July 1980, Göteborg/Hovås, Sweden

When I arrived home, the house was empty because everyone was at the station meeting Peter’s train. I went to my room and wrote in my journal. I was still very conflicted about what I’d done with Sofia and wasn’t sure that I’d made the right decision for me. I had certainly done the right thing for her, and maybe that was the proper way to judge my actions.

About an hour later, I heard the front door open and went upstairs to meet Peter Jonsson for the first time. He was about 180cm tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes, and looked to be in very good shape. We shook hands, and he greeted me in a California surfer accent. I started laughing out loud and answered him in my best Göteborska, which caused him to laugh as well.

Eva and Suzana put together a quick meal — a salad, ham, and potatoes and we all sat down to eat. There was a bit of good-natured ribbing from Peter when I sat in his chair next to Suzana. I got up, got a spare chair from the other room and put it in the spot that Anders’ mom had used between him and Pernilla. Suzana and I exchanged a few glances, and I got the idea she was considering what I had told her. I wasn’t sure she had the courage to do it, and it was something I would probably never know.

After dinner, we sat in the living room and drank beer or wine and listened to Peter’s stories about his time in California. He’d been in the San Fernando Valley and had spent a lot of time at the beach as well. I got the idea that he had been very popular with the girls and I wasn’t surprised by that in the least. He suggested to Anders that we go sailing on Monday, and Anders quickly agreed.

At bedtime, Suzana stopped by my room for a quick chat.

“You didn’t come home last night!” she teased.

“Your powers of observation amaze me!” I chuckled.

“You were with Sofia, weren’t you?”

“Yes. I stayed at her house last night.”

Suzana laughed. “I knew she’d get you. I would have bet money on it!”

“You lost your bets with me!”

“I’d say I won!” she giggled.

We touched lips to say goodnight, and I quickly fell asleep.

Monday morning I was up early but didn’t go running because we were leaving for the harbor around 6:45am. I grabbed a quick breakfast and dressed for the day. We drove down to the harbor and quickly prepared the boat. I was glad we had the chance to do this because it was unlikely I’d have any opportunity to do this back home. Patrick, Peter, and I took turns manning the helm and working the sails. We anchored for lunch near a small island in the archipelago and waded ashore to eat.

“I see I was right!” Suzana laughed.

“About what?”

“The claw marks on your back had to be from Sofia! They sure aren’t from me! And it must have been out of this world if she clawed you like that!” she whispered.

I had completely forgotten! I quickly put my shirt back on, hoping nobody else had noticed!

“You know just how awesome it can be, Suzana!” I whispered back. “Or perhaps it could be even better!”

She giggled in response, and I wondered what she was thinking.

After lunch we sailed out into the Kattegat, where we could sail at speed without worrying about small islands. Around 4:00pm we headed back to the harbor and after we secured the boat, we headed home for dinner. After dinner, we watched TV until bedtime. I got into bed and realized that I was down to a single day left in Hovås. I slept fitfully, remembering the year that had passed and wondering about home.

I woke up nearly as tired as when I had gone to bed. I forced myself out of bed and went out to do my morning run. I came back, showered and ate breakfast with Patrick and Pernilla. When I finished breakfast, I went downstairs and turned on the sauna. I changed into my bathing suit and went in and sat down, waiting for the rocks to warm up. A few minutes later they had, and I ladled extra water onto them, in the hopes the steam would improve my mood and how I felt.

About five minutes later, the door opened and Suzana came in.

“What is it with you and the extra steam? I know you weren’t drinking last night!”

“No, but I didn’t sleep well.”

“Why?”

“Thinking about the last year and what it will be like at home. It’s been such a good year and even though I want to see my friends and my sister, I dread seeing my mom.”

“Maybe she’s changed. You have, right?”

“Yes, I have. That’s part of the problem, in fact. It’ll make things harder because I’ve had a whole year of running my own life. Now I have to go back to a potential nightmare with my mom.”

“I think it’ll work out,” Suzana said. “Just do what you know is right. That’s served you pretty well so far.”

“Thanks. I’m going to miss you.”

“Didn’t we say this already?” she giggled.

“Yes, we did. But it’s still true.”

“I know.”

I took her hand in mine.

“And Suzana?”

“Yes?”

“Don’t be afraid. I’m not.”

“OK,” she said softly, and squeezed my hand.

We held hands for the next fifteen minutes until it was time to jump in the pool. We didn’t let go of each other’s hands as we walked out of the sauna and jumped into the pool. We climbed out of the pool and walked back into the house, still holding hands.

“I’m going to take a shower. If you don’t let go, you’ll have to shower with me!” I chuckled.

“I would, but Mom and Dad would kill me if they caught us.”

