A surprise and plans! (No sex)
I got home around 5.30 tired, miserable and full of foreboding. I don’t know why, I just felt that it was all going wrong and I still hadn’t talked with Jo about Sunday. It was supposed to be such a big day for all of us but it seemed to be fading away. I was very sad by the time I got in. Thankfully, Jo was really bubbly.
‘Mike phoned, he won’t be back till quite late so I made a casserole. We can have ours now and I’ll save some for him. Come on Lena, what’s the matter?’
‘Oh, I don’t know. I feel so miserable. I think it’s all going wrong again Jo. I don’t think I should have mentioned how I felt, you know, I think I’ve upset him.’
‘Lena, I don’t think he was upset just concerned about how he was going to please YOU. You want his baby and I think he wants that too. I bet that today he’s been trying to sort things out. You see, when he gets in everything will be all right. Eat your dinner and stop worrying.’
Jo is usually right so I sighed and picked at my meal. She was having none of it and made me eat it all. You see, sometimes she’s like my mum, sometimes my sister, and sometimes my lover: I’m so very lucky to have had her.
We sat down after dinner waiting for Mike to arrive but it got later and later. I started to get a bit tearful because I feared the worst but Jo kept cheering me up. She asked me about last Sunday and the movie but I told her I really didn’t feel like talking about it until all this was sorted. You see how I bring these problems on myself, it’s silly really, but I can’t help it.
It was nearly 8:30 before Mike finally arrived. My immediate reaction was to jump on him and hold him tight. Then I started crying. No good I know, but I couldn’t help it.
‘I thought you were angry with me,’ I sobbed, ‘I though you weren’t coming back. I’m sorry that I upset you, I shouldn’t have brought all this up. I’m sorry,’ and I hugged him tightly.
He pulled away, ‘You are a silly,’ he said smiling, ‘I told you, you haven’t upset me. Anyway, I love you. If you don’t stop crying I’m going to put you over my knee and spank you, hard.’
‘I’ll leave the room then shall I,’ said Jo laughing, ‘because I know what that will lead to.’
‘Oh no,’ he said laughing, ‘you can stay and spank her too if you like. Then we can have some real fun. But,’ he finished, ‘I’m afraid I wouldn’t be any good to anyone. I’ve had a long and demanding but very successful day. And I’m bloody hungry, anything to eat?’
‘Oh, I’m so sorry,’ I said, ‘Jo’s made something. Do you want it before you spank me or after?’ I asked demurely.
He laughed, ‘I don’t think I’ll spank you tonight,’ then seriously, ‘but if you don’t stop being silly about all this I certainly will tan your bottom and it won’t lead to anything other than you being unable to sit down for a few days!’
I could see he was beings serious now and I realised yet again how much he loved me and how silly I was to doubt him. Jo was just smiling at us both as this went on. Finally she said, ‘You stay there Lena, I’ll fetch the food. Do you want a drink Mike?’
‘A glass or two of dry white wine and some fizzy water would be lovely, thanks Jo.’
Off she went to get everything and I looked at Mike. I hadn’t noticed when he came in being tied up in my own feelings but now I saw how tired he looked. ‘What have you been doing, you looked really tired.’
‘Oh lots of things,’ he said smiling softly at me, ‘lots of things.’
‘Oh, come on, don’t tease, tell me where you’ve been all day.’
‘Wait till Jo comes back and I’ve eaten, I haven’t had anything since lunchtime and I’m really hungry. I’ll tell you everything then, OK. Come here and give me a big sexy kiss.’
So I did and everything was all right again but I was absolutely dying to know where he had been all day. It must be good news because although he was very tired, he was also very happy.
Jo brought in his supper and he quickly finished up a large portion of casserole, and couple of glasses of wine and a glass of water. ‘Phew, I feel better now, that was delicious, thank you Jo. Now, to business,’ he said looking at me in that lovely way of his.
