June/July 1980, Stockholm, Sweden

Karin and I hugged tightly for a couple of minutes, then I released her and picked up my bag.

“We’ll take the subway,” she said. “It should be running now.”

“How did you get here if it wasn’t running?”

“I took the bus.”

We walked to the subway station and got on the correct line to take us to the Anderssons’ apartment. We walked the short distance from the subway station to the building, then took the elevator up to the sixth floor and walked into the familiar apartment 6B.

“Do you want some coffee?” she asked.

“Yes, that would be nice.”

“Do you need a shower?”

“That’s probably a good idea,” I said. “I’ll do that while you make the coffee.”

I grabbed my bag and dropped it in Birgit’s room and then grabbed my bathroom kit, along with some clean clothes, and took a quick shower and came out to find coffee waiting for me at the table.

“What did you want to do while you’re here? Mom and Dad would like to spend time with you, of course.”

“I’d like to spend some time with them, too. The only thing I really need to do is visit Birgit. I have something to leave with her. Otherwise, I don’t have anything specific. You and I do need to talk.”

“Have you figured things out?” she asked softly.

“I’ve figured out a lot,” I said. “About me, about Birgit, about you.”

“Good. Did you want breakfast now? We can go see Birgit once we eat, if you want.”

“Sure! That’s a great idea.”

We had a typical breakfast of filmjölk, cornflakes, bread, butter, and cheese. I had a couple of cups of coffee as well. We finished and started cleaning up when Lars and Annika came into the kitchen.

“Good morning, Steve!” Lars said, taking my hand and shaking it.

“Good morning, Lars, Annika!”

“Hi, Steve! It’s good to see you!” Annika said, kissing me softly on the cheek.

“It’s good to see both of you as well. Karin and I are going to go see Birgit. I have something I need to leave with her, but then we’ll be back. Karin says you want to spend time together and I want to as well.”

“Fantastic. That will give us time to eat and shower. We’ll see you when you get back.”

I went to my room and got my hat and what I planned to leave with Birgit. Karin picked up the flowers she’d purchased at my request, as I knew the shop wouldn’t be open early in the morning. We left the apartment and walked the two kilometers to the churchyard and walked up to Birgit’s grave. I set the flowers in front of the grave marker and then pulled out an envelope and pushed it down next to the few tattered remnants of my letter to her.

“What’s that, Steve?” Karin asked. “Another letter to Birgit?”

“No,” I said. “This time it’s a letter to my unborn son. After Becky had the abortion, I wrote the same kind of letter to him that I had written to Birgit. I didn’t have a place to leave it, so I decided to leave it here. Somehow, maybe they can be together. I don’t know how the afterlife works, but I’m hopeful she can hold him and love him for me.”

Karin slipped her arm around me and said, “That’s beautiful. I hope you’re right.”

“I hope so too, Karin, I hope so too.”

“You don’t seem as emotional today,” she said.

“That’s because of one of the things I’ve figured out. When we talk, I’ll tell you everything, OK?”

“Of course it’s OK. I told you back in December that I’ll be here for you. Always and forever. Whenever you’re ready.”

We stood quietly for another moment, our arms around each other, then walked hand-in-hand back to the Andersson’s apartment.

When we arrived, Lars and Annika had finished breakfast and were ready for the day.

“What do you think of going to Gröna Lund, Steve?” Lars asked.

“I’ve been to Liseberg in Göteborg and to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, so, yes, I’d love to go to Gröna Lund.”

We spent the day at the amusement park and had a great time. Karin and I decided to go on «Kärlekstunneln» (Tunnel of Love) and spent the entire time laughing and joking about the miniatures. It reminded me a bit of It’s a Small World at the Disney parks. We didn’t kiss, though I did have my arms around her as she leaned back against me during the ride. She felt good in my arms, like she belonged there.

We ate dinner at a small Chinese restaurant in Stockholm and then went to a small ice cream shop for dessert before returning to the apartment. We drank tea and talked until bed time. Lars and Annika said goodnight and went to their room.

“Do you want to move your bag to my room?” Karin asked. “If we’re going to be together, it has to be there, not Birgit’s room.”

“Not tonight,” I said. “We need to talk things through before we do anything like that.”

“Good night, then,” she said softly and kissed me on the cheek.

I agreed with her. If it was to be, it had to be Karin I was with, not the memory of Birgit. The symbolism of which bed we used was vital to a healthy future, whatever might come of it. Changing beds would make it clear that our relationship had become about us, and I knew that was important to her. It was also important to me.

Before I got in bed, I sat at the desk in Birgit’s room and looked at the pictures of Birgit and me, Birgit and Melanie, Larry, Birgit, and me, Karin and Birgit, and Karin and me standing next to Birgit’s headstone. I smiled when I remembered the pictures being taken and got into bed with happy memories of Birgit. I slept well and dreamed of that first day I met Birgit and the wonderful memories from that year we knew each other.

