Author’s Note: Sorry this took so long. Thanks to everyone who wrote in with such positive and insightful emails and comments! A few of you noted that the timeline was a bit confusing, and I agree that I was overly subtle, so I’ll be putting in time markers as chapter headings. All dates are based from the first day in Part One (i.e. the main characters’ first interaction would be ‘Day one’ and the first chapter in this installment would be ‘Eight months.’) I’ll try to have the next part out soon.

******* ******* ******* *******

*** Eight Months ***

‘Hey, I’ll catch up to you guys later, ok?’ Kevin said, waving the girls on, giving Sarah a thumbs-up. He waited until they were out of sight before walking over to the shadows at the side of one of the buildings.

He shook his head slightly as he cut through the early evening crowds of students heading back from labs and late classes, catching the increasingly obvious stares, the not so discreet pointing at him and the girls. Someone on campus had discovered Talera’s open secret and rumors were beginning to reach a fever pitch. She had pointed out that humans had such short attention spans, when she showed no signs of being anything supernatural, most would lose interest in her quickly. While he understood her stance on the whole issue, he was having a hard time believing it wasn’t getting to her at all. When someone had decided to baptize the front door of the girls’ suite with blood (pig’s blood, she assured them) she had seemed only mildly concerned, and even then only for the well-being of her roommates. As far as he knew, she’d done nothing in retaliation, but then again, no one had dared pull a similar stunt since. Some part of him was enjoying the notoriety, but it was distracting and more than a little disconcerting. He had been walking with her across the lower quad one afternoon when a small band of ornately dressed Goths had approached them, bowed before her and asked to be made into Chosen. She had explained in a surprisingly polite tone that she wasn’t accepting applications at the time, but would keep them in mind, carefully removing the hand of one particularly brave girl from her forearm. The incident had amused her highly, but Kevin found it disquieting that the general public was so willing to believe what they read about her on the internet. He shook his head, smiling grimly to himself.

‘Jobias,’ he said, stopping next to the Hunter who waited patiently for him in the swath of darkness.

‘Can we talk, kid?’ the older man said, cocking his salt and pepper head to the side, indicating the little wooded park behind the dorms.

‘Yeah, sure,’ Kevin said, leading the way.

‘Listen,’ the Hunter said, kneeling in front of Kevin after he sat on a bench, his lean frame, though aged, still like an overwound music box, his movements graceful but overly sharp and a little too fast. ‘It’s come to our attention that you have a new friend. A unique friend at that. Do I need to tell you that every Hunter in Creation has his sights set on her?’

‘I don’t think that’s really a problem.’

‘It IS a problem, and it’s not going to get any better. She’s dangerous. You know that.’

‘She hasn’t done ANYthing. Hasn’t even shown an interest in upsetting any balances.’

‘You can’t control her.’

‘You don’t know that. She listens to me.’

‘You’ve only known her for eight months. How much do you really know about her? Do you know where she was last week? ‘

‘I didn’t ask,’ Kevin said with a shrug, a flutter of dread quivering in his stomach. He had seen her briefly earlier in the night after she’d vanished for nearly a week. Her eyes had dark circles under them, her expression wild, eyes not completely focused on the physical. She’d waved a little coldly at him, then disappeared into her room, closing the door after her.

‘She found them.’

‘Who?’

‘The men who offed her family. They were in California. Up to their old tricks. As far as we know, she broke a promise she made to Council that she’d leave them be, even if they were found, until she was Turned, when they could handle the situation better. She killed them.’

‘So?’ he said, crossing his arms and leaning back against the seat, feigning nonchalance. ‘They created her. It was on their heads.’

‘No, not like that, it wasn’t. She… I’ve never seen anything like it, kid. She…shredded them. Alive….That thing inside her is pure evil.’

‘Jobias, she IS the thing inside her. Talk to her for five minutes, you’ll see she’s not evil.’

‘I can’t, you know that. I shouldn’t even be talking to you.’

‘What does that mean? Why did you really come here tonight? I know it’s not out of the goodness of your heart. Your concern for my well-being.’

‘Son, you know I love you like my own,’ the Hunter sighed, sinking down onto the bench next to the larger young man. ‘You’re a Born Hunter. I wanted you to think about joining my crew one day.’

