Spells R Us: In Appreciation by Ellie Dauber "If there's no other business, then the Work Group meeting is adjourned." Ann Sellers closed her notebook and looked around the room. The rest of the members, representatives from a dozen different companies that her employer did business with, did the same. No one said a word. Especially about how they thought she'd done running the meeting. They'd been working all afternoon, trying to develop this proposal for a major government contract. Everybody looked a little frazzled from a day of very hard work. She tucked her white blouse into the skirt of her blue woman's business suit and patted at a strand of hair that had come loose from the bun she normally wore it in at the office. It was still mostly dark blonde, but at forty seven, she had already found more than a few grey hairs. Ann was the only woman in the group, and she knew that she'd been elected as chair solely as a compromise. But she'd worked hard to prove herself. A lot of the final language in the proposal was hers. She'd drawn the group together, settled a number of minor issues before they'd grown into major hurdles, and she, at least, thought that the job was better for it. But had one of these hot shots said thank you? No. They were all to busy trying to figure out how they were going to claim the credit. It was the story of her life: work hard, get the job done, and see somebody else walk off with the glory. It wasn't because she was a woman, though that was part of it. She just had a talent for not being appreciated. It was the same way in her marriage. Steve wasn't a bad husband. He loved her. He didn't go chasing after other women. He just didn't seem to pay attention to her. That was what hurt the most. She wasn't a partner in her husband's life, so much as she was a fixture in his life. It was late enough in the day that Ann decided to play hooky from the office. She could give her report to her boss in the morning. He and most of the rest of the office staff would be gone by the time she could drive in from the suburb where the meeting had taken place. She didn't live too far away, so she had a good hour before she had to head for home. Plenty of time to do a little shopping before she had to go home and fix dinner. She pulled into a parking space near a side entrance to a large nearby mall. There were a couple of nice dress shops near this entrance. "There's even a Victoria's Secret", she thought. "I can buy something, so at least Steve will notice me in bed." Her spirits buoyed a little by the idea of getting something "naughty", she headed into the mall. But the nearest of the dress shops was closed for inventory. She didn't quite remember where the Victoria's Secret was. A few minutes later, she realized that she was lost in a section of the mall she didn't recognize. Most of the stores were chain outfits, but one had a name she'd never heard of, "Spells R Us". It looked like a curio shop with all sorts of strange items in the window. "Some kind of New Age Pier One," she thought. "Well, it won't hurt to look." There was an old-fashioned bell over the door that rang as she walked through. The place was shelves floor to ceiling with a weirder array of stuff than she'd seen in the window. Somehow it looked bigger inside, too. There was a man sitting behind the counter reading a book. He looked like a skinny Santa in an old cloth robe. "Must be some sort of store costume," she thought. "No, Ann," said the man. He closed the book carefully and turned to look up at her. "Actually, I'm a wizard, and these are my work clothes." "How did you know my name. Oh, wait a minute, I must still be wearing my tag from the meeting." Since many of the people at her meeting hadn't known one another, she'd suggested that they use clip-on name tags and table signs where they sat. She was still wearing hers on her jacket. "Even if you did have a badge on, I called you by name before I turned to read it. I told you, I'm a wizard, Ann. Now what can I do to help you?" "I don't think anybody can help me, except me." She was astounded by her honesty. Why was she saying these things to a store clerk that she'd just met? "Nobody seems to appreciate me, to support me in what I'm trying to do." "Hmm, let me see what I have for that." The wizard's mind raced. He really felt sorry for this woman. All mortals craved appreciation; they needed it as much as food or air. Most got it from somebody: a spouse, a parent, a boss, a friend. It seemed that this one didn't, and she sorely needed it. He thought a while and finally came up with a solution. It was a little complicated, but he knew from even his quick scan of her mind that she was an intelligent woman. It should work. "Excuse me for a minute, please." He rose and went behind a curtain that separated the front of the store from a work area behind. He returned almost at one with two pill bottles. There was a single green pill in one and a handful of smaller white pills in the other. "This should do the trick, but it will only work once. Put the green pill and one of the white pills into the food of the person that you want to appreciate you. Then take another of the