She didn’t let go of my hand, so I pulled her into the bathroom and shut and locked the door. I turned on the shower, then helped her out of her suit and took mine off. We stepped into the shower and stood under the spray in a tight embrace. I loved the feel of her body against mine. I kissed her softly and our tongues touched gently.

“Suzana, I’m going to really miss you.”

“I’m going to miss you too, Steve.”

We hugged for five minutes under the spray and then I turned off the water. I grabbed a towel and dried her off, then dried myself. I wrapped a towel around her and then one around me. I opened the door and didn’t see anyone in the family room, so we walked out hand-in-hand to Suzana’s room. I watched her dress and then we went to my room and she watched me dress.

“That was really cool,” she said.

“It was,” I replied.

We sat in my room listening to music until Patrick came to find us and let us know it was time for a family golf outing. We piled into the Volvo and drove to the course. We played eighteen holes, and I made par on four different holes, much to Suzana’s surprise. She teased me mercilessly about my game, but I knew it was all in fun and I also knew I played badly.

We had lunch at the Clubhouse and then headed home. I hung out with Patrick, Peter, and Suzana until dinner. Dinner was a wonderful meal with cake for dessert. They sang to me. Anders and Eva gave me a crystal Dala Horse as a going away gift. I thanked them for everything and told them that I had thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. We drank wine and beer and talked for the rest of the evening.

At bedtime, Suzana came to the door of my room and handed me a small box. I opened it and found a chain with a small ‘S’ charm hanging from it.

“It’s ‘S’ for Steve or Suzana, take your pick,” she smiled.

“Thanks,” I said and put it around my neck.

I finished packing my things and set everything just outside the door to my room. I was tired because I hadn’t slept well the night before and fell asleep rather quickly. I slept soundly and woke refreshed. I went out to jog for the last time, wondering if I would ever be back. I hoped I would, but I didn’t know for sure. I returned to the house, showered, dressed, and joined the family for breakfast.

Around 8:30am we got into the Volvo wagon and drove to Centralstationen. When I got out of the car, I was happy to see my friends waiting for me. It wasn’t just Torbjörn, Elizabeth, and Cecilia, but Helge, Christina, and Suzanne as well. As I greeted them, I saw another friend walk onto the platform — Sofia! Sadly, I only had about fifteen minutes before I had to board. Anders made sure my bags were on the train, which allowed me to stay with my friends.

As the departure time approached, I shook hands with Anders and Patrick and then hugged Eva and Pernilla. Suzana hugged me tight and kissed me, parting her lips so that we could share a soft French kiss. That drew a stern look from Anders, but I simply didn’t care. She’d have to explain it to him, not me.

Torbjörn and Helge each shook my hand, Cecilia gave me a brief hug and then Christina Eriksson kissed me softly and hugged me tight.

“I wish it had been possible,” I whispered in her ear.

“Me too,” she whispered back.

Suzanne hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek, then said, “Write to me, please.”

“I will.”

Elizabeth came up to me and hugged me. I kissed her softly on the lips and when she didn’t pull away, I parted my lips and we exchanged a soft French kiss.

That left Sofia, who had watched all of this with tears streaming down her face. I took her hand and pulled her to me and held her in a fierce embrace. She moved to kiss me and we kissed deeply and our tongues tangled. The kiss went on for a couple of minutes before we stopped to breathe.

“If you two are just friends, I’d hate to see what you would do if you were lovers!” Suzana teased.

She knew better, of course, but that was the right thing to say aloud. I wondered again what the conversation between Suzana and Anders would be like at home.

The conductor made the last boarding call, and I released Sofia and picked up my bag. I waved to everyone as I boarded the train, finding a seat by the window so I could see them for as long as possible. A few minutes later, the train pulled from the station and I was on my way to Helsingborg. I watched my friends disappear as the train rounded a bend and then settled back in my seat.

It was odd, but I didn’t have tears in my eyes as I left Göteborg.

July 1980, Helsingborg, Sweden

I was surprised to see who was on the platform when the train rolled to a stop in Helsingborg. Of course Pia was there, but so were Putte and Kathy. The biggest surprise was Mary Anderberg, who, like Peter, had arrived home the previous weekend. I shook hands with Putte, and both Mary and Kathy hugged me briefly. Pia gave me a fierce hug, and we exchanged a quick kiss, while Putte made sure my bags were offloaded. He helped me carry them to his car. The bags barely fit in the trunk and it was a tight fit in the car with Mary, Pia, and me in the back seat, with Pia clinging tightly to me.

“We’re going to our house first for lunch with our parents, then Putte and Kathy will take you and Pia to her place,” Mary said.

“Sounds good!” I said.

We chatted a bit about her year in the US and mine in Sweden. She complained that she had developed a real love for ice cream and had gained eight kilos because of it! I told her I loved ice cream, but I swam almost every day at home and had jogged or skated almost every day here. She told me she was glad to see that Pia and I were still together. I asked her about Peter and she said they weren’t getting back together.

