A young woman groaned as she stirred awake by the sound of a brass gong ringing out in the distance. The young woman was Lynn Anne Hwang, a prodigy in the use the noble short sword and crescent pendulum through the martial arts known as Lahn.
She awoke to find herself on the small boat she had chartered from the docks of the small port-city of Xu Chi. She did not care for how the oarsman was leering at her, but she understood that many found her quite attractive and that it was part of the trade of being a female adventurer. The gong rang again and almost as if from a magical fog, appeared an island with a tall dark tower looming over it and the coast. Lynn Anne stared at the tower with awe, amazed that such a structure could be built in the middle of an ocean on such a small island.
Lynn pulled out the letter that had invited her to the island in the first place and read over it once more as her boat drew closer to the small docks beneath the tower.

You are invited to participate in Master Enzo’s Tower of Power to test your might and prowess against powerful warriors from all over. Untold riches and treasures await you at the top of the tower.
If you wish to accept this invitation, please bring this letter to the docks of Xu Chi and present it to any of the oarsmen.’
The letter was succinct and lacking any other details. Lynn knew of the infamous Tower of Power, and how many adventurers have ventured to it only to fail and return empty-handed, while some never returned at all. Lynn understood that as a licensed adventurer of the Empire, that it was her duty to investigate the mysterious island and to arrest the enigmatic Master Enzo. Lynn knew that it was a bad idea overall to accept the invitation and to travel to the island by herself. But Lynn was cocky in her skills as a fighter and her near empty coin purse and bank accounts pushed her to accept the challenge.
Eventually the small gondola reached the docks of the island, where a small reception party of three men in monk-like robes were waiting. Lynn threw the oarsman a few of the coins that she had left as she stepped off the boat and onto the dock. The three monk-like men gave a small bow and Lynn returned it.
“Welcome Lynn Anne, we are honored to have you here at the Master Enzo’s Tower.” the man in the middle of the group says, “I am the tower’s castellan, Liu Biao.”
“It’s an honor to be here and to have been invited to participate in your famed tower’s competition.” Lynn replied, “Where is Master Enzo?” she inquired, curious to see the infamous master of both magic and martial arts.
“Master Enzo will be waiting closer to the top of the tower. I am sure given your reputation that you will meet him soon enough.” the castellan answered, giving a wry smile.
“Ah, makes sense.” Lynn said.
“Now, Ms. Lynn, if you will, please follow us to the base of the tower where you can rest and prepare for the climb...” Liu Biao said, motioning for the young woman to follow him and his two seemingly silent companions. Lynn was a little uneasy that the two men trailed behind her as she followed the castellan, she could feel their eyes leering at her as she walked.
The walk from the docks to the base of the tower was not long. Lynn could feel a sense of foreboding as she stared up to the top of the tower from the base of it.
“Would you believe that it took Master Enzo only a week to construct this magnificent structure?” Liu Biao asked, breaking the swordswoman from her concentration staring up at the tower.
“That’s very impressive...” Lynn replied. The young adventurer girl began to feel a little over her head now.
“This way please.” Liu Biao said, motioning towards the large doors being opened by his two monk-like companions at the base of the tower. The doors swung open to reveal a vestibule lit by torches along the walls. Lynn Anne walked inside the vestibule and the doors to the outside world shut and the two monks moved to open another set of doors. The castellan motioned for the woman to follow him.
“Woah.” Lynn muttered as she looked around the room, exquisite furniture strewn throughout, to include a bed, and various potions and elixirs lining the walls.
“This room here will be the first step to your journey up the tower.” Liu Biao explained, “Through those doors, you’ll find the first set of stairs to the next level, there you will find your first challenge, be it a puzzle or opponent.” the castellan continued, pointing at the set of doors on the opposite side of the room.
“I see...” Lynn replied, trying to process everything around her and all the information being shared with her. She couldn’t help but feel a little overwhelmed.
“Take as long as you need here to prepare yourself.” Liu Biao said as he began to make his way out of the room from the doors they had come in from. “The climb may be tough, but Master Enzo has complete confidence that you’ll be able to push through whatever challenges lay ahead.”
Before Lynn could reply or ask any questions, the doors closed behind the castellan. She was left in the fancy room by herself. As uneasy as she was feeling, Lynn could also feel herself beginning to get excited by the prospect of a challenge.