‘After Jo gave her news this morning I phoned Roger, you know the cardiac guy, because his wife is also a doctor. Believe it or not she specialises in IVF treatment and I managed to get to see her before she left for work. She arranged for me to visit her clinic and have some tests. You see, Lena, there’s no point in getting your hopes up if I can’t produce the necessary wriggly swimmers, so I had to find out if I could before doing anything else. I called in a load of favours from various friends and managed to get tested today. It bloody hurt, that’s why I’m so tired and so late. They had to analyse everything before I left. The good news is that I can produce healthy sperm and they can get it out.’ He came over, sat beside me, and took my hands in his, ‘So, if you want we can go ahead. The decision is yours. I said I would do everything in my power to make it happen, and it can happen, so what’s it to be?’
He fixed me with his lovely, now totally blue, eyes full of love. ‘Oh, yes, I want to, but what about you. Do you want to do this?’
‘I’ve had all day to think about this, Lena, and, yes I do want to do this. But, Lena, have you thought it all through, you know, what this means for all of us?’
I shook my head and fixed him with my big blue eyed pout. Of course I hadn’t, unfortunately I rarely do think things through. That’s one of the reasons I go through such emotional turmoil all the time. Of course Mike had thought it through, that was obvious and now he began to explain what else he had been doing today.
‘I didn’t think so,’ he said laughing, ‘what about you Jo, have you thought about it?’
‘Well, not really,’ she hesitated, ‘I’m sure it will mean big changes in our lives. I realise that you two will have to go abroad for the treatment but what happens after that I haven’t really considered.’
‘OK,’ he said in his most businesslike way. He had obviously done some planning. ‘According to Mary, Roger’s wife, the very best clinic for our needs is in Bologna. Now that’s very lucky because Bernardo has his business in Bologna and he lives just outside on a massive estate with a small house in the grounds. I got Mary to make some initial enquiries and there won’t be any problem with us going there. We just need to sort out the timing, but more about that later. I know that Bernardo would be happy to see us at any time, he’s dying to meet you Lena, I’ve told him all about you.’
I laughed, ‘Not everything, I hope.’
‘No, not everything. Just how lovely you are.’ I hugged him and started to cry. All my love for him welled up and it was too much. But he really got me then.
‘However,’ he said seriously and gently pushing me away, ‘I do have some conditions!’
‘Conditions?’ I said nervously.
‘Yes, conditions.’ Then he got down on his knees in front of me and took both my hands in his. He looked me directly in the eyes and said, ‘I know that I’m old enough to be your father but I love you so much. Will you do me the greatest honour and be my wife?’
WHAT??? I was completely gob smacked. I looked at Jo and she was laughing silently. ‘That’s got you,’ she said. And it had. I hadn’t even considered this. I suppose that now I was his mistress. But to be his WIFE? Married? He must have thought I was upset because he looked very sad as I hesitated but I only hesitated because I was surprised. There was no doubt that I would marry him, I just hadn’t considered marriage at all. I slipped down off the chair onto my knee
s and kissed him firmly on the mouth.
‘Nothing would make me happier,’ I said, crying into his shoulder. He held me so tight I thought he would squeeze the breath from my body, ‘Oh how I love you,’ he said and he kissed me again. I was crying and laughing at the same time, kissing him back and cuddling him. He stood taking me with him and turned to Jo.
‘Joanna,’ he said, ‘I suppose you stand in ‘loco parentis’ for Lena so I should ask your permission. Is it OK.’
‘Don’t you dare so no,’ I said smiling at her.
‘I couldn’t be happier for you both,’ she said, ‘I don’t really have to agree do I, but anyway, I do.’
‘Phew, I’m glad that’s over,’ he said, ‘I’ve been worrying about that all day and thinking what I’d do if either of you said no.’
I looked at Jo, ‘This changes nothing about Sunday with Jo, does it Mike?’
‘Not if you want it so, no it doesn’t. I love you Lena and you know I’d do anything to make you happy.’ Then he turned to Jo, ‘And you, probably the most beautiful brunette in the world, I can’t wait to love.’
She blushed beautifully and I slapped him playfully on the arm, ‘Flatterer,’ I said, ‘you’re only after one thing!’
He laughed, ‘Unfortunately I don’t think I’d be any use for anything at the moment after the day I’ve had. But seriously Lena, Jo, we have to talk about the future. I’ve had a lot of time today waiting around to think and do. Can I ask you both some things and make some suggestions?’
I looked at Jo and she nodded ‘yes’ so I said, ‘What have you been planning all day, come on, tell us?’