I awoke Sunday morning refreshed and went out for a jog, taking a spare key from the rack by the door so I could let myself back in. I knew the distance to the churchyard to be about 2 kilometers, so I jogged there and back twice. I didn’t stop at the churchyard, because I’d been to see Birgit the day before and I no longer felt compelled to visit her. I would visit her every time I was in Stockholm, but those visits would be to remember her, not to be with her.

I came back to the apartment to find Karin awake and waiting for me.

“Shall I make you coffee and breakfast?” she asked.

“Yes, please! I’m going to shower.”

“Need any help?” she said with a twinkle in her eye.

“Not today,” I said gently.

I went to shower and dress and came back to my breakfast on the table. Lars and Annika came out shortly, and we ate together.

“Steve, I thought today we could go to «Millesgården» and then to «Historiska museet»,” Lars said. “What do you think?”

“Well, the history museum sounds good, but what’s the other one?”

“It’s an art museum and sculpture garden, on Lidingö. It’s quite beautiful,” Annika answered.

“That sounds wonderful as well!”

“Good. We’ll have dinner at a traditional Swedish restaurant tonight as well.”

We had another wonderful day together. I was growing closer to Lars and Annika, really enjoying my time with them. We walked around the grounds of «Millesgården» for a few hours, then ate a light lunch and headed for the museum. We spent several hours there, went to the Swedish restaurant for dinner, and then returned home. We drank tea and talked before bed.

“Annika and I work tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday,” Lars said. “We know you want to spend time with Karin, and we don’t want to interfere. We won’t expect you at dinner unless you tell us. We will say goodbye on Wednesday morning and Karin will get you to your train.”

“Thanks,” I said. “I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I hope to be able to come back some day and see you. I’m planning a trip in two years to see my class in Göteborg graduate, so I’ll see you if that trip works out.”

“Wonderful! There is always a place here for you,” Lars said.

“Thanks,” I said. “I really appreciate it.”

He said good night and got up to head to bed. Annika asked me to step into the kitchen with her for a moment.

“Steve,” she said quietly, “it’s OK if you sleep in Karin’s room. We know about what happened during your last visit and it’s OK. We approve of you two being together.”

“Thanks,” I said. “I appreciate that, and I’m glad you approve. Karin and I aren’t ready for that just yet. I’m not sure when we will be. Last time was, well, special. If we do that again, it will have a very different meaning.”

“Yes, I know. Karin told me everything,” she said with a smile.

I turned bright red, causing her to laugh.

“Please don’t be embarrassed,” Annika said. “Karin said you were a wonderful, caring lover and she wanted it exactly as it happened.”

“I know,” I said. “It’s just a bit odd talking to you about having sex with Karin.”

“Even after your year in Sweden?”

“I suppose it has more to do with the circumstances than anything else. You have to admit, they were pretty unique.”

“Yes, they most certainly were. Now, go be with Karin, in whatever way you wish, with our blessing.”

“Thanks,” I said.

She hugged me and kissed me on the cheek and went to bed.

“Mom told you it was OK to sleep in my bed?”

“Yes, she did. But you know that it’s not about needing your parents’ approval. I actually already knew I had that by the way they’ve treated me. It’s about us. You and I will talk tomorrow, if that’s OK?”

“Yes, it is. I look forward to it. Can I ask you something, though?”

“Sure, anything at all.”

“Why haven’t you kissed me since you’ve been here?”

“Because if I do, I don’t think I would be able to stop at a kiss. It would start a fire we wouldn’t be able to put out.”

“Good! You know that’s what I want,” she said with a smile.

“I know, but we need to talk about us before we take that step.”

“Are you sure you can’t kiss me?”

“Not tonight, OK? Let’s wait until we talk.”

“OK,” she said softly. “If that’s what you need.”

We hugged, and she kissed my cheek and we went to bed. My dreams were of that night in December when Birgit and I had made love through Karin. It was a beautiful memory. I was surprised in the morning that the sheets were still clean.

When I woke, I jogged to the churchyard and back twice, then returned to the apartment. I showered and went to the kitchen. As she had the previous days, Karin made breakfast for me. Lars and Annika had already eaten and were getting ready for work when I sat down to eat breakfast. I said goodbye to them and Karin and I had the apartment to ourselves.

“So, are you ready to talk?” Karin asked.

“Yes, I am. I was ready when I got here, but I felt we should wait until we were alone and had as much time as we needed. Interruptions would not be helpful.”

“Let’s clean up and then go into the living room. Unless, of course, you’d rather talk in bed,” she giggled.

“The living room! You’re being a real tease, you know that?”

“Of course I am! I know what I want. You. In my bed. Well, in me, actually. But I know we have to talk. First.”

“First? It’s a foregone conclusion, then?”

“For me it is. I guess that it’s not for you?” she said with concern in her voice.

“Let’s finish the dishes and we’ll talk,” I said.