We arrived at the Anderberg’s house and Rolf and Sinikka greeted me warmly as we walked in the door. Sinikka had lunch on the table, so we went right to the dining room to eat. The conversation was lively with Mary and I exchanging stories and the others hanging on every word.

At the end of the meal, Rolf handed me an envelope, and Sinikka handed me a box. I opened the box first, finding a very nice commemorative china plate from Helsingborg. The envelope had a small plastic card, the same size as a credit card with my name embossed on it and the logo for ‘57:n’ the disco that Rolf was buying.

“That’s a lifetime entry card, Steve. You never have to pay for the disco. The two little stars mean you don’t pay for food or drinks, either!” Rolf said.

“Thanks! Now I certainly have to come back!”

“Hey, how do I get one of those?” Putte chuckled.

“You’re going to be married to Kathy; I think you’ll get one!” Mary said, causing everyone to laugh.

“Did I miss something? Are you two engaged?”

“No, we’re not. But we’ll probably have a kid in the next few years, so at some point we’ll get married,” Putte answered.

“Congratulations!” I said.

“He makes lots of assumptions!” Kathy giggled. “But he’s right!”

That caused general laughter again.

“We need to toast to Steve before he leaves,” Rolf said.

He set out shot glasses and poured an amber liquor into them.

“This is Akvavit, flavored with caraway. Just sip a little after each toast. That’s the Swedish tradition.”

Each person at the table made a toast to me, or to me and Mary, and we all drank. Kathy abstained so she could drive Putte’s car to take us to Pia’s.

When we had finished, we said our goodbyes and Rolf encouraged me strongly to come visit and to keep in touch. We shook hands and then Sinikka and Mary each gave me a hug. They came to the driveway and waved goodbye as Kathy, Putte, Pia, and I piled into his car and drove off.

Kathy and Putte were going to join us for dinner at Pia’s, so after Kathy parked the car, the four of us went up to the apartment. Pia’s parents weren’t home from work yet, but Lisbet was there.

“He’s back. Another sleepless night for Pia. And for me, having to listen to them!” she teased.

“What are you talking about, Lisbet?” Putte asked.

“You don’t know? These two are insatiable. They screw all night. And I mean, all night!” she giggled.

“You’re just jealous!” I teased.

“Pia’s very selfish. She won’t share!” Lisbet pouted.

“Putte, if you take Lisbet’s side on this, you sleep on the couch for a week!” Kathy teased.

“Let’s play Uno!” Putte said, quickly changing the subject and avoiding the wrath of sister or girlfriend.

“Coward!” Lisbet giggled.

We played Uno for the rest of the afternoon and enjoyed a fun conversation. I was glad Lisbet had stopped teasing, though I figured she’d make a few more comments before I left.

Bengt and Malin arrived home a few minutes apart, just after 5:30pm. Malin started preparing dinner with help from Kathy and Lisbet. Bengt set the table and then opened a couple of bottles of wine. He also brought out a bottle of Akvavit. Like at the Anderbergs, when dinner was finished, Bengt poured Akvavit for all of us and there were several rounds of toasts. Putte and Kathy would take a taxi home and come back for his car the next day, so they both drank.

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 45 A Journey Ends

June/July, 1984, Stockholm, Sweden I woke when the conductor announced that we were arriving in Stockholm. I was happy the announcement came early enough for me to be fully awake and clear my mind before the train arrived on the platform. My dream had replayed the last seven years, but in a disjointed fashion. The strongest memories had come first - seeing Birgit for the first time, making love to her, her death, seeing Karin for the first time, my night of passion with Karin, and Karin’s...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

Fender Bender Gender

Fender, Bender Gender by Suzanne Knight "Could I see your license and registration please Ma-am?" This would be the icing on the cake of an evening comprised of multiple layers of disappointment. I was approaching a green traffic light, when blue lights started to flash, I braked quickly but the driver behind didn't react...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life Book 10 The WifeChapter 44 A Journey Ends A Journey Begins

May, 1985, Chicago, Illinois After dinner and karate, Bethany and I went up to my room. We’d agreed to take everything slowly, and savor each step. I hadn’t seen Bethany so excited about sex since the very first time we’d been together in the apartment back in Milford. At each step, she was fighting her urges for us to simply fuck like crazed bunnies. I spent considerable time licking and sucking her nipples, and then traced my tongue down her chest to her stomach, and eventually to her...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...

Joseki’s Journeys 3. Fighter Practice Tonight marked my third journey into the land of GCN Gor. I’ve come to find it to be an interesting mix of people. Some of the same people are there and I find it nice to be looked for. When I played on the Isle of Gor I saw always the same people and not many new faces. On GCN Gor I’ve seen quite a mix, both new and old. The new ones tend to be just as much fun as the old. Well last night I finally got to try my hand at combat. I ran into Taima again...