‘But…’

‘You’re no longer an Innocent.’

Kev raised his eyebrows. ‘Is that official?’

‘Yeah. There was a meeting of the big organizations yesterday about her and her acquaintances. I tried to turn the vote, but there was nothing I could do. You’re in too deep now.’

‘If you’re not with us, you’re against us, huh?’

‘Yeah. In this business, it’s the only way it can be.’

‘I understand.’

‘Kevin, this is serious. Do you get that? We see you as Theirs now. I can’t protect you if something goes down. It’s out of my hands.’

‘It was never in your hands, Job,’ the boy said with a smile. ‘Alright, since we’re down to, uh, brass tacks here, let me say this: Those girls are Innocents. If anything threatens them, nothing I or Ash can do will stop her from eliminating that threat. Nor would I even try. Leave them out of it. For your own sakes’.’

‘Is that a threat?’ the old Hunter said, surprise on his face.

Kevin bowed his head, eyes closed, and whispered her name into the night breeze before answering.

‘Just a warning. I don’t want this turning into a war, but if anything happens to those girls, even a thought of it, she’s going to know. And she’s not holding back. Clear?’

‘Clear,’ the man said, standing again. ‘You’re in love with her.’

Kevin stood, shaking his head. ‘That’s no secret.’

‘Kid, seriously. Please be careful. I don’t want to see you hurt. Or worse.’

‘That won’t happen,’ the boy said, his voice conveying a confidence that he himself was beginning to doubt.

Jobias looked down at his feet, shaking his head with a sigh. He started when he looked back up, hand going to the holster hidden under his coat.

Talera stood beside Kevin, green eyes peering steadily at him, expression unreadable. The Hunter moved his hand away slowly, but stayed on high alert. Never having seen her face to face, he took the opportunity to study her intently, knowing she did the same to him, though she made no sign of it.

‘Job,’ Kevin said, taking her hand and squeezing it, making it clear where his loyalties lay. ‘You really don’t need all four of them watching us. You know where we’ll be.’

Jobias cleared his throat, giving the boy a grudging smile, then made a motion with his hand. Four men slipped silently onto the path all around them, looking a bit sheepish.

‘Hey, Tolbert,’ Kevin said as one very large blonde man.

‘You’re real good, kid,’ he said in a voice like sandpaper. ‘Just wish you were on the right side.’

‘I’ll take my chances.’

Jobias kept his eyes on Talera as his men filed past him off campus. She was impossible to read, but her overall manner was calm, though she looked exhausted, distant.

‘Take care, son,’ the Hunter said eyeing Talera one last time, then nodding to the boy before turning and following his men out of the park.

‘Did you get anything from her?’ Jobias asked Tolbert once t
hey were out of earshot, though she could probably still hear them.

The big man shrugged. ‘Her thought process is so chaotic I don’t know how she functions, so reading her surface thoughts is out of the question. I don’t dare do more than scratch the surface, because right under all that chaos is…a minefield. Doors to different planes, her Elemental powers. Underneath it all just… a black hole. I can’t even look on it without it, uh, feeling things.’

He shuddered, pausing a moment before continuing.

‘But as far as emotions, she knew I was reading her, but did nothing to stop me. And she could have easily. I didn’t sense any aggression. No outstanding anger except for a few lingering echoes from the other night. No fear. No lapses in consciousness. She is unstable, but she knows it. Guards against it. Knows what her triggers are. Overall she was pretty cool. Watches that boy like a hawk. Nothing was going to get to him. Considering what she did last week, I think her emotions ran away with her. I think once she saw those three and they were right in front of her, she had what to anyone else would have been a normal reaction. Simple rage. But in her… rage is deadly. I don’t think she feels remorse for her actions, but she does regret losing control like she did.’

‘Could she be masking herself.’

‘She could be, but I don’t think so. What I did get seemed genuine.’

Jobias sighed, shaking his head.

‘Something is going to happen. I don’t know how or when, but someone is going to get tired of waiting, terrified that she’s going to snap, and take preventative measures. I hate to see that kid get caught in the crossfire…’

*

‘Did you hear all that?’ Kevin asked her, taking a step away from her, releasing her hand. His face was stony, eyes avoiding hers.

