9:00 a.m.
"Okay, Jack. If you want me to be there, I can. I'll always
be there for you, Jack."
The Warner House's alive with the sounds of people. In the
living room, you can hear the sounds of a television, a
quiz show. With the shears closed and the drapes open, you
could see a woman shadow sitting on the couch with her feet
up. The occasional glow of a cigarette, the clinking of ice

Other parts of the house exhibited life, too. Sounds of a

occasional noise coming from deep inside a bedroom or a
basement.
We walked up to the Warner front door and Roberta opened it
before Jack could get his key into the lock. Her cigarette
hung from her mouth and the Bloody Mary was in her left
hand. She turned to Jack and gave him a quick kiss on the
cheek. She kinda glared at me. Roberta had a tough time
dealing with stuff this early in the morning. I knew that
by noon, the vodka would smooth things out.
"Jack, why are you home and why the heck did you run that
darn siren in the neighborhood. Geez, you are such an
idiot."
Then Roberta pretended to notice me for the first time.
"Oh, and company! Jack, why is your uh, little friend here
with you?"
"Dear, I'll remember not to use the siren any more in our
neighborhood. I'm sorry. I brought Renee by because there
was something I needed to say, and I want her here." Jack
hung his head a looked a tad intimidated by his wife.
I couldn't blame him. She had always been the bitch as long
as I knew her. I had never had a great relationship with my
former English teacher. She'd been treating me with
disrespect and disgust throughout school. The funny thing
was that my friends accepted me more readily than the
teachers who were supposed to be educated. Also, I didn't
know whether it was because she suspected my sucking and
fucking her husband or the fact that the school board had
taken her teaching license away for being repeatedly drunk
on the job.
Either way, Roberta Warner was not a person to ignore or
show your back.
Roberta turned and taking Jack by the arm, led him into the
living room.
She waved her arm and hand casually. "Sit down, Renee. What
can I get you?"
"I'm just fine, Roberta. I just ate." Naturally, I didn't
tell her that her husband was my breakfast.
"That's nice, dear. You certainly have a satisfied look
about you."
From her glances, I could tell that she did not approve of
my outfit. Like I cared.
I was kinda waiting for the big ball to drop. I really
wondered how Roberta was going to handle all of this. I
kept my eye on the front door as an emergency exit.
Jack took his wife in his arms and looked her into the
eyes. It was the most serious I had seen him look in a long
while. "Roberta, I asked Renee to come with me this
morning. I need to talk to you and I wanted her to be
here."
Roberta glanced at me, scowling. Turning back to her
husband, she looked like a deer in the headlights. "What,
Jack. What?"
Jack stumbled over the words. I held my breath. I waited
for him to drop the bomb about us, to tell her that we had
been lovers for a long time now.
Jack had tears in his eyes. "Roberta, someone has shot
Traci."
"Oh, no, Jack! Traci? Is she alive? What happened?"
Roberta's voice got shaky and her eyes filled quickly with
tears.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Well, I thought... uh, well,
never mind. Some things are better left unsaid.
As I was walking out of the room, i could tell that Jack
was comforting his wife in his best style. Soon, he was
kissing her and calming her down. As their kisses became
more urgent and passionate, they didn't even see me
standing in the doorway.
Soon Jack was undressing his wife and kissing her breasts.
I was pleased to see that even after having a child, her
shape was nice. I wondered what the drinking and smoking
