Mohammed Akbar had a problem. He had just lost his job, he was
$2,000 behind on his credit card payment, and tuition was due.
But Mohammed's father would have none of it. He didn't want to
hear his son complain about money problems. The last time
Mohammed had called to ask for money, his father delivered a
stern lecture before handing out just $100 of the $1500 he needed
to get his car fixed. As it was, the car was still unrepaired and
he was worried about paying the rent next month. Mohammed didn't
know what to do until he received an e-mail from a company called
"Dailishang Xiansheng Zhuanru Xiaojie" with an address of
[email protected]
The e-mail read: "Looking for a Change of Place? We can help!
Travel the world at OUR expense! You, Mohammed Akbar, have been
selected for an all-expense paid trip to Hong Kong courtesy of
Dailishang Xiansheng Zhuanru Xiaojie! We will take care of all
arrangements! E-mail us for more information! Don't wait! Contact
us now!"
Mohammed ignored the message and moved it to the trash can to
delete it. But the e-mail would not be deleted. Each time he
tried to delete it, the e-mail showed up back in his inbox. He
finally decided to ignore it and turned off the computer. The
next day, Mohammed went out to get his mail. When he returned, he
sat at the kitchen table sorting it out.
One piece of mail caught his eye because of the beautiful Asian
girl who was smiling on the cover of the long brochure. It had a
Hong Kong postmark and was from the same company that had sent
the e-mail. He promptly ripped it up and threw it in the garbage.
However, when he returned to the table, the brochure was still
there! He decided not to try this again, so he decided to look at
the brochure in more detail.
He saw that the cover photo was actually four photos. The left
photos were marked BEFORE and the right photos were marked AFTER.
The top photo left photo and bottom right photo was of a
beautiful Asian girl. The first photo had her with a sad face
standing in front of a Japanese dojo, while the second, she was
obviously happier standing in front of Big Ben. The bottom right
photo and top left photo was of an attractive English gentleman
standing in front of Big Ben and the second was of him in front
of the Japanese dojo. The caption read, "Here are two of our
happy customers!
Keiko and Roger didn't know what to do until they had their
change of place. Now they can't wait to get back home and begin
their lives! E-mail us at [email protected], for
more information or call our West Coast Los Angeles Chinatown
office at 213-555-1111 and ask to speak with Miss Mei-Ling or
Miss Carolyn!"
Oh well, thought Mohammed, "I guess it is worth a call" as he
picked up the receiver to call. On the other line, Miss Mei-Ling
Michiko Wu answered. "Dailishang Xiansheng Zhuanru Xiojie! How
may I help you, Mr. Akbar?"
Mohammed was startled and asked, "How did you know my name?"
Mei-Ling giggled, "It is on our caller ID."
Mohammed felt a little relieved at this and asked, "I received an
e-mail and brochure for your agency. Could you tell me a little
more about this offer for a change of place?"
Mei-Ling replied, "No problem, Mr. Akbar. We are always ready to
serve. Our program guarantees that you will be able to go abroad
at no cost to yourself and that when you return home, you will
have all your bills paid and a fresh new life."
Mohammed thought for a moment and laughed. "How can you guarantee
a new life and pay my bills without any cost to me?"
Mei-Ling replied, "Mr. Akbar, we have an unconditional guarantee.
If we do not keep our promise, we will pay you $5,000 cash.
Should I arrange a meeting, so that you can begin?"
Mohammed said, "Sure, why not? How do I meet you?"
Mei-Ling said cryptically, "Don't worry, Mr. Akbar, I will meet
you!" as she hung up the phone.
Twenty minutes later, a beautiful Chinese girl appeared at Mr.
Akbar's door. Mohammed was amazed at the tall radiant beauty who
wore a Cheongsaam and spoke with a heavy Chinese accent. "Hello,
Mr. Akbar. I am Mei-Ling." stated the girl in a matter of fact
fashion.
Mohammed was taken aback and didn't know what to say but Mei-Ling
waltzed into the apartment and began to speak. "Mr. Akbar, let me
get right down to the facts. You want a new life. I am here to
give it to you. The only condition we have is that you must
willingly accept the program. Please sign at the bottom of this
contract."
Mohammed was expecting a lengthy contract but the single sheet of
paper only had the following written on it:
"I, Mohammed Akbar, accept that I will go through a change of
place of the Dailishang Xiansheng Zhuanru Xiojie's choosing based
on one of the following six destinations: Tokyo, Hong Kong,
Shanghai, Taipei, Ho Chi Min City, or Seoul. I agree to spend at
least three months in that location and will be paid $10,000 cash
up front for this. While there, I will act as a travel agent for
the agency from the hours of 9 to 2 PM, Monday through Saturday
and will be paid $2000 US per month for this service. If I choose
to stay with the agency, I will be allowed to travel for up to
one month every six months to any location in East Asia at
company expense and my salary will increase to $3000 US per
month. In addition, the agency will pay me a commission of $2500
per sale. If I choose to leave the agency, the agency will
arrange for suitable employment or accommodations if I so choose.
I agree to wear the agency uniform at all times and will be given
a name that I will use which is suitable for the country to which
I am posted. The agency agrees to provide language lessons for
free. Failure to abide by terms of contract may result in
penalties."
"I didn't realize that it was a job offer," replied Mohammed.
"What did you think it was?" asked Mei-Ling. "Certainly, no
company can afford to pay people for nothing. Are you
interested?"
"Interested?" grinned Mohammed. "Where do I sign?"
"Right here," replied Mei-Ling, pointing at the X.
Mohammed signed the document and handed it to Mei-Ling. "Thanks!"
she said, "We need a girl in our Tokyo and you will be the
perfect candidate." she stated as she waved her hand in a
circular motion.
Mohammed noticed that he was getting smaller so that now Mei-
Ling, who had been his height was now at least four inches
taller. He also noticed that his clothing was changing into a
kimono and his hair was becoming longer.
"Oh my God!" he stated but now his voice was at a higher pitch,
"I'm a girl!"
"Yes," replied Mei-Ling, "and a very pretty one. Your name is
Kasumi Hatami and you are 19 years old. You speak perfect
Japanese and are our newest addition to our happy family. Miss
Hatami is right now being changed into you and we have arranged
for an exchange trip shortly."
Mohammed replied with tears streaming down her face, "But I don't
want to be a girl!"
"Tsk tsk, yes you do. Now stop crying. You have always wanted to
be a girl and now you are so happy to be one."
Mohammed immediately stopped crying and smiled, "Hai! I always
want be a girl. I glad to be girl!"
Mei-Ling continued, "Miss Hatami, I understand that Mr. Hagawasa
has an interest in you. I hope that you will be able to stay
longer than our agreed to three months but I will understand if
you choose to leave us to marry him."
The next day, Miss Hatami and Mr. Akbar indeed had their change
of place and were much the happier for it.