‘I’ll start by talking about the clinic and the baby. We have to go to Bologna at the right time of the month for you Lena, a few days after your period ends. We go in together and they take the sperm from me and take your eggs, I don’t really know how many they do. We’ll probably find out all about that when we get there. It’s a bit more of an operation for me because they have to cut in to get the little blighters so I stay in for a while. Then they fertilise the eggs and start them off in vitro I think. After about a month you go back and they implant some fertilised eggs back in you. The you go back about a fortnight later for a check-up to see if everything is OK. I’m not really sure about all the procedures but, no doubt, we’ll find that out when we get there. Once the clinic is happy with your condition the doctor there will pass you over to Mary back here and she’ll look after you.
‘I’ve had some ideas about how we do all this. You can choose how soon we go Lena, there won’t be any problem with the clinic. When do you want to start?’
I looked at Jo, then at Mike, ‘My next period starts on Thursday week so I’ll finish in the middle of the week after next. How about the weekend after that?’
‘Great,’ he said, ‘what I thought is that we could go to Bologna and stay with Bernardo for a couple of days before we go into the clinic. Afterwards we’ll go and stay in a villa I have which overlooks Lake Maggiore. We can stay there for about a month then go back to Bologna. After the clinic we’ll se how thing go then either back to the villa or, possibly, we can go to Sorrento for a couple of weeks to soak up the sun before returning to Bernardo and the clinic again. What do you say?’
‘That sounds good to me, but, erm,’ and I looked at Jo.
‘Oh don’t worry about me,’ she said, ‘you go and enjoy yourselves. I’ll be fine.’
‘Well,’ said Mike, ‘I did say ‘conditions’, that’s another one.’ He looked at Jo, ‘I want you to come with us to Italy. Lena will need a companion, someone to be with and I do too. I think we both need you there Jo. We would be lost without you,’ and he looked at her in that loving way he can.
She looked at me, ‘Oh please Jo, please.’
‘Look,’ he said to Jo, ‘if Lena agrees I’d like us to get married in Italy. Bernardo has a magnificent chapel in the villa with everything that’s needed. It would be wonderful. I won’t have anyone there, my girls will disown me over this but I don’t really care, and I would love you to be there. Lena, is that OK. Do you want your family there?’
‘Oh no, not on your life,’ I said, ‘I’ll tell my mum but if she came she’d only want to bring her mob with her and I won’t have that. I would like Jo’s mum and dad to come though, they’re like second parents to me. Would that be OK?’
‘Of course, well Jo, what do you say?’
She looked in two minds, ‘I don’t know,’ she said, ‘I don’t want to intrude on you two and everything . . .’
‘You certainly won’t intrude,’ said Mike, ‘I very much want you to come with us. We’ll need someone to keep our feet on the ground. And someone to love,’ he added looking at her fondly then at me. ‘I don’t think it would be right to split you two up you know. You’re as much in love with each other as Lena and I are. I don’t think I could be really happy knowing you were left here on your own.’
I walked over to her, held both her hands, and looked deep into her eyes, ‘He’s right Jo, I love you, you know that, and there’s nothing I’d rather have other than you there for both of us. And I am going to need a maid of honour aren’t I?’ I added laughing.
She laughed back, ‘I don’t know how I can refuse you when you put it like that but I don’t know about work, you know, getting the time off.’
‘Look Jo,’ I said, ‘you’ve not been happy there since Steve, and he’s still working there poisoning everyone about you. You could leave and go on the ‘bank’. You’re experienced enough to have no trouble getting work. Oh Jo, please come!’
She threw her arms around me and said, ‘Off course I’ll come, sod the job, we’re more important that that.’ She looked at Mike, ‘Are you sure you want me to come?’
‘Almost as much as I want to marry Lena,’ he said smiling fondly at her. ‘It will be a great time for all of us, you see. But,’ he said, becoming serious again, ‘we have to think of what happens when we come back.’
It suddenly dawned on me, if we were married I would live with him. It’s funny that you don’t think of the obvious we you’re caught up in emotional situations like this. That would mean Jo would be on her own, I wasn’t happy with that. ‘What are we going to do?’ I asked them both at the same time. Jo looked puzzled but I could see that Mike had again thought it through.