white pills. Take only one. Don't worry about the rest, they lose their potency in about twenty four hours." "Then what happens." "The white pill will transform you into someone more worthy of appreciation. The green pill creates a link between you and one other person, transforming him or her into a person more able to appreciate you in your new form. Wait a half hour after the other person takes the pills before you take your." "Just appreciate me. That's all?" "Isn't that why you came here today? Only those who need this store can find it. But, if love is already there, it will grow stronger as well. We love best what we appreciate." It was a good line. With that trick of knowing her name, this guy had Ann almost convince that he was a wizard. If nothing else, it would make a good story. "Okay, how much?" "I like you, Ann, but you're a little bit too cynical. Let's say one hundred dollars." It was pretty pricey, but she could afford it. She made good money, and there was a bonus promised if the proposal got finished in time. The meeting today had assured that it would. She took her wallet from her purse and counted out five twenties. Then the wallet and the two pill bottles went back into the purse. The old man looked at a clock on the wall behind him. It hadn't been there a minute before -- had it? "You had best be going, Anne. It's almost 5 PM, and your Steve's coming home early tonight." "How did you know?" "I told you, I'm a wizard. Come back tomorrow and let me see how the magic worked." "I will," she said. She shook her head as she left the store. She was actually beginning to believe him. She must have mentioned Steve's name while she talked. She drove home, a well furnished apartment in a condo just off the highway. She and Steve had always planned to buy a house with a yard when kids came. But none had. They were settling down now to being comfortably middle-aged, and the condo fit them well enough. She went in, changed into a pink sweater and slacks set, and began fixing dinner. Ann liked to cook, and she was pretty good at it. More than once, friends had asked her to help with the food for a party. Sometimes, they even invited her to come to the party. Though the occasional invitation was usually all the thanks that she seemed to get. Steve didn't notice her cooking much either, even when she made a favorite like tonight's beef stew. "Time I did something about that," she thought. The stew was almost done. She turned down the heat to let it simmer, stirred it one more time, and went to the table by the door where she normally left her purse and took out the two pill bottles. She put them in her apron pocket and went in to set the table for supper. As the wizard -- maybe he really was a wizard -- had said, Steve got home about fifteen minutes early. His boss had been called out of town to one of the branch plants, and the whole office had let itself go home early. While he went to wash up, she put the food on the plates. She reached into her pocket and took out the pill bottles. The green pill and one white pill went onto the stew on one plate. She began to stir the medicine into the stew only to see the two pills melt away as if they were hot butter. "That should make it easier," she said to herself. Steve came in just as she set the food onto the table; stew, salad, peas served on two patterned plates. She put them down on the table and sat down. She'd already filled a pitcher with chilled bottled water and put it on the table. She looked at Steve as he sat down. He was wearing an old sweat shirt from his college and a pair of jeans. He was the same age as her, but men wore their years better. Grey hair helped them, instead of hurting their looks as it did to women. When she'd ben in college, she'd thought he looked like Robert Redford. Both men were older now, but she still saw the resemblance. She sighed. "If only he still looked at me like I still look at him." The meal was eaten mostly in silence. A little shop talk about what they'd done all day, but not much more. He did surprise her at one point. "The stew tastes different tonight," he said without looking up from the plate. Not better or worse, just different. She could hardly admit what she'd done. "I decided to experiment with a little different mix of spices. Do you like it?" "Hmm, I guess. It's not too bad." That was it. No "I like it" or "I hate it." Just "Not too bad." "That stuff had better be strong magic," she thought grinding her teeth. "It's got a lot to overcome." Steve cleared the table, putting the dirty dishes in the dish washer. While she put the leftovers into the refrigerator. Then he went into the living room to check the mail and read his paper. Ann looked at the kitchen clock. Thirty minutes. It was now or never. She took one of the white pills and swallowed it with a glass of water. She felt a warmth in her stomach. It seemed to flow out through her whole body. She felt a tingling sensation in her fingers and looked down at them. The skin was drawing tight on her hands, erasing the bagginess that had come with age. They looked young and supple. Her skin darkened to the sort of tan that took days of work to