The old man, it turned out, was a rough-looking rake of a man in his sixties, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts. He was accompanied by four young people, two men and two women, all dressed in what seemed to be fetish gear, all leather and chains and exposed flesh. He was sitting at a table chatting with some of the other members when Michael arrived. Darryll beckoned him over.
‘Ah, this must be our newest member,’ said the man, clapping Michael on the shoulder. ‘I’m Logan Turner. Pull up a seat. I was just telling these fine people about how I started this little club of ours.’
Darryl motioned for Michael to join the group and he sat down.
‘I was a young man when I found the ring,’ said Logan. ‘No family to speak of, few friends, nothing really tying me down. So when I figured out what I had, what I could do, I threw some stuff in my car and took off.
‘I never needed to pay for anything, so I could go wherever I wanted. Spent every night in a different town, and never alone. At first, I’d just pick out a nice looking girl and either stay with her or in a hotel, whatever was easier, but as I’m sure you’re all starting to realise, that gets boring. When there’s no challenge to it, you start to crave variety.

‘Sorry, is your n- are you Logan Turner?’
He grunted in the affirmative.
‘You don’t remember me, do you? You waltz in to town one day and out the next, and it means nothing to you.’
He shrugged and turned back to the bar, but the woman didn’t leave.
‘You have a daughter, Logan. It was one night for you, but we can’t all just pack up and move on.’
Logan was shocked. It shouldn’t really have been a surprise after all the women he’d slept with that one of them would get pregnant, but it had never occurred to him.
‘Wait, are you sure it was me?’ he asked.
‘So it is you. I thought that might get your attention,’ she said. ‘And yes, you were the only man I’d ever slept with. You have a daughter.’
The woman looked at him for a moment as he tried to process the information before turning and walking towards the door. Manipulating minds was second nature to Logan by now and almost without thinking, he stopped her, called her back.
‘I want to meet her,’ he said.

Logan sat across the table from his daughter. He’d come here out of curiosity, with no plan in mind, but it occurred to him that Arleen was quite an attractive young woman — firm breasts, slim waist and long, golden hair. Darryl looked at Michael.

He laughed, and two of his leather-clad followers — his children, Michael supposed — helped him to his feet.
Michael summoned a staff member with a whiskey, but a couple of minutes later he was on his feet, drink untouched, heading for the door. This new world of his was stranger than he’d imagined.