She sighed raggedly, shaking her head.

‘No. Why did you call me?’

‘He was telling me about your… adventures last week.’

‘What about them?’ she asked, crossing her arms over her chest, cocking her head to the side, soft lips set in an uncharacteristically hard line.

‘Said you, uh, ‘shredded’ those guys. He was genuinely spooked, and you can’t imagine the shit he’s seen over the years.’

‘I’m sorry,’ she sneered, lips curling, fangs flashing. ‘Did I need to get your approval first? It was my revenge to take.’

‘But-‘

‘Listen, Kevin,’ she said, cutting him off, shaking her head once. ‘I know fully well that part of what makes me so appealing to you and the girls is that everyone says I’m so dangerous. It’s cool. Kind of a rush. Who ever thought you’d meet a creature like me? But I seem so nice. Sure, I’m aloof sometimes, and I have some serious quirks, but I don’t seem deadly. Don’t seem all that bad. How could I be all that stuff they say I am?’

‘Okay,’ he conceded, shrugging, though his face remained unchanged. ‘I’ll give you that.’

‘I have tried my damnedest to be as honest as I can with all of you. Especially you more than any other. It’s not easy for me, and I know it’s not easy for any of you. There are things about me that are private, and I try to keep them that way for a reason. I don’t expect you to understand or even accept the darkness in me. I do, however, expect you to realize that it is there. And I don’t just mean as an academic conceit. I need you to understand it. I don’t apologize for what I am. I hate that it scares you, but it’s who and what I am and there’s nothing I can do about it. The only assurance I can give you is that I do love you, and I’d never hurt you.’

He sank down onto the bench, leaning forward, dropping his head into his hands heavily.

‘I grew up around Hunters, so it’s not like I’m not used to killers. People who have a psychotic bent. It’s just one thing to know it and another to KNOW it.’

‘We have a word for that. It translates to ‘fatal truth,” she said quietly, looking down at him, arms still crossed, but face softening slightly.

‘Why ‘fatal?”

‘Because one way or another something dies when you realize for the first time the real… terror of what we are. Whether it’s you, or one of us, or our relationship or your innocence, something is always lost.’

He lifted his head, peering up at her, lips pursed, eyes still narrowed.

‘I think what bothers me the most is that I found out from a Hunter. Not from you- Wait! Let me finish,’ he stopped her, holding up a hand when she opened her mouth to respond. ‘I understand why you haven’t told me. I even appreciate the thought, trying to preserve my innocence. But that’s a moot point now. Whether you like it or not, what you do affects me. Maybe you shouldn’t have let me get so close… I don’t know. Doesn’t matter. I’m glad you did…’

She sighed again, uncrossing her arms, expression sad, still hurt.

‘I’m tired. I’m going to Georgetown. If you want to talk, I’ll be there. Not that your mind will be anywhere else, but just think on… everything, okay? It’s not too late for me to let all of you be. You’re not in that deep yet.’

Before he could respond, she vanished in a blur of darkness and a rush of wind. Letting out a staccato growl, he rubbed his eyes with his palms. He sat there for a minute, trying vainly to collect his thoughts, then stood abruptly and stalked back off to the dorms

*** One year ***

Sarah snickered at Taylor’s expression as Nel put on the CD and the tiny girl’s highly enthusiastic dance music began to blast into the apartment. She downed her drink in one gulp, pouring another, which Sarah noted was nearly all vodka. She went back to chopping vegetables, expertly using the sharp knife, though she glanced skeptically at the cookbook on the table between them.

‘You’d think you’d be used to her shitty taste in music after a year,’ Sarah muttered to her friend under her breath.

Taylor flashed a smile, but said nothing.

‘How much more of this do you need?’ she asked, pulling another head of bok choy out of the fridge, downing another drink. Sarah marveled at her constitution. Four glasses like that so far, god only knew how much alcohol, and her cheeks were barely rosy, speech perfectly fine.

‘Keep drinking like that, Ginsu Girl and you’ll be missing a finger,’ the dark-skinned girl said pointedly. ‘That should be enough, throw it in the wok there and give it a good toss.’

‘Uh, you should know I can’t make toast,’ the other said, grinning sheepishly. ‘The only thing I can mix is drinks.’