achieve. The tingling moved up her arms past the sleeves of the sweater. She saw her arms darken to match the tan and actually could feel her skin firming up. It spread to the rest of her body. Her breasts, sagging a bit from age, seemed to firm up, actually seemed to grow larger under her sweater, and for the first time in years, it seemed, her nipples were erect, pushing out against the fabric of her bra. Now she felt the tingling move down past her waist, a waist that grew smaller even as her hips grew wider. Her slacks changed to match her new figure. They also grew a bit to tighter to show it off better. Ann began to wonder about her face. The tingling was moving up her neck. She traced it with er hand. She had no wattle at her throat any more, and the skin on her cheeks seemed firm to the touch. But you generally can't tell wrinkle by touch. At least, not at forty seven. She took a small hand mirror from a kitchen drawer. No wrinkles, no crow's feet at the eyes. She looked like she was in her early twenties. Frantic hands undid her hair from the bun. It hung down, a glorious golden braid that lacked any trace of grey. She looked like she had at twenty. No, she looked like she had wanted to look like when she was twenty. "He'll appreciate me, now," she thought. But would he? Her new confidence melted away in a rush of self-doubt. Steve had always thought of himself as the ultimate, rational man. What had happened to her wasn't rational. It was magic. "What if he rejects me? What if he throws me out?" There was only one solution for her. If one pill made him appreciate her, two or three would make him worship her. He would never throw her out. She took second pill and waited for the results. They weren't long in coming. She felt the warmth in her stomach, again. Then the tingling that spread through her body. Much faster this time, it seemed. Then a new effect hit her. She began to feel dizzy. It was suddenly hard to concentrate, as if things were being blotted from her mind. She went into the den to sit down. As she walked, Ann didn't notice that she was getting small, growing younger. Her woman's figure becoming less voluptuous as she reverted to a teen. Her clothes seemed to shrink with her, always fitting. Her breasts, grown to 38-D from the first pill, shrank from melons to apples to plums before disappearing back into her chest. By the time she reached the den, she was about twelve. Her lacy push up bra had reverted to a training bra and was about to transform into a little girl's undershirt. There were pictures of Disney characters on her panties. She sat down near the TV and turned it on. Sesame Street was just starting. To the four year old that she had become in mind as well as in body, this was a treat. She sat giggling and repeated her numbers with the Count and Big Bird. Steve had been just as radically affected. The feedback from the first pill had rejuvenated him as well. Twenty-three and feeling his virility, he was on his way into the kitchen when Annie had foolishly taken the second pill. His original plan was to take his wife, the most wonderful wife a guy could have, into the bedroom and to show her how much he loved her in their favorite way. Now, the second pill took effect. He sensed Ann was in the den and turned. A wave of dizziness swept over his body as his reality re-wrote itself again. Steve grew smaller and less muscular. The hair on most of his body faded, while the hair on his head grew long. It reached his neck and formed into a ponytail. Breasts slowly formed beneath his sweat shirt, pushing it out as they grew to a 36-C. His t-shirt changed as well, growing shorter as it snuggled around his new breasts to become a cotton bra. His waist narrowed as his hips widened, and his legs grew supple with a delightful feminine curve. If he had been aware of what was happening, Steve would have felt his penis shrinking, moving up between his now empt scrotal sacs even as they became the labia at the entrance to his new vagina. His jeans changed into a pair of woman's jeans, while his sneakers turned a bright pink. The hair on his face vanished except for the two much narrower eyebrows. His cheek bones raised as his nose shrank. His lips became fuller, and now there was lipstick on them, just as there was now blusher on his cheeks. Suddenly the fog in his -- no, in her mind cleared, and Stephanie walked through the door into the den. The condo had changed as well. They were now in a smaller apartment in a rental section of the same complex. The furnishings were comfortable, if not too expensive or new. The sort of thing that a young secretary and single mother could afford. That was what Stephanie was now, though she still worked for the same company. Annie looked up as she sensed her mother enter the room. "Mommy, mommy, I was counting with Big Bird and the Count. I know all my numbers." "Very good, Annie. You're a very smart girl." Stephanie knelt down and hugged the child. ***** "Well," said the wizard putting away his viewing crystal. "That could have gone better. But Ann did get what she wanted. After all, nobody appreciates and loves a little girl like her mother." The End