We cleaned up the breakfast dishes and put everything away, then went to sit on the loveseat in the living room.

“I want you to start, please,” I said. “Tell me how you came to the conclusion that you and I are meant to be together.”

“Will that affect your decision?”

“Oh no,” I said. “Not at all. I know what I want. My question is only what the best course of action is.”

She smiled broadly, and I realized that she knew what I had decided. I wondered if it was a connection or if it I was just that obvious. The answer to that would come later, I was sure.

“Birgit and I talked about everything when she was alive. I remember the first time I heard about you from Birgit. It must have been right around the time you wrote the volleyball article. She told me that there was a really nice, sweet guy who she was friends with but was afraid to get involved with because she would only be in the US for a short time. That guy was you, obviously.

“She told me about Larry, of course, and she knew you were disappointed that she seemed interested in him. She wanted to date a bit, and she felt he was safe. With you, she was afraid you would fall madly in love with her, and she turned out to be right. She was concerned about how naïve and innocent you were, and was afraid she’d break your heart when she left if that happened. With Larry, she didn’t have that worry for some reason, but she never explained it.”

“Larry doesn’t like girls as far as I can tell.”

“Oh! That could be it. That would make sense. Anyway, she told me about your reaction when she kissed you on your birthday and how you tried to take her hand at school the next day. She really wanted to hold your hand, but she was still afraid to get involved with you.

“A few weeks later, she noticed a significant change in you. All of a sudden, you seemed more mature and more confident. She realized that you had made love with someone and it shocked her. She had not expected that and she realized at that point just how much she wanted you. She talked to Melanie and Melanie encouraged her to do something about it, telling her that if she didn’t do it before she left, she’d probably never have another chance, and that she’d always wonder. I think Melanie was surprised when Birgit made love with you. Melanie just expected Birgit to tell you that she liked you and maybe you guys would make out or go on a date before Birgit left and start writing to each other.”

A WellLived Life Book 5 StephanieChapter 25 Karin Part II

July 1981, Milford, Ohio We walked upstairs, and I turned on the sauna, then went to our room and shut the door. I opened the closet and saw the two robes, then turned to look at Karin. She smiled and began to unbutton her blouse. I watched as she shrugged it off and put it on the bed. She looked at me expectantly, and I pulled my polo over my head and dropped it on the bed next to her blouse. Karin removed her plain white bra, revealing her small, firm breasts. We simultaneously removed our...

June 1982, Stockholm, Sweden Three and a half hours after leaving Göteborg, the train pulled into the station in Stockholm and came to a stop. I grabbed my bags and stepped off the train onto the platform. Karin waved and walked over to me. “«Hej Steve!»” she said with a smile. “«Hej Karin!»” I responded, setting my bags down on the platform. We stood looking at each other for a moment and then she stepped close for a quick hug. She picked up the smaller of my bags and we headed for the...

Karin8217s Home Improvement Project

Karin Angelides gazed at herself in the mirror as she dressed. At 34, she still felt she had a pretty good body. She was tall, about 5’8″ and still thin, but her hips, breasts and buttocks were fuller and more womanly now. Three days a week at the gym over the last seven years was an investment she wasn’t about to give up. She’d started her exercise regimen when she and Rob first got married. She was 27 at the time and he was older, more established in his career as a...

Reinventing KarinChapter 2

After a while, Karin breaks the silence. "I wondered... Do you treat all your women like this?" she asks softly, with a smile. "Yeah, pretty much... Especially when I cum hard. Can't help it. Something takes over me. Depends on how much my mate excites me actually." "Hmm... I must really have excited you then," she says, caressing him on the cheek. "Fuck yeah. You'd make a dead monk hard." "Still, you were really rough tonight. All you've said..." "You've never had it...

For Karine and Country Ch 01

This is the first part of my first story, inspired by a friend of mine serving in the Canadian army. No sex in this one. ******************* Now a newly minted Captain, Matt Young stared out of the bar’s window, looking at the rain softly flow down the pane of glass as the night took hold. After what seemed like an eternity, he quietly turned back to the bar and stared down at his drink, stirring it slowly like he would a coffee. Coffee. There was something he hoped he wouldn’t have to...

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 25 A Partnership

October 5, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Tiger! I missed you!” “Hi, Babe!” We hugged and kissed more than we normally did when we met at the ER after her shift, then she hugged and kissed Kara, and the three of us started our walk home. “How was San Francisco?” Jessica asked. “Good. The User Group meeting went very well, I saw my old boss and professor, Scott Bannerman, and Bethany and I had a lot of time to talk.” “If all you did with her is talk, I’m not sure I want to go back to the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

Jessica giggled, “I set the alarm for thirty minutes earlier!” “Then let’s not waste any of it!” I said pulling Kara to me. Kara’s squeals as I plunged...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. I nodded, “It started when I was just a bit younger than Natalie. My mom was a total control...

July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. It was quiet and peaceful, and...

July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...