‘You wield a knife like one of those Benihana guys, but you can’t cook?’

‘Never have been able to cook for shit. Besides, my training with knives wasn’t really geared towards chopping vegetables.’

‘Psycho.’

Taylor just shrugged, smiling, and pushed the shreds of cabbage into the wok, picking up a spatula and holding it as if she’d never seen one before.

‘Oh, give me that!’ Sarah exclaimed, snatching it out of her hand and laughing.

Taylor snickered and vaulted over the counter from a standing position, clearing it effortlessly to land gracefully on the other side, next to Ana, who caught her around the waist, spinning her around. The two ground together for a moment to the music, Taylor’s hips moving smoothly in syncopated circles before she spun away, tossing her long hair in its ponytail around her body, hips still moving in that entrancing rhythm.

Ana was looking down at the hand that had glanced her friend’s bare skin, rubbing her fingers together as if she’d been shocked. Sarah lowered her head, smiling down into their dinner at the memory of her own encounter with Taylor’s bare skin.

‘How do you do that?’ Ana asked, trying with comic effect to imitate the movement. Talera grinned and started to come forward, hand out towards Ana’s hips, then seemed to reconsider.

‘What’s the matter?’ Ana aksed, confused. ‘You ca n mack all over Kevin but you can’t touch any of us?’

‘I can’t- the part of me tha
t- I don’t have the control to turn it off- I- dammit-‘ she stuttered, for the first time looking embarrassed about her condition, muttering something in a melodic language.

‘That was eloquent,’ Ana teased. ‘Speak English.’

Taylor let out an explosive sigh.

‘I talk about this stuff and I can just hear how bizarre it sounds coming out of my mouth.’

‘Whatever, say it anyway. We all think you’re bizarre. So what? So is Sarah. I mean look at her shirt. What normal human would wear that color?’

Sarah gave her a dirty look.

‘You saw me the night we went to Volition-‘

‘No we saw a blur,’ Nel cut in.

‘Okay, yes. But that’s a good thing. At least I had the sense to move quickly. Anyway, I mean overall. I’m a succubus. Any touch from almost anyone and it… does things. Your hand is still tingling, right, imagine if I touched your… face.’

‘Oh, I can attest!’ Sarah piped up, grinning from ear to ear.

‘What?’ Ana asked, scandalized.

‘I already got a dance lesson. And the earth-shattering orgasm that comes with it.’

‘What?’ Now Nel and Ana exclaimed in unison. Taylor just clapped her hands over her face, shaking her head, though they heard muffled laughter.

‘Jesus, Sarah,’ she groaned. ‘Someone change the subject, please.’

‘No-no-no-no-no,’ Ana said, waving a finger at her. ‘I want to hear all about this little ability.’

‘Honey, now is not the time.’

‘Oh, really? When will be the time?’ the Asian persisted, tossing her long black hair over her shoulder.

‘Okay!’ Nel interrupted both of them, ignoring Ana, and turning to Taylor. ‘Speaking of Kevin. What’s up with you and him? For the past few months, you two have barely spoken. I know the honeymoon has to end sometime, but what happened?’

‘It’s complicated-‘ Taylor began, looking towards the door suddenly. ‘Speak of the devil.’

Kevin stood in the doorway, arms crossed, eyebrow cocked at Nel, though he had a smile on his face.

‘I mean, yeah, she’s already married but, uh, she-‘ Nel stuttered, cheeks coloring. She cleared her throat, and ducking her head moved past him to help Sarah at the stove, watching him through her hair.

He came towards Taylor, holding out his hand, which she took gently, eyes meeting his.

‘He can touch her!’ Ana whined, looking offended. ‘How come he can touch her without getting zapped?’

Kevin just gave her a look, and Taylor shook her head.

‘I’ll get you fixed one day,’ the demon said, though she kept her eyes locked on Kevin’s.

‘What’s that mean?’ the other responded, eyes wide.

‘Ana! Shut up already!’ Sarah hissed at her, giving her the evil eye.

Finally realizing she was interrupting a significant moment, the Asian girl blushed and muttering something incoherent, sat down on the couch, feigning interest in the muted television.

