I always knew I’d leave our small town of Maygold in Utah but I still surprised myself with the stunt I pulled, and everyone else apparently. I was leaving my family, my boyfriend and all my mother’s expectations behind. Refusing Mike’s proposal was the catalyst, now we’d finally split I wanted a complete change, a new Victoria Fox.
My older brother Scott had a gift for Mathematics. He flew through college with ease and was immediately picked up by a large Banking corporation. When the opportunity arose for him to take a post in London he grabbed it. Growing up we had been incredibly close, whenever the shit hit the fan it was always Scott I turned to. When he left for London eighteen months ago I cried terribly, only my friend Summer understood how I really felt. So when I needed to run somewhere and start over I called Scott and asked him what to do. To my utter amazement twenty minutes later I found myself agreeing to move to London. My grandmother and mother are Scottish, a fact both my mom and dad are very proud of, which is why we all hold dual nationality. Funny to think that technically I was British, yet here I am on my first visit to the place.
We would be landing soon so I quickly popped to the bathroom. I fixed my hair, deciding to leave it down then touched up my make-up. I took a look in the mirror, red hair, pale skin, blue eyes…all things I hated growing up, I wanted olive skin with dark hair and eyes like my friend Summer. I had learned to love my body though, I’m a petite 5’4” and have a few curves so it wasn’t all bad. I buttoned my jeans back up and straightened my shirt then went back to my seat and waited for the landing.
Although we had all gained British citizenship through my parent’s efforts we had never actually applied for British passports. I had left Maygold six days after my call with Scott so there was no time to get one, it was one of the things on the top of my to-do list. This meant a slower route through passport control and customs. Eventually though, tired and bedraggled, I emerged through the doors into the main Airport. I was greeted by the usual arrival lounge chaos of loved ones hugging and drivers holding up names. I scanned the crowd looking for Scott. Then I saw him waving like mad from the back near the exit. When I managed to make my way to him we hugged and he picked me up and spun me around like he did when we were kids.
“God it’s good to see you! Vic you look great!” His voice was full of excitement, his face was a picture.
“Smile….” I grabbed my phone and took a quick selfie. “There, my first minute in the UK captured forever”
Then Scott looked at me and frowned, “What happened? You lose a bag or six?”
“If you're referring to my traveling light then yes, this is it”
“OK, who are you and what have you done with my sister?”
“I’ve had enough Scott” I didn’t mean to bring the conversation down but the long journey was taking its toll.
“Was it that bad?”
“Scott she practically had me married off to Mike”
“Mom’s only doing what she thinks is best”
“I know, I know but she drives me fucking crazy” I rarely cursed, he sensed my anger growing and changed the subject.
“So, it’s about an hour or so to the flat, we’ll grab a taxi”
“Sorry Scott, I’m a little irritable, long journey and all”
Scott held me in his arms and hugged me. He felt leaner, stronger than I remembered. His smell had changed too, whatever he was wearing I liked it. I felt safe as he looked down at me with his big dark eyes and smiled. I snapped out of my self-pity and said.
“Right then, show me London”