SRU Friends are Thicker than Wishes

Here's my SRU anniversary story that I mentioned last week. I had hoped to have it ready for the October 8 anniversary, but fell a little short. Either that or I got a little longwinded ... again. This story is a little different from the others as I've written in the SRU universe in that its also a prequel of sorts to one of my non-SRU stories posted last month. It didn't start out that way, but given some of the characters I needed for this, I think it worked out better. You...

SRU Convention

Just a quick note, this is my first attempt at a transgender story. So all critism will be openly accepted. SRU: Convention by Greg Iacovelli As I walked through the mall looking for a costume to wear to the animae convention I saw the same stuff in every store window, stuff for Halloween. It was October 12, 1998 and my friend agreed to go in costume if I got it for him and he said any costume so I planned to do him over good. I still remember the conversation...

SRU: Unreally Real By Ran Dandel "Damn!" exclaimed Terry Ralston, as the monitor screen pronounced the words, "Game Over". "Killed again! If I could just get past that level!" This was the tenth time Terry had tried to win his way into the final obstacle in his latest computer game. SRU High School Reunion

This is written for the third anniversary of the SRU universe. It's a little late, but somethings can't be helped. The first story specifically designated as SRU (although I spelled it all out the first couple of posts) was posted to the TSA-TALK mailing list on October 8, 1996. At first, I wasn't sure if I would have the time to write an anniversary story. There was the crossover series with the Altered Fates universe to consider, although that project now looks dead. And I didn't...

Author's Note: This story is a continuation of my previous SRU story entitled "The Love Hate Rule". If you haven't read that, it may help before you read this one, but it is not necessary. This story is pretty much free standing. I hope you enjoy it as much as it's predecessor. ----------------- SRU: The Thin Line of Love By Crunch Andrea Clark had just stepped out of the shower. It was another lost bout of trying fight off the sexual urges she felt. It...

SRU The Contract

Spells-R-Us & The Contract by Bad Irving Standard disclaimer, if under 18 do not read this tale. Actually this disclaimer is just a chance to give some credit, where credit is due. The story "The Reviewer from Hell" by Happyguy was the starting idea for the creation of this story. It is with Happyguy's permission that I take his concept and proceed with my own story. The characters in this story are not a carry over from Happyguy's tale, but, the Spells-R-Us (SRU) characters...

SRU Nicely Backfired

SRU: Nicely Backfired: by Donna-Allyson McCleod (my first attempt at short SRU story) It had all started a month earlier when Shirley Davis had moved into Don's neighborhood along with her older sister Valerie and their estranged mother Sherry. Don Wallace was a senior at St. Mary's Boy's High School at the time. Shirley Davis had immediately caught Don's eye on her first day at the school. Shirley was sixteen and had transferred into the adjoining St. Mary's School for Girls as a...

SRU An Error in Application

Warning: This story contains adult material. SRU: An Error in Application by Fringold Sixfingers Lyle Green had heard several rumors about the 'Spells R Us' shop in the mall. Sense he did not believe in magic, he took the stories as tells of fancy. There was one rumor he was not about to ignore. The best place to buy computer hardware was SRU. Lyle could use an upgrade to keep him competitive. Soon he was outside the shop. Not at all what he was expecting. The store looked more...