Kevin quirked an eyebrow at Talera, to which she nodded, and he pulled her towards the door, telling the girls they’d return soon.

*

Once outside, she held him tightly, resting her head against his chest for a moment, then in a roar of wind and silky darkness, she swept them off the ground. When he cracked his eyes open again, he found himself on the roof of one of the downtown skyscrapers, the city spread out far below them, traffic on the highways twinkling like strands of red and white Christmas lights.

He stepped over to the edge of the building and looked out at the city lights for a long moment before turning to face her again, leaning back against the low wall behind him. She returned his gaze serenely, her face unreadable, though he knew her well enough by now to know she was putting on a mask to hide her tension.

‘I’ve been thinking about what you said,’ he stated, waving her over to him.

‘And?’ she prompted, coming over to his side, footsteps crunching on the gravelled rooftop. She stopped just out of his reach, cocking her head slightly to the side.

‘We’re both right and we’re both wrong.’

‘Ok. I assume you’re going to explain.’

‘I am. Come here, please.’

He settled back, sitting on the cold stones behind him. Behind her, against the muted backdrop of city lights he could see the phantom shadows of her wings rustle as she stepped into his embrace, looking down into his eyes solemnly.

Blood Magic

It was really too easy, I reflected when it was all over. I'd decided what I wanted, and getting it was almost anti-climactic. I say almost, because climaxes definitely weren't in short supply. It all came down to blood magic. When Jowan came to me with a half-assed scheme to learn blood magic from Uldred, I didn't agree to it for power. The fact of the matter was, my harrowing was approaching, and I was terrified. My friend, Neria, had accidentally let slip more information than she...

I am so tired of all the bullshit about vampires. Yes… we do exist, so that’s not a myth, but all the rest… well, the crap people think they know about us is mostly nonsense. Firstly, we do not live thousands of years long. Around two hundred years is as good as it gets for us. Fortunately, we do not age and all mature vampires look like they are in their mid-twenties. This, of course, is a great advantage and sets us apart from boring humans. In addition, unlike humans, Vampires are also...

Blood Lust        The winter wind howled fiercely as I made my way back to the town tavern. Pulling my tattered top coat tightly around my neck. Deathly afraid to be late for my meeting with my mysterious benefactor.       I think about the night before last while sitting alone at the rear of the noisy dark tavern   Counting my dwindling money and wondering how I would live and survive in this strange new world in...

Blood of BrothersChapter 10 House Cleaning

From the writings of Aarcidmus, high archivist and lord researcher to High Emperor Sedimer'tiskoniar: Milord has been obsessed as of late. His only concern is the weakness that has been spreading. The sickness seemed to come from nowhere, and yet, minor cases of it have been appearing in my research dating back several imperials. The weaker lords have been becoming ill and dying. The weak have vanished. The powers all demon kin has been weakening over time. I have not been able to make a...

I was thinking what a pathetic life... I didn't see the car in front of me until I was nearly on top of it. Dim flashers through the snow caught my eye and I was able to slow enough to avoid hitting it. I wondered, as I slowly passed by if anyone was inside. I could not make out anything but the outline of the car. As I drove past I saw the lights flash faintly in the mirror. There was someone in the car. I slowed and started backing towards it. I'm not in the habit of stopping for...

Blood FangChapter 6

Paul showed up early the following day to his new job, eager for a new beginning. No longer would he be an alpha, and worse case scenario he could at least pretend to be normal. When the first dogs came in, he began their check ups, trying to hide the fact that he could hear them. He succeeded as far as the police were concerned, the dogs however knew better. Watching his every move they reacted to his every word and intention as if they clearly understood, and indeed they did. In an odd way...

Blood RoseChapter 7

1590 Very few things in the world had the power to frighten Electra. Her master's wrath happened to be one of them. And even that was usually only enough to make her take a step back and bow her head. Right now she shrunk down to the floor, positively cowering. Dracula's shadow aura was practically causing the whole keep to tremble with his rage. "Dost thou dare presume to insult my intelligence, Electra?" "No milord," Electra responded weakly. "I spoke only truth to you." "Then...

