I wake up.
Slowly rising from the bed, I put my hands to my skull tenderly, feeling as though I’ve gone a few rounds with a jackhammer in a head butting contest.

“ Oh, good, your awake Mr Doe.” she chirps in a bubbly fashion, with the kind of infectious happiness that could make a terminally ill 90 year old want to get up and do a jig. “ I’ll just go and get Doctor Shatzenberg .” and before I can even open my mouth, she’s disappeared.
About 5 minutes later a pleasant if somewhat plain looking man enters the room, his face a good example for budding poker players, his expression telling me nothing.
“ Good morning Mr Doe, and may I say, congratulations on still being in the land of the living, we thought you had left us on quite a few occasions, over these past few days.” speaks Dr Shatzenberg, giving me a couple more questions to ask him before he’s answered any that I already had.
“ Wha…what happened?” I slur, again shocked at how feeble I seem, tired already.
“ Well, in layman’s terms Mr Doe, your body simply tried to stop working, all at once. We have found the cause to be a very rare blood disorder you have, so rare you’re the first case in this hospital, in fact.” he explains, then, sitting next to me continues.
“ Now, we were able to save you, and we believe that there is nothing stopping you from living a happy healthy life for many more years to come. But, there was a complication.”
Even though he had just said happy healthy life, at the sound of complication my blood freezes.
“ It…is a sensitive issue.” he continues, seeming momentarily lost for words. “ We had to give you very large doses of certain medications to combat the blood virus, and while it succeeded in neutralising the virus, it also caused some other changes in your blood.” he takes a breathe and finishes. “ Mr Doe, your penis is fully erect and we believe that it will never go down again for the rest of your natural life.”
“ You what?!” I exclaim, unable to process what’s just been said.
“ I understand your consternation, Mr Doe. And what I’m about to say isn’t an excuse, its simply the truth, it was this or death. I have a few pamphlets for you to read when your feeling a bit stronger, not many though, I’m afraid. I will leave you alone now to get accustomed to your new situation, and I’ll be back a little later to check up on you.” then he rises from the chair and exits, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
The first thing I want to do is lift the blankets and see my erection with my own two eyes but I’m far too weak to raise my arms let alone my blankets.