SRUAF A Wizards Altered Fate

Author's Notes by Bill Hart This was initially intended to be the second posting of the collaborative crossover set in the 'Spells R Us' and 'Altered Fates' universes written by myself and Raven. However, after finally making contact with Raven, we decided my story could be posted first, with his story becoming a prequel of sorts, instead of the lead in. Before I do anything else I would like...

SRU Well Dressed

SRU: Well Dressed By Bashful Jack Edward Wilson was a relatively happy man. He had a good job and a wonderful wife. They had not been blessed with children yet but that was just a matter of time, he was sure. Jack really enjoyed his job, it was something he liked doing and he was good at it. He worked for a good company that treated it's employees well. You'd think he had the perfect life and you'd be right, except for one little thing. Jack wished he was a...

SRU Hunting Season

Note: This is rather tame compared to the other SRU stories and I took a few liberties with this one. I hope that I don't piss anyone off with it. There is no sex on this one so if that is a deciding factor for you, pass this one by. Please let me know what you think of this story, whether you like or dislike it. I have other stories that I'm working on and hopefully will post in the future. This story may be posted to any sight that doesn't charge a fee. All others must get my...

SRU Pantyhose

SRU: PANTYHOSE BY PAUL G. JUTRAS "Why can't I wear clothes like that." Was the thought that often ran through Chris's mind. Chris was a pleasant twenty-two year old. Anyone who looked at him would think he was a normal boy checking out girls. What he was looking at was the clothes they had on. Clothes he wish he could have on. His mother's side of the family ran a night club and during the early evening he listened to the music and wondered what it would be like to feel silk...

SRU Made for Each Other

SRU: MADE FOR EACH OTHER by Roy Del Frink Leland Welker was strolling through the mall one day when he saw a strange sight. It was an old-fashioned wooden shop called "Spells R Us". He was bored, so he decided to enter on a whim. Leland couldn't believe all the junk in there, and didn't understand what he would do in a place like this. Just then he noticed a short old man behind the counter. He looked at least eighty years old, and he wore an old crimson bathrobe. He asked the...

SRU: Christmas Miracles Copyright (c) 1999 by Chilli TNG --------------------------------------- Notes: The Spells 'R' Us Universe was created by Bill Hart; any characters from that universe that I've borrowed are ultimately his and I thank him for opening this universe to everyone. SRU Half and Half

SRU: HALF AND HALF By Roy Del Frink A disgruntled lady walked up to the counter, holding a paper bag in her arm. "Listen here, buddy," she said to the old man behind the counter, "you sold me a potion that would turn my husband into the next thing I said. I said, 'Change my husband into a Chippendale dancer,' and look what happened!" She placed the bag on the counter, and opened it. The lady pulled out two chipmunks, dressed in tiny top hats, tuxes, and canes. One had a...

SRU Better Than Plastic

Although they were childless, they planned to have children soon; in fact, Mark had tried to impregnate Susan for two months without success. SRU Chads Story

SRU: Chad's Story By Bashful Chad walked into the mall and looked around. He needed some girls to come to the frat party tonight. So far he had struck out. Last year he had come up with the idea to bring back the party committee and party fund. He had been appointed party chairman as a result. This was to be the first big party of the new school year. Chad was a senior and he wanted to make this last year of college a memorable one. Chad stopped and stared at a little...

SRU Jerry Jerry Jerry

SRU: Jerry...Jerry...Jerry... by [email protected] edited by SteveZ The SRU Universe belongs to the great Bill Hart, but most of you already knew that. Although it pains me to say it, I was watching an episode of the Springer show the other day, and this story seemed natural. This story can be posted on any free site. SRU The Way of the Manga

SRU: The Way of the Manga By Melissa Virus Copyright 2000 Matt and Jason headed into the mall. Every Tuesday they went to Cedar Oaks Mall to pick up the latest issues of their favorite comics at Skanky's Comic and Video; today was especially exciting because a Class of Ninja High School video Jason had special-ordered was supposed to be coming in. Matt made fun of him. "You know that Ninja High shit's American, right? That's not real. The guy who makes it is named fuckin' Ben," he...