BLOODLINES 3: BATS ALL IN LEATHER I was growing extremely disillusioned with the LAPD. Here I had been hiding in my (recently deceased) Uncle Gregory's decaying Hollywood mansion for almost three weeks and STILL they had not discovered the body of Rick Herzog. Blood of BrothersChapter 13 Dining with Demons

What is the nature of demons? Are they the demons case down by god, the spawn of Satan, as humans tend to believe? Do they come from a different world? What are they? Demons come from all over the worlds. They are dimension travelers, but most specifically, they are beings that feed off of life. They are parasites. There are few that know the true origin of demons, most of them being the first demons. Some of them are still alive. Stories claim that the demons came originally from a harsh...

I say human history because it has been a long time since the title human could be associated with me.  Time teaches all to he who has the luxury of eternity. And what the ages have taught me...

Blood Moon Chronicles Book 2 As the Waning Moon SetsChapter 13

I made my way from the inn to the market east of there, where Clive had said they had been ambushed. When I arrived, there was a bustle of activity, normal for a market of this size, as well as a grouping of soldiers on the far side. I suspected that was where the attack had transpired. I weaved my way through the crowd until I arrived at the other side, where three soldiers were investigating the area. “Good afternoon gentlemen, what exactly happened here? Do you have any idea who did...

Blood RoseChapter 3

Six years ago... It was almost midnight. Brad and Ritchie had already retreated to their tents; Anthony was alone. Aside from the chirping of crickets and the crackle of his campfire, it was quiet. The pale light of the moon danced eerily on the ripples of the lake. He sat calmly in front of the fire, gazing out around the darkness of the woods. She was out there. He was certain he'd seen her once already. Last night when they got back from their hike he was certain for a split second...

Blood of the Clans Ch 17

The three story-tellers stood at the prow, looking at the faces of the love-struck women, as they heard the story of Garreth and Therese. They couldn’t help but feel they were telling a love story, the way they all sighed and moaned, at all the romance of it. They had made it to the tip of the western coast and came to Neist Point Lighthouse, perched atop a jagged out-cropping of rock, the sheer bluffs surrounding it. The yacht plowed through the breaking waves, making the turn to head north...

Blood Lust Part Two

My name is Jackson Shaw. I'm a historian, a philosopher, a night club owner, and oh yes, a vampire. I live in Ohio, and for the most part I have a neat, quiet existence. I wake up every morning at 6, hop out of bed, have a shower, get dressed, and then head over to my favorite coffee shop for my morning tea. This has been my morning ritual ever since I arrived here about a year ago.  Now I know to most, this is not what you were expecting the life of vampire to be. I know that the imagination...

Blood Pressure Check

I have a medical history of high blood pressure. It's not surprising, even though I'm only twenty-eight years old. My parents were both hypertensive, as were my grandparents. The life-style that I live doesn't help much either. On my days off I drink beer and smoke marijuana, both to excess. I smoke cigarettes and drink coffee every day. I don't get much exercise either. My doctor has given me some pills to keep it down and for the most part they work pretty well; except for in one...

Blood of the Clans Ch 50

Iain saw his men following MacRae towards the shore and broke from cover. Screaming as loud as he could and waving his arms, he hoped his brother, or one of the others would hear or see him. Grayson joined him, both waving their arms and yelling the MacLean motto and then more voices joined in. Stuart MacLean was riding with his clansmen in the last half of the charge, when his arm was pulled by one of his men and told to turn and look at the two men on the battlefield. Iain was instantly...

Blood of the Clans Ch 47

The Justice rocked against the anchor chains, as its guns roared, its shots peppering the thick stone walls. Chunks of stone sprayed off the walls, leaving foot deep impressions behind. From the south, MacRae watched as the cannon took shot after shot, until it found the gate. The wood shattered and splintered open with the impact, leaving the castle open to attack. From across Duich, the thirty two pound cannon barraged the west wall, demolishing the new cannon battlement and any means of...

Blood Lust

The day was growing old, and the sun was starting to set. Who could of known that something so simple and so regular, like the sun setting could have drastic and horrific consequences. As the great ball of fire abandoned the lit sky, the world around it collapsed leading for it to change dramatically. Darkness spread across, leaving no gap unfilled, nothing could escape its cold grasp. As the light left, it seemed like other things vacated the world. Hope and happiness seemed to turn...