‘Jo, I don’t like the thought of you on your own. How about you Lena?’
‘No, I don’t like it either.’
‘Don’t be silly, I’m a big girl now, and I can live on my own,’ she said laughing a bit uncomfortably I thought.
‘Off course you can,’ said Mike, ‘but do you want to?’
‘Well, I suppose I don’t really. Lena and I have been together for nearly five years now and I will certainly miss her,’ she said smiling at me.
‘Does she have to?’ I asked Mike.
‘Well, it all depends on what you both want. I’ve drawn up some plans for changes in the house to provide a self-contained flat and I would love for Jo to move in there. Jo,’ he said to her, ‘I would love to have you with us, I think we are three and we can be happy together. But I do think you need some independence, you know, a place of your own. What do you say? By the way, don’t worry about this flat, I have an estate agent friend who, if you want, will take care of letting it to provide a nice income.’
She looked at us both and the love shone in her eyes, ‘Yes, I would like to be with you but are you SURE?’
Mike and I looked at each other. I could tell he was sure and I knew I was so I said, ‘Oh yes, Jo, of course we are both sure. That’s all settled then.’ I ended.
‘Whoa, slow down there, Lena. There’s an awful lot to arrange yet and it’s going to be a busy couple of weeks. I think we leave things as they are at the moment and we’ll sort things out when I book the clinic.’
I wanted to carry on asking him about the future but he suddenly looked very tired. Jo looked at him and then at me and said ‘Lena I think he needs
to get some sleep, leave him alone now. We can talk tomorrow or at the weekend.’
‘Yes,’ he said, ‘I’m shattered. What with the day I’ve had, becoming engaged, ‘ he smiled, ‘and finding I’m going to be living with two very beautiful and attractive young women. I’m sorry Lena but I’m bushed, I’ll have to go.’ I looked at the clock, it was near midnight, we’d been talking for ages, he must be shattered.
‘Oh, don’t be silly, you can sleep here tonight. We’ll both tuck you up in bed. Do you want to shower first?’
‘No, I think I just want to sleep sweetheart, point me in the direction of the bedroom and I’ll struggle there.’
‘Oh, you know where it is silly, go on, I’ll be there in a minute.’
Off he went to bed. Jo turned to me, ‘He looks very tired, he must have worked like hell today to get all that done. And all that planning. Lena, are you really sure about all this. It’s a major change in all our lives, are you sure.’
‘Oh, Jo, I think I’m as sure as I’ll ever be. I want his baby and I love him so marrying him is right. I love you too, so you being there when it all happens is right as well. Afterwards, when we come back, it’s right that you should stay with us. I love you both and I couldn’t face having to choose.’
‘You don’t have to Lena, we’re lucky, we don’t have to choose yet. But remember we still have Sunday to come. . .’
‘Ooohhh, I hope so,’ I said laughing, ‘I hope we cum a lot.’
‘Lena, you are incorrigible. I can see that you’ve put all those blues behind you.’
‘Yes, I have. All the worries now are nice ones, you know, how the clinic will turn out, will it be successful, what to wear. I think I feel happier now than I’ve ever felt. Even happier knowing that you still love me and will be coming with us.’
‘I do and I will, but now to bed. Go on a cuddle him to sleep, if he’s not asleep already,’ she laughed.
Well, he was, so I snuggled up to him and he cuddled me in his sleep. I drifted off with this wonderful future close to my mind and slept like a baby all night.
When I woke Mike was gone but I could hear him pottering in the kitchen. He popped his head round the door, ‘Wake up sleepy head, breakfast is ready in 10 minutes if you want to shower. And wake Jo on the way.’
He had prepared a lovely breakfast from what we had stocked away and we all sat down chatting as we ate. Mike left afterwards saying he would meet me for lunch and Jo and I cleared up before I went to work. With Jo on middle shift it meant we would have this evening together and, as I now had thrown off my blues, I suggested that we watch the film from last Sunday. She laughed, ‘Mmm, I’ll look forward to that. Is Mike coming over?’
‘No,’ I said, ‘we’re meeting for lunch. We won’t see him together until Sunday so you’d better be ready,’ I added laughing, ‘because we’re going to have a wonderful time.’ And I left for work.
