of the SWAT team turn to gunfire and screams of pain followed by silence. He arrived at the premises less than five minutes later to find a scene straight out of hell. Bodies in blue uniforms lay everywhere, the entire scene painted in the rich carmine hues of fresh blood. He stared numbly for a moment, wondering how something like this could possibly have happened. He finally tore his eyes from the...
"I'm deeply sorry for your loss," said Father Likembe and nodded solemnly. He struck Ethan as a man of integrity and good will. His words sounded true enough, so Ethan obliged a sincere reply: "Thank you, father," he said and nodded pensively, suddenly lost in thought, his eyes fixed beyond the mass of people waiting for a meal. There was a peaceful murmur in the air, rarely broken by the sound of crying children. The people that had gathered weren't restless at all. He had been...
PART FIVE- Just Like Antoinette I dreamt the most splendid dreams that day: Kittie, Nathan and Dean working together in the restaurant, Dean being drilled by questions about the late 1800’s and all the things that he had learned. Dean told the highlights of his life but never delved into too much detail. Nathan and Dean joked back and forth, slightly irritating Kittie. “If Dana were here we would have an even match, but you guys are just picking on me!” she pouted. The guys just laughed and...
PART SIX: A Night to Remember Dean and Nathan got permission to use Ruby’s back room to change into their new suits and they joined us out by the car. We were quite a sight so see, the men in classic suits and Kittie and I in large billowing dresses with tight corsets. Kittie sat in the back with me and Nathan drove with Dean playing navigator, it would have been impossible for her to drive anyway. Kittie and I communicated telepathically and held hands as we headed out of town. “You know...
The rumbling had begun again. The ground shook so hard that without handholds we fell to the floor. The lights dimmed then went out. The cave became menacingly dark. I let Smyth go and covered my ears with my hands. The rumbling noise inside the cave echoed loudly. It seemed that the rumbling was becoming more frequent. Two lots of it in less than an hour had me worried. At last the rumbling and shaking stopped. I stood shakily then and helped Smyth to her feet, stumbling a little in the...
Chapter 1 April 1589 — Loch Leven The drenching rains fell heavy as they often do in spring, in the western highlands of Scotland. Through the trees in the early morning, grey haze, a flash of lightning illuminated the murderous eyes of a small army of clansmen peering upon the sleeping village. The evil in the eyes of the leader showed the mindset on carrying out the events about to happen. They made their way into Ballachulish on the south shores of Loch Leven, the thrumming of rain on...
Niya could already hear the tell-tale screams of cries of agony that marked Ashen's arrival as stood trapped in a small room at the back of the mansion. Looking for any possible escape she saw the window as she shot the bolt in behind her in time to see the door shake on its hinges. Rushing forward she burst through the glass rolling as she hit the ground. Not wanting to turn around, she broke into a run past the bodies of the dead strewn about the front yard of the lonely mansion, her only...
Lillian I left everyone in the room and made my way to the cellar of the, opening the door to find Violet, on the floor. The chains of the shackles were looped around a metal bracket on the floor, even Davik’s unique strength would not be able to pull it up. I looked down at her, memories of her sleeping after our love making filling my head and alerting me to her ruse. I walked up and planted a hard kick to her abdomen, causing her to scream in pain, as well as curse me for hitting...
Davik I could not tell how long I had been here, but my stomach was beginning to demand that I accept the food that the young girl had been bringing. True to her word, Brenson had stopped using blunt objects and began using a whip. I had to be careful as the pain of the strikes could have made me bite my tongue off, which would have been very painful, and I doubt I would have been able to grow it back. The whole time, he was asking how I was able to do the things I could, where I got my...
I am a vampire. I did not turn as any other has. I was not bitten by a vampire. I had no sponsor into the world of darkness. No one showed me the canal from which to draw power. My beginning is clouded in mystery, even from my own memories. I simply am. I was not from this world called Earth. I arrived from another world. I came from chaos. I come from a world of fire. My world was a place where the air is so thick with sulfurous gas and toxic smoke that nothing can survive simply by itself....
I was told when I finally woke up that I had been out for nearly five hours. Everyone wanted to be there with me when I woke up, but they knew the importance of the burning of the skulls. Lillian had stayed by me and told the others when I finally came to. I explained to them the meeting I had with Phaltina and that the curse had been released from the skulls when they broke apart. Kayla was a bit disappointed that she would not be using her mortar and pestle, but she was happier that I was...
The arrows left their bow strings, the whistling only lasting a second or two, before more screams echoed off the hills around them. Two more men stood without their manhood, while the third was pierced in his abdomen. The two men stood back and watched, as Glendon’s last archer, Callum McInnis took aim once more. All the men watched in suspense, Callum’s shot deciding a winner or not. The arrow streaked the distance in a blur and missed its mark, hitting the man on his left thigh. Gleason’s...
‘I can’t believe we made it,’ I gasped, then collapsed on the ground. From the top of the mountain, the island stretched out far below. The waters of the Pacific glistened deep blue as the sun beat mercilessly down. It was a little cooler at this height, being so exposed on the top of the now smouldering mountain, the sea breeze cooled the sweat on my body. Blondie joined me on the ground, obviously, she was as unfit as I, judging the way that her body shook from the exertion. ‘We should...
The constant roar of the cannons had the men pulling as hard as they could to battle speed. The guns of the Justice were battering down the walls of Knock, as shot after shot of solid iron kept crumbling the blocks apart, while other shot burst into flames when it hit. The birlinns kept racing towards it, the men readying arrows and lighting a fire in a steel pot. The larger, heavier galleys lagged behind their smaller counterparts, but made as much speed as they could. A lookout in the...
The trip back from Paris, left Therese with the first chance to understand what her freedom was. She sat in the carriage happily smiling, looking out at the countryside passing by and began to realize what Leon St. Gilbert’s hanging truly meant to her. Her life was now free of danger, no more did she have to worry about being killed, no more did she have to worry about losing her beloved Chateau and estate and no longer did she have to dread spending her life with Douglas Wallace, fourth Earl...
It was a clear night, the moon and stars shining brightly, the vampire hungry. Jake is a 300-year-old vampire, created by the now dead vampire, Manna. Jake was out looking for young beautiful women to feed upon. Instead he found a young man looking for death. Reading this mortals mind, he found out this man is a bisexual but mainly preferring other men. “Ah this should be fun” Jake thought to himself as he strides up to this man. “Sir, would you help a man down on his luck? Some food, clothes,...