SRU Learning French

SRU: Learning French By Demonn Hi, my name is Todd or should I say was Todd. I am, was 5' 10" and maybe just a bit of a geek. I wasn't ugly mind you but I wasn't all that incredibly strong. But that didn't stop me having friends like everyone else. It was a Saturday and like always, I was going to have some fun at my friend's house. I was a simple 15 year old guy, who enjoyed some R&R, when, my high school, Rivers High, was out. I mean who didn't. When I arrived at...

SRU Lovers Knot First Draft

Some time ago, Raven and I collaborated on an SRU story called Lovers (K)Not, which is unfortunately incomplete at this time. Raven created the story idea, basic plot and the main characters, and then asked me to write a rough draft based on the information that he gave me. After I completed the rough draft, I sent it to him, where he polished it up and added quite a bit more detail as well as his own touches. Raven posted each chapter to Fictionmania after he'd finished his...

SRU Catwalk Comeback

SRU: Catwalk comeback By MTG 15th August 2002 Well, a month before heading back to South Bank University to complete my Computing degree, I was in the Bentalls centre in Kingston shopping for bits and pieces so I would be ready when term started in about a month's time. After my quite literally 'out of this world' year I had already been itching to get back to normality after April - post the events of July I couldn't wait for term to start - with Steve having already...

SRU The Pardon

A version of this story appeared on Big Closet and on Sapphire's TG Fiction List. It may be added to other free archives as long as it does not violate Bill Hart's strictures on the use of his characters or my own notice at the bottom of the story. SRU: The Pardon By Lainie Lee The shabbily dressed man hurrying through the holiday shopping crowd slipped into the first door he came to. Hal David figured it must be a side corridor into service areas of the mall where he could hide...

SRU Weekend in Reno

This, my first FictionMania story, is based on a real weekend in October 2003. Just about everything in the first section of the story is true. Beyond that, well, this is an SRU story after all. (Reno girlfriends: no attempt has been made to match the characters in this story to any of you! Your secrets are safe...) --- We had been planning this outing for months. Most of the girls in my Yahoo Group had never met each other in person, but now we were going to get together in Reno...

SRU Mana Burn

Doing serious stories is quite enjoyable. Despite the fact that I'm still in the process of working on a rather long opus, I felt that a break was in order. Recharging the batteries through a little bit of humor has always been a fun tactic for me, so without further ado, I give you my first, and probably only entry into the Spells R Us universe. This particular story was inspired by a description of the card rack in SRU-Trading Cards, and the wizard's fondness for games as described in...

SRU Paper Dragon

SRU: Paper Dragon By Kim West I wish to thank Bill Hart for creating the SRU Universe and allowing others to have a chance to play in it. The story I have come up with is loosely based on "Puff the Magic Dragon." I hope you will enjoy the following. There once was a little rascal by the name of Jack Paper who loved to destroy everything in his path. His bedroom looked like a cyclone had hit it, and this would be only moments after his mother had cleaned it for him. His toys usually...

SRU Field Trip

SRU: Field Trip Jack woke up as he always did. Messed up from a night of partying and binge drinking, with of course the occasional mixture of various drugs. Groggy and clumsily, he got up from bed and looked at his calendar. "A visit to the zoo? Oh joy!" Jack said with a sarcastic tone. He had never thought much of animals in general nor was he going to start to now. What with being a troublemaker in class, this would just be another opportunity to do more trouble, he...

SRU The Shop Keeper

Author's note: I've always liked the SRU stories. This is my contribution. I hope you like it. LS SRU - The Shop Keeper By Lord Stormbringer "Damn, look at all that lost business," Tony said as he looked out of his storefront in the mall. Shoppers were bumping into each other in their hurry past his clothing store. He turned around and surveyed the few women shoppers comparing clothes. He went into the office at the back with the two-way glass window. Tom was reading a girly...