June, 1983, Göteborg, Sweden The SAS DC-9 from Heathrow rolled out on the runway at Landvetter, bringing me back to Sweden for the second year in a row, and the third time overall. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

The United Stars of the Galaxies now commonly referred to as the Union is a huge multi cultural society consisting of over five thousand members. The Union is spread across the M-0 galaxy, know to Terran Humans as the Milky Way galaxy, parts of the Andromeda galaxy and several satellite galaxies of the local group. This is the next part of my story, I had begun to tell in the previous part. While...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 20 It Happened One Night

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 32 Still Together

July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. Mom, Dad, Aunt Kara and I left the house and headed down the sidewalk towards the hospital where Mom and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 79 The Last Risk Of Freeze

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 44 A Journey Begins

June, 1984, Helsingborg, Sweden I spent a couple of days with the Anderbergs, most of which was spent with Rolf at his restaurant and disco. The chef, Axel, remembered me and let me spend the afternoons in the kitchen with him. I really enjoyed working with him, even though for the most part I was just cutting up ingredients, stirring pots, and doing other simple tasks. Both evenings were spent in the disco, dancing and drinking. I made sure to change dance partners regularly, because...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 25 A Partnership

October 5, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Tiger! I missed you!” “Hi, Babe!” We hugged and kissed more than we normally did when we met at the ER after her shift, then she hugged and kissed Kara, and the three of us started our walk home. “How was San Francisco?” Jessica asked. “Good. The User Group meeting went very well, I saw my old boss and professor, Scott Bannerman, and Bethany and I had a lot of time to talk.” “If all you did with her is talk, I’m not sure I want to go back to the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 56 End of the Summer Part IV

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois At O’Hare, I parked in the short-term lot as I usually did and walked into the terminal. I checked the arrival board and saw that the flight from Atlanta was listed as on-time. I walked to security, passed through the metal detectors, and then walked to the gate. I sat down to await Stephie and, hopefully, some answers. The jet pulled onto the ramp and parked, and the engines shut down. The Jetway was extended and shortly after, the first passengers began to...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

The Fender Bender a short story

I was creeping in Atlanta rush hour traffic, desperate to get home. It had been a long day. All I wanted was to get on my couch and watch ‘Blue Bloods’. It was sweltering hot, my car thermometer read ninety-eight degrees. I had the air condition on full blast. It didn’t really stop the sun from beating down on my skin. I was sick of the stop and go traffic on the connector. “Come on people.” I yelled, honking my horn. I had a major presentation at work and I didn’t think I did too well on...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 2 StephieChapter 23 Halloween Weekend Part II

October 31/November 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois When the song finished, Courtney simply walked away to join Jody, who was talking with Dale, one of the Navy guys. I decided it was time to talk to Tasha, so I grabbed a drink, and walked over to where she was standing. “Hi,” I said. “Hi,” she said, looking down. “Would you like to dance?” I asked. “I guess.” “You know what? Let’s take a walk instead,” I said. We left the attic room and went downstairs, then out the front door. I took...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 73 Hypothetical Questions

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 50 New Friends

June 5, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “How was your day exploring?” I asked Abbie when everyone sat down to dinner. “Chicago is not New York, that’s for sure.” “Did you find anyone to hang out with?” “I talked to a couple of people and I’m going to a dance club tonight to check it out.” “Take a cab home, please,” I said. “I’ll cover the cost.” “Why?” “The L runs through some very rough neighborhoods between the Loop and Hyde Park and it’s a longish walk from the L here. Buses don’t run late...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 74 A Whimper Not A Bang

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 20 Opening Midgame Endgame

September 1980, Milford, Ohio On Monday, Mrs. Brewer, the chemistry teacher, assigned lab partners. I sighed when I heard the names called. My partner for chemistry for the semester was going to be Kara Blanchard. She was gorgeous and had a great body. She was also a Bible thumper. I hadn’t really had any interaction with her, but knew her by reputation. I discovered that she also knew about me. Kara raised her hand. “Yes, Miss Blanchard?” Mrs. Brewer asked. “Mrs. Brewer, may I please...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 10 Journey

August 2, 1991, New York City, New York “Steve!” I heard as I came out into the arrival hall at LaGuardia Airport at 5:00pm. I saw a well-tanned blonde girl waving and to my shock, realized it was Lyudmila. She looked every bit of what I thought a ‘California Surfer Chick’ would look like. Sun-bleached blonde hair, pulled back in a loose ponytail, with stray strands hanging down over her ears; no makeup; a colorful, loose-fitting ‘crop-top’; what appeared to be a bikini rather than a bra,...