Blood LustChapter 13

Alicia hated her job. Sam's Tavern was ostensibly a biker bar, but its true clientele was a horrid mix of wannabes and parolees. The parking lot contained far more beat-up Honda Civics and rusty Ford Escorts than it did Harleys. As she wiped up yet another spilled beer on the bar, the perpetrator of the mess gave her a sharp slap on the ass, laughing uproariously at his own daring. She sighed but otherwise ignored his actions; she knew from experience that showing a reaction would just make...

Blood Moon Chronicles Book 3 A New Moon RisesChapter 32

Davik He used the whip again, demanding to know how I had gotten my abilities and what had been used. I tuned him out, thinking of other things, when a strange tickle occurred in the back of my head. Not on the skin, but deep inside, not unlike when I found the fire that triggered my abilities that first time. The tickle appeared just after a strike of the whip and after two more, it became much stronger. Instead of a tickle, I began to feel emotion, but it seemed off as if it were not my...

Blood RoseChapter 6

17 years ago... The sharp whoosh lasted only a split second before the dull thump of the arrow piercing the target sounded. The barb had struck precisely on the little heart drawn in red crayon on the drawing of the human-shaped figure mounted on the wall with the very cartoonish-looking set of dripping fangs drawn on the otherwise blank face area. Little Kaeli started to bounce up and down with excitement, but stopped as holding the bow made it a cumbersome gesture. The curved length was...

Blood of BrothersChapter 2 Rude Awakening

I awoke with a start, uncertain when and where I was. Something had disturbed my slumber. I looked around and it was as if I hadn't yet opened my eyes, there was nothing in sight. I do not mean that it was pitch black, I can see perfectly in no light, but there was simply nothing to behold. Stretching out with my senses I found that I was not on earth any more, it was some shadow realm. Upon taking inventory I noticed a lack of physical form; I had not brought my body with me, inconvenient....

Billy was cynical, though also very intrigued by his stepsister's risque proposal. He didn't completely trust her intentions, but he couldn't help following her down the dark road, no matter where it led. Once agreed upon, Nicole put her nefarious plan into motion. All she asked of Billy was that he do as she instructed, no questions asked."Are you willing to place yourself in my hands and do whatever I say?" He easily submitted to her will. She loved to be in control. The power turned her on...

Colin MacDonnell rode with haste through the countryside towards the attacking MacRae’s. It was his duty to watch them and ride back when they started to march for Donan. Having lived, travelled and hunted in the area all his life, he knew the best route to take and where he could safely watch them without being spotted. As the men prepared the ship to leave port, Therese looked for a guard or soldier to give her last letter to. She spotted a soldier on patrol, coming up the pier and called out to him. The soldier recognized who she was and made haste to the gangway, before it was raised. He stood in front of her at attention and waited for her direction. ‘I want you to give this letter to the Earl, no one else. Blood Moon Chronicles Book 1 Beneath the Blood MoonChapter 12

The arrow went right through his Adam’s apple, all he managed was a gurgle before falling forward. The sound he made must have reached his comrades, as I heard them increase the speed of their approach. When he had hit the ground, the arrow was pushed even further through his neck, causing a spurt of blood to escape the wound. I could see that the arrow had pierced his spine, near the base of his skull. Within moments, he stopped breathing; a large puddle of blood was oozing out around him....

Blood RoseChapter 2

1875 Annabelle breathed deeply as her eyes opened. With a level of vigor she never thought she would ever feel again, she sat up in bed. Impulsively, she began to laugh. She felt ... strong. Revived. Alive. The fever that had ailed her for days, that had already claimed the rest of her family, was gone. She was herself again. No, that wasn't quite right. She felt better, stronger now, but not necessarily like herself. It was more like she felt like someone else. It didn't matter. By all...

Blood of the Clans Ch 13

While Garreth and Grayson awaited the start of the trial, James MacRae had already broken the cease-fire pact and sat with several leaders of smaller clans, at the head of the table of Andrew MacDougall. Andrew, sat on his left, in his deteriorating Dunollie Castle, while to his right was a captain of the Earl’s guard, dressed in full regalia for representation of his position. McCauley Fraser, Harlan Douglas and Jacob MacLean sat to either side of Andrew and the captain. He had put it to the...

Blood Wrong

Note: This is a work of pure fiction. Any persons, places or events that may seem familiar are purely by coincidence. Blood Wrong The sound, frogs croaking and of millions of crickets tuning up their legs for the same night time symphony that is played on most every night out here by the big pond. The occasional sound of a bird or two calling as they flit about the cattails before settling in for the night was familiar too. So peaceful out here. Out where the skies open up...

"I was unaware that I had to ask you permission to stay out late." Paul said with a raised eyebrow. "My apologizes Alpha." Rachel said recognizing her mistake. Sitting down in the love seat across from her, Paul said, "Marcus explained to me why you are here. I had to admit I was wondering." "Every new Were is expected to have...

1912 The door suddenly burst open, and Electra stood in the doorway. She looked very angry. "This madness has gone far enough!" Annabelle instantly sat bolt upright, clutching the bed sheet over her unclothed chest. The man in bed next to her, Paul, frantically shrunk back against the headboard. When Electra's rage was such that even Annabelle was frightened by it, it was only natural for someone else to go into outright panic. "First of all, we still have a right to privacy in this...

Blood of BrothersChapter 15 Warpath

Drake dragged his sword as he wielded it. The blade was by no means light, but it seemed as he lost the strength to wield it, it gained the strength to wield itself. The battle had been long, and now it seemed no end was in sight. The on-lookers didn't shout encouragement. No witnesses spoke. He fought the monster he had once called Sage. He fought for his life. He had been betrayed by the man who had been a father to him. The monster lifted his sword and abruptly charged. Drake brought in...

Tom listened to the operation over the radio and had heard the orderly commands and replies of the SWAT team turn to gunfire and screams of pain followed by silence. He arrived at the premises less than five minutes later to find a scene straight out of hell. Bodies in blue uniforms lay everywhere, the entire scene painted in the rich carmine hues of fresh blood. He stared numbly for a moment, wondering how something like this could possibly have happened. He finally tore his eyes from the...

Blood BondsChapter 6

"I'm deeply sorry for your loss," said Father Likembe and nodded solemnly. He struck Ethan as a man of integrity and good will. His words sounded true enough, so Ethan obliged a sincere reply: "Thank you, father," he said and nodded pensively, suddenly lost in thought, his eyes fixed beyond the mass of people waiting for a meal. There was a peaceful murmur in the air, rarely broken by the sound of crying children. The people that had gathered weren't restless at all. He had been...

Blood Diaries Ch 05

PART FIVE- Just Like Antoinette I dreamt the most splendid dreams that day: Kittie, Nathan and Dean working together in the restaurant, Dean being drilled by questions about the late 1800’s and all the things that he had learned. Dean told the highlights of his life but never delved into too much detail. Nathan and Dean joked back and forth, slightly irritating Kittie. “If Dana were here we would have an even match, but you guys are just picking on me!” she pouted. The guys just laughed and...

The rumbling had begun again. The ground shook so hard that without handholds we fell to the floor. The lights dimmed then went out. The cave became menacingly dark. I let Smyth go and covered my ears with my hands. The rumbling noise inside the cave echoed loudly. It seemed that the rumbling was becoming more frequent. Two lots of it in less than an hour had me worried. At last the rumbling and shaking stopped. I stood shakily then and helped Smyth to her feet, stumbling a little in the...

Blood of the Clans

Chapter 1 April 1589 — Loch Leven The drenching rains fell heavy as they often do in spring, in the western highlands of Scotland. Through the trees in the early morning, grey haze, a flash of lightning illuminated the murderous eyes of a small army of clansmen peering upon the sleeping village. The evil in the eyes of the leader showed the mindset on carrying out the events about to happen. They made their way into Ballachulish on the south shores of Loch Leven, the thrumming of rain on...

Blood Moon Chronicles Book 3 A New Moon RisesChapter 31

Davik I could not tell how long I had been here, but my stomach was beginning to demand that I accept the food that the young girl had been bringing. True to her word, Brenson had stopped using blunt objects and began using a whip. I had to be careful as the pain of the strikes could have made me bite my tongue off, which would have been very painful, and I doubt I would have been able to grow it back. The whole time, he was asking how I was able to do the things I could, where I got my...
